Well knowledge phone person gave me my options and costs to help make a decision on replacing my 10 year old water heater with a burnt out heating element. The installers arrived early of the two hour window on the next day, a Sunday, and completed the work in about an hour. Water heater was installed professionally and neatly including upgrades to bring everything to code which included air expansion tank, stand and earthquake straps. All costs were explained up front. Everything went very well.
Description of Work: Replace existing electric water heater with a new one. Added expansion tank, new stand and earthquake straps and bonded water pipes to bring up to code. Extended the water lines for the new height of tank due to the new stand and added additional pipe insulation.

Thanks for your feedback. I tried to look up your job but we did not have that address in our system. We also don't show a Member in 2010. In any case, if you give me the worksite address I can look it up. I'd like to research this and determine which technician came to your house so that we can find out if the bid was appropriate and whether or not the technician needs additional training. Regardless of who is right or wrong, we also try to redress all customer complaints so please give us a chance to research this. You can e-mail me at jasonh@fastwaterheater.com.

Ryan Hamilton did the work; he had done work for a friend of mine so I went with them. It was a pretty simple thing and passed the inspection with no problem. He did all the permitting. The pricing was fine. I did have some issues with the office people. Ryan was the greatest thing ever.
Description of Work: I used Fast Water Heater Company to fix a gas line. He extended the line so I could hook up a gas stove. He extended it from my furnace into the kitchen because it wasn't plumbed for that.

Sub-contracted from Home Depot to replace water heater. Original Home Depot price increased by items required by code. Rich with Fast Water Heater Company explained all additional costs and the final pricing thoroughly. He worked quickly but ultimately discovered that the tank originally selected was too large for the space. He offered several options and once a alternate selection was made quickly exchanged the tank and completed the installation and clean up. A brief return visit was required to tighten a connection that started to drip. I am very satisfied with the installation and the work and options provided by Rich.

Great service and professionalism from our first contact on the phone through the install on a Sunday (there was no extra charge for a weekend install). We would certainly recommend this company to our friends, family and we would certainly use them again. We only regret not getting an on site estimate from this company and others first; we simply looked at the "basic install" price as available at The Home Depot and Lowe's and saw a comparable price with Fast Water Heater Company, so we went with them. The resulting problem was all the other necessities that were required for our install that took our bill from $1099.00 to $1895.07. Yes, this information was provided before any work was started, but we did not want to start the search over again, so we went with the increase of $796.07.

Our water heater went out at 9:30 at night and we called FAST Water Heater Company with information found on Angie's List. We were quated a price for a 40-gallon gas hot water heater and installation. We called two other companies and were given prices for the unit and installation quite a bit higher than the quote from FAST and the warrenty was for 6 years instread of the 15-year warranty from FAST. FAST was able to schedule the work for the day we called and other companies wanted 9 days out and 3 days out. We settled on a time frame and Jeff, the installation technician, arrived within that time frame. Jeff surveyed the area and gave us a quote that superceeded the price given over the phone but he explained each additional charge and that if he were to do the work he would need to bring the connections and surrounding area up to code. The work was completed in a professional and timely manner and the heater was already giving warm water.
Description of Work: Jeff arrived within the time frame given and began to assess what was needed. The price was different than quoted for a new water heater and installation, however, Jeff advised he needed to bring the pipe, vent and combustion air to code. After he explained what was needed and why we could understand the difference. An Angies List coupon was accepted and a senior discount was given. We were very happy with the work Jeff performed and he left the home after completing a 10 point installation Quality Checklist to the satisfaction of my husband and leaving the work area clean and neat. Thank you Jeff.

Thanks for your review. We are very glad we were able to service you to your satisfaction. Sears is a great company. There are many advantages to going through a large retailer for this type of work. However, all big box retailers do markup our cost to them so keep this into consideration when you consider pricing. This is not unique to Sears. Customers are also welcome to contact us directly. However, if you contact us through Home Depot, Sears or Lowe's the cost ill include their markup. Also, once you've contacted through that channel, we cannot service you directly. Thanks again for your business!

