tOur basement leaked really bad and had a horrible mold problem. They came in did a estimate and worked with us on our budget. They called to set up a appointment and came out five min early. Now the crew did not look very professional. They looked like some people off the street. They played there music to loud but that was only during a lunch break. They ran into a problem while doing our waterproofing, fixed it, and did not charge us extra. They did a great job however. They installed a sump pump, cut out a trench in the basement and concreted it. Then they sprayed the mold and installed a commercial dehumidifier. The work was done on time and it was done right. I would use them again. they started at 7 am and were done by 2. they cleaned up after themselves and the basement looks wonderful.
Description of Work: Removed mold, installed a dehumidifier that drains outside, ran a line for the sump pump to drain, and installed a sump pump, waterproofed the foundation.

I did think the price was a little pricy especially since they do not clean up. They do not make the dry wall back they leave it as a pit hole. They should be billed for what they tear down or at least have a setup where someone else would come to do it for me. They were not perfect as I would like but they were good. I would look around. It was not that I would not use them but I would find someone a little bit better price wise and not taking the short cut of having it put in my front yard where it was causing me a lot of grief.
Description of Work: I used Thompson's Basement Waterproofing to rip out my entire wall and dug through. They made a thing like a sump pump thing and made it go out. They also water proofed the wall so that no more water would come in the basement.

Great company, I can highly recommend them. The price they quoted was several thousand dollars below other quotes I had received, but due to their good angie's list reputation I decided to let them a go ahead. Their sales tactic was also a lot less pushy than other companies I worked with, especially Mid Atlantic Waterproofing was horrible, stay away from them. The workers showed up on the agreed time and date. Unfortunately, the equipment they brought was not suited to be used in our crawl space, so they had to go to home depot and buy some more, which delayed the start of the work by several hours. Once they started, they were working hard and finished as agreed on time. I am still waiting for a big rain storm to test the system, but I have no reason to believe that it wouldn't work, looks like they knew what they were doing. Company also gives lifetime warranty on their work. The only thing that could have been done better in my opinion is the installation of the exhaust pipe for the sump pump, but it's acceptable. Since it was already dark when the workers left, cleanup outside was not as perfect as I had hoped for, specifically they left a lot of concrete stains on my driveway and walkway. I was hoping the rain would wash them away, but after a couple of weeks I realized the stains were there to stay. So I called the company two months after they completed the work and told them about the stain, and without any hassle they agreed to come by next week and clean them up. Somebody actually came a week later and spent several hours outside removing concrete stains from my driveway and walkway. Overall, couldn't be happier.

The entire crew was very professional - and hard working. I don't think I've ever seen so many people working so hard for 2 and a half days straight. I'm very satisfied with the work and highly recommend Thompson's.
Description of Work: Thompson's installed a french drain and 2 sump pumps in my basement. I was impressed with them from start to finish - beginning with the estimate I received from Eva who was just wonderful. She was very friendly, informative, down to earth and just a delight to work with. I had gotten 2 other estimates and the prices were much higher. When the crew showed up to do the work, they were professional, polite and REALLY hard working.

Our experience with Thompson's must be considered in two distinct phases--(1) the sales job and (2) the installation. No offence to car salesmen, but the sales pitch was loaded with all the gamesmanship of buying a car: inflated sticker price, pressure to buy today (price concessions are for "today only"), attempted upsell of commercial dehumidifier, good cop/ bad cop, "let me talk to the manager and see if he'll take your offer"...and probably a few gimmicks I didn't recognize. The first sales visit ended badly with the salesman storming out of our home as if insulted by my price target. At the company's request I allowed a second salesman into my home weeks later and we negotiated a price that was 55 percent of the sticker price. C'mon, Thompson's! When the installers came I braced for corner cutting and to be nickel and dimed for upgrades "not included" in the contract. My fears were unfounded. The crew arrived early; the foreman and I worked out details of pit placement and discharge outlet locations. The crew taped down coverings to protect our floors between the entry door and the basement. Then they got right to work. Occasionally another crew would stop by for 20-30 minutes for reasons unknown to me. Perhaps that's the nature of this kind of work. In any case the comings and goings of other crews had no effect on our job. The workers stayed busy and cleaned up the site at end of day. They finished midday on day two and left our home dusty (as we expected) but otherwise orderly. I monitored the work at each step and it appeared to this layman to be accomplished as promised. It looks like a good system--now we're waiting for heavy rain to test it. Thompson's uses a lifetime warranty as a selling point, but for some reason neither the salesman nor the installer allowed me to read the terms of the lifetime warranty. Supposedly it will be mailed to me soon, but I haven't much leverage at this point if the warranty is full of loopholes.

