I know that I can rely on Mr. Contractor for all types of household repairs. Over the span of five years, I have contracted with them to replace floors and ceilings, install windows and flooring, cement my basement and repair my porch. Each time that I have called, Steve Spector responded quickly and professionally and his crews delivered quality work in a timely and professiol manner.
Description of Work: Mr. Contrator has kept my old house together for many years. This time the company performed roofing and siding work including capping some difficult to reach areas on the third floor of the house. They also worked inside repairing and painting the drywall on my kitchen ceiling.

For months, I had problems getting anyone to take care of what seemed like a simple problem. I wanted the door that led from my kitchen to my garage (and vice-versa) to open outward, rather than inward, so that I could put in a bigger refrigerator. Although I had tried to do it myself, (A) the door was an extremely heavy, metal door; and (B) it was an old-style door, seemed almost industrial, and there was no easy way to move around and install the hinges. I initially called a contractor who had done previous work for me and whom I liked. My thought was, I would like to keep the same door and simply reverse it out somehow, but if necessary, I would consider replacing the door. When they came over, they almost immediately said it couldn't be done, which came as a surprise to me. After all, it's just a door. They explained that the frame was built so solidly into the wall, they simply would not be able to remove the frame. They indicated that they would look into maybe finding different hinges so that they could simply flip the door around and have it open out to the garage, but they called me back a few days later and said it wasn't possible. Next, I called a contractor who was recommended by a friend of mine. He came over and said he thought it should be a pretty easy job, even saying he could flip the frame around so that he could also flip the door around and not have to move the hinges. His price was, quite frankly, shockingly low, but because he came recommended by a trusted friend, I called this contractor a little while later and said I'd like to proceed with the job. For some reason, he never came. I left a message few times and e-mailed him a couple of times, and got no response. To this day, I still have not heard back from him. I also contacted another contractor who was doing work for another friend of mine. This contractor initially set up a time to look at the door, but had to cancel. Despite a few messages from me asking to reschedule, I never heard back from him, though I was warned by my friend that this contractor was always busy and wasn't the best at answering calls. I did not want to deal with that again. Finally, after a few months, I saw a blurb about Mr. Contractor in Philadelphia Magazine. Although the magazine warned that Mr. Contractor might be a little pricey, they would get the job done in a quality manner. I honestly forget now, but I think it was Ken who came out to do the estimate. He asked questions over the phone, so he was prepared when he came by. I greatly appreciated his thoroughness- he explained everything he was looking at, step by step, what looked feasible, and what didn't look feasible. He carefully explained why my first contractor did not want to do it- removing the frame in any way would probably be an enormous undertaking, given how solidly it was in place. He nonetheless said it was an option, if I wanted, but that it would cost a significant amount. He ran a number of options by me, each with an estimated cost, and he explained the good and the bad for each option. He stated, however, that each option came with a caveat, since he would not be doing the work himself, and that the final decision would have to be made on the actual work day, with the actual person who would be working the project. I decided that I would like to look into reversing the frame itself, but we agreed that the only goal was to get the door to open out into the garage, so we agreed on a price and scheduled a time. They were extremely flexible, as I indicated my preference would be a Saturday. On that day, I got a call from Jim about 30 or 45 minutes before the scheduled time, and he called to say that he was on his way. Jim arrived slightly earlier than scheduled, and we proceeded to look at the door. Right away, he expressed skepticism about being able to move the frame without significant cost and time, and he showed me exactly why that was the case. He thought about certain options out loud, but ruled them out and explained why. Finally, he decided on the option that my original contractor wanted to explore- getting special hinges. What was different this time is, he knew where to get the hinges and got them immediately. What may sound like a simple job really wasn't, given the age of the door and how solidly everything was built and designed. Jim worked for a few hours, laboriously making sure that everything fit properly and met my expectations. Aside from one quick trip to a hardware store to get extra supplies, he spent the entire time working on the door. It was about a 3 hour job in my presence. I can't say enough about the quality of the end product. What seemed like an easy fix turned out to be quite complicated and nearly impossible to find someone to do it, but Jim did it, and it works precisely as I wanted. I could easily say that all he did was install some new hinges, but it really was more than that, and Jim cleaned up the area so that it was basically spotless. I still do think that $1,260 was a bit much, despite the few hours of labor it took (and moving that heavy door around was not an easy chore, as I found out the hard way), and since the frame did not have to be moved, I kind of thought that at that price, there might be an offer to repaint the door. Nonetheless, I am extremely happy that I finally found someone who would actually do the job, did it in timely fashion, did a very professional job, and explained everything that could and couldn't be done in careful fashion. Everyone involved was very friendly and courteous. I will absolutely consider Mr. Contractor for my future projects, and if the price is reasonable, they will be toward the top of my list.
Description of Work: Reversed door leading to/from kitchen to/from garage. It was an original door that was designed to meet old fire code specifications.

