They installed a new submersible sump pump and the gutter matches my other gutters exactly. They tucked the fan behind a bush, which was great positioning. The install only took a couple of hours, which was also great.
He came out and quoted me for the system, and explained where he was going to put it. Originally it was going to be on the opposite corner to the sump, but I requested that since I had a submersible pump, it be sealed and vented from there to the outside.
On the day of installation, Paul and his son Chase came and installed the system in about 2 1/2 hours. It was very well installed, with the ducting matching the house color perfectly. The pump is tucked away behind some bushes, so it cannot be easily seen even though its on the road side. They also sealed any major cracks in the basement floor between the slabs, and foamed sealed an unused bathroom rough-in.
Chase explained how the system was installed, how to check that the pump was still working optimally. They also left a re-test which will be collected in a few days to ensure the system is working as installed.
Overall, a very quick and painless installation.
My advice to people selling their homes. Ensure that the person running your tests is certified to run the test. Whilst Wisconsin doesn't require it to be run by a certified tester, if you are being asked to install a certified system and spend upwards of $850, you want to make sure you are spending your money for the right reasons, especially if your number comes out as borderline fail (which mine did).
We had Paul Nicholson and his son install a radon mitigation system during Decembe,r 2013. The initial installation went well and the company's workmanship was good. When the radon unit was installed, Mr. Nicholson commented that the soil under the slab was very wet and the radon fan was operating at a very high vacuum. During the month of January the radon fan's vacuum dropped to zero. I called Mr. Nicholson and he stated that this was due to the extreme cold temperatures. He also stated that the vacuum would go up once the weather warmed. After a week, the vacuum went up (This happened several times during the winter). At this point everything was still going fine. During the later part of March, I was at my son's house and he showed me his radon system. Attached to the radon unit was a copy of the manual for installation of the RadonAway fan. The installation instructions state that in cold climates a condensation/ drainage unit should be installed in the outside pipe to prevent freeze up. The manual also states that the maximum operating vacuum for the RP 145 Radon fan is 1.7.(Our is operating at 1.8). I called Mr. Nicholson regarding these issues at the beginning of April. I was polite, but rather irritated with his responses to my calling attention to the fact that he did not follow the manual for installation of the radon fan. Mr. Nicholson's attitude was that he was more knowledgeable then the experts who wrote the manual and that everything was fine. He also stated that for an additional charge he would come back and install it properly. I stated to him that charging extra for work that was not done according to the installation instruction manual was unwarranted. At that point I politely ended the conversation with Mr. Nicholson by stating to him that we were going to contact consumer agencies regarding this matter. I filed a complaint during April (view on line) with the Better Business Bureau. The BBB informed us, after two weeks had gone by since the submission of the complaint, that they had not received a response from Mr. Nicholson. I gave Mr. Nicholson another week to repond to the BBB before I wrote this review on Angie's List.
Resolution: Per instructions in the RADONAWAY manual, install a condensation drain so the radon operates correctly in cold weather and do what is necessary to drop the system's vacuum into an acceptable range at no additional charge.
During the month of June, we attempted to contact Mr. Nicholson three times by e-mail, three times by telephone, and a registered letter.
The registered letter was returned to us by the USPS unopened on 7/25/2014. He did not reply to the emails or phone calls.
Mr. Nicholson's defense since we began this dispute has been that the radon level in our residence has been below 2.0 as stated in the written contract and the matters we referred to regarding the installation are unnecessary.
We purchased a constant radon monitoring device (Professional Model Safety Siren Pro Series, which costs over $120 dollars.) to enable us to monitor on a weekly basis the amount of radon in the air. Since we have been monitoring the radon, the level has increased each week and the current reading is now at 2.4 pCi/L..
The contract reads: "Guaranteed post mitigation test results will fall below the EPA action guidelines ofn2.0 pCi/l..."
We expect RMES to do what is necessary to remediate this situation and honor the contract which specifies a radon level below the EPA guidelines of 2.0 pCi/l. Failure to do so compromises the health of everyone residing in our residence.
"What he wants is additional work done at our expense... to accomplish nothing. We have 4500 systems working in WI.... all installed as we did (Member name removed) system. If you read our reviews on your site, you'll find we go up and above any company re: radon mitigation, anywhere. We go out of our way at our expense to make sure we have a A+ product at a reasonable cost.... done to exact EPA protocol. We're easily known as "the best" in SE WI by the State, DNR, ecological groups, Realtors, and our previous clients. I wrote a 2.5 page letter to (Member name removed) after he called us (attached), which explained why... what he was asking for.... was not EPA protocol, but others "opinions" relative to "good ideas".... in "their" opinion. I included a 1/2" of written back-up to illustrate what I was alleging in our letter to him. I followed this up with another letter a month later (also attached) as we never heard back from him regarding the first letter and materials we had sent to him. We never promised him anything he's "complaining" about, and we're not about to be cyber-bullied into taking action to change or add things which we never promised or charged (Member name removed) for, simply to placate him.... because he thinks they're "good ideas". If we had to do this for everyone, we would have been out of business long ago. I love your website as it gives people a way to rate vendors and the quality of work they receive for the money paid. Unfortunately, it also gives people a platform to make false accusations relative to their understanding or lack there of, regarding the work they receive..... things they feel are correct, even if they aren't experts in the field. We were hired by (Member name removed) because he felt we were experts. He did his "homework" on both Angie's List and the BBB before hiring us. He observed the installation of his system from 6' away most of the time we were installing. He didn't pay us anything until the system was installed to his satisfaction. He didn't call us about any of these issues he's alluding to until months after the system was installed..... and he certainly never inquired about these issues prior to awarding us the project so we could cover them with him up-front. If we had, we would have informed him of the same things we did in the letter(s) he was sent and received. His system is working as well as all of our other systems are working, and has produced the effect we were hired to achieve. Long-story short... we're done! Thanks!"
