George was always very helpful and responsive. He helped us get a great price on the hardwood. We are very happy with the end quality of the materials and the installation, however, had some major issues with the installation of our vinyl flooring in one of the bathrooms. The installer broke a pipe inside the wall when re-installing the toilet. Water gushed everywhere and ended up getting under much of the newly installed vinyl, damaging the dry wall and soaking the insulation in the crawl space underneath. We ended up having $11,000 in repairs and had to rip out all the newly installed vinyl. Thankfully, we have good home insurance and they covered everything except for the deductible. I gave a "B" because overall we are happy with the end product now that everything is fixed. I would give the vinyl installer a D or F since it has created a huge hassle and additional expenses for us. It should be standard protocol for them to make sure the water to the house is turned off before removing toilets or other plumbing.

I am so sorry that you have had to deal with this issue. I have decided to no longer use or refer the installation company that caused this problem. Not because I believe mistakes don't ever happen, but because I believe the contractor should have covered the damage out of pocket or on his own insurance immediately. Leaving it to you and your home owners insurance was unacceptable in my view. I'm glad that it was covered by your insurance and I will cover any deductible you are left with as I would never be satisfied with you having any out of pocket costs. I'm happy to hear that the flooring is complete and beautiful so at least we have that. Please accept my apology. Andy

Not well. As described above, they came for the consult and after a lot of back and forth, I still have not received an estimate. Waste of $50.
Description of Work: We paid $50 for a flooring consult and estimate. Someone came to do the consult, and despite 4 different attempts and back and forth, after more than 2 months, we still don't have an estimate. Just not very professional. I can't speak to their work, but disappointed in the service.

Are you referring to the estimate sent to you on July 13th at 2:11 PM? Thanks, Andy
My experience with Andy's 5 Star Flooring was excellent. Their installers are professional, friendly and very helpful and knowledgeable. When hardwood ceased to be an option, they were able to install new carpet in a single day. I have some mobility issues so they also moved all the furniture around. Basically, they did everything quickly, efficiently, and I am very happy with my new carpet.
Description of Work: This was a hardwood floor installation that unfortunately never happened because of problems with the condo association. Throughout all of these problems this provider was patient, professional and extremely helpful with every aspect of the project. When the hardwood option fell apart, they were equally helpful installing new carpet.

I'm sorry my salesman didn't communicate clearly with you. He searched multiple avenues to find your discontinued vinyl plank for the room you wanted and had no success. He also looked through other suppliers for alternatives but didn't think he found anything close enough for what you wanted. As the trail got cold he should have called you with his findings and didn't. I've had a good discussion with him about the importance of letting our customers know when we can't meet their needs. I hope someone found you a vinyl plank that is satisfactory to you. Thanks, Andy

as promised, delivered on time. installation done ok, but lots of little "cut corners" where carpet was not fitting into a corner as the size was too small, so a piece was cut off from another section, and glued into place. granted, these are in places behind doors or next to desks, but i can see them. now more than a year later, the carpets have not been "bullet proof" but rather prone to tracking and pet staining. lots of little fibers escaping from join points at the baseboard. they seem to clean up ok, but stains return, even though i used their recommended cleaners and very expensive pet proof padding. overall, i am not particularly happy with either the quality of carpet recommended for my price range, and the installation is ok, but not fabulous. i'd love to have follow up from 5 Star. thank you.
Description of Work: installed new carpet and waterproof padding in four bedrooms, a family room and an office of my house.. andy, the salesperson was a very amenable guy, very helpful and recommended carpets which fitted the budget, but he's not available for follow up now that i want to show off the carpet and installation a year later. (dates and costs are approximate as i don't remember exact dates/costs)

Hi Member, I'm surprised to hear from you this way. If you need some help my cell number is 206-948-7131. I will be happy to come out and see what the issues are if you ask but I think we probably need an inspector from Godfrey Hirst to check if there is some problem with the carpets performance. I still think the more expensive Stainmaster nylon carpet you were considering would have been a more long term performer but I think the P.E.T. carpet you bought should be making it the few years you need before selling your home. It's got a low tight construction and should clean up from stains well. P.E.T. carpets don't do as well with abrasion and soiling but not carpeting the hall and stairs should have made that a manageable condition. Let's set up an inspection from the mill and see what they say. There are a number of speculations I could make about possible problems that would point to manufacturing errors but let's let them way in now that the carpet has been cleaned and is still not performing how you want. Thanks, Andy 206-948-7131 P.S. I've been wearing many hats the last two weeks so if you don't get me on the first try leave a message and/or try again. Thanks