I called the main number and was told an estimater would call me back. Steve responded to my call same day and came to my house next business day to discuss my list and provide an estimate. Overall cost was higher than other estimates but they were willing to take care of everything (lots of small jobs and some big ones requiring various subcontractors) very quickly... and a friend of mine used Mr. Contractor for a remodel a few years back - she had a good experience. Overall things went very well - and quickly! Almost everyone arrived on time and completed work as planned. The installers doing the trim capping missed a spot altogether. When I first called about the concern, I really didn't know how to describe what I saw and just said it didn't look right and/or finished. That didn't prompt action. Eventually, my neighbor took a picture for me from his upstairs window. I emailed the picture to Steve and he arranged for the installers to come back an finish the job rather quickly. Much better!
Description of Work: Had a rather lengthy punch list of things to complete rather quickly - getting a house ready for sale. Relocate stove gas line, fix leaky tub faucet, replace shower head, fix several outlets and bad circuit breaker, cap trim around all of house, clean gutters, repair stucco, replace rotten wood porch floor, repair door locks, and a few other little things.

It was good. I don't have any dislikes. They were personable and explained everything I needed to know. I have gotten an estimate from someone else and they didn't really explain things to us like Mr. Contractor that's why we went to their company. Actually, it was more expensive than the first estimate that we got but we really liked how the work and what we needed to know was explained to us. And then one time, even picked me up from my job to keep the appointment and just a good experience. We had a lot of stuff done. It really was. I didn't think it would be but it turned out to be. They did a very good job, excellent. I wasn't thrilled with the price but I was happy with the work.
Description of Work: Mr. Contractor Incorporated repaired my porch roof and applied siding to the porch roof. It's actually the overhang of the porch roof. Also, my kitchen windows were capped.

Mr. Contractor was great to work with. They were very timely in giving an estimate, starting the work and completing the work. Barry was our contact and he was very good with, communicating with us every step of the way. He kept checking in to make sure we were happy with the work and always informed us if anything unexpected came up. The work is beautiful and exactly what we were hoping for. Barry seemed to really care about the quality of the work and making sure we are happy with it. We are excited to enjoy our renovated space!

This was a 2-part job. On June 11, a team of three was sent to complete masonry work in basement. Two men prepared wall as one man mixed cement. Crew consulted boss before anything prep work took place. They discussed dampness that I was experiencing, and explained steps to rectify problem. They removed debris, prepped walls and prepared space for part-two (removal of steps). On June 12, carpenters built a new steps w/railing. Carpenter removed 1/3 of a beam that was too low, and supported the section removed with new materials. Voila! Now I no longer have to worry about hitting my head.

I couldn't have asked for better service. Steve came at exactly our scheduled appointment time for my estimate. We went over different options for cost effectiveness of the work being done. I gave a deposit and set up an approximate date for the installation. Steve called to confirm the appointment two nights before. Two weeks later I have fully functioning, fantastic looking windows and a new door. The gentlemen who did the installation (Joe H. and Joe ?) were very professional and friendly. They did a wonderful job. Absolutely no complaints to report.

I spoke to Steve, the owner, about setting up an estimate appointment for the work I needed done. He showed up at the scheduled appointment time and we went over the work required and the costs. We agreed on the amount and I gave him a deposit. We set up an approximate starting work date. Steve called me a week later and confirmed 2 days before the work was to start. On 5/31 two gentleman came to the house, both named joe (joe h and joe?) they arrived on time and a couple of hours later I had a fantastic, totally functional door and 3 new windows. The installers were very professional and friendly. No complaints to report at all.

