Poor to extremely disappinting experience from start to finish.
Description of Work: The owner of this establishment came to my house back in April and promised to provide an estimate of the additional items required. Never submitted such estimate or provided any proposal despite repeated phone calls with him and his assistance. I am extremely disappointed and would like to ask for a refund so I can engage someone else.

Response from Beacon Home Services
Dear Member, Words cannot express how truly sorry I am for the frustration and inconvenience that I have caused you. This is especially disappointing to me because this is not how I wanted you to remember our company. We take great pride in receiving A ratings and positive comments from our Angies list members. However, I know I failed to deliver with your project. Since this whole experience caused so much inconvenience I plan on providing a $200 refund to help offset the bad experience. I hope you’ll find this a reasonable refund. Not that it in anyway excuses my lack of communication with you but there were delays that were beyond my control in working with Dominion Engineers. I take full responsibility for my part in not keeping you updated as things progressed. To avoid this issue in the future, I have since implemented a new policy here at Beacon Electric to submit estimates even if we have to base them on assumptions. Again, as a customer of Beacon Electric you deserved better. I would like the opportunity to regain your trust and certainly hope you will grant us that opportunity. Sincerely, Bob Hanifin

We had asked Beacon to install an attic fan. Unfortunately, the pitch our home's roof was too steep for the work to be performed. The technicians were prompt, courteous and explained the difficulties in detail. They were helpful in providing information on other options we could consider.

Overalll, Beacon did a very good job. Their proposal and it's presentation was done by their engineer in a very professional manner. Only problem we had was that the technician who was assigned was not fully briefed on all the tasks to be done. Beacon rectified this to our satisfaction immediately. We found them to be very responsive and first rate. We would recommend them highly.
Description of Work: The work at our place was to upgrade the electrical panel to current standards, as well as to bring some of the wiring to compliance.

The price was somewhat higher than the coupon indicated because of restrictions on the number of circuits covered, but in the end I also got a whole house surge protector at a discount and felt that total price was reasonable compared to other bids although not the bargain that the coupon made it appear. In any case, the work was done well and promptly and I have had no problems since. The lesson learned was to always check for any limits on coupon work before buying.
Description of Work: I had an old fuse box replaced. There was some extra difficulty changing the location a bit to meet current code which was handled professionally.

Good experience overall. Ahead of time, I contacted the company and asked if they could install an additional attic fan (one in addition to Big Deal purchased), and we agreed on a price. They were about 1.5 hours after the stated arrival time, but not a major problem. Two men worked diligently, and were very professional. I know the small print in the Big Deal said that "steep roof" would be an additional charge, but I was taken aback when the additional cost was $285 (the same cost as the whole Big Deal), which I was only told after the job was complete. The workman didn't tell me it was a "steep roof" job until they were all done. I felt that this was an unfair high price, but at that point, I couldn't do anything. I suggest in the future that the company / technicians tell clients this fee up front, so they don't feel cornered / swindled at the end. With that being said, overall a good experience, and my upstairs already feels much cooler.

It took 2 or 3 visits over a period of 2 weeks.
Description of Work: left numerous holes in ceiling which were not included in project. The drywall repair work that they wouldn't do wasnt clearly stated in the coupon. Drywall repair work easily doubled price of the project.

Slightly rough start but great finish, so they deserve straight As! The Big Deal was very popular, so it took a while for me to get on their calendar. Then, on the day of service, there was a tie up on the Beltway and the technician couldn't get to me. No big deal -- we all know the Beltway, but Bob (the owner) called very apologetic, and we rescheduled for the following day. Vincent showed up right on schedule. He went over what I purchased and upgrade options. He was very friendly and knowledgable. In addition to installing the attic fan, he helped me with a couple of other electrical problems I knew I had and found a few I didn't know I had. He was great about giving me options but not giving the hard sell. I was very comfortable with him and felt like I got a really good deal for my money. They even threw in one light switch for free to make up for having to reschedule the appointment. All in all this was a very professional company. I felt like I really mattered as a customer and that my business and satisfaction was important to them. I was treated respectfully and got good value for my money. I will definitely use them again.
Description of Work: I bought an Angie's list Big Deal for a new attic fan at $285, which is included in the cost shown above. Once they were here, I upgraded to a fan that has a lifetime warranty and a heat sensor with an automatic shut off switch. I had to have the power source drawn into the attic, and they installed a pull light while there. Also, they did a full house inspection, and fixed two electrical sockets that weren't working. They put in a new light switche/outlet in the bathroom, and added a dimmer switch to the dining room lights.