Seems like it is working correctly now
Description of Work: Thompson's did a full perimeter french drain with 2 sump pump holes. However, after completing, we still ended up getting water. Further investigation showed an old, covered up drain in the middle of the floor. They had to come back 4 times after the initial work, but everything seems good now.

Arrived on time for appointment for estimate, performed inspection survey and explained waterproofing system in detail, answered questions, provided a competitive price and a technologically superior solution. Crew came out as scheduled, worked very hard under difficult conditions and generally left a very high quality finished product. System has turned a chronically wet basement completely dry of moisture for 6 months. Please note, this is important, this company does the work themselves and does not transfer the contract to other contractors. They also offer a lifetime transferrable warrranty on the system.

This episode is best forgotten - it pains me to recount my experience with Thompson. It started with the high pressure sales pitch - watch out for the "I have a crew idle next Monday and will give you a good deal if we do your work then" gimmick. A crew of about 4 kids, ages no more than 25, show up and make a disaster of the basement. Tore up walls, stairs, floor - patched the floor poorly, did nothing about walls and stairs. Then the problems began - sump pump installation had a problem which they recognized but could not figure out how to fix. As a result, the basement flooded twice with about 8" of water each time. Thompson denied responsibility. This is an abbreviated version of the events. Like I said, it was a painful experience. I would never, ever suggest to anyone that they use this company. FOLLOW UP - After posting the above review I was contacted by a management representative from Thompson. He listened to my complaints about the job they did for me and he acknowledged that there were some aspects of the job they could have done better. I acknowledged that the ultimate cause of the flooding in my basement was due to partial blockage of the discharge line - a problem that was not caused by or intended to be fixed by Thompson. After speaking with this Thompson rep, I wanted to amend this review to say that I now believe Thompson does care about their work and their customers. I also wanted to acknowledge that, after finding and fixing the blockage, my basement has been dry ever since. I would likely use Thompson again if there should be an issue with water in the basement.

It hasn't been raining a lot right now, so I really haven't had a chance to check out the quality of work in terms of whether it is waterproofed after the rain. There was a bit of an episode during the installation, but so far overall I think they are quite professional. I haven’t really tested the system. I think their price is competitive. I would use them again in the future.

Water had seeped through the basement foundation floor. I had a pump it. Thompson's dug a trench across the middle of the floor where the floor had cracked. They hooked this trench with another dug along the wall to meet the sump pit. They rebuit the pit better than it was and installed a sum pit. They did not try to oversell...a pump bigger than I would need. In addition, they hooked my air conditioning water run off to the pit. They ran a pipe to exit the pit collection to my outside drainage. I panicked a month or so later when I found slight puddles in the basement near the corners. The individuals came out at no charge and showed me the slight cracks along the seam in a wall that were causing it. They said the problem was not serious and could easily remedied with some Quickrete.

We had 2 guys before him that gave estimates, but the Thompson salesman was more accurate. They disputed the materials that someone else would use and how theirs was better. He had some of their tubing material with him and showed me why it was better. Their price was a little higher, but since they were more clear on answering our questions, we set it up. The crew was personable and on time. They promised dust free, and it was! 6 guys were here for 2 days. I had one concern about a charge that I wasn't expecting. I didn't know that the paneling and insulation was suppose to be removed in preparation for them. I took it up with the owner, and he worked with me on my requested refund on the hidden charge. The contract just said to clear the area, so I removed furniture and frames on walls. Otherwise, they did everything that they said they would do, and I am pleased with the results. I would say to make sure you ask every question you can think of to the salesman, to make sure you understand the whole process.

I would recommend them. They were easy to work with even when I had an issue with my check (accidentally moved monies from Checking to Savings instead of vice versa). Even with that they were still kind and the issue was resolved quickly.
Description of Work: Our problem was ground and surface water leaking through our 60 year old poured concrete basement walls. Our area received significant water in the fall of 2011 and even though we weren't in the flood zone, the ground was too saturated and had to go somewhere. Without a sump pump we were using buckets and a small water pump to pull the water out. So, we received quotes from several different companies ranging from 5000-10,000 for the same work performed. We have about 1100 sq ft house, I forget the actual square footage of the outside walls of the basement. Trenches were dug along all outside walls (jack-hammered through the concrete floor) piping was laid on an incline towards our 2 newly installed sump pumps. There is a "waffle" like plastic that is bent against the wall so that if any water penetrates the walls in the future it will fall behind the waffle and into the piping to be pumped right back outside. They tapped our sump pump outlets right into our french drain system which empties into the ditch outside our house. The workers were polite, informative and quick! The work was performed sooner than expected. They removed the rubble, but as with jackhammering concrete you will have a nice layer of dust. (This was explained to us prior and understood). So prepare yourself with a wet/dry vac prepared to get the fine dust left behind.