Wow! I cant say enough good things about Mr. Contractor! We had a list of things that needed to be fixed in our home (shower grouting, sticky door, insulation in basement, leak in crawlspace, etc). After having gone through several contractors in town and not being satisfied with their work/etc, we decided to give Mr. Contractor a call since they seemed to have a good reputation around town. Steve Spector was the guy to take our call and he came out to our house to take a look at the list of things we needed to get fixed, principally among them a leak in the crawlspace. Steve thoroughly diagnosed the crawlspace leak and determined that the roof needed to be re-done to fix the issue. Steve went out of his way to give us a detailed explanation of what work needed to be done and how long each item would take. This was great as not many other contractors we have dealt with took the time to explain the work that is needed to be done. We scheduled his crew to come out the following week to do the work. The crews showed up on time each day they were scheduled to do work and were very respectful of our home and us. They were wonderful! They fixed each item on our list and did a great job... they did not rush their work and really spent the time to make sure things were done the RIGHT way. After the roof repair and other work was completed, the crawlspace leak started to leak again a few days later after some rains. We called Steve and without hesitation he came out again to look in to the issue further as he and Mr. Contractor stand behind their work. He was thorougly concerned as if it was his own home and he spent a lot of his own time diagnosing the problem (something that many other contractors we worked with would not have done). We really appreciated him taking the time out to figure out what the problem was. He even brought out plumbers and several other specialists to help with the diagnosis. Finally, he discovered that another source of the leak was coming from our neighbor's roof top deck. NO OTHER contractor we had worked with in the past would have invested as much time as Steve did to help us out. He really went the extra mile in providing excellent customer support. I would without a doubt hire them to fix any part of our house again. They are a bit more expensive than the other contractors we looked at but they are worth every penny as they do everything in their power to ensure complete customer satisfaction.

All expectations were met or exceeded. -Job started and finished on time -Lip from underpinning formwork was kept minimal as requested -Clearance from top of new slab to to bottom of joist met or exceeded in all areas -Work area was cleaned at the end of every day -Washer, Dry, Tub removed and reconnected -Hot Water heater / Stairs suspended in place for pour
Description of Work: Outstanding work start to finish! I had my entire basement slab lowered 1 foot. Work included total floor demo, sub-grade excavation, full foundation underpinning and pouring a fresh slab. Great attention was given to minor details such as, removing and reconnection of washer / dryer, hanging the steps and heater while slab was setting and adding 2 new steps at the bottom of the stairs. Price in the 10k range, which outbid multiple quotes from other contractors. Crew was on time, respectful and fully met expectations. Well worth it!

Met with Steve. We went over what I needed done. I needed a doorway cut and door installed in the interior wall between my basement and garage. He was extremely knowledgeable and congenial. We set a price. His subs arrived several weeks later as scheduled. The door took several weeks to be manufactured. They did a fantastic job. Left the worksite cleaner than it had been. Both men (subs) were friendly and respectful of me and my home. Very pleased with the results.

We thank [member name removed] for the wonderful review on Angie's List. We appreciate all of our customers who take the time to comment on their experiences. Most of the work done by Mr. Contractor is performed by employees, however there are times that we do use subcontractors. However, this was not one of those times. I would not hear the end of it from Greg Spector and Joe Jones if I didn't clarify something [member name removed]stated. Both Greg and Joe are not subs but employees for Mr. Contractor. Greg is my cousin and he has been with the company for 3 years. Joe has been with the company for 28 years and we all consider him a part of the family. Both men would get mad at me if they thought I told people that they were subs. Again, we thank [member name removed] for the opportunity to show him how our company is committed to making his experience stress-free and professional.

