They got the required permit from the city of Plano. That took longer than expected but the city employee that had my permit was on vacation so no fault of theirs. Installation took less than a day. Everything was cleaned up and am happy with the results.

Response from Douglas Specialties
"We don't get to this list often enough I can tell. The customer complains about untimely work. The problems we had were caused by our agreeing to have him supply materials. When our crew showed up for work several times, the promised materials were not there. Well, I still had to pay the crew for the day so I scrambled to get them some paying work elsewhere. When that work required more than a day to complete, we did not come back to [Member Name Removed]'s job the next day. They expected us to be "on call". We are entirely too busy for that type of treatment. We ended the relationship when the Speiers refused to allow me on the property to get squared away with them. Life is too short. We are too busy."

First contacted them by email asking for an estimate. After no response for about a week, I called and left a message. After about another week, I called again and was able to talk to Doug, who said he'd contact Dek, his project manager, to set an appointment. When I didn't hear from him, I called again and was finally able to set an appointment. Doug was always congenial and apologetic for the delays.
Dek came and did a site survey, saying he would email me an estimate. He, too, was very congenial and gave me much more information about the job than other providers had. However, I did not receive an estimate and called Doug, who gave an off-the-cuff estimate. I also talked to Dek and, after asking what Doug estimated, he agreed that was about right. I agreed because I liked both of them and the way Dek handled the site visit. We agreed on a date.
Dek had materials shipped to the site beforehand and manually moved them because of limited access. He and his crew arrived as scheduled. He did not have a written estimate or contract and was not aware that Doug had agreed to install flashing where the carport met the house. Because of this, Dek did not have the flashing materials on hand.
Dek was very consciencious about discussing what I wanted done and how it could be done properly. He was very willing to make adjustments as needed and it was very obvious that he knew what he was doing. He took great pains to make sure all measurements were correct and the structure square. He and his crew worked fast and hard and finished, except for the flashing, early that evening. He told me it would be about 10 days before he could install the flashing because of a big job they were starting the next week. He offered to let me withold some of the payment until the job was completed. I trusted him, told him so, and paid him the full price..
After 5 weeks, I emailed Dek about the flashing and he was very apologetic about forgetting but agreed to come later in the week. However, it rained and that delayed another job, which delayed mine. After about 2 weeks, I called Dek and he said he would order the flashing right away and he emailed me a few days later saying he had it. When I hadn't heard from him in another week, I called him and left a message. When I hadn't heard from him by the next day, I called and left another message suggesting an alternative way to end the job. Dek returned that call the next day and set an appointment to install the flashing. One of his crew arrived as scheduled and finished, doing a good job. Overall, it took about 6 weeks for them to finish the job, which was over 3 months from when I first emailed asking for an estimate.
Doug and Dek are good ole boys who do a good job at a fair price but are also good reminders to get everything in writing and don't pay for the whole job until it's done.

On March 31st Mr. Davis arrived on time with his crew including his son, Deck (his nickname). They quickly went to work. They discovered that the garage was not square to the house. Mr. Davis and Deck squared the carport to the porch. Mr. Davis kept us informed throughout the day with what was happening and he answered all of our questions. We were amazed when we saw Deck walking on the steel roof panels as he installed them and how sturdy the carport was with Deck walking on it.
That evening we had a professionally built carport that was beyond our expectations and was exactly what we had wanted. It was level and square. It was very sturdy and a high quality structure. It had outstanding welds and it blended perfectly with the awning on our side porch. The carport looked great from the street as well. Mr. Davis and his crew then cleaned up all their trash and debris.
Mr. Davis then scheduled an appoinment with us for his garage door contractor, Glenn, to install the garage door and the opener. Glenn arrived on time and went right to work. A few hours later we had a working garage door with excellent quality and finish. Glenn answered all our questions and explained how to lubricate the track, spring , etc. Glenn then cleaned up all of his trash. Mr. Davis even followed up with us a few days later to make sure everything came out as we expected. It did!
Now anytime anyone comes to visit us we get many compliments on our great carport. We would definately use Carportman again!

The job was completed in two days and went exactly as described. They went to the city and got a permit and worked with the homeowner association. I am very satisfied. The owner was very interested in making the job at the time I wanted it and done in the manner I requested. I had no problem getting the approval of my homeowner association and complying with the city ordinance. This is a company I would do business with again.

Very pleased! The Carportman and his crew were wonderful to deal with. He agreed to drop by and discuss my project the next day after my initial phone call. I was not sure what I was getting myself into, but Doug and his team were very flexible and fair priced. They were able to build out a custom steal and wood structure that fit my property perfectly while remaining within my budget. I have recommended them to my business partner and they were very pleased as well!
