He did an excellent job. He sub'd out the mailbox. The individual who did it did an excellent job. Then I had him add 14" wide stone cap on my patio river limestone wall. Once again they did it for a reasonable price and did a very good job.
Description of Work: They built a mailbox and added a limestone cap on a wall around my patio.

The end results of the steps that Clayton laid was great. I am very happy with his work and would definitely recommend using him for masonry work. They took slightly longer than we planned to complete the job, but we weren't living in the house so it wasn't a big deal. That said, I had a lot of contractors working in the house at the time (I was doing a full re-model, painter, flooring, electrician, deck etc), and Clayton was the only one who would call me each morning to tell me when he'd be there which was very helpful for me to plan my days. The steps look great, the job was done at a good price and Clayton was easy to work with/ask questions - very professional. His crew cleaned the place nicely after they were done. Highly recommended for masonry jobs!
Description of Work: I recently purchased a house that is located on a steeply sloping lot, and wanted to add limestone steps to the front yard so we could walk into the house without worrying about falling. The work required removing some existing limestone ricks, and then digging up a 30 linear ft length to lay the new steps with concrete and mortar.

I was a little skeptical about Angie's List, and thought that my wife was wasting money; boy was I wrong! Clayton showed up on time, did a great job on our wall, and even cleaned up after himself. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a good mason!

Great experience. Clayton worked in 5 foot tall agave to get the job done. Not only that but noticed the brick I had provided him did not match the original brick color. So he delayed the repair in order to get the correct color brick without additional charge. Excellent service and professionalism.

Clayton did a fabulous job. We had new windows installed in brick and he put the brick back around the windows. You couldn't even tell that the house wasn't built just the way he had put it all back together. Took him about a day and a half for 5 windows with him and his assistant. We would totally use him again. The price was right as well!

Clayton and his assistant arrived on time and they worked steadily throughout the day. I don't know what time they left since I was gone each afternoon. They finished on Friday and left the area cleaner than it was before they arrived.

Clayton came over on the same day I called and gave us an estimate. He looked at the few small areas we needed fixed, gave us his recommendation and a reasonable price. We agreed and he came back the next morning and quickly and efficiently took care of all the places we pointed out. His work was very good- you couldn't even tell what had been fixed or replaced- it blended in beautifully with the old mortar. He cleaned up his supplies, and just as he was about to leave, he saw one more hole we hadn't noticed- he went back to his truck, mixed up some more mortar and filled in the hole. I really appreciated that. I would recommend him for brick and mortar repair work.

I contacted Clayton be e-mail & received a prompt response. He came out the next day to look things over & to give me some suggestions. I initially was thinking about stone rather than brick because I was told in the past that the brick would be difficult to match. Clayton was able to find a perfect match. He started the work when he said he would & he & a helper completed the work in a very timely manner. Evertyhing was put back & they did a good job of cleaning up The planter looks beautiful....I've gotten a lot of compliments on it. I hope to have Clayton come back & do some more work for us.
Description of Work: Replaced old railroad tie planter at the entryway to my house. The size was approximately 4'x10' Replaced with brick to match the house.

Our mailbox was destroyed/knocked down (by teenage boys in the neighborhood??). I called Clayton on Monday regarding this. He had one of his employees come out that day to start and it was finished by Tuesday. The numbers were put on on Wednesday. The quality of service was outstanding and the ease of the transaction as well as the punctuality was exceptional. We were very happy overall and would definitley use them again.

Very nice job, reasonable, quick. Our house is a classic central texas cream-to-salmon colored sandstone early 70s ranch home. No major cracks/problems with the walls but not the best home-done repair work done in the past (rough looking, non-matching mortar repairs), and several holes all around the house, some large enough for varmits to pass. He touched up everything with the right matching color mortar, reset some stone pieces where lookse, filled all holes securely, and then caulked where appropriate along edges of trim. He did this in a couple of hours on his one one day. Then he and folks came by to rebuild the wall, a slightly curved retaining wall a the edge/corner of our property right up at the curb/road and slightly curved as it aproaches the corner / intersection. Tight spot in the wall holds in the root system of a very large old live oak, trunk maybe three feet from the road, and sloped side of our yard which rises quickly above the road. Took them two half days to loosen/prep the area then rebuild the sandstone wall with all new mortar. Was done right, the wall line is very straight (it had been bowing out considerably before. I looks very nice now, with kind of an irregular edge along the top, kind of an intentionally partly fallen down look, only clearly not. Looks great. Very reasonable we thought for a nice job with an important piece of work. Only $1000 for the wall and all the house mortar touch up work.
Description of Work: 1. Touched up all mortar all around the house and small additional repair work here and there 2. Rebuilt a stone retaining wall, about 20 feet long and 4 feet high.

Clayton did an excellent job. He found new brick to match the 20 year old existing brick in our back patio walls (something previous contractors were unable to do). He made good suggestions for the design of our fire pit and other brick work done. I felt very confident that the job was done correctly (something I can't say for previous masonry contractors I've used).

We explained to Diehr before hiring him that we were seeking quality work without large grout gaps between stones ? up to one inch is a commonly acceptable standard in this area for uncut flagstone. We purchased about 20% more stone than required to provide ample stone selection. Diehr said that he would lay out a section for us to see before setting the stone. He did NOT. I came home from work to find that Diehr had SUB-CONTRACTED THE JOB WITHOUT OUR PRIOR KNOWLEDGE OR PERMISSION and the sub had permanently laid stone with little regard to selection or placement. There are many wide gaps between stones, an excess of small stones used, and there is grout and grout haze on many stones even after final cleaning. Water puddles in some areas where stones were set too low without a fall to provide drainage. This job is inferior to reasonable standards (see photos). It appears that Diehr took the opportunity to make a quick profit without having to do the work. Diehr was not the low bidder but was hired based solely on Angie?s List reports ? a serious mistake.

Response from Diehr Masonry
I feel I must respond to the above attack on my character and hope you will read all the reports on my company before making a judgment. (1) I have been in business in Austin for the past 26 years as a masonry contractor and consultant and have a great reputation on both Angie's list and Service Magic. (2) I bid the above job on the basis of a stone, which he decided he wanted changed and would purchase himself. He provided an irregular stone which was harder to cut and work with, making it a more time consuming job. I, however, did not charge more and the difference came out of my pocket, so no big profit here. If he had read my profile it states that I use sub-crews for larger jobs - this was not a one man job!!! Most contractors have sub-crews and most only supervise their crews. I not only supervise, but work with my tools also on the smaller jobs. (3) My foreman spoke with the home owner on several occasions and he told him he was satisfied with the work, but then told me he was not happy with anything. I made daily checks ( most times twice) and found the work very satisfactory. The crew even went back three times to try to please him, but to no avail. By the way he also didn't mention the three repair jobs on his home and mailbox that I did do myself and at NO CHARGE. (4) There are just some people you cannot please no matter how hard you try.

Clayton was very responsive to coming out and giving an estimate. Received the estimate a couple of days later and had him start the following week. Took about 4 days to complete. There were some communication issues with the workers (they told me to get a ton of stone when they thought a ton was 1,000 pounds). Also some pieces of concrete were found after the clean up, although it would have been hard to see any ways since it was in crushed granite. The guys were very thorough and even came out later when I said the vents weren't opening. They removed the vents and then set them back in. This was after all money had exchanged hands. A very good job was done.
