We have a very old a/c unit (and I mean VERY OLD) for one side of our house and it had completely stopped working. I had been in denial about it for quite some time because I did *not* want to be told I would have to shell out thousands for a new unit. However, given the age of the unit, I pretty much accepted this suggestion of a new unit as inevitable. I called Jan at Fix My AC based on his other review here on Angie's List -- particularly based on the fact that the reviewer said Jan did not hard sell him anything AND had fixed a unit that other providers in the area said had to be replaced entirely. I thought that if I had any chance of avoiding a total replacement, maybe Jan could find it for me. And he did! Jan was great; returned my email promptly and got me an appointment a day later. He actually arrived earlier than he had guessed he would be here and immediately upon meeting him I felt calm about the situation. My husband and I both got the feeling, right off the bat, that Jan was going to tell us what was what with our unit and not what *he* would like to be up with our unit. After getting into the guts of it (and happily explaining to us what he was doing, every step of the way), Jan *was* able to fix our unit and get it up and running pretty much like new (at least as far as our user-end experience goes). He also discussed with us what we would be looking at spending when we *did* want to replace it, what our best options would be (with respect to size, energy efficiency, etc.), and when would be the best (i.e. cheapest for us) time of the year to do so, given manufacturer sales, etc. Jan had the parts he needed to repair our unit with him in his truck and the whole thing was done in under two hours and for just over $200. Given Jan's willingness to talk to us each step of the way through the diagnostic and repair, I feel I have a much better grasp of how the unit functions and what went wrong with it (Jan patiently explained the whole breakdown cycle that applied to our situation and then explained how it had been fixed and how and why and when it may happen again). Jan also didn't hesitate to point out all the things our old dinosaur of a unit was doing *well* -- temperature of the air, that the motors sounded good, etc. I expected a whole day of *doom* discussing all the things wrong with the unit and discussing having to replace the unit and instead I got a great experience of discussing the *realities* of our unit -- the bad AND the good. And! I have a working unit again! I couldn't have asked for a more positive outcome or more conscientious service. I highly recommend you call Fix My AC first!
