They were excellent to work with. They listened to what we wanted to accomplish and offered ideas. We were completely satisfied. We would use them again in future.
Description of Work: BH Contracting Services Inc did our main floor remodel last September. They built a new deck and a new bathroom. The price included the planning, the rebuilt and installation of cabinets and floors.

Their price was very high but they did a good job. They did not use the best material but they charged me as if they did. Another contractor that I hired for a less price did a terrible job.
Description of Work: I used them to remodel my house. They painted my house and installed a new roof, furnace, windows and fireplaces. They gutted and remodeled the kitchen & bathroom. They put some cabinets in the basement. They put in some dry walls as well.

Excellent to work with. Work quality very good. Very persistent to make certain we have good communication. We have what we thought we would have at end of job. Did have to run around more than desired to select pavers.

We have worked with a number of contractors over the years and Brad is the only one we feel comfortable referring on to our family and friends. BH Contracting Services was a pleasure to work with on this project. The craftsmanship and caring Brad and his team put into our home was amazing. The workers were all professional, courteous and well trained in their fields. It truly felt like family members were rebuilding our home for us. When questions arose, Brad and his team answered them quickly and honestly. They completely rebuilt our home from the inside out. The original bid was very close to our end cost. The only price increases were change orders we willingly made. We were always told before a task was started, exactly what it would cost if it was different from the original bid. Brad was very helpful in directing us to more cost effective choices when appropriate. We had a very firm budget to adhere to and Brad made that happen. The estimated date for completion was met. We never thought a home could be transformed like it was in such a short time. Brad delivered what he promised. Every person that came into our home to provide a service was a pleasure to work with. We could not have been happier with the quality of the work that was done. Not only did they all work unbelievably hard, the job site was always clean at the end of a work day. Any time we needed clarification or direction BH was on the ball. The office manager was very helpful. Again, questions were answered very quickly and clearly. All of the subcontractors that were brought onto the project were fantastic. Clearly, much thought and planning is put into subcontractor choices by BH. The quality of the craftsmanship is fantastic. Brad and BH Contracting Services went well above our expectations for a remodel. With their help and well trained talents our house is now a forever home.
Description of Work: The dining room became the new kitchen, a hallway was removed and bathrooms enlarged. Ceilings were vaulted and lined with wood. All exterior windows were replaced and some repositioned. Roof was replaced and skylights and Sola tube were added. Trim throughout interior was replaced. Doors, hardware, plumbing, heating are all new. Hardwood floors were refinished. Carpet was replaced and cork floor was added. Bedroom was removed to make room for walk-in closet. Doorways were added to utilize space. 2800 square foot house feels beautiful functional in each square foot now. Bathrooms were completely remodeled. Quartz counter tops, tile floors and showers were installed. Lighting throughout.

carpet installation
  + -1 more
I was initially looking to remodel my garage and replace the carpet in the stairwell from the garage. Brad from BH Contracting provided an estimate for everything, and then quickly revised the estimate twice when I changed my mind twice about what I wanted. I decided to wait on the remodel and just have the carpet changed. The estimate was more than I would like to have paid, but I decided based on BH Contracting's reputation that it might be worth the price for a little piece of mind. Sure enough, the carpet installation was impeccable. The estimate included an allowance for commercial carpet because I mentioned that it was a high traffic area and I needed something durable. I was directed to go to BH Contracting?s carpet supplier and pick out a carpet, and the place they sent me had a great selection of commercial carpets in my price range. I was very pleased with the carpet I selected ? it looks great! The quality is better than I expected, but exactly what I hoped for. The day of service, the contractors showed up right on time. One of the workers asked if I would like a certain finish to the steps. I didn?t know what it was, but it sounded nice so I said okay. I went to work while the contractors worked on the installation. A few hours later, I received a phone call from Joy with BH Contracting. She let me know that the contractors were not able to finish because they were a little short on carpet. It took about a week to get the carpet in and finish the installation. However, I was blown away when I saw how great the carpet looked even though it wasn?t finished yet. There were only two steps that need to be finished, but those steps were covered and neat. They left the stairwell clean and in great condition even though they weren?t finished yet. When the final pieces of carpet arrived, the contractors came and finished the carpet in almost no time at all. They also didn?t leave a trace behind except a great looking carpet. Overall, I was very pleased with the outcome!
Description of Work: Replaced carpet in winding stairwell with landing.

