The two man crew, Tim and Jeff, were the best home improvement people I've dealt with in many years. Very efficient and very tidy. High quality work. Always willing to listen to my questions on this or that. Estimator Jason was also very helpful in working out the plan, which required some thought.

We called Harker Heating & Cooling and arranged for Steve to stop by a couple days later to prepare an estimate for a new heating and probably a new cooling system. Steve arrived as promised and I walked around with him as he inspected our 21 year old equipment and pointed out a number of significant items. I had a number of specific questions and Steve was a fountain of information since he has been doing this type of work for a long time. All my questions were clearly answered by Steve so I was comfortable that I knew what would be involved in the replacement of both the heating and cooling systems. Steve priced out three different options for us, any one of which would have been appropriate. He again answered our questions on the differences in the equipment so we could make a good decision. We said that we would make a decision and let him know. The next day we called Steve, told him the option we picked, and asked him to schedule the installation. We agreed on 9-9-2014 for the installation of the new equipment and Steve told us to expect Bill & Jeff to be at our door about 7:30 am to remove the old and install the new. That is just what happened. When Bill & Jeff showed up, we talked about what was going to be done including removing the old humidifier & patching the corresponding sheet metal, changing the outdoor exhaust pipe and replacing the outdoor AC electrical box (did not meet new code). Bill went to work on the furnace and Jeff went to work on the AC. Along the way they showed us what they were going to install and answered a few more questions that we had. They were great. Everything they installed looks good...not unlevel, not loose ends, not uneven or ragged edges. When done, they removed all the old pieces, they went over the operation of the equipment and presented us with the instruction manuals. We were completely happy with their work and their interactions with us. With our WI weather, both our new Carrier AC and new Carrier furnace have both run a little and both seem to be working fine....no problems with any of the newly installed. The furnace in particular is much quieter than our old furnace. A few days after the installation, we got an envelop in the mail from Harker H&C with the Focus on Energy rebate form filled-out for us to sign and instructions for mailing it. Very efficient. Based on our experience, we highly recommend Harker Heating & Cooling for replacing furnace, air filtering and AC units. We will also plan to use them for our future equipment servicing needs as well.
Description of Work: Replaced furnace, replaced air conditioner, replaced thermostat, up-graded air filter system, uninstalled old furnace humidifier + patched sheet metal, replaced outdoor electrical AC box and drafted WI Focus on Energy rebate form.

Our finished walkout Basement was always significantly colder than the rest of the house and the furnace struggled to heat the house during the extremely cold winter we had last year. The furnace was the original builder grade model. The home is 16 years old. Harker came out and at first suggested we try adjusting the duct openings to see if we could get more even temperature throughout the house. When that did not work Harker came back and recommended we install a second return and two speed fan to circulate the air better and a furnace that was the right size for our home. The install team was prompt, professional and knowledgeable. The install went very quick. The temperature in the house is much more balanced and the circulation is much improved. The furnace is a lot quieter.
Description of Work: Replaced the original furnace and added a second return.

Initially things went well. A/C was not working so we called Harker. Nice guy came out to check what we had and convinced us to replace furnace as well as the A/C. Installation was prompt and went well. So far, so good. Three weeks later, on a hot Sunday, the A/C stopped working. I called and was told there was nothing they could do on the weekend, but they'd come right away on Monday. After we had a hot, sleepless night, someone did come on Monday and "fixed" the A/C. He left no paperwork or info about what he did, but the A/C worked so we didn't care. The next Sunday, hot and more humid that the last, the A/C again stopped working. I called and the on-call guy (Jordan?) came out even though it was Sunday, since we had already gone through a "repair" that didn't last. He found the unit couldn't be repaired and would have to be replaced. So again, no A/C. But he said we would be on the priority list on Monday to get the unit replaced. On Monday we got a call from Harker saying they needed to order the part and it would take 7-10 days! They said they cannot replace the unit from inventory since Carrier will not cover that under warranty. The replacement had to be ordered from the factory, and the factory would not ship for about 5 days. And neither Carrier nor Harker was willing to pay for fast shipping. So another week or more without A/C. But that's not Carrier's problem and it's not Harker's problem, it's OUR problem. The measure of quality and service is best shown when something goes wrong, and both Harker and Carrier come up very short on both quality and service. Update---after I posted the very negative review above, the very next day I got a call from Harker saying they would install a new replacement unit the next day. And they did. And it's been working well since. So everything is good now. Thank you Angies List. Nothing else was working, but a negative review here got their attention. Too bad my original concerns were not addressed until I resorted to a public negative review.

