Description of Work: Said that they would add a bench with back and it when it was built their was no back and it would be an additional 500.00 dollars . When I complained , I was told the sales rep had a habit of making promises and not put the information on the plan

Description of Work: Quality Deck installed an approximate 20 x 20 cedar deck with a 10 x 10 pergola. | |When we agreed to build the deck we told Mike that we had a hard deadline for completion of the day before Good Friday. Mike indicated that would not be a problem. As that date approached there were delays and we were very nervous that we would not meet our deadline. | |Josh, the construction manager said that they would make the deadline without fail. To his credit they were finished with the exception of completion of railing on an existing patio by the day before Good Friday. By noon on Good Friday they were 100% complete. | |We could not be happier with the finished product. I recommend Quality Deck to anyone who want a great looking deck.

Response from Quality Custom Decks
Customer had a request to waterproof the underside of a deck that he had previously built. Quality Custom Decks had contracted the job at no money down, Which is the policy of Quality Custom Decks. Upon sending multiple experts (at our expense) to his property to assess the project we came to the conclusion that it could not be done. We apologized for any inconvenience in time consumption and again never asked the Customer for any money for our estimates or experts time. At this date this job has been cancelled and no work has been done for the Customer.

My deck was in dire need to be re-built. Mike took a week to return my initial call and apologized for the delay, stating he could not get through on my line although I had other voice mails on the same line during the same period of time. He did finally schedule a time to come out and was on time. Seemed professional and knowledgeable. After communicating what I was looking for and my approximate budget, he stated, Quality could meet any budget, however, the tear down would not be economical and could not be done within that amount. I asked him to bid without the tear down. I did make one attempt to follow up via email, however, never heard from him again. As it turns out my budget was too low, so I ended up getting financing to complete the job. Quality Decks loss. Will never call them again.