Based upon their Angies List rating we arranged a meeting time for a consultation and quotation. Brad showed up on time, was very pleasant and promised a quotation within 10 days as he was going on vacation. I sent him an email on August 6th asking if he was going to submit a quote or pass. On August 7th I received an email in which he apologized and said we would have their quote the next morning, the 8th. Today is the 18th and we have yet to receive anything from them.

Prompt, complete and professional bid process. Brad's suggestions for how to design the space to maximize storage and keep costs down were excellent. Work began in a timely manner. Took longer to complete than we expected, but not unreasonable. Some problems did crop up during construction but were promptly addressed. Those doing the work were mostly professional and courteous. There was a time or two when we were expecting work to happen and it didn't. Letting us know would have eased our concerns. There were some issues with the plumbing which we felt were pretty basic, but bringing it to their attention got the problems fixed. Brad also came to see the finished product, inspected it, and is addressing one last concern. We are confident it will be addressed to our satisfaction. Other contractors we have had in the past did not bother with this final inspection. We think it's really important.

I believe this report is filed on the wrong contractor. I have no record of this individual. We return every solo call whether we do the type of work requested or not. I refer clients with work outside our scope of focus to one of our trusted subcontractors. This creates a win-win situation for both the potential client and our subcontractors. Please consider taking this off our reports. Any reasonable, upstanding business would have returned six calls.

The initial price was very reasonable so we elected to add some additional scope that we did not originally think we could afford. Brad's design input was very helpful since we are novice home renovators and helped to make the final result much nicer than we expected. The work started as scheduled and progressed very quickly. Their time estimate (which they nailed) was 2 weeks faster than the other bids. The overall quality of Brad's carpenters was very high. The wood floor, tile and railing subcontractors were fantastic. We had some issues with the plumbing subs and Brad resolved those issues to our satisfaction. At the end, we were blown away by the end result. It was much nicer than we had thought possible. We are difficult people to please and did some nitpicking along the way and these folks were committed to earning our satisfaction. The strengths of BH are great project managment, high quality, standards, above average communication with the homeowner. They clearly value customer sat. BH's bids are very specific which helps you know what you are getting at the outset. The final price exceeded the bid by about 5%, mostly because we changed our minds about some things. It would be wise to specify as much as you can at the bid phase so you can keep as much pricing power (changing your mind midstream tends to run up the bill).
Description of Work: They added a bathroom and two bedrooms to the unfinished portion of our attic (about 3/4 of the top floor). They also redid the atic stairs, tore down an existing (ugly) wall adjacent to the staircase and replaced it with nice railing.

Brad Wilson, the owner, came by and gave us a clear, thorough "Scope of Work" that listed the cost and a detailed breakdown of the entire process. This process included removal and replacement of old insulation in the storage cubbies on the side of the house, disposal of any dead critters and their droppings, and installation of R-30 and R-26 in the appropriate areas of the attic. Colby and Brian did the actual work. They're awfully nice people and they seem to be good at everything they do (they've worked here before too). They showed up on time and worked hard. The place was left spotless (they vacuumed) and they even located a leak in the roof. They did everything as promised and completed the job at $500 below the contract price.
Description of Work: The insulation in my mother's two story house dated back to the 1940's so we hired BH Contracting to bring it up to current standards (we've had success with this company before).

