We are renovating our home, which was built in about 1900, and the shape of the house, layout and placement of current bathrooms made figuring out how to run the plumbing for the new bathrooms a challenge. Matt and his team met with us twice to discuss where to run the plumbing and give an estimate - they listened to our ideas, answered our questions and we agreed on a plan that was satisfactory. The estimate was slightly more than others we received but we decided to go with Matt largely because he was very willing to work with us to get the work done in the way we wanted it done. Matt's team has been great to work with. The team lead generally consulted with us when issues we hadn't discussed came up and made sure to call at the end of the day with an update and any questions. The work took about 2 weeks total to complete, which was what we expected. A few weeks after the job was completed, we were installing the washer and dryer and realized that the pan and emergency drain were too close to the wall and the plugs, ducting, etc., didn't fit. We called Matt and his team came out the next day to move the drain and pan at no cost.
Description of Work: Matt's team did the rough-in plumbing work for 2 full bathrooms and removed the leaky plumbing for a half-bath. The rough-in plumbing work included washer-dryer hook-ups.

We had a gas fireplace that we wanted installed; I could have done it myself, but it would have taken at least 4 hours from start to finish, so I called to get estimates. Two workers showed up when they said they would; they gave me an hour window. They called to say they were going to be at my house within 15 minutes and they were. They were very respectful: they wore covers over their shoes so they didn't get my house muddy. They also vacuumed and kept the entire work area clean. The job was done in about an hour. I will definitely call them again when I have plumbing work
Description of Work: When we recently moved into our house, we wanted to replace the old existing gas fireplace with a better more efficient one. I went to a local home improvement store and bought one, but didn't want to install it myself. They removed the old gas fireplace and replaced the line in and installed the one I bought.

We had this work done in 3 phases. The first job - cleaning and re-routing drains went very well. Matt came out and looked at the job, gave us a very reasonable quote, advised me on ways to prep the pipes that would immediately help our problem until the work could actually be done, scheduled the work in a timely and convenient fashion, and did a great job on the actual work. During this work we discovered the collapsing sewer / drainage lines. This resulted in him suggesting that he only do a portion of the originally planned job, as certain work would be duplicated when the big job was finally done, and adjusted our bill to reflect the change. Now phase 2 - this turned into a huge project. Matt prepped us for what it would entail, and projected completion in 5 - 7 days. The job was much more extensive than planned, and took about 9 days to complete. During this entire time the service was great, and the care paid to our home was outstanding. They had to rip up our basement floor to get to the pipes that were 2 - 4 feet deep in places. They took the time to move and protect all of our boxes (recently moved in) and furniture. They worked late and weekend days. They kept our water supply available throughout the process except for a brief time period when the new pipe was actually laid, and they coordinated that activity for when it would be convenient to our daily schedule. Matt kept me informed through the entire process. Once done, they repaired the floor, cleaned everything, and the original estimate was presented as the final bill even thought I knew the work was more extensive (ie, pipes deeper) then they expected. The team was always punctual, and everyone was courteous. Now phase 3 - after all of that, the next thing that happened was interior leaking pipes. Since they had cleaned the pipes a few weeks prior, there was concern that some damage may have occurred to the old pipes causing the leak. Matt sent a crew immediately, who identified that the problem was actually the radiator pipes, not the plumbing. They actually did a lot of work for the heating service by exposing the pipes, and expressed a willingness to coordinate with the heating service if any of the bathroom appliances had to be moved to get to the radiator system. Their service was outstanding, and we will be using them for all of our future plumbing needs - which there will be in this old house!
Description of Work: We have used Matt Mertz Plumbing for multiple services. We moved to Pittsburgh recently, and have a > 90 year old home. Services included:1) Drain cleaning - interior and exterior; 2) re-routing an exterior drain; 3) repaiting drain pipe cracks / leaks; and 4) the big one - completely replacing our home sewerage / drainage system due to old collapsing cast iron pipes.