Mr. Contractor was the 4th contractor that we called for our job. The company and Ken Spector were very professional. Ken showed up for the estimate and to sign the contract exactly at the agreed upon time. He called when he said he would call to confirm. We told him we would paint the ceiling and there was never pressure to have them do it. The guys showed up on time on the day of the work and cleaned up the little bit of mess that was made. We are very pleased with the result.
Description of Work: The drywall in our living room ceiling was damaged by a water leak. We tried repairing the damage and redoing the rest of the ceiling ourselves but failed. Mr. Contractor repaired the damage and left the ceiling paint-ready as requested.

They did a beautiful job. I am very impressed with the work. They did a good job in cleaning up after their work.
Description of Work: Mr Kenny came out to my home a week and a half prior to the job. He told me that he would come out the week he started providing the weather. He took an estimate. I have two columns on the porch that needed repair. The water was rotting because the water from my roof was coming down and onto the columns. He said I would also need a new roof for my porch. When they started the job he noticed our roof was not in good shape. He did not charge me any more for installing that plywood to repair the roof. They came out the days they said they would and finished in 4 hours.

The work was done in a timely manner. He was punctual. It's pretty expensive and I wasn't really happy with the quality of work. They did a great job fixing the link in my ceiling, but I was not happy with the work they did in the bathroom. They didn't catch everything that they were supposed to catch. The toilet handle was installed the wrong way. They used poor quality material, for the amount of money that I paid. They used cheap material. Then they also painted a bedroom for me, which there were blotches all over the walls. The paint job wasn't a great job at all. I had to actually ask them to repaint the room and it still looked unprofessionally done.

It is always unfortunate to find a bad complaint left on Angie’s List from a customer of ours. We care deeply about our reputation but most importantly; we care about making our customers happy. Once again we find ourselves in a position to comment on a review of work done on June 18, 2008 – just about 5 years ago. We want to thank Member on commenting positively on both our punctuality and professionalism. Both are important categories when taking into consideration selecting the right contractor to do your work. It is also true that we are not always the cheapest contractor to hire. We wouldn’t classify ourselves as the most expensive, but we firmly believe that you get what you pay for. There are good reasons why Mr. Contractor has been around since 1949 and has won so many awards. Mr. Contractor is competitive with its pricing while also working within your budget and bringing unparalleled services not offered by other contractors. We were very pleased when Member chose to hire us over other estimates she received. We are confused by the ambiguous language Member uses when stating, “they didn’t catch everything that they were supposed to catch” which was followed by, “they used poor material…they used cheap material”… However, there appears to be no specifics. With respect to the paint job, Member is correct in stating she was not happy with the paint job and we agreed to paint the bedroom over for the second time in the color of paint she selected. When we saw Member was still not happy we were prompt in offering her a reduction of $240.00 on her invoice (on July 2, 2008) to satisfy her. We even provided Member with the left over paint so that she could touch up whatever areas of paint were of concern to her. Member thanked us afterwards for all of this. We believed this to be resolved and that the job was completed to satisfaction. We are surprised to see this report on Angie’s List after 5 years and never once receiving a call from Member prior (or currently) regarding the matter. For 64 years we have serviced more than 55,000 clients in the Philadelphia and Bucks County areas while earning a solid reputation. As a result, we have been consistently named "Top 500 Remodelers in the Country" for more than a decade. Selected as part of hundreds of the hottest area companies in their fields, Philadelphia Business Journal ranked Mr. Contractor Inc. #44 for “family-owned businesses” and #23 for “contractors” in the Book of Lists 2013. While maintaining an A+ rating at the Better Business Bureau, we have also been awarded “Best of Philly 2012”, "Best of Philly 2007", "Angie's List Super Service Award 2009”, and “Angie’s List Honor Roll 2012". In 2011 we were featured on the Rachael Ray Show for creating a community garden in Philadelphia (corner of Wharton Street and East Passyunk Avenue at 9th Street). This year we were invited to be an exhibitor at the 2013 Philadelphia Home Show. Our list of awards and accomplishments goes on but it is the hundreds of letters from pleased customers that is most meaningful. Mr. Contractor only employs a staff of expert craftsmen. Our craftsmen are a select and loyal group with decades of experience in their trades. Our sales staff assists our clients to achieve their remodeling dreams. We do everything from kitchen remodeling, creating bathrooms, installing windows & doors, building custom decks; pretty much no job is too big or too small. Wow, what a great experience we have had with Mr. Contractor. After the big storm we were faced with a 40 foot tree on our roof. We got the tree down and then had to find someone to fix the roof. I checked Angies list and found Mr. Contractor. They promptly came out and assessed the damage and even found a few things the insurance co missed. They did a great job, came when they said, never took a break until the work was done and cleaned up. While all this was going on we were having a new floor put down in our hall and kitchen and were using a Big Box co. to do the work. We were having trouble with removal and their sub. I asked Kenny to look at the job and he suggested another flooring that would stand up much better to the wear and tear of our 4 dogs. Seemed like a good deal so we let him have the job. Again, the team showed up and worked great. There were alot of projects that we had been putting off so I asked Kenny to figure out what was what. We could not be more pleased with the way our interior turned out. New interior/ exterior doors. new floors in the bed rooms, new lighting in our expanded kitchen, new electric box, new hall closet, new windows, new powder room and to top it off 2 new fine wood staircases and matching banisters. Wow! Hats off to all the teams and special thanks to Jimmy and Alan who did the carpentry. Great wok, Professional, fast and quality. We can recommend their work without question.

