Scaup failed to complete the job. We finally had to fire them. The final blow came when we had to pay them extra for upgraded doors. We paid the charges on the change order, but Scaup failed to use the money to actually purchase the doors. We have now paid for the doors on our own; this means we paid an extra $1,960 for them. Scaup caused us a lot of stress and aggravation. The company cut corners whenever possible and relentlessly promised to do things that it then failed to do. People failed to arrive to do work when they were supposed to. The electrical work failed inspection twice the company had a less-than-competent electrician who showed up erratically and we had to come up with our own electrician before the electrical work finally passed muster. As indicated above, the first HVAC system that was put in turned out to be completely inadequate and included a faulty plan for venting. Because of its faulty work, the company actually had to rip out an entire HVAC system and install a new one, including a new furnace that we didn t really need. The company allowed incompetent workers to work on my property. These people not only did a bad job; they also caused real damage to my property. They cut farther into support beams than was really safe, and dumped huge amounts of dirt in my backyard up against my siding. Beyond all this, the job took almost three times as long as promised and part of why I hired the company in the first place was because they promised to get it done in a relatively short amount of time. Here are some more of the problems we experienced: 1) The company left the construction area wide open for anyone who cared to enter. I had to barricade the upstairs since the basement was wide open, making the upstairs accessible. 2) The company failed to clean up the job site during most of the job. Cleanup was intermittent and sloppy. My neighbors justifiably complained about trash left on their property. 3) The ejector pump that the company installed failed to work on several occasions. This resulted in large amounts of water spreading to areas of the basement. On one occasion, this happened on a Friday night and the project manager didn t even bother to come out and check. Fortunately a worker was doing some overtime that weekend. He said he could clean up the water if I had a shop cleanup device. I happened to have one. That was the only reason we didn t spend an entire weekend with water covering a quarter of the basement floor. 4) Plants were trampled. 5) A screen was lost, a hose reel was broken, a window got broken, and the washer got stained. The worst part of the experience was that we were endlessly strung along with promises that someone would show up "by 10 on Friday" (for example) and then no one would appear. This became incredibly stressful. I believe this company is about to go out of business. I hope this is the case because the owners, Bryce Baker and Kris Morin, clearly don't know how to run a company.
Description of Work: We hired Scaup to turn a full basement with a low ceiling into a space that would include two bedrooms, a study, a laundry room, a bathroom, and an open family room area. Part of the work involved relocating heating ducts, which were hanging down, and replacing an unsafe staircase. On Day 1, Scaup tore out all the existing ducts. The person in charge of the crew then created a plan for laying out the ductwork. He claimed that he had a great deal of experience with heating systems and ducts. His plan involved sending heat into the basement and depended on the concept of heat rising to heat the first floor. His argument was very convincing, and both I and the Scaup supervisor gave him a go-ahead. The crew leader also talked us into moving the existing furnace from its position at the center of the basement to a position inside the crawl space, away from the center of the basement and into a side position. The existing furnace was an 80% furnace that was vented through the chimney. The crew leader s plan involved moving the furnace and then venting it out the side of the house. There was some question as to whether the furnace could be vented in this way, but the crew leader claimed that he had double checked this issue with a friend who was an expert with furnaces. After the furnace had been moved and almost all the duct work put up, a licensed HVAC contractor was called in. The contractor pointed out that: 1) The crew leader s plan for using the heat rising idea would never work. He indicated that the kind of ducting that had been installed would actually block hot air from moving even into areas of the basement. He indicated that with the system suggested by the crew leader, we would freeze during the winter and probably have pipes freeze as well. 2) The wrong size and kind of ducts had been put in. 3) The 80% furnace could NOT be vented through the wall. It has to be vented upward. 4) After stringing us along for about three weeks with daily promises that someone would come and redo the duct work, Scaup finally hired a competent company to remove the faulty system and create an adequate one.

It was a horrible nightmare. Remodeling is stressful, especially when you are forced to live in it with two small children. I was assured that they would make sure that their belongings were cleaned up and that it wouldn't impact us. They left their tools, cigarette butts, and other materials all over. They didn't tarp the addition, so it basically rained in our garage ruining my husband's lab and kept him from his work. He stayed up 'til 5am to finish it. Pissed off our neighbors because they had to tarp the house at 8pm at night. My diamond engagement ring and other pieces of jewelery disappeared. They broke our garage doors; kept our house key even after we decided not to use them anymore and are very unresponsive in trying to close out our account. They owe us approximately $12,000 to $16,000 for the work that was not completed. They didn't accurately bid the project because they didn't take into consideration the difficulty in trying to redo a tile roof, they didn't anticipate the issues of trying to do plumbing with a house that is on a slab, and didn't look for the most reasonable prices for subcontractors. The architect that they referred us to wanted to charge us $100 per hr. at 80 hours for the plans for a 530 sq ft addition. Our architect charged us $1.50 per sq ft. They are now utilizing the architect we referred, so I guess I should charge them a consulting fee. Also, we found out that they owe Dept. of Revenue $40,000.
Description of Work: We hired them to build a family room addition even after it took them over 5 months to complete a remodel of our bathroom with an additional 2-3 months to finish the punch list. After the 2 months it took to get the permit, with me pushing the city to issue the permit and 1 1/2 months later, they were already behind schedule by one month. When I asked why the siding hadn't been installed I was told by Bryce Baker that they didn't have enough cash to pay for the siding. This was with my $12,000 deposit and $20,0000 we had paid which included an invoice that had $2,000 for siding. They completed the framing of the addition but only had one inspection that was signed off. The last inspection had multiple corrections that they never bothered to fix.

The presentation was great. We would have asked more questions before we started if we could do it again. We added things throughout the work that increased the price of the bid. There was some miscommunication but we are pleased with the work. I am very impressed with Brett Church, he was the project manager. He was very detailed and was very good at problem solving. We were very pleased with the day to day communication with delays and equipment/workers. Our biggest problem was with our dogs and confining our dogs from the work area and the workers accidentally leaving the gates open on occasion.
Description of Work: They added 750 square feet to my house. We added a bathroom with laundry room, shower, etc. and another room and another big room-dining area and family room.
