hardwood floor

We phoned Humble Carpet in June of 2010 to have an estimate and samples brought to the house. We chose a high quality engineered hardwood floor and got a very good price estimate from Johnny Humble. He was kind and said he would love to have the job. We were putting new flooring down in the entire main floor of an historic home. We had informed Mr. Humble that we would be able to pay in full in August so we would like to wait until then to have the job started. Mr. Humble said that he would honor the quote until then. August came and I went to the Canonsburg store to bring the deposit, which was 1/2 down. However, we were informed that the price had gone up because they were "no longer going to manufacture the flooring in China". I also chose a porcelain tile for the bathroom and small entry space in between the doors off the kitchen since thick walls created about a foot of space between them. I was told someone would call me to set up the install date, which should be within 2 or so weeks of ordering the product. The summer passed with no phone call. I finally phoned during late September and although very helpful and kind, the workers on the phone told me that they thought it had already been set up. We were called back and the week of the 12th of October was agreed upon between us. We were told it would be a 4-day job. The flooring was to be delivered on the week before install. No one called and no one showed up. We phoned and they said it would be delivered on Monday, but they were going to come on the 13th instead of the 12th because another job ran over. Now we were squashing a 4-day job into 3. The boxes were also marked as "Made in China", which was contrary to what we were told about the price change. We were asked to move all the big furniture out of the living room. I have had flooring put in 3 previous homes I designed the new interiors for and not a one had all the furniture removed. We always moved it from one side to another. I was not comfortable with this since I have antiques and a custom Hancock and Moore Chippendale Sofa, but I do not like to pick at contractors and want a job to run smoothly. Day 1: Johnny Humble was here all day to oversee the work. We had moved all furniture besides the sofa out of the middle room. The son and another crew member decided to move it out into the kitchen rather than to move it as they worked from one side to the other. They had to take a door off of its hinges to do so. Everything seemed to go smoothly this day and I retreated to the upstairs bedroom to work on the computer and stay out of the way. This was mostly prepwork with some of the flooring laid in the middle room. The crew quit at 3 or 3:30. The tile contractor worked in the bathroom and was kind enough to ask me my opinion of his work as he went. He also used a quick dry cement so that I could use the bathroom that night. He came back in the evening on his own to put the commode back in since we have only one bathroom. Day 2: Humbles eldest son was now overseeing the work. This was a day of finishing the middle room and moving to the hallway. The tile contractor grouted the bathroom this day and his work was excellent. The crew got as far as the living room, which they insisted on moving all the furniture out of this room also. Into the hallway and middle room everything went. I noticed that my sofa that was still in the kitchen (to leave room for the living room furniture in the middle room it came from) had a gouge on the top of the arm. I told this to the tile contractor who then must have relayed it to the flooring crew. This is not a scratch, it is an actual gouge with 3 pinhole p***** along it evenly spaced in the calfskin. Aside from this making me sick to my stomach, things went well and the crew quit at 3 or 3:30 again. Day 3: Humbles eldest son again was overseeing the work. The crew seemed rushed right from the start and this is where things got unacceptably messy. The tile contractor was helping do the hardwood after laying the hearth tiles, so most of his day was taken up with the wood flooring. I was told that Johnny Humble was informed about the sofa and he would "take care of it". They insisted on taking my kitchen furniture OUTSIDE on to the covered porch and even out on the uncovered area in front of the house. This included the brand new washer, stove, the older dryer, the brand new kitchen table and chair set and my antique sewing machine. I had never agreed to my furniture being put outside on an overcast day. They had placed my kitchen table right outside the door so that every time they went in and out, the side of the table was hit and stopping the heavy metal screen door. Very, very uncaring and unprofessional about my belongings. I moved it and said something to them about it. No apology, nothing. I actually had to bring my brand new kitchen chair back under cover as it began to mist outside. The crew ran out of shoe moulding and rather than going out to get more, they told me they were out of it as if it were something I should live with. Then as the day went on and it became close to quitting time, they had not gotten the door threshhold. I offered to run to Lowes, and of course, I got the wrong item. So two hours of my day were spent trying to get the correct "highboy", which, of course, no one as Lowes that I asked was familiar with the term. When I got home I was asked by Humbles eldest son what I wanted to do with the doorway to the outside. I said that tile was supposed to go there as Johnny Humble had told me that the engineered hardwood should not be placed where it may get wet. He insisted on putting wood there and said I had "Five minutes to make up your mind". I felt very pressured and said, fine, just put the wood down. They rushed through the end and Mr. Humble's son presented me with the final bill and insisted on FULL payment. I called the homeowner to the house and told him. We were very uncomfortable paying in full when we did not yet inspect the job. They rushed out, never said anything kind and were extremely unprofessional. The only worker who seemed the least bit concerned about our happiness was the tile contractor. There were a few problems noted when we did go over the job in the next few days. Baseboard in the kitchen had an area not nailed on. Front bottom piece removed from dishwasher was not put back on. Gas to dryer was not turned back on. Custom sofa was damaged and never compensated in any way Big scratch in dryer front Tile in bathroom cracked from pressure of commode after a few days. Homeowner was not happy with wood in doorway and wanted tile there as originally contracted. It took almost a MONTH of promises and no-shows for Mr. Humble to get back out replace the tile in the doorway. We were not even given any choice. We were treated flat out RUDELY as if we were a burden instead of someone who had just spent 14 thousand dollars. The tile in the bathroom was never addressed or repaired. The bottom line: The hardwood flooring is beautiful and so far seems to have been very well installed. Unfortunately, it is not worth the grief and trouble to have anything further fixed by Humble Carpet. We cannot recommend this company to anyone due to the unprofessional way the entire job was handled in so many areas. If you are a person who is willing to micromanage, then maybe this is a company you can be happy with. Thank you for reading this review.
Description of Work: Install new engineered hardwood flooring over existing subfloor on main level, 3 rooms and entrance, after removing carpeting. Install porcelain tile in bathroom and kitchen entry between doors. My review may seem long, but I wanted to include the details since this was a large job that was quite costly.