His father used to be good, but his son now owns it and it is not good. He destroyed my house. They took out all my heating return ducts and put in a fiberglass structure and taped it up with duct tape. I am allergic to fiberglass! The heating duct by the laundry room was also left open. I am supposed to have a finished shower but I do not. He even pushed a hole through my sewer piper to put in a washing machine. My windows were all cocked and I could not open them. There was supposed to be cabinet by the sink, but he ran out of room while working. He put drywall on my woodwork in what is supposed to be a colonial. They also steal out of your house. I tried to sue him and I ran out of money with the lawyer.
Description of Work: I hired him to take out my garage, make a live in basement, handicap and remodel kitchen.

Response from Mr. Contractor Inc
First and foremost, it is always unfortunate to find a bad complaint left on Angie’s List. We care deeply about our reputation but most importantly; we care about making our customers happy. In this particular case, customer indicates Mr. Contractor did work at his house on June of 2010. In reality, over $45,000 worth work was done in 2001 and 2008. I am not sure why Angie’s List would allow someone to comment about work that has been completed 12 years and 5 years ago respectively. Not only is all the issues out-of-warranty, but there is no way to indicate what was a result of Mr. Contractor. Anyhow, we have always been under the impression the customer was pleased with the job – why else would he keep hiring Mr. Contractor to work on his home. Putting aside the bad grammar and misspelled words, the complaint incorrectly states that our company was better run by “the father” (2nd generation). Considering the company has been run by “the sons” (3rd generation) since the 1980’s, any dealing that the customer had was always with the sons. So many points made by the customer in his complaint are wrong and questionable. There is no validity in his claims that we “destroyed” the house, used duct tape, damaged sewer pipes, permanently sealed windows, ruined woodwork, and did not include cabinets. Surely we would not have received final payment from the customer. You would think that the customer would have contacted us or that we would have heard from his attorney. Finally, the claim that we also steal in which he warns Angie’s List customers that “they also steal out of your house” is beyond outrageous. In the 30 years that “the sons” have run the company there has never been a customer to state such an allegation. Customer should be reminded that on the Internet, where abnormal behavior is the status quo, tempers can flare in the heat of the moment and word wars can last a long time. But if you damage someone's reputation by trying to embarrass him or her in a public forum, you could be sued for libel or defamation. There is no reason the customer should assume that the messages sent through cyberspace are immune from lawsuits. We are not sure of why the customer chose to launch such an attack publicly on Angie’s List for work done so long ago. We want our customers to be 100% satisfied and go above and beyond what is expected to assure this. We are sorry to have lost the customer as a customer but are thankful for the many customers over the years that continue to use our services. For 64 years we have serviced more than 55,000 clients in the Philadelphia and Bucks County areas while earning a solid reputation. Since I've used Mr. Contractor before, and this was a one-day job, there wasn't as much to it. They redid my home office, windows and added in electrical lines.
Description of Work: I was reading over these other bad reviews, and was shocked to read them, as I had completely different impressions. I've used Mr. Contractor twice over the past 2 years, both for major work in the thousands, and have only good things to say. I've had new tables, cabinets, floors, windows and electrical work done, and they do a great job. You should see my windows and floors. My house is a bit of an anomaly, even for the city. Windows are odd sizes and everything was custom done when it was built 50 years ago. I'm left to make extra for everything, but Ken works with me all the time to create custom work that is professional. They're a top contractor. AND, in this age of terrible customer service, I can get ahold of Kenny al the time, get written estimates and time tables. It's amazing compared to some of the hacks out there. You should hire these guys!

