The demolition was accomplished in a timely fashion, but the items removed from the bathroom (cabinets, toilet, tub, etc.) were left on my back porch for nearly the duration of the project. David had said that he would take care of all removal, and did not request that we rent a construction skip for disposal. Much of the still-useable components removed from the bath (cabinet hardware, sink and fixtures, tub and surround, mirror, light fixtures, etc.) were given to David for his wife to re-sell, with the proceeds going to a favorite charity of hers. Despite that, he still left most of the aforementioned on our back porch until we finally insisted that he remove it, or that we would dispose of it. Not only dangerous for us, but less than professional behavior on his part. The installation of tile and tub were a bit rocky, as we were short on the amount of accent tile needed, and had to order that. David had a lot of difficulty with the plumbing for the bathtub and shower also, taking a full day to sweat the pipe properly so that it would not leak. Also, the tile job that was done was horrific. There were no spacers used between the tiles, so the grout lines vary from ½” wide where the tile meets the tub, to less than 1/8” in other places. There are tiny bits of tile on nearly every run, and the grout in the left rear corner of the tub has already cracked from the top nearly to the bottom, with gaps and separations showing in many other places. David also did not clean the tile properly after grouting, leaving traces of grout on the very expensive accent tile we used. I have had other professionals evaluate the tile job, and all have pronounced it amateurish and in dire need of replacement. This is the main reason I’ve filed the complaint against Crossroads Restoration – so that I can have a decent tile job done in my bath. The next problem was with the placement of the light fixture. David refused to measure to see where the mirror and medicine chest would be installed, and then harangued me until I told him where I wanted the light fixture. As a result, the fixture was mounted nearly 12” too high, and looks very strange. It’s so far up that the light bulbs under the covers are CLEARLY visible. I’m very unhappy with that as well, but am willing to leave it be so as to avoid having to redo the sheetrock and paint. Our next issue came with the paint. David’s work was extremely sloppy, with ceiling paint ending up on the walls, and wall paint ending up on the ceiling. He brushed it aside when I pointed it out to him, and did nothing until I’d made several requests that he fix the problem. He refused to use painter’s tape or a shield to create nice straight lines, until I got mad and insisted that he make the changes I’d asked for. When he repainted the cabinet to match the dark vanity, he did the same thing; no painter’s tape/shield to ensure a nice straight line. I had to have him redo it three times, and I think maybe the third time he used the tape. I’m still not thrilled with the look but I just lost patience over having to fight with him over every little detail. I could go on and on, but this is long enough. Suffice it to say that I’m really unhappy with the work performed by David Rose and Crossroads Restoration, and I would like reimbursement for the tile and labor so that I can have a real professional come in and do a good job. The cracks in the grout are of great concern to me, as I’m worried that water will seep into the sheetrock behind and cause mould to grow.
Description of Work: I engaged David Rose of Crossroads Restoration to remodel our guest bathroom. David gave us a bid of $3500 for the project, to include demolition, paint, drywall and tile work, fabrication of a cabinet door with glass insert, installation of tile (both floor and shower enclosure), tub, toilet, vanity, light fixture, mirror and medicine cabinet, and a pocket door that were purchased by us. We also chose and supplied all paint used. David assured us that the project would take no more than a couple of weeks, total. We agreed upon a date of 19 July 2010 to commence demolition. As things turned out, it was seven weeks before the bath was complete. This for a 6’ x 8’ bathroom. David avoided, ignored and condescended to me to make this the most unpleasant experience with a contractor that we had ever had.

Response from Crossroad Restoration
The first thing that should be considered is that the wife and not the husband who was the primary contact through all of the construction and it was her design that had to be accomplished. The materials that were installed were special ordered/picked up by her so the time frame was extended because of late arrival of the material. There were changes made (at no extra charge although are specifically mentioned in the original proposal that should be at extra cost) in the construction by her that also caused some delay. Once the materials were finally delivered the job was completed within 7 days. Some of the delay was due to change of glass installation in cabinet doors (extra) that was facilitated by a glass shop (she initiated) waiting for the pick up (by her and tinted with a material she picked up and I installed at no extra charge.) The tiles were set with 1/8” nylon spacers. The paint on the ceiling and or wall line was rectified the following day. The paint line of the cabinets was rectified the following day. There were several changes requested/insisted by her that were performed and all without any extra cost. There are several inaccuracies, fabrications, or false statements made that I want to bring to the surface: 1. It did not take a full day to sweat the plumbing (approximately 2 hours) 2. The grout lines do not vary 1/8” to ½” 3. David did not refuse to do anything requested by the member (quite the contrary) 4. The bulbs are visible but all bulbs placed vertically in a fixture above 6’ are visible 5. David did not refuse to measure where the cabinet and medicine cabinet would be installed (totally absurd) 6. David did not have to redo the line of the wall against the cabinet three times (once only) 7. The tile is installed over a Hardie Backer board system as per mfr. instructions 8. Some days I was not able to access the dwelling because of her schedule Note: I am surprised that the whole issue would be presented in this way since she is a “lawyer” (her words) and I would hope that truth would play a central part in any dispute… but apparently not. I have had many customers over the last decade and I don’t recall any that are dissatisfied… but this one.