Higher than average energy bills in spring caused me to contact my gas and electric company. As they looked back over previous years of energy use, they noted that my house was using about 25% more electric than my neighbors. They noted my furnace was old (over 25 yrs.) and the cause of my high electric bills. They mentioned that I may qualify for a Focus on Energy Rewards program -- which I checked into and yes, I did qualify. I called Harker Heating and a couple of other companies for estimates. All were about the same price to install a new furnace. I talked with Grant at Harker, who was able to look up records from doing service on my old furnace and give me an exact run down on what to expect. I mentioned to Grant that a few years earlier, my daughter had been caught chucking small rocks into the furnace vent; would they be able to check this out. Yes! No extra charge. He set up the schedule for June 18th, 7:30 a.m. Steve and another man (forgot his name) arrived not only promptly, but a little early. The greeted me warmly, looked over the situation and went straight to work. After installation, they tested both heating and cooling of the unit, and the 2nd zone (in which we discovered dead batteries and spare ones were promptly installed). They located the rocks in one of the vents and removed them from the pipe. They proceeded to clean up the work area and provided me with all the paperwork that came with my new furnace. I thanked them and off they went to their next job. This was an excellent experience! Harker's team are very professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. If only all customer service experiences went so flawlessly! I happily recommend Harker!

Over the winter, the soffit vent cover for my bathroom fan had fallen off and birds had built a nest in the ductwork. I called Harker to put the cover back on and remove the nest. When making the appointment, I asked if access to the inside of my house would be needed. They said no, it wouldn't. It turns out they did need access and had to make another trip to do so. Despite me offering access the first time, I was charged for both trips, totaling four hours of work. While I can understand not knowing if access would be needed, why not play it safe and ensure you can get it? Especially if the customer is offering. It's a bit awkward to be charged for a full second trip when the opportunity was there on the first trip. Making things worse, the invoice came to $432 and nothing was itemized so it was unclear what I was even being charged for. I had to call for details As far as quality goes, the cover is back on the house, so that's good. A few straws from the nest blew back into the vent fan, so things weren't thoroughly done. The cover itself is the same one as before, and it's dirty. They didn't bother to wipe it off quick before putting it up. So now I have a clean one next to a dirty one. Next time I'll just invest in a tall ladder to do this myself rather than calling Harker.

[member name removed], You are absolutely right that the price was too high. This was an unusual project as birds do not normally nest that far in. We were working with you to lower the price and you hung-up on us for no apparent reason. When we called back and left a message we never got a reply. Now we get this report. I am not sure what was going on when you had to hang up on us, but if you had the time to write this report I feel you could have given us a call and had your invoice reduced. I fail to see how anyone is benefiting from this. If any Angie’s List members have a question about this report or the reply please give me a call. The provider was very prompt and professional, but gave me a very different estimate than other HVAC providers. They recommended the option of placing the system in my attic, even though other vendors did not recommend this because I don't have a real attic; only a crawl space. Estimate was also much higher than others. I chose not to use the provider.

I was having a new thermostat put in by my handyman. After it was installed, the furnace didn?t work anymore and my handyman suggested I get an electrician to look at it. The electrician came out, said the thermostat is okay, but the problem may with the furnace and he recommended Harker to me. I dealt closely Steve Heiar, the HVAC tech adviser. Everything was perfect as far as their performance. They did the job immediately and for a decent price. They are people who inspired confidence. They determined that the enhancer had gone bad. They explained that furnaces typically last between 16 and 20 years with the average being 18 years. My unit was 18 years old and I decided to have them install a new furnace. They were very quick, professional, and clean with the work. All of the men who I dealt with through the company were great! They even submitted the energy rebate form for me through the program ?Focus on Energy? and I received a $250 rebate. I am very pleased with the experience.

Due to cost we did not move forward with Harker. We got an estimate for installing duct work and air conditioning in our old two-story farmhouse. The 17,000 bid was too much but we were impressed with Jason Phillips and his professionalism and attention to detail. I would not hesitate to use this company and rated them a B due to the high price.

