I was very impressed with Paul and his son. They went above and beyond to make sure that the work was completed on time to get a second radon test before the date of the closing on my home. Paul is very knowledgeable and very personable. I enjoyed talking to him and learning more about radon, it's source and how to deal with it. His price was fair based on other quotes and reviews I had looked at. He kept in touch, was on time and completed the work quickly. It was kind of a crazy day with a lot of people going in and out of the house and he was very accommodating and understanding. I've never had a contracted professional come out on a Sunday in order to make sure the work was done on time - and the result of their work was a 0.4 on the radon test - this is EXCELLENT! I would highly recommend RMES.

Paul and his son were absolutely great to work with! They were very professional and knowledgable from start to finish. We had a lot of questions and they were very patient with walking us through the entire process. The installation went well and we couldn't be happier with the results. We've been recommending them to all of our family and friends due to such a great experience :)

Things went well. This is the second time we have used RMES, once for our own home and once for another home. This family run business is relaxed and easy to deal with. They go the extra mile to make sure you are happy. They were even patient and friendly with my small kids.
Description of Work: RMES fixed an improperly installed radon system. Re-routed output line to above roof level. Put clear cover on sump pump well with access port. Made output out of downspout to match existing downspouts on house.

The work was done to their estimated time and price. We hardly knew that they were here working in our basement. Both Chase and Paul were very knowledgeable about their work and explained in layman's terms how the system worked and the benefits of this system.
Description of Work: Addressing the high levels of Radon in basement. Father and son were great. They installed a new sump pump as well as the mitigation system in the basement as well as attached an outside pipe which would take all the radon out of the house. They used colors and materials on the outside of the house which blends in well and does not look out of place. They estimated that the work would take them around three hours to complete and this is roughly how long it took.

Setting up, pricing, scheduling all went smooth. They are very busy so they do refer you to their web site to get common asked questions answered. I also feel like they really want you to understand what you're buying. Install day: They showed up on-time. Father/son team. We walked through the project, I had an opportunity to ask any questions. Installation was smooth. It took about 6 hours. They seem to be very nice guys and after knowing them I would be comfortable with them being in the house with my Wife and 3 kids (all under 5) alone. I would recommend them to anyone needing a radon removal system.
Description of Work: Sealed sump-pump croc. Sealed visible cracks on basement floor. Installed pipe/fan from drain tile in basement, to the outdoors, up the side of the house to vent out radon.

After having a radon test done we found that our levels were at 7.7pCi/L and 8.0pCi/L on the 2 tests whereas the EPA (which cites ASTM E2121-09 Standard "Practice for Radon Mitigation Systems in Existing Low-Rise Residential Buildings" as the definitive standard on radon mitigation) lists a national action guideline of 4.0pCi/L. Considering our basement is finished and used regularly and we have 3 small children we wanted to address this right away. Through Angie's List we found Radon Measurement & Elimination Services. It is a father and son team run by Paul Nicholson and his son Chase. Chase came out to perform the estimate and explain what would be accomplished. Chase was very professional, courteous, and most important, on-time. We agreed on the work and had it scheduled for the following week (which is today, they literally just left). Paul and Chase arrived right on time with Chase tackling the outside portion of job and his father Paul performing the inside work. Having Paul and Chase in my home was like having a member of my family due the job. Both were very professional, courteous, and once again on-time. The job was done with quality and they took the time to explain everything to me in detail, including how they stand by their workmanship and parts through their warranty program (which is not something you pay extra for). All in all the job took about 3 hours for my 2 story home and I am extremely pleased with the results. I also have peace of mind knowing that they stand by their work and guarantee that I will see vast improvements in my radon levels in a short period of time. I would recommend Paul and Chase to anyone needing this service. Simply put, they are stand up guys who you can trust to do a great job.
Description of Work: RMES installed a radon evacuation system in my basement. The job entailed installing the necessary piping (small amount of PVC, as well as aluminum duct), fan, and electrical connections including an on/off breaker switch mounted on the exterior of the home by the fan itself in the event that the fan would need to be serviced. This allows RMES to be able to swap out a fan (if needed) without having to gain access into the home.

Chase came out to give me a quote on a radon system and was very thorough and very informative. He explained exactly what was going to be done, how it was going to be installed, and the materials and equipment they were going to use. I received quotes from other installers, none of which took the time to come out to inspect the property and explain what needed to be done. Also, RMES was the most affordable price. Chase and his father Paul came out and installed the system. The workmanship was outstanding from making sure everything was pitched properly to the aesthetics of the exterior venting. Overall, extremely pleased with the work they did. I highly recommend RMES.