I contacted Andy's 5 Star because of the reviews here on Angie's List. I made an appointment with a gentleman who arrived about ten minutes late, which was no big deal. He said that he was late because he left without his notepad that had our address on it. A red flag, but hey, who hasn't left for a client meeting without the necessary equipment. He didn't have a scrap of paper on him, so we gave him some. He proceeded to spend a whole bunch of time being very friendly and telling all sorts of stories about his nephews, life, etc, but I really just wanted to focus on flooring. He was at the house for quite a while. It was a Friday, he said he'd have the quote to us by Monday. On Tuesday he called and seemed to have very little recollection of what we had actually discussed while at our house. He also said he looked everywhere but couldn't find the piece of paper (which we'd given him because he left without his pad) on which he'd taken his notes from his visit. Something about a window open in his truck and papers flying everywhere. He asked for a reminder of what we'd talked about. I reminded. He said he'd be emailing us the quote. It's a week later and I've heard nothing. It was a pretty disappointing experience and I wish he hadn't wasted our time. We were ready to get going with flooring and now we have to start over with another company.
Description of Work: Came out to the house and took measurements, brought samples, never followed up.

( members name removed), I'm so sorry, I just checked in the computer and the estimate is there. I'm curious if it ended up in a spam folder or maybe was not sent. No matter how you look at this it's a failure and I for one am not happy. I can't stand that we let you down and lost the opportunity to complete your flooring. Everything connected with this project was excellent. Dave responded quickly to my request for an estimate, bought samples, measured, and sent me his estimate the next day. As soon as I accepted his estimate, they ordered the hardwood (solid strand carbonized bamboo). In about 2 1/2 weeks it had arrived and the installer, Keegan Johnson, delivered it , then came with his helper and installed it the next day. The two of them did a beautiful job, the floor looks gorgeous, they cleaned up and left everything spotless and I could not have been more pleased.

The carpets in our home were fairly new when we first moved in a couple of years ago. But with three animals in the house, it became harder and harder to keep them clean. My wife and I did some research and decided to visit Five Star Flooring's Ballard showroom, Seattle Style Flooring. We talked with Scott about our situation and what kind of flooring would be best for us. He also walked us through the installation process and agreed to send us a rough estimate based on the square footage of our home (975 sq ft) and the type of flooring (laminate) we liked at the showroom. It took a few days longer than expected to receive the estimate, but the estimate ended up being quite reasonable. We talked with Scott after receiving the quote to have some additional questions answer before moving forward with the project. One of our primary concerns was how to handle our two indoor cats, one of which has asthma, during the carpet tear out and laminate installation. Scott was very accommodating and assured us that the installation could be done in stages so that we could move the cats and furniture around the house as each room was completed. With our concerns addressed, we decided to hire Five Star Flooring to do the job. The project was supposed to start on a Thursday. There was some miscommunication about exactly what time the installers would begin. We were under the impression that work would start that morning, but the installers had another job that morning and couldn't start on our floors until the afternoon. The installers, Harry and his son, got to our home a little after noon that Thursday and got to work in the living room with the carpet tear out. Apparently our sub-floors were in pretty bad shape and required a lot of leveling in order to put the flooring down. This ended up being a problem throughout most of the house and Harry had to lay down multiple layers of leveling concrete over the majority of the floor in the living room and two of the three bedrooms. Harry and his son were originally only scheduled to work Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Monday morning if there was any finishing up left to do, but the sub-floors were so bad that they ended up working all day both Sunday and Monday in order to get everything done. All told, they spent between 20-25 hours just preparing the sub-floors to lay down the laminate. I can't say enough positive things about the work Harry and his son did. They were both extremely professional and took the time and effort to ensure the flooring was installed correctly and was level throughout our home. Despite our sub-floors being in such shoddy condition, they did a fantastic job and the laminate flooring looks wonderful. Some of our baseboards weren't completely fastened to the wall and they even nailed them back onto the wall and sealed them. They also cleaned up very well after they finished working each day. Since the original estimate only included a $100 charge for floor prep, we ended up paying quite a bit more than we had anticipated thanks to the sub-floor issues, but there was no way to foresee that until the carpets were up and out of the house. Even with the extra cost added in, we still feel we paid a fair price given the amount of work that had to be done and how great the floors look now. Aside from a couple of communication issues early on, our experience with 5 Star Flooring was very good and we'd certainly recommend them!

