When I signed up for the Big Deal panel upgrade from Beacon Electrical Services I did not notice that they do not service my area. Upon receiving an email after purchasing the panel upgrade there was a p.s. in their email stating that they do not service Prince George's County, MD so I inquired about a refund. They were very accommodating, agreeing to do the work, since I had already purchased the Big Deal. During the estimate process I was told that there were additional items necessary to do this project. These items added another $1,356 to the $1,599 I had already paid. The additional items included: permit $287.50; 2awg 30 ft bonding jumper $275 to replace existing; 200 Amp service entrance cable $225; 200 Amp service drop entrance cable $431.25 (I was told Pepco would not supply though Dominion Va Power does supply this for free); and new weather treated plywood to mount panel $138. Bob Hanafin was extremely professional and pleasant to work with during the estimate process, though I must note that when I sent him emails to ask questions I did not receive a reply. I talked to friends in my area who had a panel upgrade installed recently and learned they paid between $1,500-$1,700, and none recalled paying for the additional items that I was quoted. Since I didn't hear back from Bob, I contacted Angie's List and was able to obtain a refund on my Big Deal after explaining that I was concerned about the additional costs. I would have been satisfied paying $1,599 for this service but $2,955 seemed excessive in my opinion.
Description of Work: Bob Hanifan came out to give me an estimate on installing the panel upgrade and did a basic electrical inspection and discussed optional work I might want done.

Outstanding service. From the first telephone call to inquire about a back-up generator, through the entire installation process, and to obtaining the check by the county inspector, Bob and Victor at Beacon Electric did a superb service. Beacon is truly a professional organization that understands its customers. They arrived on time, did outstanding work, and left the area better than when they arrived. Who could ask for more? I will not hesitate to use Beacon Electric again and highly recommend them for your electrical needs.

Took until almost 10PM to finish because the extra thickness of my 2x4s meant that there wasn't enough space for the panel box in between the studs. But everything is working fine. The extra charges for things not included in the Angie's list coupon for the panel replacement were not out of line with what I was expecting. A couple of weeks after the work was done Beacon sent a different electrician to inspect the work and my wiring. He added a couple of breaker locks that he said are required by code. I found the people at Beacon very easy to work with. Beacon's technicians could get their work done more quickly if they kept their tools charged up, and had all the supplies that they need on the truck, but since they were charging by the job and not by the hour I didn't mind the delays.
Description of Work: replaced old breaker panel and did a small amount of rewiring.

Great! Their service was excellent. They called ahead of time, they were prompt and professional. The young man answered all of my questions with enthusiasm. I gave them high marks! I won't be able to use the fan until the summer time, so I gave them "Good" with respect to the quality of the product. I'm taking them at their word. I was also able to have them install a remote control in my ceiling fan. I was very pleased with their service. I was also impressed that they cleaned up after themselves. They have my recommendation!

Victor and Steven were fantastic! They were not only prompt and professional, but very honest about what really needed to be fixed to things I could do on my own to save money. Both were very friendly and willing to take the time to answer questions and show me what they were working on. Both are also very knowledgeable and have been in the business for a long time. I highly recommend Beacon and I will always ask for Victor and Steven if I need more work done. I also recommend using Angie's list coupons from Beacon as they are so worthwhile as they save a lot of money!
Description of Work: I had recently purchased a house that needed a lot of electrical work done--ranging from a panel upgrade, fixing fire/shock hazards, to fixing previous illegal wiring in the house. This was a two full day project.

