I thought his design was good. His material was good. His workmanship are good. His desire to get it exactly right in the way I wanted this to. Price is reasonable. I would use them again.

I had contacted Dogwood Designs and Landscaping last year about installing a fence to be paid for by myself and a neighbor. Sam came and gave me an estimate which I would have gone for if my neighbor would have agreed. The neighbor backed off on the project so it did not get done. I am having a retaining wall installed and when I saw Dogwood Designs does such things I called him based upon our previous dealings. Sam came out and took all the measurements for the estimate and answered all my questions about the job. The wall is approx. 175ft. ranging from 8' down to 2' and requires some excavating and fill. He e-mailed me a few days later saying that he was sorry he did not say so when we met but after looking at the size of the job it was just to big for him. That is something you don't see to often these days when a company turns down a job. His integrity guarantees he will get my business when the need arises.

I have been very satisfied with my experience with Dogwood Designs and Landscaping. I was working with a neighbor to build a new fence. The plans did not go through, but I am happy with the experiences. They came out and spent a good half hour or so looking things over. They showed me previous examples of work. They also were able to answer all of my questions. I did not get the estimate immediately. They emailed me a comprehensive breakdown of supplies and labor. I would like to use them if the opportunity comes up.

Sam did a great job in building the fence and helping us with the design and material selection. Sam is very conscientious and was intent on everything being absolutely perfect. He is easy to work with and was accommodating when we wanted to make changes during the work. We were very happy with the results. HIs price was quite fair for the high-quality fence we wanted. He is upfront about all the costs and he gave us the exact breakdown between labor and the material costs (which he passed through with no mark-up).
Description of Work: I hired Sam Hyde, owner of Dogwood Designs, to build a custom fence along the side of my property last August. The fence was about 100 feet long with a lattice on top and was constructed of cedar.

This was the second job Sam Hyde has done for us. Last year he did a beautiful job with our side fence and gate. We were once again very happy with the end result of this job, it was a pleasure to work with him and the cost was right. He can be trusted to take the extra time and care when difficulties arise. The tree stump that had to be removed was sitting right on top of our natural gas line. It's removal went without incidence. He did an impressive job of cutting the pavers to create some nice curves in our walk. He was careful to not damage any nearby landscaping. He leaves the worksite neat and organized when he leaves for the day and cleans everything up at the end of the job. Mostly we appreciated his knowledge and guidance when planning a job.
Description of Work: Sam removed the lawn, a couple small bushes and a small tree stump from our front and side yards. He installed a small patio and walk of cobblestone pavers from our front sidewalk across this small yard area and around to our side gate. In the side yard he installed a crushed rock cover. He built two sets of stairs, one coming from our backyard to the side yard and another set coming down from our backyard deck.

Sam did a fantastic job. The fence is beautiful and high quality. Sam worked with us to understand the variation in options for different levels of quality materials. He picked out nice boards and returned those that werent up to his standards. He customized the fence to our design preference and accomodated some unusual gate designs, in one case a wide driveway gate for infrequent truck deliveries to access our yard, with a standard gate on the other side for higher human traffic. Hard to describe, but he understood what I was asking for and built it exactly to specifications. He designed and built the fence around a large old maple tree and a retaining wall in ways that are attractive and creative and do not impact the stability of the structure. We also discussed the design in the context of wind resistance as other neighbors had had issues with wind storms blowing down parts of their fences and how different quality of materials would affect the life and resilience of the fence. He offered suggestions of ways to cut costs where quality of materials didnt matter and how we could shift costs to beef up other areas where it did matter - like 6and quot; fenceposts instead of 4and quot; on the gates. He was just really easy to work with and trustworthy and I know if there is any issue we can call him and it will be resolved to our satisfaction. I am already trying to figure out what other projects I will hire him for because i think he can do pretty much whatever you want and it will be done with quality.
Description of Work: We contracted for a 5' cedar fence around two properties, including two driveway gates and one standard gate, designed to accomodate trees in path of fence and merge with neighbors fencing on either side

From the beginning estimate, Sam was full of ideas and obviously cared about the smallest details. I initially was going to hire two separate conractors to do the retaining wall and fence, but he said he could do both in an integrated fashion. He mentioned that he only selected the best materials and throughout the project this proved to be quite the case. He was very communicative and punctual throughout the project. Everything was done on time and budget and looks fantastic. I would not hesitate to hire his company again.

