John Gordon was recommended to us after our house was flooded r. He seemed like a savior and consistently talked a good game. Ultimately he was revealed to have consistently led us on as his crew did substandard work and well as stole from our house. He submitted bills for materials that were never delivered and was caught double billing on materials several instances. We foolishly did not have a contract--I could write (and document) pages of crime here--but the major point is--stay away from John Gordon Construction, or Robert Johns, or whatever name he might be working under. He talks a great game, he is very clever, I am only posting this as the report now because the report from the single mother on Angie's list for Spring 2012 so closely parallels our experience that it makes my physically ill--I was willing to just let it go as it dealing what he did was not worth dredging up. But if he is back in action, vulnerable clients should know to stay away. We were in a tight spot after hour house was flooded and foolishly did not get a contract on the entire job--it came together in a piecemeal fashion and we were hornswoggled before we realized it. I am surprised to see the date on the latest service as the RI contractor licensing board lists him as revoked and with an order against him on another job. So, he must be working under somebody else's ticket. The nightmare associated with him really never ends. Theft from workers, double billing, billing for supplies never purchased, shoddy work, lying, failure to complete work--you name it. But he can be a smooth talker and got the best of us.

A job that John Gordon and Ron Ultsch were given SIX WEEKS to complete and they bragged they would have done in THREE WEEKS turned into over THREE MONTHS. John himself was NEVER here. Ron was the only one here. And then most of the times...days would go by when no one would be working on the house. As the deadline approached, John began bringing in all kinds of strange men I had never met to work on the house. Some were nice. Others not so nice. One stole a trailer from our property. When we confronted him to return it or pay for it. John called us up screaming at us all kinds of obscenities and said he was going to finish up the bare minimum of what he had left on the contract and that was it!! At this point they were in the middle of switching out my sliding glass door....they said it was the wrong door and had to exchange it. They left that day and never returned...left all the siding to my house thrown on my deck and my house all exposed!! The guy he had working for him that stole the trailer kept texting my ex-husband all kind of obscene text message with racial remarks in them. He did finally return the trailer, but just dropped it off in the middle of our driveway so no one could get in the driveway. I have two storm doors still not on my house, no shower door, no stock coil on the exterior, the siding all ripped off the back of my house, a floor in the kitchen that needs to be fixed, and a list a mile long of things they NEVER completed!! He will not answer his phone or return any text messages. He was already paid in full unfortunately. Also, I would pick out product and he would send his workers over here with inferior produce totally different from what I had picked out. He is a crook and totally unprofessional. I would never, ever recommend this man to anyone!!! Don't hire him. He lies through his teeth. He kept telling me he was sick and one of his workers was sick for three weeks. The worker walked in one day and I said "how are you feeling?" The guy looked at me and said "why does everyone keep asking me that today?" I said "because John said you've been sick for three weeks like he has." He took me outside later and said "between you and me ....I haven't been sick and I don't know why he told you that! But...I'm an unemployed sheet metal worker and I need this job so don't say anything please." He lied about ordering things to me. Told me he ordered my shower door twice, which was a special order. Said he had an account and a contact with the place. I called the place to find out what was taking so long. They said they "never even heard of him...never mind him having an account with them!" It has been a CONSUMER'S NIGHTMARE AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M GOING TO DO NOW. I live on a fixed income and am a single parent...I just cry and cry and cry.
Description of Work: John Gordon and his partner Ron Ultsch were hired to come in and finish up some work that had been left undone by a previous contractor that had been fired from the job. Nothing real major. Put up some trim work, interior and exterior doors, a shower door, paint one room, put up a few light fixtures, finish up a few pieces of vinyl siding and stock coiling on the exterior, change out a sliding glass patio door (that he agreed to do because he claimed he had sold it for us and had no problem doing..the slider installed by the first contractor was the wrong type and John would make money on deal because the new slider cost less) and then minor things on the interior.

I found him to be dishonest. He substituted inferior product from what we had ordered. He grossly underestimated his cost. He completed most of it but the material he used primarily the flooring was quite inferior to what we agreed to. His estimate was different than his cost. He had some decent people working for him. He was easy to get a hold of, and he was on time. I would not use this company again.
Description of Work: He did some work in our basement.
