The only radon abatement company comprised of scientists and engineers and the oldest radon remediation company in the DC metro area, Radon Control Professionals (RCP) has always specialized in the radon removal and remediation of schools; large commercial, military and industrial buildings; and older more difficult homes. These systems are also effective in the extraction of moisture to prevent mold undefined mildew especially in crawlspaces.
Servicing Nationwide Commercially.
Radon Control Unprofessional would be much more appropriate. We setup an appt window between 9 and 10 am. At 10:20 no one had arrived and no phone call. I called and told she would contact the technician and call me back. 25 minutes later I received a call from the tech who said he was 35 minutes away. Based on our conversation he was unaware of the original appointment time. I called RDC to inform them that I was frustrated that the tech would arrive more than an hour late as I had other appts however no one answered. I left a VM asking for them to call me back. Well it’s 2:30 in the afternoon and no call back. The tech arrived at approximately 11:35 and was good. I have no complaints about the tech. He replaced the fan (which was under warranty) and now the system is working. I confirmed with the tech that he was not notified of our appointment until I called. My complaint is with the complete lack of contact with the company. The service fee was $150. I tried several times to talk to someone at the company with no luck. I wrote a check for $125 and left a message stating that If that was a problem to contact me. I would never use them again.

Since we were selling our house we were not able to be present at the time of service although our agent was there. We initially thought we had to replace the fan. Their tech came there and check it all out and said there was nothing wrong with the system and that it failed because it was on the same circuit as the sump pump. They did not replace the fan (which they could have and no one would have been the wiser) and only extended the wiring to another outlet on a different circuit - at MUCH lower cost. He even troubleshooted our sump pump and figured out that it was going bad and causing the problems. So for honesty and quick service these guys get an A++++ rating from me.
Description of Work: We were selling our house and the Radon system failed the test. The inspector claimed that the fan was not working. So we called several people for estimates and their estimate was very reasonable.

I contacted this provider after a short term test revealed elevated Radon levels in my house. After speaking to one of their professionals on the phone, I was told I would either be charged approx $825 or $1,650 based on the complexity of the job. That complexity would be determined by an on-site visit. Such a visit was scheduled but the morning it was to occur, I received a call saying that it had to be postponed. I was given a date about 2 weeks later at which time two gentlemen showed up, surveyed the site and told me that they would have a proposal to me ASAP. I received no such proposal. After following up with the office manager a week later, I was sent a proposal with a price range of $1,000-$2,000. I contacted the office manager to explain that this was completely inconsistent with what I had previously been told. She said she would follow up with her installers and get back to me. I never heard back again.

The technician, Pete, was prompt, and walked through what he was going to do including making sure it met building codes. The basement is also musty and saw that we have a crawlspace that he said may be causing the smell. He walked around outside and saw that the venting windows for the crawlspace was obstructed and recommended we open it before making an installation. He was did his work with no damage. Their phone system is not so reliable. I tried calling about four times but could not get through. I don't know if the phone was off the hook or if they are really busy

On the day work was scheduled to be done, no one had arrived by 11:00am so I called the main office to find out if the crew was on the way. The receptionist said she would check and have someone call me back. At 11:30, I still hadn't heard back. I called the office again and the receptionist said, "No one called you?" I said obviously no one had called -- because I was calling the office again after 30 minutes had passed without hearing from anyone. Once again, she said she'd have someone call me. About 15 minutes later, the "expert on problem installations" called to say he had been bitten by a bull dog (or pit bull, I can't remember which breed) and he was at the hospital receiving treatment. He asked that I call the office to reschedule the job. I called the office for the third time that day and canceled the job. For what it's worth, we hired Radon Control Professionals based on a realtor's referral two years ago. RPC performed an installation on the home we eventually sold and it was on that basis we decided to hire them again for the home we have now. Unfortunately, the man who supervised and performed the work that was done two years ago does not seem to be with the company anymore. Furthermore, after getting the "dog bite" story, I looked up recent reviews on Yelp and Angie's List. I wish I had checked those reviews sooner.
Description of Work: A representative from Radon Control Professionals came with two technicians to install a radon remediation system near the end of September. (The work to be performed had been estimated previously by another technician.) The representative stated that he was the company's expert for problem installations, and proceeded to inspect the area where the system was to be installed. Once he completed his inspection, he told us he wasn't ready to perform the installation after all because he hadn't been told by the office that extra materials were needed to do a particular portion of the job. He said he would report back to the office about the extra materials that were needed. He then mentioned that because the job involved digging, Miss Utility had to mark the underground utility lines. I asked why this hadn't been done already since they were scheduled to do the installation that day. (They should have called Miss Utility in advance since they knew digging was involved.) There was no explanation offered. I asked how they could have done the installation without the utility lines being marked. The reply was that they couldn't. Ten days later, there was still nothing marked by Miss Utility. I called the main office and the receptionist said calling Miss Utility had been overlooked. By my count, this was now twice this detail have been "overlooked." (BTW, Miss Utility is supposed to inform the requesting party when the lines have been marked so that work can proceed.) Several days later, I noticed the utility lines HAD been marked, but I had NOT yet received a call from RCP to reschedule their work. I called the office yet again to inform them the lines were marked. The receptionist thanked me for letting them know, and scheduled the work for a Tuesday morning start time between 8 am - 10 am.

