This company is a nightmare to deal with! This review is long just because I want everyone to know how bad they are. I will never use them again, and I highly recommend that everyone else make them the last option on your list! My heat went out on Sunday night, so I called the home warranty company and they assigned Total HVAC to come out and fix the problem. First, Total HVAC never contacted me like they were supposed to, and I had to call them to set up the appointment. They said the soonest they could come check the unit was Wednesday morning. Keep in mind the temperatures were in the low 30s to low 50s all this week (dipping to around 30 on a couple of nights), so my house was a chilly 50 degrees on average. I really didn't want to wait this long, but I had no other option since this was the company the home warranty people had chosen (I know better now). After 3 long and frigid nights, they sent a technician out on Wednesday at around noon, and he poked and prodded around for a while and finally determined that it was a bad circuit board in the furance. He said he would go get a part and would be back later to replace the board. I asked him what time I should come back to meet him, and he said it would take a couple of days to get the part so he probably wouldn't be back until the next week. So I would be left without heat, in 30 degree temperatures, for over a week. This was just unacceptable, so I called the office to see if there was anything I could do to get my claim expedited due to the weather conditions and the fact that I had already waited for 3 days for them to come check out the problem. The lady on the phone explained that they didn't have the part in stock and would have to order it which could take 2-3 days (I guess they've never heard of overnight shipping). On top of that, they refused to send a guy out once they received the part. She said they would call me to schedule another appointment to come install it once they had the part, and that would take another 2-3 days to get another tech out to finally get me heat. So, from start to finish it was going to take a week and a half to get heat back at my house (3 days for initial call, 3 days for parts, 3 days for next service). There was absolutely no sense of urgency on their part, and the lady did not care at all that it was 50 degrees in my house. This was truly an emergency situation, and they couldn't care less. I wasn't happy, and I calmly explained to her my desperate situation to no avail (yes, I was very calm and did not raise my voice or cuss or do anything that I felt would upset her and further lengthen the time this could take). But here's where it gets really interesting... After getting off the phone with Total HVAC, I called my home warranty company and they authorized me to use an out-of-network HVAC company, and this other HVAC company sent a guy out within 30 minutes of being called. He quickly diagnosed my problem and said he would have to make sure the parts store had the parts and then get to the store in time as it closed at 4:30. Turns out, the parts store had 10 of these exact circuit boards in stock which was amazing considering Total HVAC said they couldn't get one in less than 2-3 days! Unfortunately, by the time he was able to get everything authorized and cleared with the home warranty company, the parts store was closed, but the technician assured me he would be back the next morning first thing to fix it. Sure enough, he came back this morning and here I am today with a warm house again. He also fixed all the loose screws and parts that the Total HVAC guy had just left laying around after he was done. The bottom line is that it took the other company less than 24 hours to come out, diagnose the problem, get the part, and fix the problem. Total HVAC took 3 days to come out, and they were going to take another 4-5 days to fix the problem. In an emergency situation, or really any situation, this is just not acceptable and is really poor customer service. Further, they just don't care about the customer. I can't speak to their pricing, as I only had to pay a $100 deductible. However, the technician who actually did the repairs made some comments about how the previous guy had left things in a mess and had switched around some wires into the wrong position. Never use Total HVAC! This is my first Angie's List Review, and while I wanted it to be positive, I just have to be honest and give people an honest and fair assessment of my experience with this terrible company. If you do use them, expect to wait several days at a time and deal with careless individuals.
Description of Work: Came out and diagnosed a problem with my gas furnace. I was going to get them to do the repair work, but I scheduled someone else due to their lack of caring and timeliness.

Response from Total HVAC and Plumbing
[member name removed], Unfortunately for homeowners service companies like ours have to relay everything through the warranty company - not the homeowner. The warranty company controls the time line and process by having to approve and review all assessments and suggest repairs. They often like to send out other companies for second opinions, which further delays repairs. Its in our DNA to do this as quickly as possible to restore your comfort. The warranty company you used was the "go between" throughout this process, the contract explicitly explains this. We cannot make any repairs of any kind without their approval. Its our sole purpose to address situations like yours as quickly as possible, our whole model is built around that concept. As result of this situation and others like it Total-HVAC no longer works with this or any other home warranty company.