Our 1952 duplex in Alexandria is one where you couldn’t have two appliances running at the same time anywhere in the house without having to reset the breakers. Over the years, we learned to live with the shortcomings, but every time we talked about any type of remodeling, we kept saying that the electrical in the house would need to be redone and the 1967 breaker panel would have to be replaced. When a power surge fried the year-old refrigerator after the derecho, we knew it was time to get an electrician. After interviewing three electricians who were A-listers on Angie’s List, I chose Beacon Electrical. Beacon’s owner Bob Hanifin was the first electrician I felt actually listened to me when I told he the work I wanted done. Essentially, I was looking to make sure I wasn’t living in a fire-trap, didn’t have to run extension cords all over the house and could run the dishwasher, toaster and clothes washer at the same time. When I handed Bob my three-page wish list of electrical work, he took the time to explain what my home really needed and what it didn’t. He didn’t over-sell anything and suggested ways to save money. His honesty was so refreshing. Bob has exceptional communication skills. He broke my wish list down into three separate estimates. In doing so, the costs were broken down into what he saw as must-do items, secondary things and finally, those items that were truly extras. This really helped me prioritize and save money. I realized that I could hold off on the “extras.” Other estimates were not this detailed. I was able to take advantage of one Angie’s List Big Deal ($1,599 for a new 200 AMP panel), and Bob gave me the price of another deal - $1,440 to replace all the switches and plugs in the home and add two GFCI receptacles in the kitchen. While other electricians said there was no need to be home during the work, Bob said just the opposite and was able to schedule the work around my work schedule. Victor, the electrician who did the work, arrived early or right on time. He’s a friendly electrician who worked quickly and efficiently. The work was done over two days. The second day Victor had a helper and they stayed until 11 p.m. to complete everything. The one “extra” that I did opt to get was a $650 connection for a generator. I hadn’t considered it until Victor mentioned it, but think in the long run it will be beneficial. When I had questions after the work was done, Victor was quick to respond, either by email or by phone. Superstorm Sandy temporarily delayed the work Dominion needed to do after Beacon installed the new electrical panel, but it wasn’t a big deal. Two months after the work was done, I had Beacon come back after a GFCI outlet in the bathroom went bad. (I wish I had known it was the outlet and not my electric toothbrush before I bought a new toothbrush!) Jimmy, the electrician, arrived early and worked quickly to make the replacement. The days of extension cords are gone, and so are the frustrations of having to reset the breaker every time the coffeemaker and microwave were on. My experience with Beacon Electrical was completely positive. I’ve recommended the company through our neighborhood’s Facebook page and directly to others I know.
Description of Work: Beacon Electrical installed a new 200 AMP panel, new circuit breakers, new ground rods and a new 200-amp meter base. Beacon removed, replaced and troubleshot switches and plugs throughout the entire duplex, added five quad outlets and added circuits for the microwave, dishwasher, disposal, refrigerator driver and computer. Beacon fixed a ceiling fan light so that it could be operated by a light switch, separated the attic fan from the attic light, replaced the attic pull chain fixture, replaced and troubleshot two outdoor lights, installed new fluorescent lights in the back of the basement. Beacon also added a whole house surge protector and added a connection so we can hook up a generator when the power goes out.

Great company to deal with. Bob Hanifin and his crew very professional in every way. I responded to an Anglie's List ad for a panel upgrade and contracted with Bob for the work. When Victor arrived on the day of installation I asked him about adding on a break-out panel and outside jack for a portable generator I was contemplating. He smoothly reworked the program to get it all done that day. The final hookup of the reworked meter box and service drop cable by Dominion took forever. Dominion's pre-installation inspection was done by an engineer who approved a certain kind of service drop cable run method; that plan was negated by another Dominion engineer after the panel work was done which caused Beacon to have to redo a portion of the outside work to meet changed Dominion specs. Beacon's attitude through this all (it took weeks to get Dominion to finally inspect and decide on the service drop method) was positive, professional, and done with good cheer. Of note: the Fairfax County inspector of the electrical panel installation was most complimentary of Beacon's work. Additional note on the Dominion electricians who did the final service hookup: excellent and professional work. And, the Dominion people I spoke with over the phone and who came by the house were very friendly and concerned about doing the right thing. I most highly recommend Beacon.
Description of Work: Replaced electrical panel (upgraded original house equipment) from 150 to 200 amp service. Installed portable generator port and sub-panel.

In the end we were satisfied with their work but the process was not completely easy. It started with them not showing up on the day they were supposed to come out to discuss the work with us. My husband had taken the day off work, when they didn't show at the appointed time my husband called them, they said they were short staffed and apologized. They discussed the work over the phone but the day they came to do the work again they were short staffed and said the work was going to take longer than expected and I would was going to be without electricity for the day. This had never been mentioned to us and since I work from home this would have been a great inconvenience. After accessing the work a bit closer they said they would not have to cut the power for the day, just for a short period. There was some confusion about what work we needed to have done. After a number of phone calls between the owner and my husband everything was figured out and in the end all the work was done in one day. The owner tried very hard to make everything right and was very kind and professional. He sent 2 extra men to our house to finish the work. By the end of a long day they were anxious to leave and I don't feel the clean up was as good as it could have been. Plus they didn't put electrical cables/wires back where they belonged behind the insulation in 2 places and I had to ask for the 2 outside covers that we were to get and they didn't explain you had to knock out part of the cover to use it. But the 3 employees that came to our house were also very kind and professional, overall they did a good job and we've been pleased with the results.

Beacon Electric was very responsive and worked with me as I already had an attic fan that had stopped working. They gave me several options to work with to figure out what would be the best alternative to install the fan. They arrived promptly on the day that the work was scheduled. The work was completed very efficiently and the assigned technician was very responsive and polite. He asked if he should leave his shoes on in the house as he saw all of ours were at the door. After installation, he walked me through the set-up and operation. I would recommend them and did to my in-laws who also need an attic fan.

The initial inspection was done well; however, it took quite awhile to get the actual electrical panel upgrade and other work scheduled. Only other concerns related to some confusion about whether or not the electrical work on the installation of our hot tub that had been done previously by another company was actually up to code, and, if it wasn't up to code, what it would take to remedy the situation. The issue was raised during the initial inspection and it was not resolved. We still have some concerns about whether or not we need to find another electrician to give us more information in that regard. While the hot tub installation was not the work of Beacon Electric, it was an issue that was raised during their inspection, and it would have been helpful if they could made sure we had clear information on what we needed to do to remedy the problem.
Description of Work: Inspection and evaluation of the electrical system for the entire house, upgrade of electrical panel, replacement of electrical outlets kitchen that were not up to code for area near water source, and repair of electrical lines in the garage, which had not been done properly.