Chase Nicholson provided our estimate and was very professional and helpful. The price quoted for a sub-slab depressurization unit was very competitive. We chose not to work with RMES after doing further research. They proposed using aluminum downspout material for the outdoor venting. They were the only company we checked with that proposed using this, others were using PVC pipe.On further online research, found that the aluminum downspouts were not the best and some states had chosen not to allow providers to use the aluminum.Wisconsin state site did not note anything about the venting material at that time, but we decided to go with a company that used PVC pipe.
Description of Work: We did not contract with this company.

Response from Radon Measurement & Elimination Services
As a board member of the MW-AARST, it’s my responsibility to know and implement EPA, AARST, NRPP, NEHA, ASTM protocols within our work on a daily basis. The EPA’s protocols (Federal guidelines), written in the mid 1980’s and “tweeked” in the early 1990’s, have never changed relative to system exhausts, and allow for either 3”X4” (minimum) metal downspout, or 3” (minimum) schedule 40 PVC pipe to be used. Those protocols are mimicked by the new ASTM E2121 guidelines… which will be adopted by the EPA later this year as it’s guidelines. Only the State of Ohio doesn’t allow downspout to be used since 2008. Not knowing why, I went back to the head of their State radon program to ask. They sent a one page flyer back to me with 6 pictures on it, along with the comment “it’s self-explanatory”. The 6 pictures showed radon systems using 2” X 3” plastic downspout, installed upside-down, and using exhaust caps… none of which has ever met Federal protocols. Ohio also decided at the same time to “re-write” their State guidelines to include use of Schedule 20 (1/8”) PVC piping for radon system installations , something not allowed by Federal guidelines… or any other organization. The problem is, if you’re an EPA/NEHA certified installer in Ohio, and are asked to install a system to EPA protocols, you can’t use Schedule 20 PVC piping. Ohio protocols… you can. I’m not sure what a mitigator does there as the protocols don’t “mesh”. My vote… use Federal guidelines! Schedule 20 PVC doesn’t glue up properly, is weak, has a tendency to crack, and doesn’t hold up well to outdoor UV light. Although I see it weekly in systems installed here in WI, it has to be “flagged” by home inspectors as non-compliant, and corrected using Schedule 40 PVC… EPA (Federal) protocol. The aluminum (metal) downspout that we use for our outdoor system exhausts are color-coordinated to each house we mitigate. The downspout material is more expensive than PVC pipe, and takes longer to install properly than PVC pipe. We’re not using it to put more money in our pocket, we’re using it to give our clients the best system possible at competitive pricing. A client can choose a system like ours, or a system our competitors choose to install. Or, even worse. One is cosmetically matched and installed to look like a part of a person’s home, the other looks like something foreign, hung onto a house making it look industrial. One will help to sell a house, the other will deter buyers. Unfortunately, that only deals with the cosmetics of the subject. The goal in any radon mitigation is to provide air-flow… as much as possible. That insures extremely low radon rates, and as much humidity relief to the basement as possible. As most radon fans have a 4” throat size (12.5 sq. inches), it’s imperative to keep as close to that size of exhaust piping as possible. When you use 3” X 4” downspout as we do, your exhaust throat size is 12 sq. inches, providing 96% of the fans potential. To get this performance in PVC piping, you’d need to run 4” Schedule 40 piping as an exhaust. But most mitigators don’t run 4”, they run 3” pipe above the fan, which is 7.1 sq. inches. This cuts the system’s potential by 42%. This “choking down” doesn’t permit proper air-flow, which makes the fan run faster, which makes it use more electricity. Because it’s running faster with less air-flow, the bearings heat up more than they were designed to, which shortens fan life. So, the two rational choices for a radon system exhaust is 4” Schedule 40 piping which we use on our factory installations… , or 3”X4” (minimum) metal downspout… which meets all current guidelines except in the State of Ohio… . We personally feel we’re on the right track on this subject, and we produce the highest quality, most-effective, most cosmetic, most cost-effective system… anywhere in the world. We pride ourselves in having produced thousands of systems, and have had no complaints or problems with any of them in over 10 years. Knock on wood!... Paul Nicholson

Based on our home inspection at the time of purchase, we knew there was a radon issue in our home. We called RMES to do an estimate. They came to do an estimate and we thought the price was very reasonable. They were able to perform the work about a week later. They were punctual and completed the work in about four hours. This included installing the radon mitigation system and the new sump pump. RMES gives you a radon test to complete approx. two weeks after the work is done. We completed the test and our radon levels are now 0.5 pCi/L (before they were about 6 pCi/L). We are very happy with the work RMES did.