I first sent an Email through Angie's list to Mike requesting him to contact me for an estimate. After 3 days of no contact I decided to try a phone call. Mike came out within a few days and provided a design plan and quote on the spot. On February 13th I notified Mike that I made a decision to accept his bid, on February 15th I received the contract, signed and returned. We had to wait about 2 weeks for my HOA to approve the design so we could get in the schedule. Steve contacted me and said they would start on the 12th if the HOA approved everything by then... Since the approval came in a little earlier they delivered materials on Friday the 9th and said they would be back on the 12th to start. Monday came and went with no call and no show from anyone. When I got home from work and called to inquire I was told by Steve that he thought they had worked on it all day, he then had the deck builder call me (Daniel) who said he was working on his truck and couldn't make it. Tuesday construction started and I got home about 3pm to find Daniel gone for the day and things weren't looking right. They had nailed ledger to my house, set posts no more than 8" deep, and started to hang joists without installing beams or using joist hangers. I made a list of my concerns and sent it in to Mike's email address since that is the only one I have, I also called and left Mike a voice message, both email and voice message stated to please not continue until someone comes to discuss construction problems. The following morning Steve called me to check in, he sounded like he knew there were problems and that he would go by that day to check on the build. I felt better that someone in charge was going to check things out and I was confident they received my email and were addressing my concerns. Upon returning home Wednesday afternoon I found frame work had continued in the same manner it had on Tuesday, I called Steve and he said he hadn't been by after all. It was here I thought something was weird and asked if he had received the email I sent Mike. Turns out Mike just ignored all my correspondence and Steve knew nothing about my concerns. I explain briefly over the phone my frustration and ask Steve to meet me on site Thursday to discuss. Steve arrives as planned and listened to my concerns, he told me not to worry that he would review everything with Daniel and ensure it gets built properly. Daniel was to add 6 more posts set at the proper 18" depth, install two beams as originally planned, and add joist hangers and bolts. Thursday after work I found 3 holes dug and 1 beam installed. Friday the other 3 holes and beam were done and some (1/4) of the decking was started. I called Steve again to see why the builders were only working 4-5 hours per day max... I was told this would be a 2-3 day build and we are now on day 5 with no sign of any type of haste. Steve said that Daniel was having some personal problems, children, custody, something along the lines of he has other things to do. He said that due to the delays Daniel would be working all day Saturday. Saturday came and I waited all day... nobody showed. Monday progressed with more of the surface decking being laid, almost entirely. Tuesday the builder installed 2 section of railing. Wednesday I took off early and hung around while they worked all the way to 5 (I guess you have to be home to get a full day of work) Daniel at one point said they would just stay late and finish. He later changed his mind and said they would be back Thursday to finish, he also tried to get me to sign the customer satisfaction form which I declined to do. I called Steve after Daniel left and asked him to replace a damaged 2x4 on the railing, no problem. Thursday after work I came home to find the builder had finished what he planned to finish... Unfortunately, it wasn't anywhere near the quality of finish details I was expecting and to top it off the 2x4 I asked to be replaced had been wood glued and had saw dust glued all over it. The worst offense was a 4x4 post he cut short and then wood glued a 3" piece on top to fix it. The list of things wrong is ridiculous so I won't give you all the details (see photos.) I emailed all the photos and a list of my complaints to Steve that evening. Part of my request was that Daniel not be sent back to my house, throughout the build I had serious concerns about his abilities. At one point I watched them set a 4x4 support post in a hole, fill it with dry concrete, put water on it and poke holes with his fingers to "mix" the footing concrete. In response to my email Steve said my concerns are legitimate and a service crew would come fix it as soon as possible. A few days later I came home and found saw dust ALL OVER the deck, 1- 2x4 replaced, and numerous hammer dents and damaged boards. Everything he did was a mess and infuriating. I later found out from Steve that he had sent Daniel back to do the work...specifically like I asked him not to and I'm sure is the reason for the disastrous repair work and mess that was left. I told Steve at this point that I didn't want anyone from his company coming back. I did ask for a discount for the never ending hoops and horrible quality of work. He agreed to discount the balance left by 10% and I agreed to get them out of my hair. I am now having to repair the work that I did not want to do in the first place which is why I hired a "professional." I will never use or recommend this company to anyone.
Description of Work: I chose Quality Custom Decks to build a 12 x 16 Cedar deck in my backyard. Estimate included Pressure treated frame with cedar decking and rails, 4x4 posts set 18" in concrete, double 2x6 beams on 7' centers and 2x6 joists on 12" centers, 2 steps from the house to the deck and stairs down to the yard. The deck was to be free standing instead of using a ledger to attach the deck to the house due to structural issues with the brick on the back of my home.

They provided the lowest bid and best design for the small cedar deck that I wanted. Construction took about 4 days, with breaks for rain requiring some delays, but the finished project is beautiful and just what I wanted. Mike, the salesman, asked me lots of questions about what I wanted and how I planned to use the deck, and then completed a design on the spot that met all of my needs. Everyone involved in the project, from the office staff to the deck builders, were friendly and professional and very responsive to my needs. I would definitely use this company again and will recommend it to friends and family.

The actual crew and work done was great! I am very pleased with the end product. The BIG problem I had was with Mike the salesman. He told me he would submit all paperwork to my home owners association for approval; THREE weeks later it was still not done and I had to do it myself. I did in 5 hours what Mike failed to do in 3 weeks, there is something very wrong with that! He told me he submitted the paperwork 2 or 3 times but the HOA said he never did. I would suggest that if you use this company to submit the paperwork yourself. They finished the cover in 4 days and met my deadline by 1 day.

On 3 June 2010, I received a quote and initial design from Mike J. Since the deck project required HOA approval, Quality Custom Decks worked directly with the HOA to obtain approval. Unfortunately, thanks to the sewer easement behind my house, the approval process took a long time. Eventually, the deck was redesigned to meet HOA approval. On 16 August 2010, Miguel and a co-worker, started deck construction. They finished a few days later on the 19th. Although the process took longer than I thought it would, the deck is beautiful. The quality and workmanship is evident. Initially, Mike provided a quote for a pergola. Unfortunately, having a pergola cover the entire deck costed as much at the deck. In hindsight, I wish I had a pergola built with the deck. I should have obtained quotes from other vendors. Regardless, almost a year later, the deck is still beautiful. Note: Although Quality Custom Decks installed cedar posts for a porch swing, I was required to purchase and hang the porch swing on my own.
Description of Work: Designed and built a split level, cedar deck with iron railing and two steps. Each section of the deck was 12'x12'. Installed two 6"x6" cedar posts for a porch swing.