The Fast serviceman, Brandon, arrived on time. He explained why the original phone quote needed to be increased because more than the tank needed replacement and/or upgrading to be in compliance with current codes. This included the expansion tank, larger connector vent, new earthquake straps, and sediment trap. Brandon was very professional and did not high pressure me to continue with the purchase, but since I had received other "approximate" higher quotes from other companies, I allowed him to complete the project. I was given an Angie's List senior discount of 5% on the price of the tank, and the fee for the straps was waived, perhaps because I already had them on the old tank. The work was done in less than two hours, and the clean-up was outstanding. It cost about 25% more than I expected to pay, but I am delighted to have clean hot water again!
Description of Work: Installed new gas water heater, pressure tank, filter, earthquake straps and larger vent.

See description of services performed. Installer was very professional and answered all of our questions -- we had a lot of them. We were told originally that it would require a 195,000 BTU unit to power our 3000 sq ft home. Dennis told us the lesser expensive 145,000 BTU was very adequate and we should go with that. We have been using the hot water full bore and he is right -- we have hot water all the time even with two showers and the dishwasher going at the same time.
Description of Work: The reason I gave a top rating for price is because I got several bids on the same installation and there was nobody who charged less. We chose the tankless water heater (actually a hybrid type by Eternal). Dennis was the installer for our water heater. We had initially asked about a tankless and then decided to go with a tank. When Dennis arrived, he explained in more detail to us how each install would go and carefully figured out the cost. We very much appreciated the information he provided us and we decided to go with the Eternal Hybrid water heater. Dennis was careful to make sure we understood how the installation would be carried out, where a hole would be created, and that we needed up an upgrade to our gas meter. He arranged to have PSE come out and replace the gas meter (at no charge to us). His work was very professional and he communicated to us all the details that we needed to know to make a decision. There were no surprises whatsoever. He completed the job within a reasonable amount of time and everything was working when he finished. The area was clean and tidy when he finished, and he once again went over the directions with us to make sure we understood the operation of the water heater. He did give us the manual but we appreciated his good instructions that were very complete and well summarized. We are very happy with the water heater and very impressed with the good service and installation work provided by Dennis.

On Sunday night our 75 gallon water heater began leaking. On Monday I started calling around. Nobody had a water heater in stock this large, but one thought they could get one the next day. Fast Water Heater said a large tank water heater would take one to two weeks and suggested their tech come out to consult with us on going tankless. Unconvinced that this would make financial sense, or even work for our large household, I invited Fast and another company to come out and give their pitch. By the time Dennis came later that Monday afternoon, I had already been visited by another company promoting tankless, and had also recieved a price for a 75 gal tank water heater ($2,700!) from a third company. Dennis was very knowledgeable about the demands a tankless would put on our gas consumption and took the time to check all our other major gas appliances (furnace, dryer, 5-burner cooktop) to determine the current gas volume per hour we were using and how big the tankless heater could be. He also checked the size of our gas meter, the length of the run to the heater, and our current gas pipe size to once again ensure the heater received adequate gas flow to work properly without starving our other appliances. Unlike the other companies who had quote 199,000 ft3/hr units, Dennis advised that a 150,000 ft3/hr unit was the biggest allowable and would still deliver 6 gpm of hot water. He referred to code-compliant sizing charts to make and show me how he made these calculations, and assured me the installation would pass city/county inspection (said a completed permit application would be sent to us). Since in our case a tankless was not much more expensive than a tank-style water heater, we decided to go with Fast Water Heater. Dennis returned the next morning with the Eternal Hybrid (has a tiny pre-heat tank) System, supplies, materials and tools. He installed it all by himself over the course of six hours and we had hot water that evening. The installation was very well-done; tidy and professional. He took the time to show me how the digital readout works on the unit and we verified the performance of the unit together. There will be some getting used to how it works (outlet water temperature declines from 120deg [normal] to 98deg at 4.5 gpm when multiple large taps are running) but we expect this adjustment period won't be long. We've already verified (unintentionally!) that it can support two showers going at the same time. Takes some fiddling with the hot and cold faucets to reestablish a comfortable temperature when the other person starts their shower, but after that it's fine and the temperautre stays constant. Starting out this unfortunate adventure as a doubter of all the hoopla surrounding tankless heaters, I am now convinced they do work and have merit. If there had a been a 2X or 3X price premium for tankless I would have stayed with a tank-style heater. In our case it was a very modest additional cost.