The backyard in our townhouse was always wasted space. It was too tiny and too shady to hang out in (we used the roof deck for that), and the lawn was always difficult to maintain. We called in Sam to help figure out a creative, yet affordable, paver solution. You could tell right off the bat he knew his stuff and was very thoughtful about how to approach the job. He put down pavers bounded by cedar blocks, given the severe slope in the backyard, and the whole area looks much cleaner and inviting that it ever had before. He gave us helpful tips on how to treat the plant beds that we left around the edges, as they've been neglected because we never use the backyard. It was a pleasure dealing with Sam; he was extremely knowledgeable and professional and completed the job on time and on budget. HIGHLY recommend him and would use him again.

Sam is an honest, knowledgeable, reliable person who does impeccable work. He first met to survey the project, provide samples, answer questions, brainstorm ideas, and provide an estimate. He understood exactly what we were looking for, and even enhanced the idea. When he actually showed up to do the work, he turned out to be the most detail oriented and honest craftsperson I've ever worked with (and we have worked with a wide variety of service providers, remodeled our kitchen, bathroom, floors, landscaped, etc.). He was punctual, timely, on budget, open, great communicator, and his work product is perfect. I highly recommend him for any type of fence and hardscaping work.

They bought more materials than the previous landscaper did and charged us less money. They charged us the going rate for this kind of stuff. We spent about $3600. They came back and they worked with us. We had a contract with them. Mr. Hyde is the owner and he is really good. They are wonderful. They gave us exactly what we wanted and they could work around some of the damage that the previous landscaper had done. They corrected a lot of things. They did it perfectly. They listened to what we wanted and they did everything right. I would tell others to use their services because they are good. It is just one guy who basically works alone and then he gets help when he needs it. He knows what he is doing. He is fair and reasonably priced. He is a man of his word. The quality of their work is excellent. We would use their services in the future too. In fact, we are going to call them again.
Description of Work: Dogwood Designs & Landscaping tore out all the bad work done by the previous landscaper, redid it and made a lot of corrections. They started on the 25th of October and redid the stoop because that was dangerous. We had a couple of guests slip because they had put stones in bad angles. We had them come in October and November to fix things and they are still fixing. They drilled holes for drainage on some of the walks and moved a couple of rocks around. They also did some other stone work in our yard. My last interaction with them was in December of 2010.

Sam came out and removed several cubic yards of river rock from a pathway from our front steps through our side yard to our back patio. He then prepared the area (~140 sq. ft.) with crushed rock and sand for a flagstone pathway. We picked out Variegated Pennsylvania Bluestone, and he was careful to pick out pieces that matched since there was a huge variation in color. We store our garbage, yard waste, and recycling cans in the side yard, and Sam suggested we might want to have smaller gaps between the stones where we store them. He ended up cutting the stone to leave narrow 1/4-1", so it looks like a patio area. Given how low his estimate was, we thought he would just lay the flagstone with large 3-5" gaps for the rest of the walkway, but he actually cut the stone, so the gaps between the stones are only about 1-2". It's beautiful! We are so happy with the results, and we've had all the neighbors and total strangers comment on how nice it is. We would definitely use Sam again. We're actually planning to contact him when we're ready to tear out our lawn and re-landscape the entire front yard.
Description of Work: - Removed existing river rock and boulders in a pathway - Prepared the area (~140 sq. ft.) with crushed rock and sand for a flagstone pathway - Picked out 1 1/2" thick flagstone pieces that matched in color - Cut the flagstone for narrow (<1") gaps for a 4' x 5' storage area and for 1-2" gaps for the rest of the walkway

Dogwood Design's Sam Hyde and his team did a FANTASTIC job replacing my old fence with a beautive custom lattice fence. I have a large lot for Ballard and needed to replace the crazy patchwork fencing that was literally falling apart. While my yard had a few surprises, Sam was very thorough in discussing the options, documenting any cost changes and getting approval prior to doing additional work. We found some burried cement walls and a few invasive tree stumps and I only had $200 of additional cost for equipment rental and lumber to better support a raised bed. Sam went over and beyond ensuring good relations with my neighbors by being conscientious about start and stop times and making sure the fence looked good for them as well. Even my neighbors across the street love it! Sam and his team are very professional, fair, timely, honest and respectful. I feel like I hired craftsmen that really care about the quality of work. I highly recommend Sam and encourage you to contact him for your next project.

