Since my grandfather was an official with IBEW Local 48 in Portland, OR I feel a little sensitive about electricians and am appalled to have a company like Citilights Electric in business. We contracted with Citilights Electric in 2006 for new electrical service for our home in Seattle, and we are still addressing issues related to the shoddy and incomplete work of Citilights Electric. They left us without a final inspection which was completed in 2009. The home had old knob and tube wiring and part of the contract clearly stated to remove old wiring and service. From the beginning, Citilights Electric did not meet the timeline, the work scope and it took over two years before we could get a final inspection. Finally, Dennis the owner came out and finished sloppy work done by the first electrician and the City signed off. The electrician who did the work damaged the walls to such a degree that our drywall contractor stated (King Drywall, the best ever) that he has NEVER seen such lousy work. We just recently sold our home and the buyer's inspection showed that Citilights Electric vented the bathroom fan into a false ceiling. This means that our bathroom fan has been venting into an enclosed space inside the house for two years, instead of to the exterior! When I contacted them, they said they never install ceiling fans, and that they had completed their scope of work. The real question is why did they install the fan into a false ceiling? Nothing was ever said to us that we needed to hire a different contractor to install the fan. I contacted the City of Seattle who said that electricians routinely install bathroom vents and that Citilights Electric obviously should NOT have installed to a false ceiling. We hired someone else to complete the fan-vent installation, but asked Citilights Electric to come out and demo/remove the old knob and tube as stated in the original contract. Andrea (who needs a course in customer service) said that they had done everything as requested during the last four years and that they were not responsible for anything more. Obviously, had the work been done correctly in the first place, we would NOT be calling. We intend to hire a reputable electrician to finish the work, and will likely file a claim against the Citilights Electric for the removal of the old wiring. YOU CAN FIND A BETTER COMPANY - DO NOT USE THIS CONTRACTOR

"All the work done by Citilights Electric was PASSED by Seattle City inspectors. If inspector requested something to be done we did it. Please see public inspection notes. http://web1.seattle.gov/DPD/permitstatus/Project.aspx?id=6095758"

Relatively simple job to replace an on/off light switch with a dimmer became a problem. No planning ahead on their part; a one day job turned into something that took them TWO MONTHS to finish. They were hours late for most appointments. Sometimes we would call their office to ask where they were, wait while the office staff called the tech, be reassured that the tech would arrive in the next 15 minutes, and then still have to wait another couple of hours. On top of everything, it was at least my impression that they over-charged. Oh... and they drilled two small but obvious holes in our wall as part of a temporary fix (even after we asked them not to), and then when they came back to do the permanent installation, the tech wasn't able to do anything about the holes in our wall, and didn't bother making any arrangements on our behalf. So the holes in our wall remain. Annoying.
Response from Citilights Electric Inc
"Citilights Electric NEVER charged the customer for the return trips nor for the install of this "custom RF switch cover mounting plate" The reason this took 2 months was because the RF Switch plate was "in production" by Lutron. This was not a shelf item. Citilights Electric charged ONLY for the cost the special ordered item. Therefore no additional charges were charged. Citilights Electric was first called by customer to Troubleshoot the switches. Originally a handyman was hired to work on them and threw away the switches. Customer was advised that in order for switches to work a temp fix that required two "pin holes" for anchors would be left until the custom mount cover plate came in. Customer has never called Citilights Electric to complain or offer Citilights Electric an opportunity to satisfy customer. Citilights Electric cannot control manufacturer production time, and never charged additional work charges to customer. Install of RF Switch plate was done for no charge. Previous report by customer states that we did excellent work and gave A+ rating."

The electricians were professional and courteous. They asked my opinion every step of the way... where the flexible track lighting should go... which direction I would like it... Also, when I wasn't quite sure, they would give me their opinion which was helpful. Also, if I changed my mind, they were totally cool with readjusting and readjusting and readjusting. At the very end, they made sure I was satisfied before they left. I never felt like they were pressured for time.

