The plumbing company fixed the leaking pipe in relatively short order, then recommended Emergency Services Restoration (ESR) for dry out and another company (Immediate Response Restoration) for demolition of the water damaged areas of the house.
Richard, of ESR, arrived about 1-2 hours after the plumber had left and immediately set to work surveying the water damage visually and with a water detection meter. Richard marked damaged areas for demolition (by another company) with blue tape then set up a dehumidifier in front of the shower behind which the leaking pipe had been found. He also set up two fans and a dehumidifier in a bedroom that shared a common wall with the shower. The bedroom had suffered the most extensive water damage, with half of the carpet and pad saturated and with wet sections of drywall. He also set up two fans and a dehumidifier in the garage, beneath the area of the upstairs leak which had saturated and collapsed a portion of the garage?s drywall ceiling. All this work took place on Wednesday, May 8, late afternoon. Richard said he would return on Saturday to check on the progress of the dry out.
I expected to receive a phone call from Richard on Saturday morning, but didn?t. Finally, I called him in order to find out when he planned to come to my house. He said he was busy, and would call me back. About an hour later, Richard called to say that he was on his way and would be at my house in about 15 minutes. Upon his arrival, Richard conducted another visual inspection of the damaged areas and used his water detection meter to determine if any additional drying was needed. He removed one dehumidifier and one fan; then repositioned the remaining equipment to continue drying some areas that were still damp. He said that he would return Monday between 9 and 10 AM to remove the remaining equipment.
On Monday, May 13, I waited for Richard?s arrival. Nine o?clock came and went without his arrival or a phone call. Ten o?clock came and went without his arrival or a phone call. I understand that delays sometimes occur, and decided to give him the benefit of the doubt and wait until 11 AM. Eleven o?clock came and went without his arrival or a phone call. Finally, I called him shortly after 11 AM.
Richard said that he was busy handling an emergency job order, offered no explanation why he did not call me to tell me that he wouldn?t show, and said that he would try to find someone else to come pick up the fans and dehumidifiers. I told him that I had taken the morning off work, and had to leave my house at noon to get to the office, so whoever came would have to do so before noon.
Noon came and went without anyone?s arrival and without a phone call from Richard. I left my house and went to work. At 1:30 PM, I checked my voicemail; no message from Richard. I called him and told him that I would be at my house the next morning (Tuesday, May 14) between 9 and 10 AM, and that due to other workers? arrivals I would have to remove the fans and dehumidifiers myself if he did not show again. Richard assured me that someone would be at my house between 9 and 10. The next morning, one of Richard?s associates arrived at 9:30 and removed the remaining drying equipment from my house.
All told, ESR did excellent work in performing the dry out. They were very thorough and, on that basis, I would use them again. However, their failure to show up, and their failure to call to tell me that they were not going to show up, caused me to miss a half day of work needlessly. For someone who hangs around the house all day, that would not be an issue; but for those of us who have to work, a silent no-show is aggravating.
There is another big ?however? that I did not realize until the dry out work was completed; one which represents a failure on my part. I had assumed that, because ESR was recommended by my plumber (ARS), ESR was properly licensed to perform work in California. A perusal of the multi-page ESR invoice and incident report does not show any license number. That was ultimately my fault for not asking up front. Had I known they had no license, I would not have hired them. And now, knowing that they have no license, I would not use them again.
Regarding price, $2236 seemed high to me, especially considering that the technician was at my house for just 2-3 hours total. The rest of the time was simply having the fans and dehumidifiers run unattended. I spoke about this with my insurance adjuster, who indicated that the cost was not out of line with the standard cost for such work.
Bottom line: I cannot fault the quality of Emergency Services Restoration work. They did exactly what they were supposed to do and did it well. Price, although it seemed high to me for the actual amount of work performed, was within industry standard. Negative things included their failure to show up on the appointed day and their failure to call me to inform me that they were not going to show. The big negative thing is that they do not appear to have a license. For that reason, despite the apparent good work, I would not use them again.
A plumber called these AdamHenerys for my 89 year old in-laws due to water damage in the laundry area. When I arrived they had already signed up for the drying out of the area and Josh was in the process of telling them about how bad it was and they would be sending the construction / design people out to take over and restore it to "like new". I unfortunately let them proceed with the drying but stopped the rest telling them I would be getting the estimates for them. Josh was upset and when they ripped out the vinyl floor for the drying he told his helper to cut it back into the bathroom doorway necessitating the bathroom area vinyl be replaced also. In 3 days they returned to pick up the noisy ineffective dehumidifiers and told the old folks they should be left longer (incurring more costs) or the insurance "might not pay", they were tired of the noise and declined.
The water damage was due to air conditioner condensation and relatively minor, the vinyl particleboard underlayment was wet and had to be replaced anyway. So, even if it was dry ( which it is not) it needs to be replaced. I should have set up a fan.I would not let these guys clean up after my Dog.