I scheduled appointment with Bob from Beacon Electrical Company and he listened to my rather long list of problems with our electrical problems including the need for an upgraded (new) whole house electrical panel and various outlets that were giving us trouble. Also had no phone service for a necessary phone for bottom floor. He checked out all our electrical problems in very detailed and thorough manner and when all concerns were covered we set up time (thru his office staff) when his electrician specialist could come out to the house and do the job. The electrician arrived early Wednesday morning (he called previously to let us know his approximate arrival time.) Victor was great. He replaced electrical panel and went thru entire house, checking all areas of house and any concerns with special problems we had been experiencing. He never stopped. He did everything we needed plus install a whole house surge protector. I actually said good bye to him thinking everything was done, but he said, no, he was not finished and wanted to make sure I was aware of everything he had done. He also made sure everything was perfectly cleaned up and wanted to know when the trash would be picked up so he could put his bundle and boxes in the right place for me! I was so impressed with his professionalism thru the whole job. He made sure I understood everything he did inside the house as well as the wiring, etc. that he had done outside and what inspection from our local pepco power company would entail and he set that up for us. Beacon will send me copy of work order for Pepco ( for certification that all work is up to code for county. ) Victor set that up for me for tomorrow (friday.) I would definitely call Beacon Electrical for future electrical work and would recommend them with the highest ratings. Maryanne C. Mildner

Purchased from Angie's list a discount for installation of attic fan from Beacon Electrical Services. Very happy with overall experience, from prompt and courteous scheduling of the service to the installation - Top notch! The two man crew, Jimmy and Victor, called to say they were running ahead of schedule. When informed I was not, it was no problem and they would be waiting. Upon arrival home, pleasure to see two professionals with friendly personalities ready to go to work. After explaining what they would be doing and some options, they went to work. Again, professional, respectful and friendly. Took care/notice as they were going through the house with equipment, wore booties over their shoes and completely clean up afterwards (now if I could get my kids to do that!) . Victor and Jimmy are the best and fantastic representatives for their company. Looking forward to using them again in the future! Great job, Jimmy & Victor!

So-so - work was done, but there were small print items that surprised me and the cost changes and lots of extras were added, along with a list of things that needed to be done to make my house safe -- flet somewhat like a bait and switch. they did do the work however and the lights work and look nice, except for the 5 holes in my ceiling -- don't think I would go for the special again.
Description of Work: The team was nice and punctual, but I did not like that in the fine print of the contract, they stated that they would not repair the drywall after installing the recessed lights - they said no good electrician would do so - and I informed them that my prevous electrician did (unfortunately he retired). The also kept showing me the special as $399, but this package was $499, it seems they should update their material before showing it to customers. Also they offered an upgrade in the dimmer switch but after it was installed I was told it would not work with LED lighting -- then they did an inspection (free with the $499 package) and found an additional $2,000 of wok that needed to be done on my home. Also, while they used booties for their shoes and plastic covering for the furniture, the dry wall they cut (5 holes in all) in the ceiling, caused a lot of plaster dust when you tried to move it over the hole in the ceiling -- all the covering of the floors became a moot point after they left and I still had a repair issue. This just seemed to be a bate and switch approach. The work they did was good, but I don't think I will buy into this special package deal in the future.

The Beacon serviceman was cordial and knowledgeable and, overall, the experience was a very positive one (unlike the experience I had with the TV repairman -- who was NOT from Beacon Electric!).
Description of Work: My big screen TV was fried after the massive power outage we had in June 2012 (apparently there was a power surge when electricity was restored, causing the damage. The fact that I had it plugged in to a premium surge protector didn't save my TV). The Beacon serviceman came the very day I called to check my TV outlet (it was OK) and to install a whole-house surge protector. He showed me the work after he finished it and explained the extent of protection the whole-house surge protector provided and the guarantee it came with. I used a $25 Angie's coupon. With the coupon, I feel the final price I paid for the work was appropriate. I have had no problems since. In my opinion, Beacon performed the work quickly, efficiently and professionally.

Beacon sent Victor to handle the replacement work. A couple weeks prior to him coming, the main office called to confirm his appointment prior to coming, and allowed me to adjust the time so I could be available and away from work. Victor came out on time on the day of service. He is an exceptionally nice guy, and explained the entire process. The replacement took a couple of hours, and the work was excellant, even on older plaster walls in our house. We owed a small amount from some additions to the work (recepticle covers we selected cost a bit extra, and he fixed a light switch for us). The payment process was immediate using an ipad, and the invoice paid was sent to my email right in front of me. We were impressed with their use of technology to provide good service. We definitely plan to use Beacon again for some upgrades to our basement rec room lighting, and our bedrooms. Victor was particularly helpful, and offered great money saving suggestions as to using specials the company will be making available to handle those projects. We also hope to use their services for future company/media center work as well. It couldn't have been a better experience with Beacon. We have worked with several electrical contractors, and they are far above all of them in terms of quality and service.
Description of Work: We hired Beacon to replace 24 of the old plug recepticles in our 1964 rancher. They offered an incredibly reasonable deal to do the work, so good we couldn't pass it up!