My hot water heater stopped working of course just before Thanksgiving. Burrr. I contacted our original plumber who said he couldn't handle the call. He did refer me to another company, who then referred me to another, all three saying they couldn't handle the call due to the holiday week. Must be a built in mechanism for water heaters to break before major events. I then tried Matt-Mertz for the first time knowing they were local. Within an hour of my 900AM initial call and voice message, Lisa called me back first apologizing for not returning the call right away. After getting my information, she called right back to say a repair person could be at my house by 200PM, THE SAME DAY. The repairman showed up as promised and by 400PM I had hot water. I did not replace the tank which a new one at Lowes' cost $1450.00 before installation. So for $335 I got repair parts, heating elements and thermostats, and the labor to do the work, again all in one day. A really nice experience after contemplating a potentially disastorous holiday week. Thumbs up to Matt Mertz and his staff. They have earned a lifelong customer.
Description of Work: My electric hot water heater stopped working. Initially it started to generate some very hot water and then the next day it quit heating.

Excellent service from start to finish.
Description of Work: We had two downspout line repairs that were creating a water back up in our garage and storage area in our basement. They excavated from locations in the yeard and cleaned out any debris from gravel pits. They ran a new overflow/trunk line through the yard, catching exisitng front spout and ran it otthe the front hillside. The had to backfill the ditch and haul away debris, install topsoil and reseed the lawn. This company is top-notch in every way. There were no surprises, and we knew exactly what the cost was going to be prior to the work being done. I highly recommend this company!

I scheduled an appointment to have them take a look at a toilet that I was suspecting was leaking, because there was visible water damage to the ceiling of the room below the bathroom under the toilet. The plumber came out inspected the toilet and suspected that the only issue was that the wax ring was bad. He removed the toilet and the wax ring was bad, so he replaced the ring and then reseated the toilet. He tested the toilet and everything seemed fine. That evening, I went into the room below the bathroom and discovered that now the ceiling was dripping water onto the floor and the water spot had doubled in size. I went up to the bathroom and saw a lot of water on the floor. I was able to turn off the water to the toilet and drain it and that seemed to stop the dripping. I quickly called Matt Mertz plumbing (after 9:00 PM), left a message, and had a response within five minutes that a plumber would be out the following morning to address the situation. The same plumber came out and he inspected the work and determined that the toilet was cracked (it appeared that a previous owner of the house tried to seal it with a foam type substance and hid the crack). He pealed back more of the foam and discovered the toilet had a two inch on the underside of the bowl. Replacing the ring the previous day must have loosened the foam and exposed the crack. They gave me some options for a replacement toilet and also gave me a discount on the replacement for the trouble. Overall, I was happy that they responded quickly to my dilemma and resolved the issue in a reasonable and timely manner.
Description of Work: Came out three times to fix and repair a broken toilet.

Tom, who had been to my house before ( replaced kitchen faucet and repaired leaking pipe from toilet ) redid the pipes that a family member had done completely wrong. The job was done in a timely manner and Tom explained to me what needed to be done as well as to how he would replace the pipes. He did a beautiful job making the space in my basement more useful . Also I have better pressure when flushing my toilet ; something he got a laugh out of my exclaims of "WOW" each time I flushed the toilet. I've had 2 other plumbers in my house in the past 11 years. Matt Mertz Plumbing will be the ONLY one I will use from now on.

Description of Work: They installed a new bathroom toilet and sink. They also fixed a smashed downspout and underground pipe that carries the water away. They declined to fix the gas line issue saying they don't do gas lines. Overall, quite a great job and I'll get the gas company to fix the line!

Hot water tank started leaking in the morning. I called Mertz Plumbing and they were able to come out later that day. They were very prompt and very professional. Even showed up early. The hot water tank is in an awkward place in our house. It's in an upstairs closet. But he took great care to make sure not to make a mess taking it out. I'm very happy with the new hot water tank.

I called Matt Mertz Plumbing on a Friday at 4:30 to have them come out and give me an estimate. Being so late on a Friday, I honestly didn't expect to hear from them until Monday, but Matt called me at 6:30 Friday evening and set up an appointment for Saturday, the very next day! Matt was on time for the estimate, was very professional and thorough, he emailed me the estimate on Sunday and I called Monday to have the work scheduled. The workers came out on Thursday Oct. 18th, they were on time, worked quickly and professionally. They had all work completed within 3 hours. I am very happy with the quality of work received and the professionalism of Matt Mertz Plumbing!
Description of Work: I am adding a half-bath in the basement. I had Matt Mertz Plumbing come out to do the rough plumbing. They added supply lines and drain line for a new sink, and moved the existing toilet supply line to a new location. They also replaced the p-trap and drain for my laundry tub, which was not on the estimate and they did not charge me for it!!

