Description of Work: The Angie's List "Big Deal" was for a Landscaping plan and for the $99 to go toward something like $250 worth of landscaping work done on the plan. What I was hoping/expecting for was a knowledgeable and helpful landscaper who would come out and help me create a good landscaping plan based on my property, such as it is. | |What I got was a rushed, uninterested man who asked me what I wanted, was not very helpful and seemed bothered that he had to come to this very small property in a working class community. | |I've never received my landscaping plan that we agreed to, and that I paid for. I've never received another call or seen hide nor hair of that guy since. Clearly, Crenshaw Landscaping does not want my business. And they will not be getting it, nor any recommendations either. Stay far away from these guys.

Description of Work: Chris, on very short notice was able to supply a new pump for my pond. He took the dead pump and was able to get a complete warranty claim on the pump. Chris originally built the pond so he knew exactly what pump I needed He showed up at 9 pm on a Friday to install the pump and get water flowing again down the waterfall into the pond Excellent attitude and personality

Chris came out and spent non-rushed time giving me ideas and suggestions and it is evident that he is knowledgeable about gardening and landscaping. He incorporated my wishes into the garden design as well and let me know when he felt that some of my ideas wouldn't work because of size, growth spread, etc. He also made suggestions that I hadn't considered (removal of several large trees to replace them with smaller, slower-growing ones in the front yard versus trimming them, since they weren't the type of tree I really liked). When it came time to perform the work, it was done over a few days and his crew cleaned up nicely and left no damage behind. I had more work for Chris to do in the spring but, before proceeding, I wanted to make sure that the plants he had installed did indeed grow and that the severe pruning of my hedges/bushes were successful. Everything came up and came back beautifully, but I missed my window for replacing 2 trees this spring. I will definitely use Chris again for future plans.
Description of Work: I phoned Crenshaw to give me an estimate for a variety of work: severe cut-back of hedges around home as they had grown too high to safely trim, design and installation of a garden to hide electrical/telephone boxes in front yard, removal of 2 large half-dead bushes, trimming of large trees around front yard and relocation of 11 bushes to a newly installed garden area.

I called Chris to get his advice on getting grass to grow in our front yard, but he had so many good ideas about improving our landscaping and his prices seemed very reasonable, so we went ahead and did the landscaping, too. He is very knowledgeable and I felt like he was able to put together a fantastic plan for our yard that incorporated all of our favorite plants for a very fair price. I had to follow up with him twice to get a formal bid after meeting with him, but it was totally worth that little bit of extra effort on my part. He spent a lot of time discussing our options with us and was very timely in performing the work. I will definitely contact Chris when we re-do our backyard in the not-too-distant future. We've gotten tons of compliments from the neighbors!
Description of Work: Chris and his crew installed approx. 15 hydrangeas, two cherry laurels, a dogwood tree, several spirea plants, two boxwoods, and some sod. They also seeded bare spots in the lawn, trimmed numerous bushes, transplanted two large oakleaf hydrangeas, and deepened some existing trenches to resolve water run-off issues.

Don't call this guy for help with real mudslide issues. He lists engineering as an option on his business card but he clearly has no idea what he's doing. I have a hill with a previous mudslide and a semi-trailer long depression that is getting larger that will cause a large hill side to collapse soon. Instead of tackling the issue he was more concerned with raking leaves against dead logs to move water away from the area. The two engineers that came to inspect the area afterwards were shocked that he didn't recognize underground water as the main cause since it was obviously coming out of holes in the earth in the area.

When I met with [member name removed] his request was for an estimate for the repair of for hillside damage due to rain with mudslides. We discussed the effect water has on the colluvial type of soil that responsible for the slide. Colluvial soil is found in many parts of the Nashville area including the neighborhood where I grew up near Radnor Lake. The soil particles are like a stack of poker chips, if you add more soil to fill in the trench created the extra weight when saturated with rain water will cause the soil below to continue its slide. There is no economical way to repair the chasm because there was no access for equipment to divert the water away from the slide area. We discussed economical ways to use manual labor and the existing woodland vegitation and fallen trees to divert the surface water away before it had the chance to accumulate in the trench adding more weight and continuing the slide process. I evidently was not clear in my discussion that it was the WATER that caused the problem and diverting the water was the answer. My MS degree from Vanderbilt Engineering school taught me ways to problem solve difficult situations. I am not a professional practicing engineer. .

Chris came out and spent over an hour of my time walking property marking off spaces for the project I wanted,(A huge 80 ft x 40 ft tiered garden, with fencing and a shed) he was pleasant enough and said he would call soon with info and estimate. A week and half went by and I called him, he didn't even remember me , after I refreshed his mind further he said he remembered but I don't think so, how many people put in this kind of project? According to him, he never had any, anyway he played me again and said he would call and also get some paperwork to my e-mail. Guess what!? Its over a month and he never called, NADA! I don't think we're getting married any time soon. He should have been professional and just admitted it was TOO BIG for him to take on instead he lied.(Thats when you say something that isn't true or never comes to fruition)

I apologize for failing to respond in a timely manner. Our phone discussion was for raised garden beds. Our work doesn't include sheds or fences or excavation of hillsides that requires doziers or track hoes. We are a small company that can tackle regular sized home owner raised gardens in the types of back yards found around Nashville. I should have been able to decline the project after spending an un-paid hour of my time with your enthusiastic discussion of all the future project possibilities of your new farm.