The installation of a new central AC unit and gas furnace went well, however, there were a few discrepancies in what the sales person told me and the end result. For example, I was told the furnace would be installed raised a few inches off of the basement floor, and it was not. The installation took place in summer, and the furnace was not used until late fall. When fall came around and the furnace didn't work, I had to call Harker back for service several times. At least two major parts were replaced on the brand new unit. I had to negotiate a longer warranty period (they initially scoffed at this, but I was persistent) because I didn't trust that the furnace would last. The AC unit also had issues within the first three years. While Harker did their best to fix the problems after they arose, they didn't really seem to care about me as a customer. After they were paid, they pretty much just forgot about me.

Dear member, Thank you for your valuable feedback. Information like this helps us continually improve our service to our customers. I guess I am confused about a few things in your comments: It was mentioned the furnace was not raised off the floor. Placing cork pads or shims under the furnace is common practice in every furnace we install and I have never heard of one of our installers forgetting to do this. In fact, I am not sure how they would be able to line up the duct work without them as the measurements would be off. I have no record of this being brought to our attention 6 years ago, so we would have no way of knowing you were unhappy with it. I see that on initial start-up the furnace did not work. We made two visits and replaced two parts that were faulty due to manufacturer defects. It is pretty rare that a Trane furnace does not start up initially, however, like everything mechanical, there is a chance it will happen. That is exactly why Trane gives out a free 5-year warranty on their equipment. I apologize for the initial hassle of having to schedule an appointment, but Harker & Trane did exactly what they were supposed to. It was said you had to negotiate a longer warranty period and we “Initially scoffed at first”. You have to understand that bumping a 5-year up to 10-year warranty because of an issue on start-up, free of charge, is more than a generous offer and cannot be given except for special circumstances. This is probably the only time in company history it was done. Lastly, and most confusing of all, you say that we did our best to fix the problems; however, we did not care about you as a customer and “forgot about you”. I guess I am missing the context of this statement. Was there more you wanted from us that we refused? I have no record of any special requests and you did not mention any in your comments. As I type this, your equipment is still under the warranty we provided and every fall and spring you get a reminder from us to have a tune-up. If there is something special that we are missing, please let me know ASAP. I apologize for the general tone of this reply. I understand that a “C” is average and maybe many other contractors would be happy with it. Here at Harker we treat everything that is not an “A” as an “F” and the comments seemed to come off as fully negative. Thank you again for choosing Harker and please give me a call so that we can discuss and needs you may have. If any Angie’s List members have a question about this report or reply, feel free to give me a call. Luke 255-6902

I think that they are professional. I think the people who came out here did a good job and explain on what they are doing. I think they're fair in terms of their rates. Every time they come out they've been on time. If I have any criticism is that they don't get back to you on time. The office seemed to be a little jumbled, sometimes you have to call a couple of times and asked if the paper work was done.

Beside all the work performed, the technician told me that CO was coming out into the exterior. He said that company policy recommends that I get the furnace replaced. "Where is the CO expected to go?" I asked. CO is not inside the house (he agreed) and I have a CO detector. Because he could not answer my question about where the CO belonged, I ignored his advice. During a visit in 2014 from a different company, the technician told me that if there was a problem with the CO, a fix might be in order, but not furnace replacement. He saw no problem with my furnace.

