Showed up for the estimate on time - provided a detail on the work to be done. Showed up when he said he would and did the work over the course of four days. I appreciated that instead of rushing on the 2nd to last day to finish up in three days, he said I need time to do it right.

They did a very, very good job. The only complaint that I have is that they were very slow in doing the work, but the work they did is perfect. If you have the time and the patience I say go for it because he is really good. We had gotten other estimates and we definitely got what we paid for.

Initially good, then major disconnect when the footings for the main posts were way askew. Then getting the 'two week' job took at least two months as the 'time on the job' often amounted to a couple hours on a Friday (if we were lucky).
Response from Walker General Contracting & Remodeling
"I should have slid the deposit check back across the table when I was asked at contract signing what would happen to their project if I died. Yes, you read that right. I think dealing with these members took a year off my life anyway, and at some point I may have even prayed outloud for the good Lord to take me. I had to endure enless tirades from her, some laced with tons of profanity. As example: - and with the pacing and anger of a caged squirrel - "WHY is your crew on the job before YOU?!" Answer: "Ma'am, that's their job. You should be thanking me." Oy. She couldn't make decisions and he wasn't allowed to. A perfect storm for a great customer experience. Build furniture-grade benches to precise specifications written down by her - with a mock-up from scrap wood to make sure, I might ad - and the next day I'm told to re-do it because it isn't to their liking. Changes are fair, but I had to do so many I gave up trying to keep track for charging them...I just wanted OUT. They made it sooooo pleasant to show up every day. Small list of bizarre events: - After a two-hour marathon design session for benches, which would require ripping the 1x6 plank format in half, I was called at 7:30 the next morning by a shouting her, and a virtually silent him, letting me know they didn't feel I knew how to cut wood in half accurately. Wow, and after all these years, something divided by two, then sanded smooth on the cut edges would just flat-out stump me. - I arrived one day to see what I thought was the result of a nearby cotton wood tree blooming - white stuff on the deck. Nope. He went out and bought bags of cotton balls and rubbed them over the benches to illustrate where rough spots existed. Note to the universe: if you rub cotton balls on just about ANYTHING....it'll stick. - I was pulled aside one time and told there was a faulty plank on the upper deck. O.k., fair enough. I go with them and am looking and looking. She then tells me, "here, if you come inside, behind the glass door, and bend down, tilt your head sideways, you'll see what I'm talking about." Sweet Jesus hold me. I could go all day on this member. Perhaps the most telling event to illustrate the environment: I had a carpenter and his helper son QUIT and refuse to return to this job because of the daily manic behaviour of her. Can you imagine? In this economy...hourly guys who'd rather sit at home than work because of a client's demeanor? Me neither. I am not here to say that I am always right, that I know everything, nor am I God's gift to the trade of carpentry. But I will stand on the laurels of my prior ratings and tell everyone reading this that I would rather do my own root canal with a rusted butter knife than ever work for the likes of these people again. My father was right: I don't HAVE to take every job, no matter what the money looks like. "There's a reason they are called red flags," he added. Dads are usually right. Lesson learned."

He did an excellent job. We had storm damage and we had to replace the roof. He came in and his price was very reasonable. The reason that we joined Angie’s List in the first place was to find a roofer and we got a coupon for that. He came, did a good estimate and did a good work. He was very professional. We liked the fact that he really hands on and he just didn’t send the crew but the came and checked on it. They finished it up in less than a day which we thought was pretty amazing. We had an issue with the air-conditioning system and we don’t know that it had occurred because of the work that he stayed beyond the time that the roof was finished but he helped solve our problem with the air-conditioning which we thought was really outstanding. We weren’t sure whether something had tripped or it was because of the power drill that they were using but he made sure that it wasn’t anything related to the roofing job and it wasn’t but he took care of it anyway. We called two other guys for estimate where one guy came whose estimate was $1500 more than what Walker had quoted because we had 30years old architectural shingles which was getting pricy but he was extremely reasonable. I had no problems with him whatsoever. He sat with us and answered all questions we had.

The owner of Walker General Contracting & Remodeling Company, Bernard did a good job. He was very personable. He completed the job in a timely manner. The most important thing is that Bernie completed the job and didn’t walk away after getting money. His quality of work is great. I would use his company again in the future.