Once we accepted their proposal, we were not able to get in touch with anyone via phone or e-mail to confirm the appointment. The install day came and went and no one notified us that they were not going to perform the work. We tried to call again after the appointment was missed and we were unable to leave a voicemail. We also followed up via e-mail and no one has responded over a week later. We are in the midst of trying to sell our house so this is now potentially affecting our settlement date. I would not recommend this company - communication / professionalism is very poor! The price was about on par with other companies in the area. We will definitely not be using them again in the future nor will our realtor use them again either.

I made an appointment to install a radon reduction system in 2 weeks. One day before the appointment I received a call stating that the technician was sick. I rescheduled my appointment to one week later. On the agreed date I stayed home waiting for the technician who was supposed to arrive between 8:00 and 10:00am. Nobody showed up. I called the receptionist at 10:30 am she told me she would check with the technician and get back to me. She never did. I called again in the afternoon and left a message to find out what was going. I've received no calls. I've decided there were too many warning signs that wasn't the right company for me and decided to work with another company with excellent reviews.

I'm pretty sad to have to be writing a bad review for this company. Back in 2009 we had them install our radon reduction system and everything went well and we were extremely pleased. Just recently I noticed that my radon fan had stopped working and of course I called the same company that had installed the equipment in the first place to repair or replace the fan. Unfortunately, they never showed up for any appointments that we scheduled. I took time off of work for the first appointment and was never contacted to cancel. For the subsequent appointments, thankfully I didn't bother taking the day off from work. In all, I've called 4-5 times and every time I'm told that someone is in my area and would be over to repair that same day. I have been stood up each and every time. I'm not sure what is going on but would have appreciated being told from the beginning that they would not be able to assist so as to not waste my time. All in all, I've wasted 2 weeks waiting for them to come help. My only recourse now, is to go with another company.