The guys at RMES provided radon mitigation service for us after we had a positive test during a home inspection. They had a very competitive bid and really took the time to investigate every aspect of placing the system and doing their best to make it blend in to our decor. They were punctual, efficient, and very knowledgeable. The work was completed in about 4 hours and the outside piping really blends in with our home - no other company offered to do that at what was a reasonable cost. They did the required retest and made sure we were sent the results to provide to our real estate agent. Would definitely recommend them again!

Obtained and used a free radon test kit from the local health dept. Results, taken on the first floor level, showed a level of 11.0, while acceptable limits are 0.0 - 4.0. Checked state website for info and contractor names, then Angie's list. Contacted Radon Measurement & Elimination Services (RMES) based on Angie's ratings and state certification. Spoke with Paul Nicholson, RMES owner, who provided comprehensive information via phone & mail, arranged for a service date within 5 days; date was changed due to illness, so contractor came on a Saturday. Installation was done by owner & son in under 8 hours, and included complete clean-up. Paul took the time to show and thoroughly explain everything that was done; both gentlemen were courteous and informative. They took time to show photos of other installations as part of the review for the possible locations for the exhaust, in order to make it as unnoticeable as possible. A follow-up test kit was provided. Follow-up test results showed a basement level of 1.9, and since the test was done during a particularly windy period, it is likely that the level is even lower. Having found out the danger of high levels of radon gas, I advise everyone I can to check the level in their home, and I absolutely would recommend RMES as a mitigation contractor!
Description of Work: Radon Mitigation-- by installation of submersible sump pumps in two sump crocks, replacing non-submersible pumps; installation of radon exhaust from one crock to outdoors through cement block wall; installation of air-tight seals on both crocks; installation of exhaust downspout and radon exhaust fan on exterior wall.

The owner and his son are the whole operation, and the education they provided us on systems, radon gas levels and danger, and varying quality and systems used by other companies was extensive and informative. They arrived on time as scheduled, and did a very clean and high quality job. It took roughly 1/2 day to install, and I would estimate the components ran a few hundred dollars. Between labor and material, I feel we got a very fair price for the quality and future support should we add more lines or replace a sump pump in our crock.
Description of Work: Sealed sump pump basin with pexiglass cover, sealed pipes and hoses running through cover, installed piping exiting house with fan which extended above the roofline. Very professional electrical work performed, and measurement of radon levels after installation verified the quality and need for system.

Our radon reading done earlier by the homeowner and sent in had a reading of 9 pCi/L and needed this done. A concern was also that the esthetics from the outside of the house was in keeping with the look and not stick out like a sore thumb so to speak. This father and son team are very knowledgeable and very easy to talk too. They explained what they would. do. when they would finish. The copper downspouts matched the existing and Chase Nicholson painted the plastic housing with the fan to match. a very professional job. Paul Nicholson the father Worked on the inside of the house and left the basement in very good condition. Also left the canister to use to check the radon level in two weeks. There is an appreciable decrease in the humidity in our basement. I wish We would have done this years ago. Their Web site is excellent. Very useful information to educate yourself on Radon plus the pictures of bad versus good installations is a real eye opener. This was a very pleasant experience.

This project started with me having purchased a mail-in radon test kit at Menards. The results indicated that we had a significant radon problem. I began reading about radon and also contacted the Wisconsin Dept. of Health - Radiation Protection Section. I spoke to Paul Tellier who was very knowledgeable and who assisted me in obtaining test kits to verify that the the original readings were accurate. These test kits later confirmed the same results as the original tests. I contacted several potential sources based on the certified listing from the Wisconsin Dept. of Health - Radiation Protection Section website. Paul Nicholson of RMES responded quickly to our telephone inquiry and came to provide an estimate on a Sunday afternoon when I could be home to talk with him. He was very easy to talk to and he demonstrated very good knowledge and experience with radon measurement and mitigation. He took the time to explain mitigation options, listed to my questions and concerns and provided easy to understand answers. He provided a written quote before leaving, which included a guarantee of reducing the radon measurement to below 2 pCi\L. When we called him later in the day to accept, he scheduled the work to be done within one week, noting that the work could not be done if it was lower than 20 degrees outside (the timeframe was mid-January). As promised, the work was started and completed in one day. Attention to detail and workmanship was excellent. Mail-in test kits were provided to conferm the radon level had been reduced to below 2 pCi\L and test results confirmed this.
Description of Work: Installed radon mitigation. Included sealing of cracks in basement floor, covering sump pump basins with polycarbonate sheets, installed one new sump pump, installed 4"pvc tubes into the floor of basement and crawl space, installed fan and ducting outside of home and provided test kits for verification of radon reduction.