We didn't really have any set idea on the screen porch we wanted, other than we wanted to leave some part of the covered space open so we could grill. Bernie came out for the estimate and explained that we could pour a new concrete slab on level with our back doors and have it attached to our house slab. By raising the slab, it would be possible to renovate the space as a sunroom or air conditioned room in the future. All the other contractors that provided estimates wanted to use the original slab, something we were skeptical of since there were cracks all over it. On top of that, Bernie offered a much lower price than any other contractors; even with pouring the new concrete slab. He gave a good description of how he would build the screen porch and assured us that he does all the carpentry. Because we didn't have an exact design in mind, we knew it would be beneficial to have a skilled carpenter as the contractor who could help guide the design.
Bernie used a subcontractor to remove and pour the slab, and they did a good job. Once framing and construction began, the design of our new screen porch really took shape with the help of Bernie's ideas. He thoroughly explained his suggestions and why they would be best for our porch. We are very glad we went with his idea to have the siding match the house. Bernie was onsite for all the construction (except for the concrete work and some of the electrical which was also subcontracted), and usually had at least one helper with him. Since he does not have a dedicated worker, the construction took a little longer than expected, but the quality far exceeded our expectations. The finished product looks like it was part of the original design of our house. The radiant barrier installed in the roof and the ceiling fan offer some relief from the heat, but it will be nice when (if) it ever cools down and rains! We are very happy with our new porch and look forward to spending a lot of time in it.

We had him build a 24' x 16' sun room on back of house. He took care of everything from the cement slab to the roof. He pulled all the proper permits and ensured that everything was inspected per city rules. Overall the work was excellent and we could not be more pleased with the quality.

Bernie is very friendly and professional. He gave us a written quote, he helped walk us through our HOA permission and was able to start the job almost immediately after we received HOA approval. The work was done quickly and efficiently and they did an excellent job.

We've opted not to give the price for this job, in part because we had supplies. However, the labor portion was at a very reasonable cost. The job was completed quickly and capably, plus we got some tips on how to reduce roof heat with a better venting system, when we eventually re-roof. Also, Bernie's opinion on the lifetime of the roof approximated what we were told by our home inspector when we purchased the house. We had little confidence in the bigger roofing companies who, perhaps were thinking of the seller and not the buyer in their estimations. We felt Bernie was being realistic and honest with us. Another upside to Walker Construction is that it's good at many different types of projects, a one-stop general contractor. Bernie is also very personable. Now, the only downside is that sometimes it's hard to schedule, but you will always get a response, one way or another.

Mr Walker was one of five contractors from Angie's List we interviewed that we thought might be able to repair our porch, given the parameters of our location and their specialties of work. Mr Walker came to our house, carefully examined our problem, and discussed how he would approach fixing the posts and railings. He called attention to all the details of our porch's condition that other contractors had spotted, except one. His discussion was thorough and sensible, and clear to non-insiders like us. The day after his visit, he emailed a proposal including the price. Within a couple of days, My wife and I decided that Mr Walker's bid was the one we should accept. We so advised Mr Walker, and submitted the proposal to our neighborhood association. Mr Walker added a letter to the association specifying the extent of the repairs. A few weeks later, the association indicated approval of the repair proposal. Mr Walker began work with one assistant the following week, starting on Monday, 14 September 2009. The work was completed on Wednesday, the 16th.

Excellent experience, Bernie saved us from a potentially horrific event that could easily have cost us $30,000 to repair. This was an obvious emergency, and Bernie was out to our house that day and was able to install temporary support under the deck until he could get back out with the proper tools and materials to install permanent support, which he and his crew did the following Wednesday. He didn't charge us anything for the emergency work done on Saturday, and we didn't even ask him for a quote, he gained our trust and confidence quickly. They did a great job, and even replaced some additional boards in the deck that were deteriorated. They really did quite a bit of work in only about 3 hours. Bernie was very knowledgeable, final cost was very reasonable, and my deck is now solid. We talked with him about additional work we may be doing in the future (additional deck work, new roof, painting, etc.) and we?ll certainly be calling Bernie again when we are ready..

Bernie came out and gave us a bid and some suggestions on what needed to be repaired. My wife and I both thought that he was fair and honest and gave us a reasonable price. There were some delays due to getting shipped the wrong lumber and some rain, but we did not believe that those were in any way his fault. They did a great job of replacing the old deck board by board so that the deck was usable the entire time and we did not have to worry about our dogs falling through it. The finished product looks great, we happily enjoyed some morning coffee out on it this morning. Our neighbors saw his work and have had him over to bid on their deck project. UPDATE:We noticed after a few weeks that the staining of the deck was not done evenly and then after a few months noticed that parts of the sealing was coming off. I've called Bernie on several occassions and he is very pleasant and understanding and keeps promising to come out shortly to fix this, but he has not. It has been over a year and he has yet to correct this issue. This is beyond unacceptable and now our deck is discolored and scratched and will need to be sanded and totally refinished. I can not understand why he is not fixing this issue. We have been more than reasonable. I am sorry if anyone read this prior recommendation and used him.

