We tend to try and have the heating inspection and the air conditioning every year. We don't always quite accomplish that and we've had other people do it but I thought their prices were fair. They were prompt in getting here and answered whatever questions I had. It took them about 2 hours to do the work.
Description of Work: Harker Heating & Cooling did an inspection and cleaning of the heating. We have hot water based on heat and so they inspected the system.

They showed up promptly, they answered any questions I had, they contacted me to schedule the appointment about 6 weeks before by postcard and offered a possible date for the inspection. I wanted them to show up on time, answer my questions, get the work done, and not leave a mess behind, and that was what they did.
Description of Work: Harker Heating & Cooling came out for the air conditioner. They cleaned the coils and inspected everything, made sure it was ready to go for the air conditioning season.

I thought they were great about coming out and taking care of things, the reason I gave them a B instead of an A is I thought three hundred dollars was an awful lot. Lower their price.

Excellent! They were able to squeeze us in really quickly, which I appreciate even more because I'm pregnant. They were able to come on a Saturday, did a great job, and were super clean and polite. They were very clear on instructions and explained everything. Super thrilled!

They had to come out and do the job again because it failed. They did give me a credit back of $186. I feel there should have been no second charge for the second service call. They are professional.

This company left the furnace running hotter than it should have been resulting in the second issue. Had it been our service technician who tuned-up your furnace and left it with the improper settings, there is no question we would have done the 2nd serve call at no charge. The price was a little high, but they were also willing to come out on a holiday weekend. They provided an accurate estimate over the phone, so there were no surprises. Ordinarily, he said the same service would have been half that amount. The technician was on time, and I am very happy to have my A/C working again. They did some work on my old house, and they've always been great to work with. I wouldn't hesitate to call them again.
Description of Work: Our A/C unit wasn't working. It turned out to be the capacitors, but the pressure in the system was also too high.

It went very well. He arrived on time, kept my floor clean, did a great job. You can get a discount by joining their Gold Star Program, in which they charge a lower price if they service your air conditioner in the Springtime and furnace in the Fall.

The service provided was good. Everything is working fine so far. The only complain I have is the AC system is probably a bit to large for our house and thus we probably spend extra money that we did not need to spend.

Although many hours late for the appointment, he did call ahead to let us know he was working on a larger job. He had to order the fan assembly from a warehouse and pick it up. All the delays pushed the repair out to late the next day. Quality of work was fine. Good professionalism. Price was high for service call. Price on cost of replacement part was high but no complaints on that item.

Our records show that we were out there on 8/27/2013, not 6/15/14, to replace an AC fan motor for $537, which is competitive. Also, we were able to make the repair same day. Are you sure you are not thinking about another company? I know I shouldn’t be complaining about a “B” overall rating, but we take anything less than an “A” as sub-par. We had our water heater go out last week. We noticed it when we woke up to take showers before work. I called a few places and ultimately chose to go with Harker because the receptionist told me they would be able to come out and assess the heater and replace it the same day. Our water heater is about 7 years old, so we figured there would be a good chance that it would cost the same amount the replace the water heater as to just fix the older one, so that is why I verified with her that they could fix it the same day. We have a new rescue dog that is not good around men, so my SO came home from work (I had already taken the day off work for this) and she took the dog away from the house so we didn?t disturb the men while they worked. As we expected, there were a few parts that were bad on the water heater and the cost would be similar to repair or to replace. He was done looking at the water around 2:00 and he told me someone would call me for a quote. I was confused as I was under the impression that they would replace it that same day per the lady on the phone. Apparently, that was not the case. This guy wasn?t even the guy who would replace the unit, the guy who would replace the unit was busy and they didn?t have a replacement unit. I was very frustrated and mad?I chose Harker because I was told they could do it all in one day or we both wouldn?t have taken off work. I could have just let my dog outside for a little while for him to look at the water heater. I paid roughly $120 for this diagnostic test. We then called to speak with a manager at Harker. They tried to get someone to come back out that night and replace the water heater but were unable to. They did have someone sent out first thing the next morning and took about $50 off the service call, which was appreciated but didn?t cover the amount of money we lost at work for missing part of both days. This all could have been avoided by having their receptionist give accurate information. There are a ton of places in Madison I could have called to have my water heater replaced and I chose Harker because I was told they could do it that same day and if they couldn't have replaced it that day, they should have said so and I would have made other arrangements. Update to Harkers repsonse: At no time did they ever offer to have the heater replaced that evening for overtime rate or we would have easily paid it instead of taking more time off work. We were told that they could try to get someone out that night but were unable to. The only reason we okay'd them to come back the next morning is we needed it replaced as soon as possible. We did not call later in the day-- it was still in the morning when we called. And, obviously we know that you cannot carry all kinds of equipment around with you, but I was told that it would be replaced that night, so that is the fault of your receptionist to give me misinformation. They will try to write this so they sound like this was our fault for not knowing that they don't carry all the equipment, need licensed plumbers, etc., but we know exactly what was told to us on the phone and exactly how the situationw as handled and it was handled poorly. We stand by our original reivew and will choose to use another company in the future.

