DUNHAM TREE SVC

Had Brandon quote cut down or severe cut back on 8 sweet gums to be done 2 at a time with me doing the cut up and haul off to save money. He quoted $200-$250 depending on the size of the tree. Said he'd start the week after spring break. showed up 3 weeks after. I told him which 2 were to be first because one was blocking the area of a new driveway yet to be poured and the other was diseased and needed to come down first. He cut the driveway one down, no problem. Showed up a week later while I was out. He had run home to blow out his saw so only his crew was there, so I told one of his workers that they were working on the wrong tree and pointed out which one needed to come down next (the diseased one). Came home again later and they were just finishing up the wrong tree. I wasn't happy but had planned to eventually do that tree anyway. When they were done, Brandon came to the door and said he'd made a mistake on his estimate and needed at least $800. I was stunned as I'd never had anyone try to up the price after doing the work. His father jumped in and said no, they could settle for $700. (was supposed to be $450) I pointed out that he'd cut the wrong tree and the diseased one (the whole reason I'd called him in) was still standing but worse, if he felt he'd made a mistake on the estimate, why do a second tree without telling me he was raising the price? That was just dirty pool. I offered him an additional $50.00 because he'd cut a trunk down (1 cut) that I'd originally told him to leave standing but otherwise it was his mistake, his loss. He said he needed to re-quote the remaining trees and I said that was fine but if I ever used him again everything, including his estimate had to be in writing.People I talked to said he had a good reputation and I found him to be a likable guy and even though it was the wrong tree, he did exactly what I wanted in the way of topping but I have no intention of hiring someone I can't trust to keep his word. Plus, I still have the diseased tree that started this whole thing.
