My credit union picked (Lottery style?) Academy to handle the appraisal of my investment property as we're doing a re-fi of it. Dave from Academy called to schedule the appointment, but informed me someone else would be out to do the work - he just does the scheduling. Dave asked if I could do the following Tuesday morning, from 9-11am. I informed him the house is a rental and I would have to get the OK schedule-wise from my tenant, but we proceeded to schedule tentatively. He said if he didn't hear from me, no news was good news. I informed him that I drop my daughter off at school on Tuesday mornings at 9am, so I may be a few minutes late if I'm the first appointment. Dave said that the appraiser always calls 30 minutes prior to the appointment so I would be able to coordinate with him directly. My tenant responded to me that Tuesday from 9am-11am was fine; she would be at work. For good measure, I called Dave back to confirm Tuesday morning from 9-11am and let him know we were good. At some point (In the first or second call), I made it clear this was a rental and I don't live there, so make sure the appriaser calls 30 minutes prior, as he noted they would. Tuesday comes - took the day off work to be available for the appriaser. At 10:50am, I finally call Academy. I spoke with Jeannie who answered the phone, and asked what the status was. She told me the appraiser had already gone onsite, and since no one was home/answered the door, he left. I asked what happened to the 30 minute prior call, and she told me that was not in the instructions for the visit. She said we would have to reschedule; after I told her I took the day off work, she contacted the appraiser, who responded that he was now out of the area and we would have to reschedule. I asked to speak to a manager (I was told her name was Angela), but she wasn't around. Jeannie then told me she would have Steve Gresh, the owner of Academy, contact me. It seems silly the appraiser or office staff wouldn't take a minute of their time to call me, even at the door step, to say, "Hey, where are you? We had an appointment." This just makes more work and aggrivation for everyone! Dave called back and did apologize saying he never wrote down to have anyone call me, if we had said that on the phone. I appreciate the apology, but I didn't appreciate the "If we really said that on the phone." He made it sound on the first call that it was standard operating procedure that appraisers always call 30 minutes prior. If it's not standard - it should be - probably would save aggrivation. I rescheduled for next Tuesday, again at 9-11am. This time I did get a call - at 8:15am. The appraiser said he'd be at the house within 30 minutes, and I told him that I drop my daughter off at 9am, as I told Dave, the scheduler. He seemed put off that I wouldn't get there until after 9am (I appeared at 9:05) and it was just par for the course. Poor communication, I never heard from any manager or owner, and I still get to pay full price for the appraisal after taking two days off from work to handle this. I, unfortunately, had to use Academy as that is who the credit union assigned to me. If you get the choice, pick someone else.