Great experience! Matt initially did my camera test for my house inspection. It was only $150 and I heard through word of mouth he did good work so I hired him. Upon completion fo the inspection we found that the trap and drain were corroded and we were unable to get through them. The job to replace them would cost approx. $3900. I took that cost of repair to mitigation with the sellers prior to closing. After all the negotiating was done, Matt saved me $3500 on my new house! At the end of the job I opted to get my lines flushed since we had the pipes open. It was an additional $800, but it gave me some peace of mind. No complaints, great crew, on time and very professional. Money well spent.

Start to finish, Matt Mertz is professional in every way. Highly recommended.
Description of Work: My daughter's water heater was leaking and I referred her to Matt Mertz for replacement. The day she called they had someone at her home to verify if she really needed a new heater or if her current one could be repaired. That alone was a very professional and ethical behavior. As it turned out she did need a new water heater. Because of the late hour, supply companies were closing for the day. So as not to inconvenience my daughter and installing the new heater the following day, one of the ladies from their office delivered the new water heater to the residence for immediate installation. The employees were courteous and professional and removed all deribs and cleaned everything before they left. Once the water heater was installed it was discovered she needed an additional item to the heater (I cannot recall what it was exactly) which brought the total amount about $165 higher than originally quoted but my daughter was happy with the service and has had no problems since the installation. I would highly recommend Matt Mertz.

I realized we had a bigger plumbing issue than I thought on Saturday night when raw sewage was evident on my basement floor. After a more detailed look, it appeared the sewage was coming out of the laundry tub sink, which resulted in it overflowing on to the floor and into our washing machine (the drain hose was positioned in such a way that it allowed the water to drain into the machine). Called Mertz plumbing on Sunday morning after reading Angie's list reviews and Matt answered the phone. He was very polite and responsive and diagnosed the problem as a clogged sewer drain based on my description. He offered to send someone out but explained he would need to charge a higher fee because it was Sunday and if I could wait until Monday, he could send someone over to do a basic sewer drain cleaning for $100 (an Angie's list special). He instructed me to be careful with the kitchen sink as it would drain into the same system and cause more sewage overflow. He was right. I didn't tell my wife right away and the results were as he described they would be. He called me back within 10 minutes to confirm an approximate time when someone would get there (3pm-4pm) and I asked for them to call me 30 minutes before their arrival so I could leave work and get there on time. Phil called me 30 minutes before his arrival and was right on time (3:10pm). He introduced himself and put protective covers on his shoes before entering the house. He quickly diagnosed the problem, found the main clean-out, told me what he was going to do and what the "worst case scenario" could be if it wasn't just a clog. He asked to use our basement door to get his equipment in/out instead of going through the house, and then cleared all of our stuff out of his way in preparation for the nasty work ahead. And it was nasty. Phil was great. He asked if there were any cats he needed to be aware of so as not to let them escape out the open basement door and he even offered to help my wife carry the groceries when she came home and he was in the truck getting supplies. He worked for about an hour to clean the drain which apparently was very clogged. I asked a few other plumbing questions while he was there and he offered great advice on how to fix it myself or what to ask/look for if another plumber did the work. I was very pleased with the entire experience and would definitely use them again.

The appointment was scheduled for 12:00 pm.two days in advance. No one called prior to the appt day for directions or confirmation. On the day of the appointment, the plumber and company called my phone at 11:13 a.m. (I was in the shower.) When I realized I missed the call, I called them back immediately (ONLY 15 MINUTES from the time of the missed call!). I was informed by the office that the plumber moved on to the next job, and that he'd come to my home after that job was completed. I asked how long that job would take, and I was informed it could be up to 1.5 hours. I have two young children and a very hectic schedule, and I don't have time to wait around for an appointment that should have been honored unless otherwise specified. Perhaps they need to pre confirm before the day of the appointment, and assume it's a go unless they hear from the homeowner. Good for them that they are busy enough to just move on to the next guy. I decided to do them same and went with another company.
Description of Work: None. I cancelled the appointment and moved on to another plumber.