Very courteous when we went to the store to pick out carpet. Shared pros and cons of different carpet types and allowed us to take home samples to see how the different carpet colors looked in our house with our newly painted walls. Extremely flexible and nice as we continued to add on rooms. We were originally only going to carpet 3 rooms and ended up doing most of the house. They rearranged their schedule to provide for the ordering and delivery of new carpet and changed their installation dates to meet our needs. The installers, Alberto and Manuel , were extremely professional and courteous and knew what they were doing. Hard to find any seams even though we know there must be some somewhere. Would definitely use them again.

All went fine, given the usual adjustments and decisions that need to be made in any large project of this nature. I feel we were kept informed when we had to make a change order, and were not asked to make any unreasonable changes to our plans or costs.
Description of Work: This was the last phase in a large pre-retirement house refresh. Roof, windows, interior paint, flooring. We wanted flooring replaced for the living room, kitchen, hallway, master bedroom, entrance stairway, and two landings. George came out and did an estimate for us (which caused a bit of unintentional comedy - we received two estimates that we close together and assumed they were alternate versions - but it turns out one was materials and one was labor). We decided to move forward an visited their Bothell showroom to officially select our laminate and carpet (only for the stairways). 5-Star was very flexible about scheduling, and since we were under no time pressure, we scheduled it for when everyone was available. Keegan was our installer - I was a bit surprised there was only a one-man crew - but did a great job. Kept us informed about what was happening and what was going to happen, as well as any options we needed to make a decision on. As it happens, the installer's vacation fell right into our installation window, but as I said we were under no time pressure and I did not want to affect someone's vacation. It all worked out. The laminate looks great, the carpet looks great, and all was done to our complete satisfaction. I would recommend this vendor to anyone looking to replace their floor coverings. We knew this was going to produce the biggest change of all the refurbishment we were doing - they were replacing 30 year old original carpet after all - and we were right. Not cheap, but I feel it was fair. Sorry it took me so long to get the review posted!

Thanks to all the previous reviewers for helping me chose the right company to do my job We visited the showroom of Seattle Style flooring in Ballard which is a sister company of 4 Star Flooring for our basement hardwood project. Scott was great at explaining the +s and -s of each type of flooring for a basement. We decided to go with the 10mm Laminate. During the measurement, Scott and the Installer pointed out limitations so I knew upfront on what it would look/feel like. Harry Completed the job in 2 days in Record time and it is Perfect. I am so glad I went went Seattle Style flooring/Andy's 5 star based on Angies list. Plus - Thorough explanation of options which will best work for the project - Accurate Estimate including prep work during measurement - Perfect Installation job by Harry S in record time Minus - None Highly recommend 5 Star Flooring & Seattle Style flooring for Wood floor jobs

I purchased this Angie's List deal on May 7 (The deal was $40.00 to get an in-home consultation, including full measurements, recommendations, and estimate, then review color schemes and different flooring options. What attracted me most to the offer was that it included reimbursement of the $40.00 and an additional $50 off every $1000 you spend if you hired the service provider to perform the work). The day of my purchase, George of 5 Star Flooring was in-touch with me. Upon going over my situation, he referred his go-to installer (Joel Strep Flooring) since I didn't need help with the whole measurement, recommendation, design, and consultation aspect of the project--I was just looking for a good, experienced installer to handle the job of putting in my Coretec Plus Luxury Vinyl Plank. In the end, I was fortunate to have been treated so well and put in touch with 5 Star Flooring's installer despite not buying any product from their store. What follows bellow is a recap of the installer's service, but should reflect on the type of service you receive when buying and installing flooring through 5 Star Flooring. Joel of Joel Strep Flooring sent James to visit my place on May 11 and go over the scope of the project: A) install 1/4" plywood underlayment, B) glue down 744 sq. ft. of locking luxury vinyl plank, and C) finish with a 6" baseboard trim and craftsman-style door casing for 6 doorways. The estimate came in at $3,671.54 after tax. This was in-line with the $4 sq. ft. install quote I received and turned down from the retailer where I bought the flooring, since the job would also include all this trim work in addition to just installing the flooring. I liked the treatment I had received thus far (prompt visit to provide quote; timely email correspondence), so I went with their estimate. Work started on Monday, May 18, and wrapped on Thursday, May 21. The one-man team of Jose did everything. The install of the underlayment, flooring and baseboards/door casings was done with as much care as I would've attempted, had I been qualified to try it myself. The only disappointment I had was discovering a spill of something out on the deck attached to the kitchen, that had dripped down to the concrete driveway below. I am pretty sure that this wasn't here before, so if it was in fact his mistake, I would've liked to have been told about it. Since the spill was over a deck that needed to be refinished later and concrete that will eventually be cleaned, though, I was in a forgiving mood. The other very minor thing was noticing a few places where walls and painted surfaces had been scratched when the trim was installed. Clean-up was otherwise very meticulous and impressive. In the end, Joel took off $200 from his original quote, which gave me the 'fine print' of the Angie's List Deal. Overall, I was very pleased working with 5 Star Flooring and Joel Strep Floors.
Description of Work: *Referred me to their go-to installer, Joel Strep Flooring *Made sure to honor my Angie's List 'Deal', despite the fact that Angie's List worded it wrong