When we called them to set up a time there was a lot of confusion from the start. They could not get the right address. I called the receptionist and she said she would call me back, but she never did. We finally got them to come to the house after they went to the old house. After all this confusion we just decided that we did not want to use there service.

All of the people I had interaction with at Beacon were very helpful. From the start - Denise, the Office Manager who handled my first call answered all my questions about my house with its being from the 50's and having the 2 pronged outlets. She understood my concern about buying the Big Deal without knowing whether it would be appropriate for me, so she put in touch with Bob. the owner. Bob really analyzed the problem over the phone quickly and said he would send someone out to check the outlets beforehand to access them before scheduling the job, and he would honor the coupon price whenever I scheduled the work. So it all worked out great as it usually does when a company really wants to work with you. The guys, Victor and Kevin, were a joy to have around all day. They worked professionally and efficiently. Victor explained any questions I had and was very patient all day long. They were quiet, clean and good workers. Happy too. Kevin had me laughing several times that day. Victor as lead Electrician was able to give me some free "extra" like no charge items, which I was very grateful for. Victor , you deserve a lot of praise for a job well done! I am glad I got you for the Electrician on this job. And thank you for the Lifetime Guarantee!!
Description of Work: Two men, worked diligently all day long to accomplish the following: Replace over 25 old electrical outlets, including some old ones that needed to be upgraded to GFI ones. Changed all the cover plates to new metal ones. Replace over 35 switches, some were 2 way, and one was very complicated, and changed all cover plates. Had to trouble shoot several. Replace dryer toggle switch (don't ask) Replace fan switch Repair overhead fan Whole House Surge Protector Replace and upgrade the total electrical panel to 2000 amps or whatever the upgrade is, including all outside digging of grounding poles and all outside new wiring and new fuses -- about 25 them. It was a big job. They started at 7:30 am and said usually would have finished a job like this at about 3 pm. Because the outlets and switches and wires were so old and they was so much troubleshooting it took them a few hours longer and they did not leave until about 6:15 pm. Victor, who was the lead senior electrician, told me he would have stayed until the job was completed even if it took until midnight. Wow!!! That's dedication! Both he and Kevin worked very hard.

No call received yet; it's been more than a week. Again, I understand if they cannot get to the job immediately, but I would appreciate a call back acknowledging the request (and payment) had been received. This is a job that shouldn't take a very long time, since there is already an existing attic fan in place; this is simply a replacement. Update 8/16/12: I have still received no response to my phone call or email. Since it is the heat of summer that necessitates having a functioning attic fan, I decided to contact another company and hope for better customer service. I called Angie's List and spoke with Brent to have my credit card credited back for the charge, and asked him to send me some other companies that might be more responsive. As I stated above, I realize that a company in the metro area may be too busy to handle a heavy workload, but they need to at least call and let their customers know. A phone call only takes a few minutes, tops. I've wasted almost two weeks of valuable time that I could have at least had someone scheduled to do this job. Now I'm back to square one again. Hopefully some of the other Angie's List companies will be more considerate. Boo.
Description of Work: No service performed, as nobody has contacted me. I signed up, and paid, through Angie's List, for the $320 Attic Fan Installation on August 5th, as our existing attic fan died and we really notice it with the heat we've endured this summer. On the morning of August 7th, I left a voicemail message explaining that I signed up through Angie's List for this special, and to please call me so we could schedule the work. I didn't receive a call back, so, on Sunday, August 12th, I sent them an email follow up. I understand that they might be very busy, and might not be able to do this work immediately, but, at the very least, they could call to acknowledge the payment and let me know when they expect to be able to perform the task.