We were very pleased with the service and professionalism of Brad Wilson and his crew. They were there when they promised to be and the work done was of outstanding quality. Brad was accomodating to our needs and added some great ideas to what we were doing. We would definitely use BH Contracting again should the need arise.
Description of Work: The main project was to do the concrete work to enable the conversion of a carport to a garage. BH removed the existing concrete slab, excavated for perimeter footing and poured a concrete footing, stem wall and new slab. In addition, they excavated one side of the house to install a footing drain and downspout drain and dug a trench out to the back yard. They also removed an existing blacktop driveway and spread gravel in its place

After vetting 10 other contractors, BH emerged as the class act that we were looking for to entrust with our project. Brad Wilson's willingness to endure 8(!) revisions to the scope over a period of 7 months as we tuned the project to our budget was indicative of his patience and commitment to service. There's also a sense of integrity and practicality apparent when talking to Brad. On day #1, demolition started with the crew on the roof, dismantling an old brick chimney during the biggest rainstorm of the year. They could have waited a couple of days but their desire to stick to the schedule was apparent from the start. The building inspector required more extensive foundation work than was originally approved so additional excavation was necessary and the side sewer had to be replaced to work with the new footings, all during record rainfall. This used up our contingency sooner than we expected, but since our small family had to pay for temporary housing and a mortgage during the renovation it was reassuring that BH continued to strive for the original completion date. I was impressed by BH's management of subs and dealings with inspectors and our architect. Subs were carefully coordinated and managed for quality by BH's project manager (Don in our case). Every craft had the latitude to suggest and incorporate improvements to the design with full buy-in by us and/or our architect, adding additional value to our project. Items that were missed in the design or not fully considered were caught in time and corrected. It became apparent that the subs had a lot of respect for BH and went the extra mile for them. Everyone worked with us on small details or last minute changes, keeping us aware of any impacts. I was kept well informed through 10 minute stops at the job site nearly every day. When the job was in full swing I would exchange maybe a dozen cell phone calls a day with Don on various details. No waiting for questions to percolate up through the main office, architect, etc. but rapid fire Q&A with our architect brought in when needed resulting in great efficiency. BH does great finish work. They reproduced all of the details that originally won us over when we first bought the house and the kitchen is a shining example of their ability. Areas for improvement? Communication could have been a little better with the office. There were a couple of dropped balls that made a lot of work for us later (mud on the concrete floor and green primer on the walls?!). Minor overall. Our job was a huge financial investment for us and BH was probably not the lowest price to be found. But in terms of value, we think we got pretty close to the best. We were always treated fairly on changes and areas of disagreement were always dealt with fairly and professionally. A project of this size is bound to have its ups and downs but in the end we are very happy with the quality of work and professionalism exhibited by BH.
Description of Work: This was a near tear-down project on a 1914 West Seattle home, a Craftsman-inspired cottage house. While completely modernizing virtually every aspect of the house, it was our desire to maintain the existing street appearance and character of the original construction. The house originally provided 800 sq ft of living space on one floor with an unfinished basement, consisting only of posts on pier blocks and a partial concrete slab. The project consisted of demolishing approx 1/2 of the house, raising and shoring the remaining structure, excavating a full-height daylight basement, pouring a new concrete foundation and floor, and expanding the original footprint to achieve 2200 sq ft of living space on two floors. The new construction included seamlessly tying into the existing structure and installing a new kitchen, dining room, master bedroom, guest bedroom, full bath, office/rec room, and deck. The exterior work included replacing the side sewer line, building a new roof line, framing and insulating new exterior walls, tying into existing cedar shingle siding, building a new cedar plank deck, installing new windows and French doors, creating a faux chimney, and painting. The interior received new framing, electrical service & wiring, plumbing, natural gas lines, a hydronic radiant heating system (in-slab and under-floor), recessed lighting, gas fireplace, engineered hardwood floors, wood staircase, and extensive interior trim to match the original construction. The new kitchen included soapstone counters, semi-custom cabinets, new appliances including gas range and hood, apron-front cast iron sink, plumbing fixtures, and pendant lighting. The new bath included vanity, soaking tub, custom tile surround, plumbing fixtures, and sconce lighting.