the guys worked very hard and the job was done in less time than estimated. so far my only disappointment was they didn't clean up their construction dirt, after we get our house cleaned we'll be OK. I understand that construction work below and behind concrete doesn't have to be 'pretty', but i would have been happier if they had at least tried to clean up the debris. I was contacted by the service manager and he strongly apologized and offered to come out and clean our house. He assured me this crew will be told that this can not happen again! He reminded me of their warranty and restated that we can call them anytime if there ever is a problem with our system. I would choose Thompson's again because i did, and still do, believe the system they install is superior to what several other companies tried to sell us.

After recently buying our home, we were told we needed to have the basement waterproofed. We had three estimates and after discussing the pros and cons of each company, decided to go with Thompson's based on their price, but most off all, their vast knowledge of the problem, solution and seemingly professional demeanor. However that professional manner was short lived once the job started. We were told by the salesman that permits were not usually needed for this work. Additionally, the salesman told us we needed to permanently close off our crawl space vents. Seeing as though this whole project was new and uncharted territory for my husband and I, we trusted in Thompson's experience. The week our job was supposed to start, I was getting cold feet and decided to call the municipality to confirm permits were not necessary and we were ok to seal off the vents. To my surprise, it was quite the contrary. Not only did we need a building permit, but a plumbing permit as well AND sealing off the vents was not up to code. Annoyed and now very nervous, I called Thompson's. At first he was very helpful with trying to rush along the permits to start work on time. I was informed by Thompson's that because the permits were applied for, the town gave them permission to start the work without actually having them in hand. He assured me the only way to fully ensure no moisture in the basement was to seal off the vents. 2 days into the job (that was only supposed to last 2-3 days), I called the town to see when the inspector would be out to OK the job so they could finish cementing the basement. The inspector was adamant that Thompson's was not to have started the work without having the permits in hand and we were ABSOLUTELY NOT to close off the vents due to code specificationa. After many phone calls back and forth to Thompson's, we were informed they would not be back to finish the job on day 3 because the town told them they couldn't continue without permits. It was at this point I first asked to speak with Mr. Thompson regarding my dissatisfaction with this experience. I was told he'd call me the next day....he didn't. The fact they wouldn't be back on day 3 to finish the job actually worked out better for me since I had a major meeting at work and had told the guys if they were coming on day 3, it would need to be after 12 noon. As I am walking out my door at 8:30 AM, I get a call from the Thiompson's crew saying they would be at my house in 15 minutes to pick up tools to go finish a job somewhere else. LIVID, I call Thompson's and was told to "just tell the guys they can't come then." Had I known that was an option after they drove quite a ways (almost 2 hours!) to my home, I would have. In any event, I end up missing a major meeting. It was at this point, I asked to have Mr. Thompson call me for a second time, since this job was not only inconveniencing me personally (going to take much longer that the original 2-3 days) but now professionally too. I never heard from Mr. Thompson. Now almost 3 weeks later, our job is complete (with an added bonus of a hand smear of cement down our painted basement walls). I will give Thompson's credit in that the inspector said their work looked good. However the hassle, stress, inconvenience, and overall annoyance of this job was hardly worth it. While they did give us small a discount after we yet again expressed our disappointment with their company, it was little consolation after 3 weeks of stress. I once again mentioned (for a 3rd time!) I would like to speak with Mr. Thompson regarding my experience, and again, have yet to hear back. I understand through talking with the crew doing the work that Mr. Thompson and his son may not actually manage the day to day operations of this company, which is why I so persistently wanted to reach out to him. I know if I owned a business and trusted someone else to represent me in running it, I would want to know if I had customers as unhappy as we were. I will continue to try to reach Mr. Thompson or his son and in the meantime hope the warranty paperwork shows up. ************************************** UPDATE: Once I posted this I did hear back from Mr. Thompson and he assured me he was not aware I had been trying to get a hold of him, otherwiswe he would have called me back. I did express my dissatisfaction and he was very apologetic. Since our initial phone call, I have heard back from another manager on a couple different occassions to see if there is anything they can do to fix the situation. Unfortunately, what's done is done. Despite the fact my experience was negative, I do feel that going forward, should we neee their assistance, they will be accomodating.