Once again thank you for your time, and please keep us in mind for any future projects. Mr. Contractor Inc.

Very well, no sooner I found Mr. Contractor online and got an estimate the work was started and completed within 48 hours. I had a very bad experience with a local contractor who came and started the work and didn't finish. I found Mr Contractor and the most conveinent thing about them is that they accept credit card payments. This was very helpful considering the first contrator took my deposit and didn't return it. I am very satisfied with my services and the company overall. I will be using this contrator again in the very near future for siding.
Description of Work: Front steps removed and totally replaced.

Mr. Contractor was on time every day. He used some of the best workers ever. Very clean. With a relatively small budget they gave us a beautiful new kitchen. From top to bottom and everything in between they were great. He explained everything as he went. There were no surprises. The experience was, in a word, great! Thanks Mr. Contractor !!!!

My 88 year old house was suffering from age, deferred maintenance, really ugly paneling/dropped ceilings and water damage. I needed help and a friend highly recommended Mr Contractor. I am very pleased with the extensive renovations completed by the entire Mr.Contractor team - they did an excellent job. At the start Kenny systematically diagnosed the critical water issues and presented a step-by-step corrective plan that incorporated various structural renovations throughout the house while updating the look of practically every room. Kenny coordinated several teams of expert craftsmen who skillfully carried out these complex renovations. I was impressed repeatedly by Kenny and his team's ability to proficiently tackle and remedy all the unforseen structural problems that arise out of a project like this. Kenny communicated progress daily, thoroughly explained each step, presented options when appropriate and kept each project moving forward - all with comforting good will and relaxed humor. I am confident in and highly recommend Mr.Contractor and team for any job.
Description of Work: Extensive structural repair: -Gutted and reframed an entire room, added 2 windows ; -Rebuilt and framed several concrete floors -rebuilt ceilings with new supporting joists; -complete renovation of foyer area - new walls, ceiling and floor (water damage) -removed paneling; -replaced 11 inside doors, added molding to match existing woodwork -replaced 4 outside doors and 13 windows all with with new trim and capping; -transformed the full basement from a dark wet mess to a DRY sealed beauty: removed paneling, parged then cemented and painted all basement walls and added 4 block windows; -updated electrical systems; -new drywall on all affected areas; -repaired masonry and parge-coated all outside walls and chimney; replaced stucco in selected window areas; -replaced and regraded porch roof, new capping; -gutted and completely renovated powder room, bathroom and kitchen

I know it sounds expensive, however the carpenters where at my home for hrs. insuring that the doors were properly installed. Weeks later, Barry (owner) returned and installed a ball latch at no extra charge. He also dropped off installation left from another job for my basement. This is at no extra cost, and will be installed when I have my basement renovated. By the way, Mr. Contractor replaced(at no extra cost) a window that he installed five years , because it was difficult to lift.
Description of Work: I had two door installed, and a 1/8 of a kitchen wall repaired. I bought the refurbished doors myself and had them stained and poly- urethaned. Since I don't drive, Mr. Contractor picked up the doors from the antique dealer and delivered them.

First of all they were very neat when taking the bathroom apart. They didn't leave a mess behind at all. Steve is the man who came out to speak with us. He was very realistic and professional with his presentation. I appreciated how he was very accommodating as far as incorporating our ideas with what we wanted done to the bathroom. They were always prompt and on time. We never had to wait. The job they did was even better than I anticipated. It is a small bathroom, but they made it into a luxurious bathroom which is exactly what I wanted.
Description of Work: He completely re-did my bathroom. He gutted the entire room.
