I was contacted by the owner, who was very fair & very professional & was concerned about my interaction with his employee. He offered to totally refund the charges in question as a gesture of goodwill. This was more than acceptable to me culminating in a marked improvement in my satisfaction with his services.
Description of Work: Called at 4 PM because sewer was totally clogged. Plumber (Gabriel) responded by 5:30 PM & stated that he would have to hydro push the fluid down the pipe & scope it to determine if the pipe was broken or clogged. He announced that the cost would be $850. Having no choice, I agreed. Afterward he stated he could not diagnose the problem due to fluid at the end of the pipe. He stated however, that if the pipe was broken , it would cost 15-20 thousand dollar to replace. I have since gotten bids from other plumbers that charge for scoping $300, & pipe replacement 6=8 thousand dollars.

Had an old water heater that broke. Called Barker and sons and got same day service. Joseph came out within 2 hours and gave me a quote on a new water heater, drained and removed the old unit while Gabriel returned a few hours later and installed the new one. Both technicians were great and really know their stuff. Especially when dealing with older homes and galvanized pipes! I would recommend both Joseph and Gabriel to anyone who needs plumbing help! They are the best!

09/14/13 The first company to come out that day came prepared to go under the house carrying his coveralls and a powerful flashlight and had an assistant come too. The crawl space for this house is located inside a bedroom closet making it a narrow fit to enter. Chris made a joke of it and said he is glad he did not eat that extra hamburger. While he was under the house looking at everything he was feeding information back to his assistant to write down so that he could give me a better estimate once he got back to the office. The second company to come out that morning was Barker and Sons. Their estimater, Gabriel, was a larger man who told me he did not have to go under the house to see anything, he could just base the estimate on number of bathrooms, etc. His size had nothing to do with it as my tenant and his two grown sons are taller and wider than the estimater and they have entered into the crawl space for other repairs. Gabriel did lie down on the bedroom floor and stick his head in the opening and with a flash light looked around from on top of the crawl space. I had told Gabriel what the other company had said needed to be done and so with that information he said he would give me the estimate right then and there. He started to write my name and information and start the estmate, but then said he would e-mail it to me that day . I was busy the next few days setting up two more estimates from Angie's List. On 09/14 I called and left a phone message around 3:30pm with Barker and Sons (a week later) to see what happened to the estimate. A man named Mike called me back around 6:30 pm and said he would check on it first thing Monday morning and get that estimate out to me via e-mail for which I gave him my e-mail address again. I never heard back from them, I just wish they would have given me the courtesy to call or e-mail me and say they did not want to do the job. I went ahead and hired the first company that came out and they are starting this coming week. The start date was only delayed because of stuff on my end, otherwise they were ready to start within a week of my approving them for the job.
Description of Work: I had e-mailed several plumbing companies on Angie's website giving them details of what the problem was and I was looking to get a free estimate to have all the drains completely re-done and a copper re-pipe of the entire 52 y.o. rental property I own.

They came out twice to do this job. Once with two plumbers for 4-5 hours and once with 1 guy for about 4 hours. It was quite a bit of work. It took a while to find a plumber that I could trust to work with our gas lines. The price was reasonable and they did a good job with everything up to code and working perfectly. I would definitely use them again and recommend them for someone looking for professional work at a reasonable price.

Very happy with the work done by Barker & Sons...They did a complete repipe, replacing the original galvanized pipes with a combo of PEX and copper pipe. The guys did a fantastic job of getting the work completed within the three-day timeframe they quoted, and it's SO great to have decent water pressure again! Thanks to everyone at Barker & Sons!

The service tech arrived on time, was professional, courteous and knowledgable. He evaluated the yellow flame on our water heater and told us we probably needed a new one. He said he could service it but due to the age of it, he could not guarantee it would fix the problem. Then he gave us an estimate for a new 40 gal water heater and it was so outrageously expensive that we almost fell over. Just a few months earlier, we replaced a 75 gal water heater (different house, different company) and his 40 gal price was slightly more than what we paid for the 75 water heater. We respectfully declined and paid the $39 service fee and ended it there.

Response from Barker and Sons Plumbing & Rooter
Dear (member name removed), Thank you for taking time to share your experience with Barker & Sons. We appreciate knowing that our trained service professional presented himself in a professional and acceptable manner. We are proud of our team and spend a lot of time and effort to ensure that they are experienced, trained and knowledgeable when they arrive at your home. To provide world class service and guarantee that we will be in business to handle your future plumbing needs, we demand that our team abides by all regulations and guidelines set by the State of California and the National Plumbing Association. We want the plumbing in your home to be safe, efficient and remain in proper working order. When a professional service technician arrives at your home, many costs have already been incurred. Specialized training, education and experience, insurance, license and bonds, background checks, drug testing, equipment, tools and vehicles, quality controls and technology all play a significant role in providing the best and highest quality of service possible to our customers and to ensure your peace of mind. We know that buying a home is usually the single largest investment most people make in their lifetime and protecting that investment is important. Hiring a licensed contractor offers many protections, especially in regards to residential property. Licensed contractors in the state of California have completed a specific number of hours of working experience, passed written tests based on their specific trade and participate in continuing education to keep their licenses current. Most unlicensed contractors or handymen are not qualified, bonded or properly insured allowing them to underbid the licensed professional. While this may be attractive initially as a way to lower costs and save money, most times it is not, putting you, the customer, at risk. Our company decided a long time ago that we would rather explain our pricing once rather than compromise our professionalism or the quality of our products and services. Sincerely, Brenda Endres

Great service-quick, job well-done, reasonable price. We had an old pipe break in our backyard and water was really shooting out everywhere. We couldn't find the main shut off and I called Barker and sons. They walked me through the process of finding the main shutoff. They dispatched a plumber immediately. While I was waiting, they called me to find out if the water situation was contained to let me know that someone was on his way. I have used them many times in the past on other properties too and have always found them to be caring, courteous, and quick. This company is a keeper!