It was done too fast and problems were ignored. We still have seepage in one corner but I hesitate to even call them.
Description of Work: Thompson installed French drains. We were told the work would take 11/2 days. The men were done in 1. When the man in charge told me the job was done he asked me if there were any problems. I told him not enough mold killer had been used in the crawl space, the black edging was sticking out in spots and he listened and then ignored me. They were in such a rush to get out they pulled the tape off the ceiling and the paint along with it. They chewed up a section of my front yard and never said a word to me. But the worst was the next morning when we went to shower. In the upstairs bathroom there was no water at all. The downstairs bathroom shower emptied onto the basement floor because the men rehooked everything wrong. When my husband called to complain and ask them to send someone they said it wasn't their problem.. It was not until we cancelled the check that someone was sent.

They did a decent job, and worked quick. The only complaint I have is the thin concrete they put over the gravel as a finished surface; it's thin and hollow. They could have used 5000psi crete at 2" thick and it would have been much stronger. Thankfully I'm putting in a subfloor, so I don't have to worry about it cracking or breaking, but one good impact will crack it for sure. Other than that, everything was great. WAY cheaper than Mid-Atlantic, and got the job done just the same.

The salesman came to our house on October 3, 2011 after we had called to set up the appointment. He explained what would be done and gave us a price of $7,600 for the work. We would get 79 feet of the drain system explained above. Our work was to be done on November 28. I removed the old wood floor and the drywall from the basement. William Neidlinger called us at about 7:30 am on Nov 28 and arrived with four young assistents by 8:30. They all worked for the day and completed the job by about 5:30 pm. They left the house reasonably clean even though they had to walk through it often, created a great dea lof concrete dust from jackhamering, and had to cart out clay from the pit dug along the wall. The salesman had forgotten to write down the back-up battery, but another workman came by a few days later to install that. We had originally thought we would just get a new sump pump with a battery back up to make sure that water would not get high in the basement. Even that would have been cheaper in the short run, we are very pleased that we took the advice of the saleman and had the drain system installed. We are going to wait a while before we re-finish the basement, but we are now optimistic that it will be worthwhile to do so. We are very pleased with the results and feel that we paid a fair price for the work done. (It is now July 5, 2013; our basement has consistently stayed dry since their work.)
Description of Work: They installed french drains along all the basement walls, dug a round pit in the corner of the basement, put in a new sump pump, and attached a back-up battery to the pump. They jack-hammered about a foot out from the edge of the walls, drilled holes through the footing of the foundation, covered a plastic pipe which has holes in it with a mesh sleeve, placed the pipe in the trenches next to the walls, placed a thin plastic waffled sheet along the wall from within the trench to a couple inches above the floor level, covered the pipe with gravel, and filled the trench with concrete. The pipes ran along the wall into the pit they dug for the sump pump in the corner of the basement. Water from outside had collected during rain storms along the outside of the walls and ran around and under the foundation. The water seeped through our walls and came up through a small hole that had been drilled in the middle of the basement floor. Whenever it rained hard for a length of time, we got water running along the floor in our basement. Happily, our old sump pump worked, so the water never got high. However, the basement floor was often wet, the raised wood floor and the drywall built by the previous owners had become water damaged. The idea is that the water now will come through the holes in the footing on which the walls are built and into the pipes, drain in to the corner pit, and be pumped out. If any water does come through the walls, it will run down through the waffled plastic sheet along the wall, and into the drain pipes rather than on to the floor. We have had a couple strong rains since the work was done, the kind that would have led to water in our basement before. The basement has remained dry since the work was done. The new sump pump is very quiet. Our small dehumidifier is now able to keep the humidity in the basement at 45%.

We did look them up on Angie's List to see if they had a good rating. We called a couple of other companies and some of them didn't even call us back for estimates so we just decided to go with them. Their work seems to be alright but the true test will be when we get a lot of rain. We were disappointed with one thing. They didn't cover the furniture, television and things like that. We thought they would because they told us when they gave the estimate. We didn't bother covering it because we thought they were going to cover it and the dust was unbelievable. It took us three hours the next morning to clean and we are still cleaning. We didn't have too much to compare the price to. We would use them in the future but we would have a couple of stipulations and make sure they cover things.
Description of Work: We used Thompson's Basement Waterproofing on December 16th to waterproof our wreck room and garage. They also put two sump pumps in.