Response from Matt Mertz Plumbing Trenchless Sewer Repair Expert
When initially making the appointment, we informed the customer we will call thirty minutes prior to arriving at her home and informed her that we do not come to her home unless we speak with her. At Matt Mertz Plumbing, we have technology in our service trucks and GPS to allow us to find the customers home. The customer was called by our plumber and then our office staff (whom left a voice mail)to see if she would be home. The customer did not return call until a significant amount of time later. Do to no returned call, we went to our next appointment. Knowing that a plumber would be arriving to the home shortly, we feel the customer should of prepared her day a little bit better. The customer should of not been in the shower when she knew we would be calling her to come to her home. Its ironic that someone can rate our services since she has never used our company. We have over 200 positive reviews. We have never had a grade lower than a B on service that we complete.

I called for an "emergency" repair on a Saturday morning after we noticed a leak coming from a stacked PVC waste pipe in our basement. They were responsive and able to get to the house in about 2 hours. They patched the holes in the pipe which were causing the leak. Since they were there, I also had them replace the wax ring in our upstairs toilet, which was also leaking slightly.

We bought a gas fireplace. We already had a frame for the fireplace made by previous owners of the house. It was all marble and very difficult to drill through. We had several options but were not sure which one would be better. Matt himself came in for an estimate. He was very nice, understood the problem and suggested that we might want to do some of the drilling ourselves in order to cut the cost since they charge per hour. He also generously advised us on another small plumbing issue in the bathroom. We drilled the hole ourselves and then called Matt to schedule the appointment. It was scheduled for the following week. Another two guys came in. They were more than one hour late which was inconvenient since it was a work day but they called and apologized. Another minor inconvenience was that the two guys did not wear the foot covers unlike Matt. I have hardwood floors and colorful rugs and they did not hesitate to just come in even though it was raining outside. Other than that their work was very professional. They worked very efficiently, keeping the cost down. They left the area nice and clean, nicely anchored the flexible gas pipe and even assembled the fireplace logs for me. I would definitely recommend this contractor for your plumbing issues.

We contacted Matt Mertz Plumbing approx. 2 weeks ago to schedule the replacement of our corroded leaky laundry basin faucet and an old thermal expansion tank. Since the faucet was connected to several water line pipes we thought it best to have a professional do the job. And what a professional we selected! Hunter from Matt Mertz Plumbing arrived to perform our work. He was extremely thorough and explained exactly what needed to be done and the approximate length of time it would take to perform the work. Matt Mertz Plumbing's hourly rate was $95.00 which we felt was extremely reasonable. Hunter replaced the laundry basin faucet as well as the old thermal expansion tank in our laundry room in about an hour's time - he was extremely neat and tidy unlike some repairmen/contractors we've worked with over the years. I cannot say enough good things about this young man and would not hesitate to call upon this company for any plumbing repairs that may crop up!

I was a brand new customer. They were prompt in calling me back. Detailed and clear in explaining the problem, which was a pipe leaking under the sink when the dishwasher ran. They cleaned out the pipe and replaced it. I was out of state and had to pay by phone. They called and didn't get me for 1 day. They only called once. I called the next day and gave the card information. They had written down wrong. After 2 days they called and told me they were not able to process - the voicemail was not angry, upset, irritated, and did not put any blame on me. Now, I know this should be expected but it doesn't always happen. This company beleives in good honest service and great customer service as well. I would use them again Definitely!
Description of Work: Replace a pipe under the sink in the kitchen where the dishwasher drains through.

Matt first came out to scope our downspouts to confirm that they were blocked (thereby causing water to build up at the foundation). My plan was to run a new drain line from the front of the house to the end of the backyard and over a hill. In total, the trench would need to be about 80 feet in length (I believe). Matt and his guys dug the trench by hand in the front yard and then excavated the remainder of the trench through the back yard. They worked very efficiently. Once they laid the PVC pipe, they backfilled the trench, put down top soil and spread grass seed. (It has already grown back.) I was thoroughly impressed with their operation. In addition to digging the trench and installing the new pipe, Matt fixed a broken sewer vent and plugged the old drainage pipes for free. Matt Mertz Plumbing is a very professional and dedicated organization. Matt is a no-non-sense kind of guy. He tells you what the job will take and he does it right. He did exactly what he said he would do, and we are grateful for that. It is worth mentioning that his crew was also very professional. It is rare to find a contractor who takes pride in his work in this day and age. So it was refreshing and comforting to know that we could trust Matt and the work his crew did. Thank you, Matt for being fair and professional.
Description of Work: Matt Mertz Plumbing dug a trench in our yard in order to run a new drain pipe for our downspouts, two of which were damaged. Rain was seeping into our foundation walls because water was not being routed away from the house.