We had a great experience with Bernie and his crew. He was very easy to work with and made us feel very comfortable. He constantly kept us updated on progress and when crews would be in the yard so we always knew exactly what to expect. He took pride in his work and wanted to make sure we had the best product possible. When we came home to find the concrete stain was not exactly the look we wanted, before I could even call him to talk about it, Bernie was calling me to let me know that they would be back out the next day to re-apply. He knew it wasn't exactly what we wanted and made sure that it was taken care of. I would highly recommend him and definitely will use him again in the future.

"This member was AWESOME to work with. Very easy going, clear in what they wanted, and trustful of my creative input and direction. It was a pleasure to add value and function to their home and if the contractors on Angie's List could file client report cards I'd give them an A straight across the board."

They did room addition. The quality of work was very good. It seemed like they look a long time for them to complete the job towards the end, because one of the workers did not do a good job, and they had to rectify it. Their pricing was fair. My overall experience with them was good.
Response from Walker General Contracting & Remodeling
"A very fair and accurate appraisal by this member. Indeed, it's always the trim-out and little details that take time, and to be honest, yes, one of my guys did not bring his A game one day while doing the trim and casing. But, as the member rightly points out, it was quickly remedied and the final product came out just right. I pride myself in knowing that every single client gets the best possible product with a fair and reasonable budget. I'm glad I could help add value to their home and would gladly work for this member again."

Bernie responded and met us quickly to examine the work, and he developed the estimate in a timely manner. We felt that the bid was reasonable for the work and proceeded forward. Some unknown condition issues that were not apparent when the project was bid turned out to drive up the price and schedule for the work, but the revised price and duration seemed fair given the circumstances. The project was delayed a few days in starting, but once underway was finished as expected. The resulting product is very good and we are very pleased with the work.

Went very well. Bernie, Jim, and Terry did an excellent job. The next time we have a project, I will definitely use Bernie again. He also remodels kitchens & bathrooms, which are both next on my list.

"WE HAD A LOT OF FUN ON THIS ONE. THIS MEMBER IS A LOVELY FAMILY AND MADE SHOWING UP EVERY DAY A PLEASURE. SETTING AND MANAGING EXPECTATIONS ALL ALONG THE WAY WAS EASED BY THEIR TRUST IN MY ABILITY TO APPLY CREATIVE LICENSE WHERE NEEDED, AND FAITH IN MY SKILLS AND THAT OF MY CREW. I'D WORK FOR THE THEM AGAIN IN A HEARBEAT."

We had some delay, first because I had to get approval from the HOA and then he had another job to finish. One of his carpenters also quit in the middle of the job with no notice, so it did take longer to finish than anticipated and some of the screens weren't installed to withstand winds and came down a short time after the job was completed. One call to Bernie and he was at my house to reinstall the screens correctly. He did the corrective work himself, quickly and at not additional charge, and everything has been fine since then. We love our screened-in patio and, when I have other work that needs to be done on the house, Bernie will be the first person that I call. The price above does not include the cost for the tile, which I purchased myself.

Bernie Walker came out to our house, took measurements, made a few suggestions and then sent us an estimate within a couple of days. When we decided to use him as our contractor, his crew came right out and had the entire project done in 3 days. Everything was done professionally, timely and on budget - no surprises. The cover looks fabulous and we are exceptionally happy with the work. Bernie was a pleasure to work with and we would definitely use him again on future projects.

We met with Bernie who listened to our requests before the project began, offered suggestions and made sure that we understood what was happening along the way. Bernie arranged for a POD to store our furniture, had the dumpster delivered, and made sure the rest of the house was protected while the house was under construction. We were very pleased with the attention to detail that Bernie had with our house. There were minor things we didnt see when some of the painting was done, but due to Bernies experience, he noticed these things and had them fixed. We were most impressed with the carpentry--we got gorgeous baseboards that we werent expecting --Bernies level of quality was more than we had asked for. We loved working with Bernie and his team. We liked Bernies personal, no nonsense approach and appreciated his honesty, candor and work ethic.

My experience with Bernie Walker was excellent. Bernie is honest, reliable, dependable and did I mention honest? Bernie responded quickly to all our requests and was always available to discuss with us any concerns we might have, answering all our questions and responding to any special requests as quickly as possible. We really enjoyed working with Bernie and will contact Bernie for any future remodeling and/or construction projects.

Bernie did a very professional job, and has a great eye for detail. We are very happy with the porch. He and his guys did everything they said they would. We were really looking for a porch that would stand out, something special, and he delivered. We negotiated many of the details together, and the price for the additional work always seemed fair. The only frustration was that it took three times longer than originally estimated, but that was largely because of the rain, we had this done in the Spring of 2007, when Austin faced record rain and flooding.