This was a contractor of Home Depot. I had just had an inspector come out and he said nothing about needing new venting. Chris from this company was very adament on my home needing new venting. He would not do the water heater with the type of venting that I have. The total cost for this was very pricey overall. Two other companies that I had gotten estimates from said the venting was just fine.

Thank you for your review. I don't know what other companies you received bids from but based on mechanical standards, the maximum BTU's for your connector vent for your setup are 30,000 BTU's but the water heater you were purchasing was 40,000 BTUs. In addition, your water heater was common vented with your furnace and based on your setup, the maximum BTUs for the common vent was 126,000 BTUs but your furnace and water heater are giving off a total of 154,000 BTUs. We understand that replacing your vent is expensive and we are sorry about the cost. However, based on the mechanical tables, your vent is in fact undersized on several counts. Water heaters vent CO (carbon monoxide) and approximately 10,000 people die each year from carbon monoxide poisoning from improperly vented water heaters and furnaces. I don't know if your other contractors check the mechanical tables as a regular part of their installations - many contractors and plumbers do not. But, based on your setup, and the BTUs being vented vs. the BTU's your vent is rated for - we fully support the technician in insisting that you do the vent work. We recommend that at a minimum given you have decided to not deal with the vent that you install CO meters in your house. Thanks for your review regardless. From our point of view we would do the same thing again in this situation.

The technician, Chris, arrived on time and presented me with a lot of options about modifications and related add-ons that could/should be done, but didn't pressure me into doing any of them. He simply stated which ones were required by code and which were nice-to-haves. He performed the install fairly quickly, though he had to make some modifications to the exhaust venting shared with the furnace to accommodate the new water heater. He hauled away the old water heater and was gone in just a couple of hours. I was completely satisfied with the work and the experience. However, two and a half months later we noticed water damage to the ceiling of the closet in the bedroom directly above the water heater and furnace. We hired a handyman to come look at the problem, assuming it was a leaky roof. But he discovered that the exhaust vent - the one Chris had to modify - running from the water heater in the garage up through the wall of the closet, into the attic and out through the roof had become disconnected about halfway up. It was pumping heat into the attic which was then mixing with the cold air, condensing on the underside of the roof, dripping down onto the insulation and soaking it. Mold had also formed. It became clear that Chris had mistakenly pulled the vent free from its joint while making his adjustments, was unable to reconnect it and simply left it. The handyman fixed the vent and repaired the damage. I called FWH and was told that I needed to speak with the field manager and they'd have him call me. Several days later, after not hearing from him I called and had to leave a message. Several days after that, I called again and finally spoke to Steve, the field manager. He asked that I email him pictures taken by the handyman showing what had caused the problem. I did and had to follow with a phone call a couple of days later. Steve finally looked at the pictures and realizing that his technician had been at fault, immediately assumed responsibility, apologized and asked me to send over the handyman's invoice. Three days later I had a check in hand. So despite the unfortunate experience of having to deal with the vent problem and the several calls that went unreturned, ultimately I was very impressed by FWH's responsiveness and willingness to make the situation right once they discovered they were at fault. Because they did the right thing, in my mind it made up for the error in the first place.

Gordon was our technician. He arrived ahead of schedule, and was very friendly and professional. He worked for about 13 hours to install the new hot water heater, as well as running water and gas lines to accommodate the new water heater. He even lined up the gas line so that it was in the right place to lead up to the spot where our new furnace would be. At about hour 11, our area had power outage. He kept working with just his headlamp until the project was done. We hired this company because they did a great job for friends of ours installing their tankless hot water heater and are just as pleased with the results. We woud definitely hire this company again (even though we hope to not need another new hot water heater any time soon!)