We purchased a home in Rockville Md, and the previous owners were supposed to have Radon mitigation system installed before the settlement date. The sellers credited us money at settlement because they reported that the Radon Control Professionals were not going to complete it by the settlement date. I called the Radon Control Professionals on April 17th, 2015. They already had two estimates on hand ($850 and $950) from previous home owners. They said they would work with those estimates depending on how we would want to route the vents. So, we made an appointment for May 4th, 2015. I took a day off from work on May 4th, and waited for the Radon Control Professionals to show up, instead I received a phone call stating that the appointment had to be cancelled due to the technician being injured over the weekend due to an accident. I was not pleased that I took a day off for this, but was OK when she told me that she can reschedule for a Saturday. So I made another appointment for Saturday, May 16th, 2015. On Friday May 15th, 2015 I called to make sure the technician is going to show up on the 16th. The lady on the phone said "We have you down for tomorrow, yup". She added that she will also confirm with the technician. I blocked off a Saturday for them to show up. I called the Radon Control Professionals few times Saturday morning to see what time they are showing up. Each time, got a voicemail stating that the voicemail was full. Around 10:30AM, I received a call from Anonymous number. The caller reported that he had to cancel due to the technician being in a car accident. OK, I felt bad for the "injured" technician on the first appointment. However, second appointment in two weeks with same excuse? Right. I told him about the lady calling with same excuse on the appointment two weeks ago, and that I'm taking my business elsewhere.
Description of Work: Was supposed to install Radon Control Devices, but failed to show up on TWO different occasions, despite having appointments and calling to confirm one business day before. UPDATE: It has been a year since we had the radon fan installed by this company. I had originally gave it a "B" rating, but have now downgraded it to an "F" because we now have leaks in our guest room ceiling where they installed the fan above it. Every time it rains hard, we get a leak. Although the owner responded to my initial review, they have done nothing to try to rectify the issue. Their service cost was lower than other companies, but we are paying more now to fix the damage to our home. I would NOT recommend this company to anyone. This is the first "F" rating I have ever given to any service provider. ORIGINAL REVIEW ON 9/29/2014 My husband handled the scheduling of the radon fan and was here for actual installation. He said the installation went fine. When I arrived home, I could hear a very loud humming/vibrating sound coming from one of our bedrooms. My husband said it was loud and the installer noted that as well, but said let's give it a few days to see if it still bothered me. It sure did, so I asked my husband to contact Radon Control Professionals to move the fan to the outside of our house. My husband insisted that he will take care of it, so he sent Jule an email. 4 business days go by and no response, so I decided to call them myself. Julie answered the phone and I asked if she had received my husband's email. She said it was in her inbox, but somehow overlooked it. I gave her the benefit of the doubt and just asked her to respond to my husband's email. She said she would and would have someone by the name of Steve call my husband. It's been 2 weeks and still no call or email to my husband. My husband didn't want to make a big fuss about this and decided to go to Home Depot and buy sound installation to buffer the noise himself. My issue is not so much the inital installation by Radon Control. It is the lack of customer service thereafter - VERY disappointing. My husband said they offered the best rate around and chose them because of all the positive reviews on Angie's List. I would have much rather paid a little bit more money for the good customer service before and AFTER the installation.

Thank you for the generally good review and I would like to explain our response to activating your 'builder's pipe'. Please understand that all we did was add a fan to the pipe that was installed by your builder. We had no control over the fact that he installed the pipe above your bedroom and we have also had complaints that homeowners hear vibrational sound from within walls where the builder attached the pipe incorrectly. I am currently working with the Director of the Radon Division of the VA Health Dept who would like to require that builders use certified radon mitigators to install these 'passive' pipes. This would eliminate these noise and other issues that have occurred with builder's installations. Stephen Hall, MS, PG President, Radon Control Professionals, Inc. .RCP, Inc was easy to contact and deal with. There were no issues with professionalism at all.
Description of Work: My name is Mike O'Hara. I used Stephen many years ago on a Town Home in Sterling. He was beyond professional. He actually performed the work himself if I am not mistaken. It was a little pricey but based on the length of pipe needed just to get out of the back of the home, it was understandable. I am just now going to refer him and needed to come into Angies list because I couldn't recall his name.

Radon Control Professionals is an outstanding company. They are very knowledgeable, reasonably priced, punctual and finished the job in the timeframe quoted with exceptional results! We could not have asked for a better outcome and are extremely pleased with their work and customer service. They turned our frustrating discovery of radon into their problem and we are now essentially radon free with lower levels in our house than the air we breathe outside! With two young children, that peace of mind is priceless. I would highly recommend this company to anyone.

In short - quick and painless process. We called the company up, got a price (not estimate) over the phone and scheduled the installation date and time. The radon tech arrived on time and within ~3 hours had the system 95% installed. He drilled 3 approx 1/2" and 1 x 3" hole in the concrete slab. He mounted the 3" PVC pipe in the 3" hole and caulked the rest. He completely caulked our sump pump pit. He needed an addition section of pipe or the outside portion so he returned the following Tuesday to install that (we did not have to be home). We also received a radon test kit from the company which is our responsibility to put in place for 2 days and then send off to a testing laboratory for analysis. The most impressive thing about this company is the LIFETIME warranty on everything except the outdoor fan (which is warranted for 5 years -- which is still very decent). The warranty details clearly were written by a company (not a lawyer) who are very confident in their product and service. To exerpt some of the highlights:: RCP guarantees to reduce the radon levels to below 4 pCi/l for the life of the home....... If a valid test is preformed which indicates levels above 4 pCI/l, RCP will pay for the test and perform further work at no expense until the level is reduced below 4 pCI/l.