According to our records, we did offer to replace the water heater that night; however, it would be at the overtime rate as your call was later in the day. We got confirmation from you that it was OK to come out and replace it the very next morning, which we did. There are 2 reasons the replacement cannot be done right away during the service call: 1. Per State of WI code, a water heater replacement must be done by a licensed plumber. Our technicians are fully qualified to diagnose and fix water heaters, but according to the law, they cannot replace them. We have our plumbers take care of that part. 2. It is simply not feasible to carry around a collection of water heaters in each van. They are too big and come in a variety of sizes/models. Again, I apologize for the miscommunication in the beginning, but I believe we did what we could to stand by our offer. One of our rental properties called that the Furnace was not running. We could not reach our regular Heating Co and chose Harker because they had been in business for some time. We reached their answering service who sent out a technician who was able to assess the problem, replace the transformer and was able to get it started. The problem started when the technician called for our credit card for billing to the tune of $680. This was A Sunday and we werent sure what parts were needed or how long he had worked on it. The next day we called Harker's and asked for an email of the bill which was sent. The transformer that was exchanged was a $25 to $40 part that we were charged $249 for, we also were charged for looking at the furnace at $179 in addition to 2 1/4 hour labor at Weekend rate. We realize that Sunday rate would be more than weekly, but the other overblown charges are really unjustified. This was done to a furnace that was only a year old and. Should be still under warranty. We also called Harkers again to explain how they could charge $249 for a $25 part, the lady that answered was very rude, she did say that the tech had added it wrong and it should be a little less. We feel this is taking advantage of the situation. We don't look for the least expensive companies but at least reasonable.

I obtained bids from 4 companies for a replacement furnace. My current furnace was "running dirty" and could not be repaired. I planned on getting a 2-stage furnace, but Harker's salesman suggested that because my home is under 1,000 square feet and too small for the 2-stage to be cost effective, the one-stage furnace would be suitable. The 2-stage was about $1,000 more expensive. He won my respect. The process was very smooth. The salesman came on a Wednesday and provided an estimate with 3 options. Thursday I accepted the option that was best for me. While Harker's estimate was not the lowest of the 4 bids, I felt most the confident in their expertise and service. They could install the new furnace on Friday but the day didn't work for me, so Monday morning the installer, Steve, arrived and set to work. One wrinkle that didn't cause me any inconvenience was that Steve was expecting another employee to help him but for some reason couldn't be there. My system is small and not complex and Steve was unconcerned about performing the work on his own, it would just take a little longer (installation is included in the price of the furnace). Steve was professional, easy to talk to, and helpful in answering my questions. He left the furnace area of my basement cleaner than before. In the week following, a City of Madison Building Inspector performed the required furnace installation check. He was well satisfied with Steve's work. I am so pleased to have a high quality, efficient and safe heating system along with a company I feel I can rely on for future service needs. Harker's office (608) 255-6902.