They will make it right eventually, but when things went wrong I felt like all communication had to be prompted by me and professionalism/customer service was lacking. I contacted 5 Star Flooring based on reviews here and scheduled an appointment for them to measure where carpet needed to be replaced and to review samples and select new carpet. Dave showed up promptly on 4/8/2015, showed me samples and discussed the benefits of different options and carpet pads. The price was in line with exceptions and I placed an order. I received two written estimates the same day (one for the carpet and one for the installation) in line with Dave's explanation that I would be charged for half of the job up front, and the second half when completed (and that I would pay the installers seperately and the day of the work. The carpet was ordered and the install arranged for 4/21. The day before I had to request confirmation as there was no follow up. I arranged to be off work and found a place to take my cat, packed up my top floor and was ready for the installers. The installers showed up a bit late, but nothing horrible and got to work and I moved off site. I was told the job would be a half day job, wrapping at 3:00 but most likely before. While the work was in progress I received the second invoice from 5 store flooring, which didn't show the down payment already made. I was charged for the second half of the carpet that afternoon before the work was completed. At 2:50 I received a call from the installers asking if Dave had contacted me. He had not. Apparently there was not enough carpet to finish the job. They didn't have enough carpet for my two upstairs closets. I returned home to see what had been done and left undone. Neither the installers of 5 Star Flooring owned up to where the error occurred. But more carpet needed to be ordered before the job was complete. I had to pay the installers in full though I was assured there would be no additional charge. 5 star also had charged me in full before the job was complete, which was not what we discussed. I would have been more comfortable through out the process if they had waited for a final charge once they had fully met their obligations. Dave called and said they would order more carpet and be out the next week to complete the job. After everyone had left I looked more closely at the state of my townhouse. Corners of the carpet on my stairs were messy with fibers ripped and one section even had a hole. One of my closet doors was not replaced properly and fell off the railings and two of my closet doors had two inch gauges in them. There were pads down in the closet, but with exposed carpet staples. I took pictures on my phone and texted Dave at All star. I also expressed that I was frustrated that I had been charged in full for an incomplete job. Dave assured me all would be taken care of when the installer returned and that he would also come by to make sure things were done right. From this point on I never received anything in writing from 5 Star flooring and all communication had to be initiated by me. I had to call on the status of the carpet order, and actually had to wait a full two weeks (with a closet doors off the hinges and unable to unpack boxes of items normally kept in the closets before the job could be "completed." I needed to arrange second day off work for the carpets for the closets to be installed The installer showed up on time, but Dave who had the carpet showed up 45 minutes later). The installer (Raul) did look at and agree with my concerns with the sloppy install and corrected all areas in the carpet before Dave actually arrived. Raul was very apologetic and thorough in the corrections and I am happy with the final results there. They looked at the scratches on my closet door, were not prepared to fix them (and again, like with the misorder, no one owned the mistake). They said they would need to arrange for someone to repair them and wanted to take my doors with them. I was not comfortable with this (especially with no written agreement and having already paid in full at this point). They said they would make arrangements with a contractor to do the repairs. I received nothing in writing. The carpenter was arranged more than a week later on 5/14. I needed to take yet another day off work to be available. On 5/13 Raul called and said the carpenter wanted to take my doors with him. I said that was unacceptable and again felt uncomfortable. Victor the carpenter showed up on time and fixed my doors again to my satisfaction. Everything worked out in the end, but a one day install left me with an incomplete job for almost a full month and I had to take two additional days of work for the work to be completed. I should not have been charged in full until the work was done in full and 5 Star should have owned the mistake, and sent me information in writing with the next steps proactively. I felt like I had to keep reaching out to confirm corrections would be made. Even when I reached out in writing I would get a response by text or phone.
Description of Work: Carpet selection, estimate, delivery and arranged install. Eventually the corrected sloppy areas of the install and damage to my closet doors.

