Initially the service seemed very positive, reliable, trustworthy.... Then, we lost thousands of dollars of valuables due to a THEFT by two of their employees. The company was difficult to work with. Ultimately this company and their insurance company did not reimburse us for the entire loss. It was a nightmare. We were out thousands of dollars, not only from the theft, but attorney's fees. In addition ,we had to spend countless hours dealing with the police, the court system, attorneys........
WE WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY>
Bonding and insurance does not insure that the homeowners losses will be completely covered. It was a wake up call to what can happen when companies hire potential felons and are not willing to cover the cost of the loss.
We gathered initial estimates from several companies and decided to go with Certified Restoration Inc., based on price.
What was initially estimated as weeks, took months to complete, so we got to know the workers fairly well (there were only 2 or 3). They were always courteous and polite, they worked really hard, sometimes staying at our house until 9:00 pm, which is a whole different issue, but luckily we're night people, however I think they didn't have the equipment or man power necessary to complete the job (or skill set?)
From the moment work started there were problems. The was no care taken to:
a. Protect our newly finished floors from boot marks, dust, scratches, dirt, mud etc.
b. Plastic was not hung once construction of the walls started, resulting in a huge amount of dust covering our entire living room, including a newly purchased television and couch.
c. No plastic or paper was laid on our recently professionally cleaned carpet, which has resulted in stains and scuffs all over it. It will need to be replaced entirely
The job took much longer than originally estimated - days vs. months (but no surprise when dealing with construction.) The sheetrock was almost universally hung incorrectly (the workers themselves commented on this!) resulting in either bowed walls, sheetrock ending 1/4 of an inch above the trim, or workers having to redo whole walls because they hung them wrong the first time.
The trim was reordered several times and then hung - except that it was the wrong trim (wrong design and material, so that it didn't match what was already in the room.) When it was hung there were inch wide gaps on either side that were puttied over.
The nails used to hang the trim split it in many sections. Trim was hung that actually had missing lower portions, in other words broken pieces. The sheetrock was shimmied out so that trim will never lie flush unless the wall is redone.
While hanging the sheetrock the radiator was moved which caused water to leak, soaking the carpet, the wood floor beneath and leaked down into the basement where it soaked through our belongings including an expensive vintage amp.
A secondary ornamental trim was never replaced, which we were fine with originally, with the stipulation that the wall be sanded and smoothed over. This never happened.
Too numerous to list are the strange holes and gashes, the piles of dust and the fact that the dry wall doesn?t extend behind the outlet plates. Outlet plates are now adhered to the wall with caulking to fill in those gaps.
Nick, the owner of the company came in to observe and agreed that his team was not proficient in hanging trim, so he offered to hire another company to complete the job. Then alerted us later that the deal fell through and he would have the same workers, that he claimed previously were not up to the task, complete the project.
Cap, one of the workers, agreed with us that he would be "embarrassed to have this trim in his house." Brandon, another worker said he didn't have the appropriate tools or man power to complete the project properly. It was also suggested that we could go to Home Depot and finish parts of the project ourselves...
The sad part is that they all seemed really nice, and wanted to help us get the work done properly, coming back numerous times to "fix" their mistakes. Unfortunately this never resulted in anything better. When we contact Ann Munson at their office, she was very abrasive and defensive, called us "picky" and concluded that we had verbally signed off on the project, despite the fact that she would have no idea whether this was the case. Their warranty is arbitrary and in our experience void once they claim the project is complete.
Overall a huge lesson to learn, and a very unpleasant experience.