The owner of this company sounds very knowledgeable, however, the company is very disorganized about scheduling and they never performed the work. On the day the work was scheduled to be performed, I received a call about an hour after our start time explaining that someone on the crew had been injured which was understandable (although last minute since they had been injured a couple of days before the scheduled work). Then they called back once that day to say they couldn't do the work any time that week and would call back to reschedule, but they never called back until today, over a month later. Needless to say, I got someone else to do the work several weeks ago (Radon Abatement Services - they were very organized, professional and did a great job).

I am righteously indignant about the insensitivity and fallacies in this review. Our technician was truly injured on July 2 but his physician's prognosis was that, although he should not work for 2 days, he would be able to resume work on the job date of July 5. However, on that morning he was still having so much pain that he was not able to work and our other technicians were fully booked with other jobs during this busiest time of the year. We called to explain the situation and, as [Member Name Reomved] stated, we called again that day. Per our standard procedure we tried to reschedule the job, which [Member Name Removed] was unable to accommodate at that time. We then awaited her return call and since we did not hear from her, again as she stated, after a month called her. Isn’t it a strange “coincidence”, that only at that time and not prior, she left this review? As you can see from our other very good reviews, we are an extremely reliable company that values our good reputation and based upon the extenuating and anomalous circumstances, we would appreciate you retracting your review. I worked with Norm Rodier and it was fantastic. He clearly explained everything he needed to do to fix the mold that our home had due to a flooded basement and the price was reasonable. During the job, Norm found more extensive mold damage to our bathroom vanity. I expected him to change the quote and add labor and materials, but because he hadn't included it in the estimate, Norm only charged for the materials (buying a new vanity at home depot). I was blown away. that was a few years ago and the vanity is working great and the mold has not returned. Great work and highly honest and professional.

I appreciated the 'A' rating in all catagories except the 'C' for the price of $350 which is the standard DC metro area price to replace an out-of-warranty fan. Our fans are warrantied, not by us, but by the manufacturer. So, the price is based more upon our fan cost than the time involved in labor.

We are in the process of selling our home. The home inspector (who apparently was absolutely incompetent) selected by our buyers had a huge list of "problems" for which we spent over $1200 to have various professionals come out to tell us...that there was no problem. The idiot inspector stated that the equipment was in a "very unusual place" on the exterior of the house, that it was plugged into a GFI plug, which was a no-no, that it had no gauge, blah, blah, blah. Now you must understand, I always research everything extremely thoroughly, and when we had the equipment installed, it was by a gentlemen we found on Angie's List who was the most highly recommended. He has since gone out of business locally, but the two companies I called to check the equipment both asked who had done the work, and both said he was a highly qualified professional who would have installed everything to code. Sure enough, when John came out from Radon Control Professionals, he said the equipment had been properly installed on the exterior of the house (which he told me is the most common way to install it), that a GFI plug was the safest electrical supply, and that if a gauge had been installed, it would have filled with water whenever it rained. He documented all of this on his service ticket so I could supply the information to our buyers.

I appreciate the 'A' ratings in all categories except the 'D' in price. We are required to be certified, licensed and experienced and had to make a special trip for the client, out of our way, in the extremely geographically extensive and expensive DC metro area. Does anyone think that $166 for such professional services in this inflated economic climate is excessive?

I called Jim at Radon Control Professionals upon the recommendation of my neighbor who is a realtor. She uses them exclusively when a home she sells needs radon remediation. I had called another company who was highly recommended on Angie's List and was quoted a price of $825 for a radon installation. Since Jim's price came in lower and he was recommended by a trusted source, I went with him. I called him on a Wednesday and he set me up for an install on the following Monday. He told me that he would not be the one coming to install the system himself but would be sending out one of the members of his team, all of whom have been at the company for at least 7 or 8 years I believe he said. The installer, Paul, was punctual, courteous, and very knowledgeable. He recommended installing the fan beside our HVAC unit to be as unobtrusive as possible and attaching the venting pipe right next to our existing down spout. I'm sure no one will even realize we have a radon unit because it blends in so well with the gutter and is hidden behind the HVAC. He took care in the basement to install the pipe as close to the wall as possible so that it didn't take up much space in the room. And when he was finished, about 3 hours from the time he arrived, he showed us everything he had done and explained how to read the gauge and told us what to expect in terms of the life-span of the fan. I could not have been more pleased with the whole process and I would definitely recommend this company to others.