Great. Cleaned out the clogged pipes that probably had 40 years of crud in it. Frank and Juan were courteous, explained the work they were going to do clearly, and even showed me the equipment they were going to use before I agreed to do the work. Juan went under the house crawlspace to make sure the pipes were ok while hydro blasting the pipes. Also, I like that they had those plastic shoe cover things so they don't track up the floors. 1 minute after they left, Missy at their company office called to make sure all was good - these guys are pretty on top of it. Would use them again.

Our job presented multiple challenges for the technician. Due to a kitchen remodel by the previous owner, the copper lines were not easily found. They also proved to be very difficult to re-route. Will, the technician, handled each obstacle and managed to get our lines to the proper faucets in a timely fashion. He was on time every day, and really exerted alot of effort to make our job a success.

Excellent, knowledgeable technician explained everything in detail. Here's an out-line: 1. Before doing anything, examined the existing (broken) water-heater. 2. Examined how the house was setup in relation to the existing water-heater. 3. Explained what the requirements would be to go tank-less. 4. Explained what would and would not work in my situation (the house), this included: 4a. Ventilation (exhaust) requirements. Which in my case dictated that I could not use a model with passive venting - due path the ducting would have to take in my case. That also dictated going to a model with a blower. That also meant going out the wall for exhaust instead of using the existing vertical exhaust, since the existing ducting didn't meet the requirements for withstanding the heat the new unit would generate (compared to the old tank-based water-heater). In the end, the hole in the wall is very similar (in appearance) to a dryer-duct. Fortunately, my previous unit was located in the garage in the corner of an outside wall. So, not big deal. 4b. Gas-supply requirements. Which, in my case meant running a new gas-line to the unit. The new unit required a 3/4-inch gas line, whereas the previous (tank) unit was fine with the existing 1/2-inch supply. Fortunately, in my case (again) the my gas-meter is just outside the outside wall. It's only about 10 feet way, but the line is longer than that due to having to go around the side-door of the garage. So, they ran about 15-20 feet of new gas-line using a new "T" right from the gas-meter. 4c. Electrical requirements. The old (tank) unit was pilot-light based, and had no electrical components at all. The new (tank-less) unit, although gas powered, does require electricity to run the ignitor and other electronics. It doesn't use a lot of electricity (since it doesn't use the eletricity to heat the water). Fortunately, in my case the inside wall that is the other part of that "corner" in the garage is the back wall of the kitchen. So, it was relatively easy to just add another outlet on that wall, tapped-into the existing electrical from the kitchen. That work was done by an electrician they recommend, and was minimal in costs. 5. They removed and hauled-away the old broken tank-type water-heater. 6. They installed the new gas-line, exhaust duct and water-heater, hooked everything up, tested it, etc. 7. I opted to add a (recommended) water filter that goes between the water-heater and the incoming water supply. This is done to minimize the impact/maintenance associated with hard-water causing "scaling" build-up in my new (expensive) tank-less water-heater. I was told this was not 100% necessary, but reduces recurring (annual-ish) maintenance down to mostly just inspection and change the filter. 95% of all that work was done by ONE guy! Other than the electrical (done by another person), it was all ONE guy! As with any work done on basically an emergency basis, I didn't do a ton of price-checking/comparing, etc. It might have been nice to have had access to a few more manufacturers and models. In the end (1 year later now), I am very happy with the both the upgrade itself (from tank to tank-less) and with the vendor's work. However, at the expense involved, I would recommend that anybody even thinking of going tank-less (which I definately recommend) to not wait until their existing system breaks. It's definately not a cheap upgrade (just under $3.5k in my case - in 2012) . Also for any new home buyers, do NOT assume you can just easily replace a tank model with a tank-less model later - there's way too many differences, and builders always seem to do the minimum necessary. So, if you don't have an explicit need for say a 3/4-inch gas line - they aren't building the house that way.
Description of Work: Replaced old tank-based water-heater with a tank-less water-heater, and all the complications that go along with that.

I called to request check of slow-running sewer line. Barker and Sons came out same day, diagnosed problem, and gave me options on how to proceed. Since there were no cleanouts in fron of house, and inadequate diameter ones elsewhere, I decided to have th m installed the cleanouts in front, which they did that same day working well into the evening and after dark.

Wil arrived in a timely manner, was very professional, and worked quickly. I trusted what he told me, he didn't try to up sell me. I like this company because they have a price list, so you know the repairman isn't making up the prices as he goes.
Description of Work: I thought I had a slab leak, and called Barker & Sons among two other plumbers from Angie's list to get an estimate. I found it difficult to get estimates for this type of job because they have to do some tests before giving an estimate of the job, and getting a leak detection/location test costs about $250 from most that I asked. One plumber said he didn't have the equipment to do the pressure test, and gave me a name of someone else to call first at a cost of $300 or more. Wil from Barker had to fix my main service valve in order to get a pressure reading. I live in a duplex, so I had to turn off main to both houses. My tenant needed to take a shower for work, but, Wil did part of the job quickly, so we could get the water back on for the tenant, then finished the whole job in less than an hour. He "removed and replaced 1" main service valve using new ballvalve 1" type "l copper and new 3/4 hosebib, also performed pressure test, found no loss of pressure.." They gave me a 10% senior discount, and I was very happy.
