Edwin Voskanian had installed a gas water heater for us in 2000 for $250. We had bought the water heater from Sears and he did the installation. In 2005, the water heater started leaking. I called Edwin to take a look at it. He came over in a couple of days, inspected the water heater, and informed me that the water heater tank was leaking. He told me to contact Sears to find out if the water heater was still under warranty. I called Sears and they sent somebody over to take a look at the water heater. The technician told me that the tank was leaking and since the water heater still had warranty coverage, they would replace the water heater only but I would have to pay to install the new water heater. When the new water heater was delivered, the third-party plumber hired by Sears told me that it would take more than $300 to install the water heater because he would have to replace the hot/cold water flex lines and do some other additional work. I told him that I would like to get a second opinion, so he dropped off the water heater for $85 delivery fee. I called Edwin. Edwin said that he had installed brand new hot/cold water flex lines in 2000 and they still seemed to be in good shape and did not need replacing. He said that he would install the new water heater for $150 if I would help the guy that he would be sending over with the installation. Before he sent his guy over, Edwin instructed me to attach a garden hose to the water outlet on the bottom of the heater to drain the water from the heater. The water heater had drained out by the time Edwin's worker came over. I helped him take down the old water heater and put the new water heater on the metal stand. After he was done with connecting the water flex lines, gas flex line, and earthquake straps, he filled the water heater with water and ignited the burner. As he was about to take the cardboard packaging to his truck I heard this crunch sound. He had stepped on a small plastic screen lying on the floor and broke it. I asked him what the screen was for because it had obviously fallen out from the cardboard packaging. He told me - don't worry about it, it is nothing, the water heater is working fine. I flipped the pages of the owner's manual to find out what the plastic screen was for and found out that the screen goes on the bottom of the water heater and covers the air intake for the burner to keep out lint and dirt. I told him what the screen is for and he said - don't worry, pay me first, I will bring over a new one to replace it. That of course never happened. I called Sears parts, and they told me that the screen costs about $2 plus shipping. I didn't call Edwin to make a stink about a $2 part. But I have learned that if some contractor or technician tells you - don't worry, I will come back to fix it, just pay me now - you just know that the fix will never get done. Edwin gets an A for professionalism because he correctly diagnosed the problem and got the water heater installed fairly quickly. His worker gets a B.
