When we decided that our small home that we built 10 years ago was just too small for us and our teenage boys, we decided to take a leap of faith and look for a contractor to put an addition on our home. We were worried that we would have a terrible experience like we did with our original builder, who went way over budget, took a year longer (yes, I said a year!) than planned, and who in the end we fired and ended up finishing our home ourselves. All-in-all a nightmare for us! So suffice to say, we were very leary of "contractors," but at least a little wiser. We interviewed 3 contractors and liked Carl the best, despite his age. For us this was almost a de'ja vue because the contractor that built our house had been in a wheelchair. My husband and I looked at each other and couldn't help but laugh at ourselves that we were definently crazy, and prayed that history wasn't repeating itself. Happily this was not the case. Carl and his "boys" did a great job on our home at a very fair price. Carl stuck to his original estimate despite a couple of major unexpected hiccups. He was very professional and pleasant to work with and we couldn't be happier with our new home. Let's just say, a total opposite experience than our original build. After getting three quotes; one from a personal referral, one from Carl and one from another general contractor chosen off of Angie's List, we decided to go with Carl. Not only was the one and only contractor to answer his phone on the first call, but he was the only one that showed up when he said he would (actually even earlier but called ahead to make sure that was alright). If you've read other reviews on Carl you'll have read about his age and appearance. Yes he's older, and yes he might have some medical problems, but he's the contractor not the worker. He had his grandson measure, take photos and advise him on what needed to be done in our son's bedroom which we wanted to split into two smaller bedrooms since we're expecting another child soon. Not only did Carl have the lowest quote overall, but he was the only one that actually gave us the quote when he said he would, the other two I had to try and track down for days. Car's workers showed up bright and early, were polite, professional and never once bothered me while I was working downstairs ( I work out of my home). They did a great job on everything and it was completed in less time that the other contractors told me it would take. Carl is laid back, funny and comforting, and is just a true Southern gentleman. He always made me feel like he was proud to be my contractor and wanted to make sure everything was done right and to our approval. I trusted Carl enough to give him a key to our house to continue the work while I was out of town on business. He assured me his workers would only go where they were supposed to go and he guaranteed my house would be respected and taken care of like it was his own. Even after the work was done Carl had his electrician come back to check out a switch that wasn't working (which turned out to me my faulty ceiling fan wiring) but Carl just laughed it off and said it was no problem and was glad it was resolved. I truly can't say enough about how wonderful of an experience it was having Carl as our contractor and how pleased we are with the results. We will definitely be using him again in the future for any renovation work we have done.

I selected Carl out of about 7 contractors. Price wasn't the lowest, but not the highest. I just went with gut. Carl isn't a sporty, high-flash guy. In fact, his health seems very suspect. But I found it endearing how well he and his team works together. I never asked, but I know he's worked with his plumber, electrician, HVAC guy and everyone in between for years. He just points and shoot and they jump on it like they do it more out of respect than pay. Just a real neat dynamic to watch. I can't say he's either fast or slow. I held up most of the project with late decisions on cabinets, flooring color, exterior door selection, back spas, etc. Pricing stayed dead on with the exception of my changes that I seemed to make daily. Carl recorded all of the changes and made sure the final price didn't kill me. I thought that was very professional. By the end of this large project, my 3-year old daughter would wake up asking where Doug is - one of Carl's main guys. We left them in the house for weeks at a time unattended and I felt like the house was safer with them in it than empty while we travelled. This is an old house in a really nice Franklin area. Incompetent. this man could not even make it to the house to make an estimate. He missed 2 appointments.

He quoted me $13600. He was quick to respond and quick to provide an estimate, but he did not provide a written estimate, he just called me back with the estimate and the details. I decided that I was not going to use him only after he came out to give me the estimate and though he was a very modest man, I just didn’t think that he was going to be able to do the work, because he is an older person. He said that he had a crew who would do the work but, I didn’t think that I would need them and I just didn’t feel comfortable using him and I didn't see his crew.

They did real fine work. I am very well pleased.

Its been wonderful. They have been excellent. Dont judge him by this age, he does a great job. He has been fantastic to work with. He has gone above and beyond. I would recommend him to anyone. He finished ahead of time.

I was a little concerned when the first appointment to give a quote was missed. When I called Mr. Slate he apologized, as he was with another customer and was delayed. He met with me on the second appointment. Once his company was chosen to do the work, he began the next week and the project (2 baths completely gutted and remodeled) was completed close to the 3 weeks listed in the quote. I was out of the country during part of the project and when there were minor issues with the tile installation in one of the baths, I was not at home. When I returned and spoke with Mr. Slate, he had the tile people back to my home in 1-2 days and the issue was solved. Overall, I am very pleased with the work performed by Mr. Slate's people.

I would use them again! They were done in about 4 weeks. Anything that came up, he made good on his word. I was very pleased with the services.

Mr. Slate and his crew arrived exactly when they said they would, every day for four days. They moved all my furniture, cleaned up after themselves every day, and were extremely friendly and courteous. The work was finished a day ahead of the estimated time, and everything was done beautifully, with attention to detail. Mr. Slate was extremely kind, answering all my requests for free advice, and even making several phone calls to find the telephone number of a gentleman when I asked for the name of a general handyman. I wish all tradesmen took their work as seriously as Mr. Slate.

We had used Carl 14 years ago for a similar project. We were glad to see that he was still doing business. He still had most of the same subcontractors working with him this time. Carl's estimate was significantly less than the other estimate we had gotten. His men are all polite, respectful and responsive. Our work was completed to our specifications and on time. If you don't understand something, or someone you think should be there isn't, Carl always answers his phone and follows up! We will use Carl again as long as wants to continue working.

Carl Slate did exactly what and when he said he was going to do it. They removed a load bearing wall and installed an engineered beam 28ft support beam. They were very prompt and removed all the demolition construction debree and hauled it off. Also installed a 36" whole house fan and drop down attic stairs. All their work was done with

I can't even begin to tell you how please we are with the outcome of all the remodeling and addition that was added. Mr. Slate was professional, courteous, punctual and I must commend him on his choice of subcontractors. All of Carl's "guys" are absolutely wonderful to work with. We had plumbing moved, new plumbing installed, electric upgrade and install, moving lights, lines, etc. Taking up old flooring, installing new flooring. Re-roofing the old part of the house to match the new. Getting brick that would match the 1973 brick. Getting siding to match existing, etc. The job Carl Slate did was absolutely fabulous. Carl gave me an estimated time to finish and he's finished on time and on budget. I would highly recommend Carl Slate to anyone in need of a renovation, addition or building a new home. He's that good.

Carl is an older man (some of us are) and he directs with an eagle eye a fine crew of workmen that come from Robertson County. He has the best stable of craftsmen and is the best finish carpenter I can imagine. Carl was recommended to me by a public relations director of a museum. He is great at bookcases and built-ins. His talent is making things work in the space you have or using the space he can create. When anything needs done Carl can do it. I have recommended to many people who are thrilled with his work and his prices. He has never advertised and has no idea what a website is but I would never thing about a renovation without calling him. I am going to print him his first business cards so if you think you could use his work, call soon he'll be busier than ever.