We spent about $2,000 on that work, but he did not have to remove any old fence or wall because it was all done before he came. He gave us an estimate and was true to his estimate and also worked during the rain as it was it the rainiest season here and he worked straight through. He had a helper for the first couple of days and then did all the rest himself. He is an excellent craftsman and is really easy to work with. We already had him down to come back design another wall inside the yard and would have him back in a minute. We think his rates are extremely reasonable and he came in pretty much on time and on target. He is great and we think the world of him about him.

After meeting several different people and explaining what we wanted done to the front yard, Sam was the only one willing to do the hardscaping and the fence. Most people do one or the other and aren't willing to go beyond that. Sam was not only willing, but clearly understood what our goals were for the front of our house and quickly understoond and shared our vision. (some of our bids included design goals that matched the designers vision but not ours) Sam was also very much in the same range on price compared to all the other bids. The thing I liked most about his bid is that he detailed out exactly what everything was going to cost. When we had to make some minor adjustments in design, he was flexible in those changes and provided a clear list of what the cost would be to those changes. Sam was also clear from the beginning on how much time it would take and he completed the work in the amount of time he said it would take. In the end we have a beautiful new front yard that we get compliments on all the time. I highly recommend using Sam for any hardscaping or fencing work you are planning to do!
Description of Work: Sam cleared out the old and overgrown garden in our front yard, removed the path from sidewalk to house Installed a new picket fence, a new flagstone path from sidewalk to house, built a small wall with steps at the sidewalk to yard entrance.

One of the best contractors I've worked with. Sam provided the most detailed estimate I've ever seen, and stuck to it. Hard working, detail oriented, conscientious, thoughtful and professional. The fact that he is the owner/operator and does the jobs himself greatly appealed to me and it is clear he takes pride in his work. The block style wall I chose formed a pattern that required careful and exact construction and was a little more difficult to work with than the standard block. I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome. Would hire again for any landscaping/hardscaping project.
Description of Work: Tore down old concrete retaining wall and base in front of home. Excavated soil, installed crushed rock base and built replacement block wall (approx. 3 ft tall and 50 ft long in 2 sections) with caps, backfilled with crushed rock, and a drainage system.

Sam was super to work with, probably the best person I've ever hired to do anything on my house. He's friendly, easy to talk to, and asked me a lot of questions to make sure he build exactly what I wanted. He was willing to go the extra mile to make me happy. A few examples: he removed an old tree in the patio area (at a low extra charge), to save me from hiring a stump grinder; he jackhammered and removed some old concrete footings that were cluttering the area because they were too heavy for me to move; and he took the best soil from the excavated area and moved it to my new raised beds, rather than dumping it in a pile somewhere. Sam is also a meticulous craftsman, with an eye for detail. He was honest with me that the plan I gave him was more technically challenging than his previous work (more sizes of cut stone, some stone under a staircase that had to be hand set), but he took it on and did a perfect job. There were several stones he cut that didn't turn out as nicely as he wanted, so he cut new ones at his own expense. He didn't want to just get the job done and move on to the next one -- he wanted it perfect. Sam was also very professional. He always showed up on time and cleaned up after himself. He started and ended on the days he said he would. The bill he presented was clearly itemized and exactly matched the expenses in his estimate before the job. I priced all the stone myself before hiring anyone, so I know the amount he charges was very fair. I'm already considering future jobs on which I can hire him.
Description of Work: Sam built a 15' x 18' bluestone patio in my backyard, to my specifications. I provided a measured drawing of the sizes of stone and layout I wanted, with offsets from the house. Sam and his coworkers excavated the area, including the removal of a mock orange tree. Sam delivered the stone and laid it out to my specification.

From start to finish Sam performed an excellent job. He provided advice but allowed us to make decisions that were appropriate. He installed the parking space first and then followed up with the stone patio. Again at every point he was sure to ask our opinion. For example when the stone was brought in he went out of his way to make sure it was the quality and color we were hoping for. His budget estimates and time estimates were accurate and if anything came up along the way he let us know as soon as it came up. All in all the result is a beautiful patio and parking space that is functional and does not puddle up. Excellent work!

Sam was great. He was very detail oriented and explained every aspect of the job prior to quoting. He had several good ideas that we incorporated into our design. He was on time and kept the worksite very clean. We got quotes from about 5-6 different companies. Sam gave the best price and he was very conscious about telling us where we might want to save some money. Overall, we were thrilled with his service and are recommending him to friends.