Brad (owner) was very responsive throughout the project. He arrived promptly at our appointment to review the project and provided a detailed estimate just a few days later. Brad worked hard to salvage as much of the previous construction as possible in order to save me money. His crew got to work right away after we signed the contract, and finished most of the work within two weeks. The quality of the work was excellent. After the project was finished I found a few items that needed correction, and Brad quickly returned and took care of them (even after I had made final payment). Everyone that I met from BH during the project was courteous and helpful. Overall a great experience working with Brad and BH Contacting Services.
Description of Work: The project was to convert an open carport into an enclosed single car garage, and to replace the existing driveway and front walkway. I hired BH to complete the job after my original contractor backed out part way through. The first contractor had built the walls for the garage, but had not followed building code. BH was very knowledgeable about the building code requirements, was able to follow the construction drawings, and work with City of Bellevue building inspectors. The project involved pouring concrete footings under the existing carport slab floor, rebuilding the walls to meet code requirements, installing two doors and the garage door, drywall of garage interior (for fire code), removal of the old driveway and walkway, and pouring new concrete driveway and walkway with broom finish.

Brad & his team handled the entire process from bare concrete walls in my daylight basement, to completely finished, adding closets, light switches, outlets, His team took the bare walls and made the space livable for me & my family!! This under tight turn-around time constraints and a very low budget!! Of course, I had changes made almost constantly, and the team came through for me every time!! I highly recommend this firm for any possible re-modeling you might want to do.
Description of Work: I had a short time and a very limited budget, and this firm came through for me--a total stranger. They did outstanding work that passed all the city of Seattle's inspections! And on top of that, they followed through on their commitments 100% of the time, both time & materials!! I had them do drywalling, electrical, taping, finishing and painting--everything except the floors, which I had another excellent contractor do. I cannot speak more highly of Brad's team, and all his sub-contractors!!!!!

I have to say, people are floored when I tell them that we had absolutely NO problems with BH Contracting. The extent of our job was enormous and took 5 months, and it probably helped that we didn't live in the house while most of the work was being done, but, still, we love these guys. When Brad Wilson met me to do an estimate, he listened and made suggestions, and then he set up another appointment so that his subcontractors could come in with their bids before he'd give us his full bid. No one else did that. The bid we got from BH was the highest, but we felt so at ease with Brad that we chose them anyway. We have not regretted that decision once. Every one of BH's crew are professional, personable and talented. They were at the job site when they said they would be, on time and ready to roll. The work of the subcontractors is excellent (that said, the original drywall subcontractor flaked on us, so BH brought in another company, Action Drywall, who did an excellent job of finishing up). Brad answered all our questions thoroughly and patiently. If any of the crew had questions, they never hesitated to call me or our architect or our engineer, depending on who could provide the best answer for the question at hand. They didn't just do "whatever" and then make excuses later. We were in constant communication. A friend in another state also did a huge remodel at the same time and had a lot of complaints with her contractor. She made the comment that I must be very "Zen" about things and I told her that any "Zen" I'd acquired during the remodel process came directly from hiring BH Contracting. And in the end, we moved into a solidly built, incredibly beautiful home, and we have Brad Wilson and BH Contracting to thank for that.
Description of Work: We purchased an older home (1929) that needed extensive remodeling and updating. We wanted a shed dormer upstairs, expanding the two existing rooms and adding a full bathroom. The kitchen, downstairs bath and the rest of the main floor needed major updating. Working from architectural plans, BH first gutted the entire house, taking it down to the studs. It ended up being less expensive to just remove the entire second floor and start over, so off that came, too (the roof was shot anyway). BH retrofitted the house and poured footings under the foundations, since there were none and they'd be needed. All brand new electrical and plumbing went in, including a new water main. Two staircases were built, one to the basement and one to the 2nd floor. The 2nd floor is a shed dormer, with two huge new bedrooms and a new full bath. The master bedroom has a balcony so we can take advantage of our new Sound and Olympic views. On the main floor, they remodeled the kitchen and the bathroom and rebuilt the walls and floors for the living, dining and guest rooms. Hardwood floors went throughout the house, except the bathrooms and kitchen. Those rooms are tiled and have under floor heating. Obviously new windows went upstairs, but also all the windows on the main floor were replaced, and all the windows were made to look original (we used wood clad, not vinyl). They shingled the 2nd story of the outside and built us a new front porch. The only thing original to the house now is the basement and the outside walls of the main floor. Everything else was built by BH Contracting.