One of the best experiences we've had with a contracted service provider. Did take him a bit longer to get back to me after the initial phone call but well worth the wait (I had already acquired two estimates from other companies). Very personable, intuitive, hard-working and has great co-workers. After observing our lifestyle and how we used the space, suggested a redesign that we loved but hadn't considered. He will follow your lead and/or offer great, creative ideas. Open and welcoming of follow-up calls re: caring for the plants. Knowledgeable about horticulture and a good educator.
Description of Work: Designed landscape area for around our house, collaborated on plants (we chose for him to buy and plant but he did give us the option to do it ourselves); dug up and replanted 8 mature holly trees and set up a watering system for them to aid in survival; provided education on how to care for the new plantings; fixed a drainage problem along the driveway; designed and installed new patio (hardscape).

Chris and I met to discuss my plans for general spring maintenance and some more extensive work. We spent about 30 minutes walking my property discussing needs and wants. He left assuring me I would receive a phone call with his estimate. After two weeks that phone call never came. Breaking my own rule, I decided to make a follow up call assuming he had misplaced my information. I left a voice mail on his mobile number with my return number. Again, I never received a return call. It has now been four weeks since our initial visit. My morning route takes me by Chris's personal residence everyday and I noticed that his own yard had been recently serviced. I feel there is better approach to customer service than this. I chose Crenshaw Landscaping because of the favorable remarks included on this site. Unfortunately, I wasn't given the opportunity to evaluate their work.

Make this the last review you look at. Call Chris and book him now. Seriously. He's that good. That fair. That honest. Everything you would want. Take for example our schedule. He was to start the Monday after Christmas. But the Friday before he called saying that the weather appeared to be good for the next day and asked if he could work then. Of course I said yes. So he and his crew showed up right on time and worked until well after the sun was down. (Working by the light of their bobcat at points) They were back at it early the next day (a Sunday no less) and fully completed the job. So yes, they completed what was a three-day job in only two days, and completed it before they were even scheduled to start. Chris is an honest and kind guy. I sense that his word is his bond. He shows great integrity. This is the first of several times he will be called to our house. I stand to gain nothing by speaking so highly of Chris and his crew. But he's clearly the best person we've hired to do anything for us since our arrival in Nashville. Thanks Chris!
Description of Work: Our family recently relocated from Los Angeles. Included in the family are five dogs. We were unaccustomed to the extreme amounts of mud they would track in from any of the frequent Tennessee rains. Chris and his crew provided a far better solution that I might have imagined. First, they carefully worked all of the elevations to ensure proper drainage. Most people would've overlooked that. Not Chris. Though it wasn't even discussed in the bid, he did it and did it well. Then they replanted several bushes from the dog run to another area of the yard. (Chris also did it in a very artistic manner to compliment our existing hardscape. An idea we hadn't had on our own. BUT HE DID!) Then in another area he wasn't even contracted to work on, he transformed what was a muddy slope leading to the patio, into compacted rock steps. Just incredible. He went so far above and beyond. The dogs can now go out after any rain and not bring mud back into the house. The crushed rock is soft on their paws, and their urine flows through the rock without creating a foul odor. The man's a genius. He listened to our needs and provided what will be a lasting solution.

Not only is Crenshaw Landscaping reasonable but they also provide an exceptional product. We could not be happier with the outcome! Chris and crew were at our house several hours to complete the work and made sure it was done to our satisfaction. I highly recommend anyone in the area use Crenshaw Landscaping.
Description of Work: We had two problem areas in our yard in desperate need of a clean slate. After attempting the work ourselves (and getting poison ivy), we decided to call professionals. Our holly had become unmanageable around our front porch (along with other weeds/trees/plants taking over). We also had an oval landscaped bed in the middle of our yard that contained ivy, a pine tree and a couple of dogwoods. It's hard to describe how bad this area looked without pictures. It had definitely become an eyesore for us and our neighbors. When Chris came out, he had a plan and executed it beautifully. He removed the holly from the front of our porch along with the other plants in need of removal. The holly was so big it required a bobcat and his team of workers to remove. He also took care of the oval bed in the middle of our yard by removing the pine (which had been topped by NES and was in bad shape) and reshaping the oval so that it is smaller and much more manageable. Our dogwoods now show up and look nice with the ivy below. After completing this work, he also planted grass seed for us and put hay down. This fall we're going to have him come back out and work on the bed in front of our house and also plant some trees.

Chris was great! For $90 he came to our house and spent 1.5 hours talking to us to get an idea of our likes/dislikes and explaining various features (good and bad) of our front yard. We had a strict budget, and he ensured us that he could meet our needs without exceeding the price we set. He drew a beautiful sketch for us and gave us the option of doing it ourselves of having his team do it. We opted to have him do it for $1200 total. The plants were gorgeous, and within 24 hours we had neighbors literally coming over to the house to tell us how wonderful it looks!!! It's been fairly easy to maintain (and we do NOT have green thumbs). WELL worth the price!!!
Description of Work: Our yard suffered last year during the drought, and since we had planned to re-landscape, we couldn't justify watering it. This spring we realized that last year's damage was worse that we thought. Chris ripped out the dead shrubs, replaced them with several new species, expanded the existing beds, and added another large bed. They also transplants grass that they cut out to make the beds and put it in a few bare patches that we had.