Called in advance to ask several questions, get some details, understand the fine print, etc. In particular, I wanted to know how much the surcharge was for handling painted over outlets (as mentioned in the ad). They said about $10 each. Once I was satisfied, I ordered the Big Deal. They contacted me shortly thereafter to schedule the work, but I actually wanted to wait a couple of weeks-- wasn't ready to have the work done. Finally I got the appt. scheduled. The appt. was shortly after the dechero storms and we'd only had power for a few days. I actually FORGOT the appt until he called when he was on his way. Completely my fault, but he still seemed willing to reschedule. I decided to go ahead with it but I wasn't completely ready-- that is, choose which outlets to replace, move furniture, etc. The tech was very patient and understanding. I *wish* I could remember his name-- Hispanic...maybe Raoul? He showed me the child-proof outlets and let me play with one to see if it was annoying to use (it wasn't). He then noticed some old-style two-prong outlets in the house and asked me if they were grounded. I said I didn't know, and he said that if they weren't grounded, there would be an additional charge. I was absolutely LIVID because that's exactly the kind of thing I was trying to avoid when I called to get details, etc. Apparently I didn't ask the right question to learn about that particular surcharge, and they didn't mention it to me. Fortunately, even the old two-prong outlets were grounded, so disaster averted. I asked him about the surcharge for the painted over outlets, and he said he wasn't going to charge extra. Basically I got the impression he thought that was unnecessary surcharge and didn't enforce it. Not sure if it was because minutes before, I was very irate. But I was very grateful. Anyway, he shadowed me as went through the whole house checking for old outlets and keeping track of how many faceplates needed replacing. It took me awhile to finalize everything, but he remained very patient and started the work while I finalized things. I had no problem leaving him to go to work-- our nanny was still home and they had chatted amiably in Spanish earlier. So in the end, the tech was great and the work was great, but the tone of this review would have been different if our outlets had been un-grounded-- so be sure to find out first!
Description of Work: Big Deal: $399 to Replace up to 25 of your Old Existing Electrical Outlets. In my case, they replaced the full 25 outlets to childproof outlets and installed 12 new faceplates to replace old ones. Most of the outlets were two-prong, all were grounded, but some of them were painted over (seems so weird now that people used to do that).

These guys were very personably and fun to have around. Exceedingly polite, they made sure to ask questions before doing anything we hadn't agreed on. While Luis was installing our lights, Victor gave us a full house inspection on our electrical system and found two whole rooms in which the outlets were not grounded. He also said our electrical panels 'looked great' and suggested upgrading our outlets to be safer. They said it would take four hours to complete the work that we were having done today and that was about right. I was very impressed with how nice they left the work area. There were lots of pencil marks all over the ceiling because we changed a couple of locations during the process, but Luis went around and erased every last one. At the end, Victor gave us an estimate of all the work that we wanted in future plus what he recommended for the rest of the house (we need a light fixture, a new ceiling fan, and we're having some trouble with the recessed lighting in the basement). There was absolutely no pressure to buy anything else. It was just an offer. One of my pet peeves is when companies try to strong-arm me by telling me I'll get a certain percentage off if I sign up today! Beacon did NOT do this, which is good, because I would have never hired them again if they had. Luis and Victor are awesome, they communicate well and are fun to have around. They know what they are doing and they don't pressure you into buying services you're not sure about.
Description of Work: We bought the deal: four recessed lights plus dimmer switch. It was easy to make the appointment. On the day of the service, the person was nearly an hour late, but the boss called then and told us he was sick. He offered to have a different team come in the afternoon (same day) and that worked for us. He was apologetic and professional about it. Victor and Luis came about 15 minutes after they said they would. They came right in and we had a chat about what we wanted where. They offered suggestions about changes to our plans. We went back and forth a few times and finally found a great solution that would require us to buy two more lights, but at a discount. They told us exactly what they were going to do, how there would be holes left in the drywall when they were finished, etc. At the end of the day, it was exactly as they had promised.

Bob and my wife worked out a plan satisfied by all. The job was completed when Bob said it would and again a excellent job. We are VERY HAPPY with this Company.

I purchased a Big Deal through Angie's List for them to install an attic fan. They called me today to let me know that the deal would not actually work for me. There was an error on the web site where it didn't state that it was only for new fans. I really appreciated the fact that they were honest and told me that they couldn't do the service.

I had a great experience with Beacon and am already planniing on using them again. Angie's List had a deal with Beacon that you could get 4 recessed lights for $399 and we signed up. I received a phone call from the scheduler at Beacon within a few days and she was pleasant and helpful, she even called me last minute to see if I wanted them to do the work earlier than planned and got me an electrician on Saturday. The electrician showed up on time and was professional, polite and friendly. He explained everything he was going to do and how he would do it. I was amazed at how clean the project was. The electrician put plastic on the floor, measured the area and marked the places where the lights would go using lasers instead of chalk lines and vacuumed what little debris was left. Part of the deal was for Beacon's electrician to check all outlets and the electrical panel in the home, so that was a nice safety bonus. I asked the electrician if he could properly install a light fixture over my bathroom vanity, one we had put in but it was obviously not secure. I did pay him for his extra work but he was willing to do it wihtout complaint and did the work neatly and quickly.
Description of Work: Had a hanging light fixture in the kitchen removed and capped and had Beacon install 4 recessed lights