[removed member's name], Thank you for your feedback. Reviews like this are what help us to continually improve our service to our customers. It is unfortunate that it took 2 years to get it. Regardless, we strive to make sure every customer gets the service they expect and deserve. After reading your review, I am guessing this less-than-perfect rating is due to the fact that the technician recommended replacing the furnace while the second technician said it was possible to fix. There are many factors that come into play when making the decision to repair or replace, such as the age of the equipment and the cost of the repair. Recommending a replacement is simply the best long-term plan, but not the only option. Unfortunately because this call was 2 years ago, we do not have the details from the conversation, but I assure you our technician had the ability to fix the problem and that he never implied that replacement was the only option. I apologize if the technician was not clear when explaining the issue. We make it a point to train our technicians to explain all of the options to the homeowner when a repair or replace issue comes up. Maybe this was a rare mistake on his part. We will make sure to keep a closer eye on the issue and thank you again for the feed-back. On a side note to you and all Angie’s List members: CO is nothing to mess around with. It might not make the headlines like a natural gas explosion, but it is a bigger and more silent killer. Having a CO detector is a good start, but like a smoke detector, it can only alert you in the proper conditions, it cannot protect you. Also, furnaces are equipped with safety sensors that will shut the furnace down if the levels get too high. This will not happen in the middle of summer, it will happen when you need the heat the most. In conclusion, if any trained professional tells you there is an issue with the CO levels, get it fixed or replaced ASAP. I would not recommend ignoring the issue. Thank you again for your feed-back and we hope to earn your business back in the future. If any Angie’s List members have any questions about this incident, please give me a call or send an e-mail. The furnace wasn't working so I called Harker simply based on an internet search. They came out, looked at the problem, made the repair and were out of there in about a half hour. When I got the bill for over $300, I figured that must have been an expensive little part since their labor couldn't have been much on such a quick repair. I quickly found the part online and it cost under $30. So I called Harker to complain about getting ripped off and they would not give me any answer except that they "have to mark up their parts prices to cover the stocking fees and the warranty." I had another furnace issue about two months later and this time I called around a little and found that some repair companies will pass along the parts expense at their cost and just bill you for their labor. I definitely recommend finding a company that offers that type of service. If I had known about the other company initially, my igniter repair would have cost less than half of what Harker charged. I mentioned this experience to my brother and he said that Harker used to service all their HVAC equipment at work, but they discovered that Harker was signing off on the seasonal checklist and billing them full price without actually going through all the necessary inspections on the checklist. He said they were terrible to work with when he called to request a refund for their fraud. My recommendation is to avoid Harker.

(Removed members name), Thank you for your feedback. Reviews like this are what help us to continually improve our service to our customers. It is unfortunate that it took 2 years to get it. Regardless, we strive to make sure every customer gets the service they expect and deserve. It looks like your primary concern is the price for the service call and part. The total price was $320. This included $108 for a diagnostics charge, which includes drive time, expertise, and time to figure out what is wrong and $212 to install the part. These prices are fair and common across respectable companies in Dane county. If you would like to order a part online and simply pay for the labor to install it there would be a cash savings for you, however, we would not be able to warranty any of the work done. We also install high quality parts that cost more than the $30 one you found online, as we have to stand behind them for the long-run. We treat our customers fair. No local business can stay afloat for 65+ years by doing anything different. There will always be other companies with lower prices than us (they come and go every year). If the price paid is the ONLY factor in your decision making it would be wise to go elsewhere. Harker customers know the value in having a trustworthy, reliable, knowledgeable company that stands behind its work day & night. They know that going to the “Cheap guys” only costs you more in the long run. As for the 2nd unrelated issue, we are currently working with your brother on this and have meeting set for 3/26 to figure out the details. It makes me curious if this negative post, two years after the fact, is in some way retaliation for something. I am confident the Angie’s List community is competent enough to see our very strong track record and write this off as mis-directed anger.

Harker wasn't the least expensive but they were the easiest to work with for our project and they provided a solid set of three options for replacement when our two A/C units were stolen this past summer. A sub-contractor of theirs caused a slight delay but they were able to "light a fire" under them and all work was performed within a couple of days and with the utmost care. They were clean and thorough and even came back a week after installation to check on everything.

They seem knowledgeable and when they do, I have not had any nature problems but whatever they say has spent right, whatever they fixed, they fix it and have not been a problem. I think it was about a hundred dollars for the annual inspection. They all reserve, you can usually get an appointment soon, very accommodating, and always come right on you. You do not stay around too long, that is the other good thing.
Description of Work: I do use Harker Heating & Cooling for heating & air conditioning service.

A Harker workman came promptly, checked the fluid in the AC, found it was low, and replenished it. BUT he didn't get to the root of the problem at all. In fact, it didn't seem to cross his mind to investigate further. Upshot -- I called another company, which determined that the cause of the non-cooling AC was that there was a leak, which needed a lengthy repair
Description of Work: Checked to see why my rooftop AC wasn't cooling.

Very well. They reused an existing whole home air filtering system and beat the price of competitors. Installation was done in one day with no disruption to my house or dogs and cats.

The guys couldn't have been nicer or more punctual. My experience with Harker was great from the initial service call to the sales call and finally installation. We will definitely be calling them for maintenance in the coming years. They cleaned up every last bit of dust created from the removal and installation. Days later, we received rebate forms ALREADY FILLED OUT for us to complete and send in. NICE touch, Harker. All around, we are very pleased with this company and would highly recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: Removed and installed new air conditioner, furnace, filtration, humidifier and thermostat.