I'm so sorry that we let you down. It is very uncommon for our installations to involve damage that needs repair. I'm glad that the repairs were made to your satisfaction and wish we had been better at communicating with you. Please let me know if there is anything I can do for you at this point. I'm glad that my guys understand that we don't charge for our measure errors and provided the extra carpet pad and install for free but not being kept up to speed on the process is unacceptable. We used Andy's 5-Star flooring to bid on carpet installation in our home. Although we did not end up selecting them finally it was a pleasure to work with Dave Trainor throughout the bid/quote process. He was courteous, professional, punctual and patient about answering all our questions. For the kind of carpet we finally decided on, they were not able to give us the best price, and that is the only reason we went with another installer. Would definitely recommend 5-Star flooring to anyone who is considering carpet installation.

I wish every company/contractor we work with perform like eric and the 5 star flooring team. we were having a small nook added to our 1st floor and were redoing carpeting upstairs (stairs on up). we must have looked at around 5-8 carpet companies and are so so glad we ended up selecting eric. the staff is knowledgeable and professional without being at all pushy. they dealt with us very patiently as we tried to find our way across carpet and pad options. We even changed the color of the final carpet after we had placed the order but eric took it all in stride. Since the carpet was coming in after our construction work (which kept on getting pushed out), we had to move our carpet installation date multiple times and eric handled it very well. The carpet installers (yvone and crew) showed up right on time and were done earlier than they promised. they moved the furniture and put it back as if it was nothing. They were extremely knowledgable and give us lots of good tips on carpet care and vacuums to use. all in all, it was an amazing experience (wish there was something even higher than A) and we have already recommended eric and 5 star flooring to my brother and couple of our friends. For anyone getting any flooring work done, I would suggest at least giving these guys a call. I believe they would end up winning your job. As a side bonus, they also offer lifetime warranty on their installation work.

Thanks for recognizing Eric's great work. He always keeps his focus on what's best for his customer. Not everyone recognizes the difference that strong empathy creates and that is our driving force here. Our philosophy is what is best for the customer is best for us. Sometimes we lose jobs because we wont over sell anything but we can live with that. Once again thank you for saying such nice things about Eric. Andy
We had a budget to prepare our home for sale and wanted to replace our old carpeting with an attractive, good quality carpet and pad. Dave at 5 Star Flooring steered us in the right direction with product suggestions in our target price range. (He even had a great reference for us to refinish our hardwood floors.) Eric, the sales rep, came out to the house to take measurements and planned the carpet installation in such a way as to minimize the amount of carpet needed, resulting in additional savings. He followed up with us to schedule installation. The installation was first rate and Ivan and his crew were punctual, hard- working, energetic and very efficient. They were done in a matter of hours! Throughout the process, and now that installation is complete, we are convinced that we found the right company for our needs. Our thanks to all involved and we highly recommend 5 Star Flooring. We now know why they are rated so highly on Angie?s List.

They were friendly and professional. They had made calculations for less boxes. They gave me another bag but didn't charge for it. They were responsible.

It's not always noticed but we are extremely picky about the installers we allow to do our installations. It's no big secret. There is no gimmick program that causes this it's just being conscientious and understanding what we do. We don't market very well we just get the job done and hope people talk about it. Thank you for doing that, Andy

Dave was very helpful with suggestions when we first began looking for carpet. They came out and took complete measurements of the house and followed up with their estimate promptly. When we had a conflict with the original scheduled installation date they were very accomadating about changing the dates. The installers were on time and worked continuously with just a break for lunch. They answered all questions that we had. The installation took two full days and they hauled away all the trash when the job was finished.
Description of Work: Removed old carpeting, padding, and wall base in the entire house. They also moved the furniture as required. New padding, carpeting and wall base were installed and furniture returned to original positions.