Brad was very nice to talk to, but I was not impressed when it took a long time for him to respond with the estimate and when it came, I was shocked at the price. We spoke about different possibilities and when I talked with other contractors, they cautioned me against many of the ideas Brad had talked about. It seemed like Brad was happy to support costly concepts, rather than practical ones. Overall, I would be very uncomfortable working with them as I do not trust their integrity.

Response from BH Contracting Services Inc
IT IS OF INTEREST TO US THAT THE MEMBER RATED US A C COMPANY OVER ALL AND GAVE US A B FOR PROFESSIONALISM. THIS IN OUR EYES WOULD CONSTITUTE AN AVERAGE TO BETTER THAN AVERAGE COMPANY. AND YET THE MEMBER HAS CALLED OUR INTEGRITY INTO QUESTION. WE BELIEVE THAT INTEGRITY SHOULD BE WEIGHED ON DOING WHAT WE SAY WE WILL DO. OUR PAST REPORTS SHOW THAT CLIENTS THAT HAVE USED OUR SERVICES HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY SATISFIED WITH THEIR PROJECTS. DURING THE BIDDING PROCESS THERE IS A NATURAL SELECTION OF A GOOD FIT BETWEEN CLIENT AND CONTRACTOR. AS PREVIOUSLY STATED, WE SUPPORT THIS RIGHT OF OUR POTENTIAL CLIENTS AND ACKNOWLEDGE THE SELECTION PROCESS EXISTS. SPECIFICS REGARDING THIS MEMBER’S PROJECT: THE DESIRE WAS TO HAVE THE ROOF TRUSSES REDESIGNED, THE CEILING RAISED, AND SQ FOOTAGE ADDED IN HER RESIDENCE. DOING SUCH WORK ENTAILS HAVING ARCHITECT PLANS, SO THAT AN ACCURATE BID CAN BE CREATED FOR THE PROJECT. THE MEMBER DID NOT HAVE THESE NEEDED PLANS. WE WENT AHEAD AND BID THE PROJECT. IN ORDER TO DO SUCH A BID, THERE ARE A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF UNKNOWNS THAT MUST BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT. WE DO NOT LIKE THIS TYPE OF BIDDING AND TYPICALLY DO NOT DO IT, AS THE BID IS EXTREMELY HYPOTHETICAL. THIS MEMBER WRITE-UP IS JUST ANOTHER REMINDER OF WHY WE DO NOT SUPPORT THIS TYPE OF BIDDING. REGARDING THE “OTHER” CONTRACTORS MENTIONED BY THE MEMBER: THERE IS A POPULATION OF CONTRACTORS THAT WILL BID LOW AND SAY EASY SHORTCUTS ARE APPROPRIATE (LIKE NOT GETTING PERMITS, USING UNLICENSED, SHADY SUBS, ETC.) TO GET JOBS. THESE CONTRACTORS WILL THEN COME BACK, ONCE A CLIENT IS INTO THE PROJECT, AND CHANGE ORDER AT EVERY TURN TO MAKE THEIR MONEY. THE PROCESS IS VERY SIMILAR TO WHAT IS DONE IN THE MORTGAGE INDUSTRY AND IS CALLED BAIT AND SWITCH. OUR INTEGRITY CALLS US TO STAND OPPOSED TO THIS TECHNIQUE.