The work was done over several months, partially due to the difficulty of getting junk out of the way for them. They were very professional and were responsive to my requests for outlets and light fixtures. The work passed inspection without a problem and I am enjoying my upgraded service! No more turning off the microwave if the coffee pot is on!

I feel totally taken advantage of by this company. I went with them because I believed their work would be solid, unfortunately, I was ripped off again. The company did come back after CRP and did the additional checking of outlets that they were supposed to check in the first place, they still left work undone and did not replace all of the housing. They should have changed out the stuff that was bad, not just leave it for me to do.

"CITILIGHTS ELECTRIC TOOK THIS CUSTOMER'S CALL AND CONCERN VERY SERIOUSLY. FIRST: THE CUSTOMER WAS TOLD WHAT THE CHARGE WOULD BE BEFORE ANYONE WAS DISPATCHED. SECONDLY: CITIIGHTS ELECTRIC DID NOT CHARGE AN AFTER HOURS FEE. THIS CUSTOMER HAD NO POWER IN HER LIVING AREA AND WAS WITHOUT LIGHTS. A ELECTRICIAN CALLED THE CUSTOMER BEFORE SHOWING UP TO CONFIRM HIS ARRIVAL. AT THAT TIME THIS CALL COULD HAVE BEEN CANCELED. THE ELECTRICIAN GAVE THIS CUSTOMER A TROUBLESHOOT RATE AGAIN BEFORE PERFORMING ANY REPAIRS. CUSTOMER AGREED TO HAVE THE WORK PERFORMED. THE ELECTRICIAN DID FIND THAT THE OUTLET AND WIRING WERE BURNT. THIS REPAIR WAS MADE IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME AND ALL LIGHTS CAME ON. THE CUSTOMER WAS NOT LEFT IN THE DARK ABOUT PRICE NOR SERVICE. CUSTOMER'S CALL WAS TAKEN ON 3/27/08 @ 4:36 PM ELECTRICIAN WAS AT CUSTOMER HOME DURING THE HOURS 6:00-7:10 PM. CUSTOMER CALLED CITILIGHTS ELECTRIC ON 3/31 TO COMPLAINED ABOUT THE CHARGE. IF AT ANY TIME THE CUSTOMER WAS NOT OK WITH THE PRICE GIVEN UPFRONT SHE THEN HAD AN OPTION TO DECLINE SERVICE. CUSTOMER ALSO COMPLAINED THAT HER COVER PLATE WAS CROOKED. THE OFFICE AGREED TO SEND A ELECTRICIAN OUT TO THE CUSTOMERS HOME THAT NIGHT AT 5:30. ELECTRICIAN CALLED TO SAY THE HOMEOWNER WAS NOT HOME AT SCHEDULED TIME. CUSTOMER CALLED TO SAY THEY WERE LATE. ELECTRICIAN WAITED FOR CUSTOMER TO GET HOME. COVER PLATE WAS REPLACED ALONG WITH TAKING APART 3 ADDITIONAL PLATES AGAIN TO ASSURE CUSTOMER NO OTHER WIRES WERE BURNT. CUSTOMER'S RATING IS UNFAIR."

Scheduling was easy. Dennis was late to the appt. but called ahead to let me know. A four person crew came in and roughed out and ran wires the entire basement (800 sq ft) and five rooms in about three hours (this was in new construction in our basement). We also had them fix a couple of funky things with our upstairs wiring (moved three wall switches) and they installed two outdoor lights and wired the wall switches. After the sheet rock was installed, they came back a few weeks later to install lights and finish the trim out. The new work was $3500, the additional work was $750. We used them later to update our wiring upstairs. Dennis suggested it at the time and I wish we would done it. At the time it just seemed to intrusive; in retrospect, it would have been much easier (with easy access from the basement) and about 40% less expensive.