Harker replaced our 30-year-old furnace and 20-year-old air conditioner. Excellent experience all around. We obtained estimates from four local HVAC contractors, and Harker not only put in the most competitive bid (i.e., least expensive), they were also the most motivated to earn our business. We first worked with Grant, who assessed our needs and wrote the estimate. We appreciated that he did not simply try to sell us on the latest and greatest product; he actually listened to what our needs were and wrote the bid accordingly. He followed up after a couple of days to see if we had any concerns and ask if there was anything else he could offer to earn our business. None of the other contractors did that. On the day of the installation, the crew arrived on time, performed a quick assessment to make sure there wouldn't be any surprises (there weren't), and got to work. In addition to installing the furnace and A/C units, they installed new venting for the furnace and a new chimney liner for our water heater. They worked efficiently and kept our house clean. They were also friendly and courteous. Everything went smoothly. Nearly a couple of months have passed since the installation, and we've had no issues. Obviously, we haven't been able to use the A/C yet, but we're confident that all will be well when the time comes. All in all, we were very happy we went with Harker and would recommend them to anyone.

They came when we called to get an estimate. They came out and gave us the estimate and we had asked about whole house humidification and dehumidification. It would have been really easy for them to say that you need both of those, because it would have added on to the cost. But they stated that it wasn't really necessary. Didn't try to oversell and undersell. Very straight up. Set up a time within a week later they were able to come. I was not home when they did the work. But I think it was under a whole day, they took everything that needed to be taken away. Very neatly done. They seemed to know what they are doing. They got to work got the work done then were on their way.

Our furnace exhaust smelled bad so we called a place for someone to check it out. The verdict was a bad heat exchanger and given the age of the furnace, a replacement was more economical. I got three quotes from area companies and Harker's was the best. The tech advisor, Steve, who gave us the quote was excellent. He gave us a couple options for equipment and was really great to talk to. He wasn't a typical sales guy, he was really down to earth and friendly with no B.S. He recommended that we replace the air conditioner as well because of its age and based on the fact we are planning on selling the house in the next couple years. He thought a home inspector might call it out on a report, too. His advice was grounded in helpfulness and reality. We accepted the quote and scheduled the install for almost the next day - I was very surprised at how quickly we got on the schedule. Steve said the installers would arrive at 7:30 AM and be done by 3:30 PM and he was right. They arrived right on time, and actually got done at 2 PM. The install day was a breeze. The two installers were very friendly and got down to work right away. The old units were removed and the new ones were installed. They removed an old Aprilaire unit and reconfigured the duct to cover the area. They redid a duct that had become disconnected as well. Super nice, very thorough in their work. The new Carrier furnace and AC look great and the furnace runs great!

Scheduled appointment for an Aprilaire insallation a week in advance. Day of service no one showed during the 8a-10a window. When i called the office i was told the appointment was changed, they were unsure why. I was very clear when scheduing the appointment that it had to be scheduled by Tuesday. I was even put on hold while she re-checked their schedule. They were completely un-apologetic and did not seem to care about the inconvenience to the customer. They never apologized...only asked to re-schedule. When i told them i did not want to re-schedule and that this was inconvenient because i had taken off work, her response was ok and a hang up. Given the original scheduling conversation and the lack of any remorse at the no call no show appointment, I feel like this is a standard practice. There was zero concern for the situation. Very disappointing. They have lost my business for good. Furnace is probably a 3-5 years from repacing--they have lost that as well.

We deeply apologize for the mishap on our end of scheduling the date of [member name removed]’s Humidifier. It was clearly supposed to be scheduled for the time and day that the homeowner was expecting. When the install was entered into our computer system it was keyed in for November 26 instead of the 25th by mistake. Our Service Coordinator said she had apologized and also the other service coordinator that has her desk in the same office said she had apologized. When she asked if we could set up another time she said [member name removed] responded by saying no and he was going to call another company and hung up on her. At that time our salesmen Grant called [member name removed] and got there voicemail and left a message of apology and told them for the inconvenience we would reduce the price for their troubles and to give him a call back. We did not get a response back. We don't make mistakes often, but when we do, we always make right. It seems the homeowner did not want to grant us this opportunity and that is their decision. We are truly sorry for the typo in entering their install date and have reviewed this in our office so we can avoid this from happening again.