Description of Work: **I was astounded that the price for the time and what he did was soooo much. I have s downstairs apt. and the water from the kitchen is pumped up to the level of the house that the drains are on and the water was coming into the apt. It turns out that the pump was not working. He could not fix it and the next day they brought a new pump. But he kept coming out from under the house to tell me things and run up the time. He came out once and said this is really going to cost you alot. He complained that he was through for the day and would have been home by now except for my call. They fixed it fine but did not give me any paperwork on the new pump and I requested it so I would know what I had been charged for. I never got it even though I called about it and requested it. I felt I was taken advantage of, I called to talk to the manager and he did refund $255 of the $732 I was charged but said he would have to pay it. I told him how long the guy was here for and that at $127 hour, that was rediculas. He said it was overtime because of the time he came. Once before they had come about the heat and air and wanted $161 to adjust the thermostat to correct the high humidity. I said no, that was rediculas so they did it for nothing. It only took a call to get the code and a few minutes to do the thermostat in the house. I work hard for my income and I can't afford those prices.

Description of Work: They replaced an AC unit in our house. They were $1000 under the other quote that we received for the same size unit. We received good, prompt service. They wore booties over their shoes and cleaned up before leaving. We were very pleased and would do business with them in the future.

Chris and James came to our home within 45 minutes of our initial service call! They evaluated a leak that we had coming from the second floor through a light fixture on the first floor. We thought we would be pulling down drywall, but they checked it and told us it could be fixed by replacing the seal around the shower faucet! Whew!!! So glad not to be taken for major bucks! They also fixed 2 toilets that were running (both water and $$$!). The call lasted about 30 minutes, and we only paid $110!!!! We now have a new plumbing company forever!

It was an out of town call for me, so the initial trust level was important. They were very prompt and scheduled the appointment with my tenant. She said they were professional in the home. They called me on site with the problems and we discussed different solutions on what we could do now to improve the problem and some things to look forward to going forward. The billing was quick and easy and the woman who scheduled the appointment was friendly and discussed other services that i may be interested in going forward. I will definately used them again. Thanks

They were timely and we thought that they were real professional. There was a problem and they came back and to fix it so they took care of it. They have a coupon for anyone that uses Angie’s List. We got a good price, but I think there was a coupon for a 10% discount for Angie’s List customers. When we asked them about it, after they had already given us the bid, they said that they could not go any lower than this. We just thought that was curious because there was no restrictions on the coupon whatsoever.

We were very satisfied with this company. The initial estimate and final costs were the same and the person who estimated the costs made sure we knew about the Federal Government's 2011 tax credit for HVAC units. He also helped us understand what the energy efficiency ratings meant and how they applied to our situation so that we made the proper choice of unit. The installers were competent and professional. They even checked in our crawl space to make sure that our former visitors - the possum family- had not returned during the installation process. Phone calls were returned promptly during the whole process. Every person we dealt with in person or by phone was pleasant and knowledgeable.
Description of Work: Removed existing electric HVAC unit and replaced it with a new Trane electric HVAC unit. Replaced old braker box so that it was up to code requirements. Installed custom made "critter-proof " rain hood. Checked for leaks in the underhouse ductwork. Checked the operation of the unit thoroughly. Cleaned up the area after completion of installation.

A tenant called and told me the HVAC unit was not working. I had her check to see if it was frozen. It was. Ihad her turn it off to thaw then try it again. It froze again and wouldn't put out cold air. I called Total HVAC that evening and they came out the next day. They checked out the unit, took the time to show me and explain what was wrong. They told me they could fix it, but didn't know how long it would last. I have had trouble with the unit for the last 4 years and it was about 15 years old, so I asked them to replace it. They ordered it that day, came back the next day and had it in and running by lunchtime, and the old one removed and cleaned up.

I had ordered an HVAC inspection on a house my client was buying. It was scheduled for Friday 4/15/11. On that day, we were experiencing severe storms with a lot of lightening. The company called and told me they would have to reschedule due to the weather. It was too dangerous for their techs to try to work during an electrical storm. I understood completely, however, I was in a bind I had a limited number of days to get the inspection done and my time was running out. I explained my situation. Total HVAC sent a tech out on Saturday 4/16/11. He gave me a 2 hour window for his arrival. (much better than the “sometime between 8am and 4pm” you get from many companies. Not only did the tech show up on a Saturday, without it really being an emergency, he came at the earliest time of the window he had given. He found a few problems and took the time to communicate them to me and also explained them to the listing agent. He then checked to see if parts were available to repair it and gave an estimate of the costs. I feel that Total HVAC went over and beyond standard business practices in order to help me meet my deadline.

Description of Work: Our house has two hot water heaters and they are in the attic. We have been concerned about having one break and water coming through the ceiling. We thought one needed replacing, but Total HVAC found that the problem was only a simple hose that needed replacing. However, they also described a product to us called "Flood Safe" which automatically turns off the water valve to prevent water from flooding over the floor. It appears to be a great product and has given us a peace of mind about the placement of the water heaters.