This is a decent company. Their bid was $3/sqyd higher than the other company but I chose this company because the sales person seemed to be honest and trustworthy. They have separate billing for the installers, which indicates the company is only selling material. The installers were absolutely great. They worked really hard to get the installation done within the day and installation looks great. They seemed to be really good at what they are doing. On the next business day, Dave ( the sales company) called me to make sure everything was all right. I told him one small problem due to miscommunication. He scheduled to another appointment to resolve the problem. It was resolved very quickly. I thought I was glad that I picked this company even though it was a little bit more expensive than the other. Quality and Customer service of this company is great. Highly recommend this company.

Eric was our rep and he was great to work with, even if we were a bit neurotic on confirming details with him -- he was very patient and professional. We had to move the start of the install back by half a day due to a delay at the prior install, but they came and finished as much as they could do in half a day. We had scheduled two days just in case so it worked out. The vinyl in the bathroom was done first and it looks fantastic. It was a bit more involved in getting the subfloor installed but Ivan (installer) managed to get it done right. They also tore out most of the carpet upstairs to get ready for new carpet the next day. Ivan and crew showed up on time the next morning and started work right away. They were working through lunch so we got them a bite to eat. Ivan and his crew were very hard working and considerate that we were in the house at the time. They were done by around 4 or 5 that day and the carpet is awesome. As far as we can tell, the install was solid. We would definitely give 5-Star a call again for future projects.

It went well, he brought many samples which we talked through as I narrowed it down to 3 choices, he then got on his cell phone to determine if any or all were available immediately. I made the final decision and the order was placed that day. Timing is everything. Thanks.
Description of Work: Eric came out with samples and a tape measure to get me a fast quote so I could get the carpet installed during my 2 week vacation from work.

I'm glad to hear everything went well. Eric works hard to make sure everyone gets what they are looking for whether it be price, quick install, quality or all of the above. He's definitely a blessing to have on our team. Thanks again for your kind words, Andy
Wood Floor installation: D Carpet installation: A Our overall satisfaction while excellent with the carpet, has been tainted a bit by the overall quality and result of the wood flooring that we felt that we had to give this review a D grade. The first contact with Andy was great. He came out and took measurements, and gave us a lot of options for carpet and hardwood floors. Response time was quick and Andy was very friendly. After receiving several quotes, we found that Andy's was the most competitive and we decided to move forward with the project. We scheduled install dates and then tackled the demolition of the old flooring ourselves. The wood flooring was the first to go in and we found that this is where the problems started. The contractor doing the work, Chris, delivered the wood ahead of the install date for it to start to acclimatize to the house. We found however in talking to Chris that not enough material was ordered. This was after both Andy and Chris had taken measurements. Chris was confident that there wasn't enough material, and mentioned this to Andy and from what I gathered, the direction was to stretch what was there as much as possible (in the end another box was ordered to make up for the short fall anyway). Chris got to work the following Monday, and it seemed that everything was going well. The flooring was going in and looked good. Everything progressed at a relatively reasonable pace. Near the end of the job however there was some contention over the transition strips that would be used between the new wood floors and areas with linoleum (a bathroom and a laundry room). We had been VERY specific previously that the transition strips needed to be wood and not metal. Chris was prepared to install metal strips, and when we called this out, there seemed to be some back and forth between him and Andy about it, and basically who's responsibility it was. It appears that they were never ordered or included in the quote. The floors stayed in a 99% complete state for about a week while this was ordered and sent with the carpet installers, before Chris could come back and install. This did not increase the cost of the job for us, but it was annoying to realize that our requests weren't really addressed initially and the correct amount and type of materials ordered. While we waited for this, we started to clean up the new wood floors and found other things that, in our mind weren't right based on the amount of money we spent for the material and install. Nails were still exposed in the boards in many places, and not covered with wood filler, gaps between some boards were enough that you could see the subfloor through them in places and the stairs SQUEAK like nobody's business. The fit and finish of the job was not anything close to what I'd have called complete or professional. We as the home owners are having to go back and do much of the fit and finish work that we feel should have been done by the installer. We made the mistake of trusting and paying before the job was complete to our satisfaction (never again) and believe that once the money was turned over, the job turned into something rushed and unimportant. The main issue that we have though is that the stairs are VERY LOUD and SQUEAK enough that it wakes up our infant son. We asked about this and Chris came back out, and tried a few things, but nothing worked. He talked to Andy (from what we gathered from a one sided conversation) and the end result was basically "Stairs are just going to be loud and squeak a lot, there's nothing that can be done". Chris made mention that perhaps the best materials weren't used on the stairs and that engineered wood planks vs single pieces of wood wasn't the way to go. This was never discussed with us previously, and if there was extra cost we would have paid it to ensure a proper job. I do not know enough about wood flooring to comment on if this is accurate however. We asked Chris to put some more nails in the most problematic areas, and instead appears to have gone to town on the trim bordering the stairs on one of the flights. This is NOT what we asked for. Further there was no attempt to detail the work and hide the nail marks, just a very quick "slam the nails in an be done" type of job. We think that we've identified the major issues with the squeaking, and it's because of the stair nose on boards on 1 side on several steps move when pressure is applied to them (e.g. stepping on them....). We've since gone out and bought our own nail gun and will attempt to fix these issues ourselves, which is something as a consumer I don't feel we should have to do on an install that is less than 2 months old. Overall with the wood floors the following is how we feel at the end of this project: Fit and finish are basically non existent in most of the installed areas of the floor The stairs squeak and creak at an unacceptable level Requests for proper transition strips was either ignored or not heard (even after being very clear on the subject) Not happy with the type of transition strips used (large and bulky, seems like there should be a sleeker option, though I don't know) Unnecessary damage (nails) to trim when we asked that stair nose and boards be nailed down better, not trim After the wood flooring was installed, carpet was laid in the bedrooms. The material was ordered correctly and the installer was prompt, courteous and quick. Ivan and his crew did a very good job and no seams or other issues were visible when done. He even recommended a very nice thin transition strip for the area leading from the Master Bedroom to the Master Bathroom that we are very pleased with the result. Overall with price and carpet installation we're happy with our service, but the wood flooring and it's current issues leave something to be desired. Based on that install alone we don't believe that we'd do business again with 5 Star or the installer. We will be replacing the carpet in our living room late next year and will use the same material as the bedrooms, but we will likely look for another place to purchase it.

