needing some Solar screens on our house so I contacted Brad via e-mail. I received
no response so I called and left a message. About a week later after not
hearing anything back I gave it one more shot (now I wish I would have moved on
to a more reputable company) and finally got ahold of him. He came out to the
house and did an energy inspection on our home and determined not only did we
need solar screens but also additional insulation in our attic to bring it up
to code. He forgot his paperwork to write up a proper quote but assured me this
was not like him and was very embarrassed. He gave me a quote on a piece of
paper (which was fine with me) but said he would e-mail me a PDF later that
day. I never received the quote via e-mail but we decided to do the solar
screens and insulation. The solar screens were ordered and installed in a very
timely manner which I was happy about (since this was August) but the
insulation had to be done at a different time. We scheduled the day and when he
showed up he had forgot a piece of his equipment and was unable to do the
insulation so we had to keep the materials in our garage until he could come
back the next week. He came back the next week and halfway through the job
informed me that he didn’t realize how big my house was and that he didn’t have
enough material and could only finish and frac34; of the job. His words “I eyeballed it –
I guess I should have asked you the square footage.” He then told me we would
need to spend an additional $500 to finish the attic. I thought this was very
unprofessional since it was his error and lack of attention to detail. Had he
included this in our original quote we probably would have looked elsewhere to have
the insulation done. So he said they would be back Thursday or Friday that week
to finish the job. After not responding to my texts and not showing up
Thursday/Friday I informed him of my concerns and told him we did not want him
to finish the job. He never really acknowledged any of my concerns and just
told me he had left something in my attic and needed to come pick it up. That
was the last I heard of him. The solar screens are nice and the work was good
but I would not recommend this company due to their unprofessionalism.
We contacted Hill Country Solar Screens because they were on the list of approved providers by Austin Energy. The sun coming through our windows was heating up our house to the point that you could stand by a window and feel the heat from the sun. This was even with blinds that blocked the glaring sun light!
We made an appointment with Brad. He came to our house and told us about his products and gave us an estimate. We decided to start with the house sealing and solar screens. He made an appointment to come measure every window (we have a two-story house) and then he custom made screens for the east and west side of our house. The day he came out to measure he sealed-up the air leaks where the windows fit into the house.
Two days later he came and installed every screen! They fit perfectly and look very natural on our house. We could tell a difference in the temperature inside our house the next day. We were able to raise out thermostat by 2 degrees without even noticing a difference. Our electric bill dropped - which is unheard of in Austin in October!
We are so pleased with the sealing, screens and entire experience that we are going to continue to better insulate our house with the radiant barrier in the attic. We highly recommend Hill Country Solar Screens and Brad Adams!
