Description of Work: Rarely do I strongly endorse vendors. John showed up for electrical work, came back again at his own expense the same day when an installed timer had issues. He is pleasant and knowledgeable. He's the guy! I'd hire him again.

Description of Work: Although I am satisfied with the finished product (replacing railing and a step on my porch), Mr. Van Mater did not show up when scheduled. And I think his hourly charge for labor was slightly high even after the $99 for two-hour of labor special. I do not know if I will hire him again.

We originally was going to have him replace the outdoor lights after he was finished doing those we also had him repair and replace the lighting in our great room, replace faucets, replace the doorbell, fix a toilet, repair light switches, and a few other items around the house. He left each area that he worked in cleaner than it was originally.
Description of Work: Repaired and replaced indoor and outdoor lights. Replaced faucets and doorbell.

+ -1 moreoverall, he did a fine job. he really paid attention to detail and was very neat in his work. my only complaint, if you can even call it that, was that he took a little bit longer than i would have expected. i don't mean that he should have rushed by any means... we definitely wanted it done well, but at times it really did seem as if he was going at a snail's pace. but, i'd still prefer it to be that way than too quick, and sloppy. i would probably use him again if we had a big paint job.

+ -1 moreI missed the deadline by a day to schedule this painting service and when I reached out to the contractor to make some accommodation to get the single roomI needed painted, we just never could connect on timing to schedule and I wasn't to terrifically pleased with the additional cost on top of the coupon cost so I didn't pursue further. no harm nor foul on the contractors part- purely my opinion/preference.
Description of Work: I didn't use the coupon in the required time and thus did not receive the services.

I don't know if we might have received better work if I allowed him to come on his own terms. I won't use him again and I won't recommend him to anyone. I will try to hire a professional the next time around.
Description of Work: It was made clear to me that he was offering a $200 special in an effort to build up his rating on Angie's List. I purchased his services based on this (I called him prior to paying for his services). We were using Angie's List for the first time because we were tired of the sub-standard work that we were getting from everywhere else. He was offering $200 for a day's work. We needed two rooms done. One was the nursery that can't be more than 11 x 15 with two closets and large windows, and the other was a sunroom that has three walls of windows. He did an okay job in the sunroom. He didn't tape anything off and didn't fix any drywall flaws, but did an overall okay job (albeit, I could have done the same quality work). At least I don't cringe when I walk in there. My son's room, however, makes me cringe whenever I sit down to read him a bedtime story. He did a terrible job trimming the room. In spots, the previous paint shows because he didn't cut in properly, or there is paint on the baseboard because of sloppy work. It doesn't appear that he did two coats in some spots.

+ -1 moreI don’t think he was totally competent in his skilled. The walls weren’t sanded completely, there was paint on the fixtures and trim. The painting on the wall wasn’t straight when two walls come together with two different colors. He didn’t cover anything, so the floor, furniture, and bathroom fixtures has griddy grit to it and paint on it. He just doesn't seem like painting is his cup or tea. We taking paint off of things for over an hour now.

Date of work: June 11, 2012, beginning at 9:30 - 10:00 a.m. John arrived puncutally; introduced himself; and requested an overview of the painting job I had plannedHe seemed to appreciate the "state of readiness" of the kitchen.John provided his own drop cloths, painting tools and supplies; I supplied the paintPainted the kitchen and dining room, 2 coats of satin finish paint. Lovely job! I am completely satisfied with Improving Homes 4 You's work on this project. The job was completed about 4:30 pm, including cleanup.I would hire John again and can recommend him for interior painting jobs.He was pleasant, stayed on task, professional and the price for the Big Deal was great!
Description of Work: Angie's List Big Deal - A Painter for a Day for $199. Kitchen was "prepped" by myself -- removed things off counters, removed switch plates, removed pictures. + -1 moreVery nice gentleman, punctual and friendly. What we needed didn't match the Angie's list deal we bought but he worked with us to get some of it done without extra cost. I only have two complaints-- he worked 6 hours and didn't get much done. And more importantly, where he painted corners separate colors, one white and one gray, there are several places where the gray goes around the corner and onto the white. I didn't notice this before he left but I don't find it very professional that he didn't have higher standards.

+ 2 moreHe shows up on time, works the whole time he is on the job, goes out and gets anything that he doesn't already have to do the job, is professional, does beautiful work and is very cordial. We would hire him again in a minute if we needed something done. And we would recommend him without reservation. In our experience, it is rare to find a contractor of this calibre.
Description of Work: He built a platform in an attic storage space and did some other touch up repairs (such as ceiling repair and door finishes, etc.) left undone or done improperly by the builder of the home. We used him for an earlier job last year also where he did paint touch-ups and filled in a huge gap between the drywall and kitchen counter tops that the builder didn't finish. The work was beautifully done and you could never tell that it wasn't there originally.

+ 2 moreI left him with the keys and access to the home, as I was doing the remodel from a distance. I never had any problems with him creating a mess in the home. He was incredibly honest and his prices were ridiculously fair. If it were not for him, I would not have the house on the market today. He has been amazing. He has been a shining light on contractors. I have absolutely no complaints. I would hire him again in a heartbeat. His referrals, who he had found for me to do work, were equally as good. If you'd like to see the final product, the MLS number for the home is 1297616.
Description of Work: He came on board with me last December, in 2010. I had a 2600 sq. ft. home that needed to be gutted and redone. The home needed an all new kitchen, bathrooms, and everything. He redid the master bathroom. He did all the painting, electrical, structural, installation of light fixtures, and more. He did absolutely everything. I did get a referral for a plumber and electrician, Steve Brewer, that I did hire on in addition. There is very little in the home that John did not do. He did not install the hardwood floors or the tile in the bathrooms, but he did do all the prep work for everything to be installed.