We purchased the electrical panel repair form Angie's List. They came to do an estimate, and there were things not included in the deal, so the cost ended up not particularly being a deal but what we would expect to pay for the work. They were professional, and the work was done well. Later, we brought in an electrician recommended by a friend. He said he would have replaced the panel for the same cost but with higher quality equipment. When he inspected, he found some things that were not up to code (he's an inspector also) in places where Beacon had also looked. Beacon is good, but we will stick with our other electrician, as we feel that he is more attentive to detail.
Description of Work: They replaced the electrical panel, installed some new outlets where we were having a kitchenette put in and in our main kitchen to bring it up to code (that required adding to the panel also). They did an inspection and recommended replacing some of the existing outlets in the basement that were not wired correctly.

I was thinking to install a attic fan for a long time. When I saw a BIG deal, i checked the service provider rating. On seeing the great rating, I bought the big deal and call them to set up an appointment in morning about 8:00AM. They came on time and explained and installed attic fan. It took about an hour for them to do that. Since then my top floor rooms do not get hot in summer. Very happy with the installation. Very much satisfied and will do it again if I get a BIG deal offer from them.

Victor Figueroa was my technician, and he was very prompt (even a little early, which is fine by me), courteous and efficient. When he arrived, Victor greeted me properly in the morning, put on shoe coverings to protect my brand new carpet and fully explained to me what he was going to do and how much it would cost. He performed an electrical diagnostic on the light switch for my ceiling light and determined that the switch needed to replaced. He then went ahead and replaced the switch with an updated version (no big, round knob to deal with anymore). After all was said and done, the process took less than an hour, and I was very happy with the result. My only potential issue would be with the price, since $174.00 for less than an hour's worth of work seems steep. However, the professionalism with which the work was done and the peace of mind I have now that the light is fixed makes it easy to overlook the cost. I would definitely recommend using Beacon (and Victor Figueroa, if you can get him) again.

Very happy with the work by Bob Hanifan and Don Fenton and their teams.
Description of Work: Bob Hanifan and his guys instralled a Generac natural gas 7KW generator at my residence. Installation went fine with no problems. The cost for the generator was 3500. The add't 1800 was for the natural gas to be properly connected with the right pressure. Don Fenton did the natural gas work. It was a little more than what I had expected, didn't expect a 1800 bill for the connection, but I am very satisfied with the work that they both did and recommend them. Another cost to think about is home generator maintenance, which runs for about 400-500 hundred annually. The generator gives me piece of mind and was worth the cost.

It went perfectly. Their technician showed up on time and on schedule. He had everything he needed. He even supplied my house with power from a generator throughout the day so I could continue to work from home that day. He had everything he needed when he arrived, and even with the LONG list of things to do, he stayed until everything was done and cleaned up. I have had no problems at all and the upgrade was DEFINITELY worth every penny. Beacon's services are stellar and I will contact them again should I have any future needs.
Description of Work: I bought the Angie's List deal to have the entire electrical box replaced. I had a flood earlier in the year and the water came through the electrical box twice. Thank goodness that deal came along. I added a few other things to the "to-do" list including a whole house surge protector as well as new outlets outside my home. They did an excellent and professional job.

Went well. We got this company off a Groupon. When they arrived they told us the lights we purchased were builders grade (made me a little angry) and that we should really move up to a different light fixture. It ended up that one of the lights was not wired properly and they had to come back. When they realized their mistake they came back promptly and fixed the problem.

I setup an estimate for replacing a number of outlets, installing cable and cat5 outlets in several rooms. Victor came out the week before to perform the estimate. The estimate was in-line with others I received, and I chose Beacon because of the Angie’s List reviews. I was their first appointment the day they performed the work. They arrived a little bit ahead of time, which worked for me. The job took all day. They didn't have to cut out a substantial amount of drywall to run the coax and cat5 lines which was nice. They also cleaned up after they completed their work. In the process of installing, they did a whole-house inspection at no charge. At the end of the job, Victor walked me through all of what they did. As a part of the work, they installed a smart box to handle all the coax and cat5 connections. That evening, I discovered an issue with the data connections (cat5) not getting a signal from the output connections in the smartbox panel. I sent an email to Beacon that night, and Victor was able to come out the next day and remedy the problem. Overall, I was satisfied with work performed. I will use them again for future electrical work.

They were very prompt and professional. They did an excellent job however one of the circle cuts hit a stud in the ceiling and they had to redo the cut elsewhere, which was understandable but you would think that they would've used a studfinder. Heck, even i have one! That would've prevented me from having to replace and patch the extra hole in the ceiling. Otherwise, I cannot complain, they do great work.