The work was excellent. The quality of the product and the guys did a good job. Sometimes they were punctual and sometimes they probably had other things to do. I have no real complaints because of the quality of the job done. I was really pleased with them. They were professional and they knew what they were doing. That?s the only job they did for us. I thought it was expensive at first, but I guess overall its well worth it. It's still just like new. I would use their services again in the future.

At first it was not bad at all until the salesperson choosse to completely ignore us and nobody got in touch with us to let us know what was going on until we called the complany. The people that finally came out and built the deck were very nice. However, they left a mess. There is lots of leftover wood underneath the deck and cigarette stubs all over. Also,we had some holes drilled for tiki lights and they forgot to do some of them. It took another 2 weeks for a guy to come out to fix, however, he did a very sloppy job.

Quality Custom Decks send a staff member to help us design our deck, Mike Jaskowski, designed and gave us feedback on our ideas. He gave us an estimate for the project. They call us with a starting date, they were here on time and finished the project on a timely manner. Jake Zerbe and the other carpenter were amazing, they did a beautifull job for us. We love our deck and are planing to add an arbor later. This was a very rewarding venture, we recommend this company 100%.

He did not do what he said he was going to, and the boards he used look terrible. The work is very sloppy and uneven, and I'm afraid he used off-market lumber. It's cosmetically very poor, and I'm concerned about safety. Because of the fact he didn't do what everybody else planned in the estimate, it ended up costing us $1000 more. The BBB has registered my complaint and there are others, too, to which he is unresponsive.
Description of Work: I hired him to build an entirely new deck. His estimate was much cheaper than others'. We decided to go with him. We wanted a flat deck with benches, and he was putting them in a way I didn't like. We asked him to fix this, and it took about 6 months of our weekly calls and his promises with no work. I found him at the home show, and asked him about it. He told me, "We don't use that kind of wood any more." He was supposed to get it from a chain hardware store, but he got the boards from somewhere else. I've read that CAC wood is being sold on the side. I asked him why he didn't have it cut at the hardware store, and I think it's because they won't cut this type of wood-- that's what he told me-- because it's carcinogenic. They're not allowed to sell it anymore. The work looks terrible: nails are sticking out and the cut of some boards doesn't match and sticks out, making the whole thing look funny.

Response from Quality Custom Decks
Concerning this Member, Her deck was contracted on 10/9/2004 and final work on the project was completed on 7/12/05. There were several design changes during construction and several delays on the customers end which resulted in such a long build. The Member then filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau on 2/12/06 which we responded to on 2/21/06. After several rebuttals and responses through the BBB the complaint was closed as unresolved on 3/7/06. On 2/12/08 the complaint was reopened at my request through the BBB as I was making an effort to go back and resolve any lingering issues. At this time I sent a detailed history of the job and problems to the BBB which they forwarded to the Member. The BBB got no response from her at this time and subsequently they administratively closed the complaint. The Member did say in her complaint to the BBB that she had not sealed the deck as she was advised to do because she felt it was unfinished, and I believe that this contributed to some of the problems she experienced. Beyond that, the majority of her complaint is a long speculation on whether or not we used what she refers to as "carcinogenic" lumber (no we did not by the way), and whether if we had purchased the materials at Lowes or Home Depot would they have pre-cut the lumber for us as she thought this would have been neater (no they would not have by the way). In the interim we have had no contact of any kind from the Member. I am not sure of the website she quotes where we have an 80% "poor" rating, but I would like to point out that our BBB rating is an A-. In the past 36 months we have had 10 complaints registered with the BBB all of which have been addressed. 10 complaints is still too many, but out of just under 3,000 projects that is about 99.97% satisfaction. Not exactly 20%. We have done our best to resolve this issue and regret that we could not.