Calling to schedule an appointment with BH Contracting went ok. The only negative point in that process was a feeling that the job I was describing as needing to be done had to pass a degree of qualification before they would consider coming out to do an estimate. Since what I described was a "bathroom facelift" in their definition, I was able to get an appointment with Brad. Brad showed up on time. He was nice, but in speaking with him about our desired updates, I felt like I was swimming against his tide of ideas. I have a good vision of what we want to do (simple updates), yet I felt like I was needing to override the vision that Brad had for us at several points in our conversation. As the homeowner/customer, I expect to be able to provide my idea, and discuss solutions to get the results I have in mind. Brad jotted down some notes here and there, but the entire process left me feeling like he was less than committed. He stated he would have an estimate to me by the end of the week. It has been over a week since his visit and still no estimate. Rather than following up with him, I am seeking estimates from other contractors.

Response from BH Contracting Services Inc
THE OWNER OF THE COMPANY IS AN IDEA PERSON & ENJOYS SHARING THEM WITH POTENTIAL CLIENTS. WE FIND PROVIDING THIS KNOWLEDGE (PAINTING THE POSSIBILITY OF WHAT COULD BE DONE & PITFALLS TO AVOID) IS A SERVICE TO OUR POTENTIAL CLIENTS. IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT THE MEMBER FELT THIS WAS A NEGATIVE. SOMETIMES IN LIFE, PARTICULAR INDIVIDUALS DO NOT HAVE THE SAME COMMUNICATION STYLE & SOMEONE MAY PERCEIVE NOT BEING HEARD OR SEE MULTIPLE IDEAS AS A HARMFUL. THIS SEEMS TO BE THE CASE. WE SUPPORT CLIENTS WORKING WITH A CONTRACTOR THAT THEY FEEL ‘GETS THEM’ OR THEIR IDEAS & HOPE JULIE FINDS AN APPROPRIATE FIT. I AM NOT SURE THIS SITUATION WARRANTS A NEGATIVE REPORT. THIS CLIENT DID RECEIVE A BID FROM US. ABOUT US: WE DO FOUNDATIONS TO ROOFS. WE DO ADDITIONS. WE HAVE A CREW THAT SPECIFICALLY DOES SMALL JOBS. IF THE MEMBER FELT HER JOB WAS TOO SMALL, THIS IS NOT THE CASE. WE LOVE SMALL JOBS; THEY ARE OUR BREAD & BUTTER.

The experience was excellent! Daryl was one of the workers that was outstanding to work with. They were professional and timely. They were very good with communicating what was going on. I would highly recommend them.

Although the company was going through some staffing upheaval, we found that working with Brad, his crew and his subcontractors was as enjoyable an experience as remodeling a kitchen could be. All work was scheduled in a manner that we always knew when someone would be on site, how long it would take and the workmen always arrived on time. Brian was our on site manager and you couldn't ask for a nicer, calmer and more professional person to work with. He will go far! There were some problems with the installation of our countertops, the painting subcontractor and the cabinets, but Joy and Brad dealt with these problems immediately and efficiently, without making us feel that we were unreasonable. Brad was also very good about letting us know when there were changes or additions and giving us the time to make the decisions. We always knew where we stood in terms of cost. I wouldn't hesitate to use these guys again for our bathroom remodel.
Description of Work: Replaced existing kitchen countertops, backsplash, and refaced cupboards. They also re-stained existing cupboard frames and created new re-stained frames for large picture window and smaller kitchen window.

This company seems very unresponsive whether to phone calls or email. Surprising considering its high Angie's List rating, which may or may not be deserved.
Description of Work: I called the company and left a voicemail detailing a job on my porch & deck. No response after 2 weeks.