Dennis arrived on time and looked over the installation area. The gas piping and ventilation was more extensive than their over the phone estimate was but the cost was reasonable. This kind of replacement involves water lines in and out, overflow line, condensate line, air inlet, air outlet, gas line, and electrical connection. The job took 5 hours, which is what Dennis said at the start. A good professional installation. There are significant rebates and a tax credit available for this type of conversion resulting in a net cost of about $1000.

On the first visit Adam provided an estimate to replace the water heater and because we told him about the leak in the pipe carrying water into the tank, he replaced it at no charge. We decided to buy from Fast because of the professional and organized method in which he did his estimate. The price was within range of the other prices we received for the job. He showed up promptly to do the job, had all the parts he needed and quickly did the replacement. He cleaned very thoroughly after leaving the area as clean as before he started.

The guy was trying to sell me everything off of his truck and so his estimate was completely inflated. It was $600 more than any other estimate I got. He was really unprofessional and rude. He was asking me how much we were selling our house for. When I paused because I couldn't believe he was asking the question he acted how I couldn't understand English. He talked extremely slow and used small words. It is a pretty big company. His name was Kirk. He told me that my pipes needed to be enlarged and they didn't. He said that the vent pipe had to be 6 inches and it was only 4 and that it wouldn't meet code. All the other estimates said it was fine and the city inspector said that it only had to be 3 1/2. I had no idea why the guy was trying to sell me a 6-inch pipe. Everything was more expensive and he was trying to make money off the permit. He said it was going to cost about double. Another place I went was not going to try to make money off the permit. He was trying to up charge everything. He lied to me about what I needed. He said that I needed repiping and it only needed a strap added to the tank. I wouldn?t even get another estimate from him.

We originally were quoted $999 for basic installation and the tank. My previous tank was a 40 gal short tank. We were going to replace it with a 50 gal short tank but he had the 50 tall energy star for the same price on his truck so he gave us that one for the same price explaining that shorter tanks cost more. But what we did not count on was the extra costs to get it up to code which was earthquake straps $79, drain from drip pan $32, expansion tank $179,sediment trap $32, 4 " connector vent $179,male adapter $32. So it went from $999 to $1685.21 with tax. Needless to say that was not what we were expecting. But besides that the installer Brendan explained everything to me and why it was needed he was very knowledgeable and at one point my eyes glazed over while he was explaining because he lost me at some point! But he did what appears to be an outstanding job, our old tank was short so a lot of changes had to be made to accomodate the new taller tank. He was efficient and and did not dwadle. I would recommend them, felt the price was a bit exsessive but other then that quality work.

Response from Fast Water Heater Company
Thank you for posting a review! We are glad you are overall happy with the work and the installation. With regards to concerns about price - we try to make it clear we do not know what the total will be until we get to your home. The driver of this is the fact that we currently apply for 100% of permits in Washington when they are legally required. As a result, we are forced to bring up installations to be fully compiant with the current plumbing code. Your water heater's additional cost was primarily driven by two things: 1) You needed an expansion tank 2) Your vent was undersized Expansion tank: Expansion tanks are required in WA anytime you have a closed system. The expansion tank is a pressurized tank that prevents pressure build up due to thermal expansion. Because your system is "closed" - when you heat your water and it expands, it cannot flow back out to your water main. This can cause severe fluctuations in pressure which can cause your water heater to fail prematurely. It can also damage all of your other appliances. By putting on an expansion tank - it prevents this problem. Venting: Your venting was sized for a water heater with 34k BTUs. The water heater we installed was 40k BTUs. It's important to upsize this when the venting is inadequate. Your water heater vents CO (carbon monoxide). To prevent CO from spilling into the home/garage, we need to make sure it's vented properly. In your case, you needed 4 inch (you had 3 inch) vent. We thank you for your business and appreciate you taking the time to write a review. If you have any concerns about the work done, don't hesitate to give us a call and ask for Mike, the sales manager.