I’m sorry you are unhappy with the stairs. I would like to make them right for you and I’ve already contacted Chris to let him know. We had already discussed our next step if his fix didn’t work out, but when we didn’t hear back from you we figured it must have calmed down as many times it does. I told Chris again that I am willing to provide whatever materials are needed and he responded that he would be willing to do whatever it takes to make it right. There is a possibility we will have to remove a tread or two and redo them as the stair nose seems to have released from the glue (based on your witnessing movement in the nose). This is also why he nailed the skirt board. The tread if able to move rubs against the skirt board (Trim) and nailing the skirt board many times will create just enough gap to stop the squeaking, obviously in your case that remedy didn’t work. I prefer fixing issues with less invasive procedures when possible. When that fails I dig in and make it right. In reference to the transition piece the manufacturer only makes one matching T-molding. I was hoping to find an alternative but nothing matched up right and I forgot to order the matching transition. That’s a poor excuse but it’s my fault. In reference to the one piece stair tread option. If you remember I did mention that I prefer that method of doing stairs but it was not an option if you wanted a complete match. The wood on your main floor is a pre-finished hand scraped stained engineered wood floor and it is only available with the options they provide. If we had done single piece stair treads it wouldn’t match very well. That’s why we immediately moved on from that option. You said you wanted to have it all match and so we went that way. In reference to the shortage, I would love to lay the blame elsewhere but it was only me that miscalculated the waste needed to run the halls crosswise. When Chris called me I was surprised as I’m not accustomed to being short of material, so I made him explain his position to me as I looked over my floor plan. I then ordered the extra 2 boxes even though he said 1 might do. I didn’t want to take a chance. I accepted the extra cost as it was my error. *We are more than willing to fix any issues *We will contact you to do so *We appreciate your feed back I never intend to take advantage of my customers, it’s not what I believe in and it never will be. I started this company to be different. I am doing this because of what I believe and the difficulty I had in my past with being instructed to deceive my customers. I believe that being honest and caring about my customers is a formula that will provide a fair living for me and my employees. So far it’s been true. *My promise to my customers: I will always keep your interests in mind while advising you about what to buy, while choosing who to do the work, and while dealing with any issues that come up, regardless of whether I’ve been paid or not.
