The Skerlec Construction Co did a wonderful job transforming our house in to a HOME; coming in to RESCUE our renovation project after a disastrous start from a previous contractor. After purchasing our first home, we interviewed countless contractors. Many walked through the house and then we never heard from them. The ones that did respond we questioned their plans and prices. We were afraid that they would be like are original contractor who ended up leaving us without a kitchen for 6 months and stole from us. We lived over a year in one bedroom of our house. It was depressing and my wife and I were ready to cut our loss and sell the house. Then by the grace of God we found Mark. Mark came and put together a thorough and detailed plan to fix everything that had been done and to also get us moved in to the house we had dreamed of when we started. Mark and his crew were very friendly and professional, finishing all the work needed in a timely manner with great results. They even took time to fix what they saw was wrong from the previous contractor. Mark gave us advice and direction. He would tell me if my wants were realistic and i appreciated that. They finished the kitchen and bathroom remodeling with great tile work and a beautiful backsplash. Our master bathroom and shower turned out fantastic, looking better than we could have imagined. It feels like a spa. Our powder room was a custom job due to the small size and Mark hit it out of the park. Everyone that comes over goes crazy over our powder room. Mark’s attention to detail is on point. He cares about the little things and it makes his work stand out. Everything that is done, is done right and done with pride. He is not a contractor but a craftsman. The crew also went above and beyond completing little odd jobs throughout the house to put on a nice finishing touch. From hanging pictures, mounting TV’s and cleaning out gutters. Due to COVID our July 5th wedding venue had to close 3 days before the wedding and we moved it to the house. Our bathroom hardware came in late and Mark ran out and installed it the day before. He also helped set up the chairs for the ceremony. Mark puts his whole heart into his work and he takes pride in what he does. I will never use anyone else other than Mark and we will recommend him to anyone. I am more than happy to answer anyones questions or if they want to see pictures of Marks work you are welcome to e-mail me personally (samanthajo645@yahoo.com).

Skerlec Contracting, or at least Mark Sayre took advantage of a situation and shouldn't be trusted. Sayre performed work at my residence when hired by River Communities Fiduciary(which also should not be trusted) while it was held in a Trust at the time. Skerlec grossly overbilled the Trust twice what any reasonable contractor would've charged. I know this because I received all the invoices and asked several contractors to provide an estimate on the same work. I also tried for months to remedy this before writing my review. They charged $8,340(a total of 158 manhours) to seal a skylight, repair nailpops, seal spots on the roof, clean the gutters, replace a furnace filter, patch holes and paint a hallway, put in a new doorstop(which wasn't done), replace a garbage disposal, repair the kitchen floor, put tile in a powder room bathroom(this was done because they cut a piece of the flooring from the bathroom to fix the kitchen floor, even though extra pieces of flooring were in the garage so my bathroom floor was removed and tiled for no reason), they patched and skimcoated the front stairs, sealed a crack on the back porch, fixed drywall in the garage, and put new weatherstripping on the garage door. I say all this so I can be fair and allow everyone to see what was done. The total charge for labor was $6,850 and total for materials was $1,296. They even charged a 15% handling fee for $194. They bought everything at Home Depot and the total cost if I would've purchased the materials was $542. They also charged for basic items they should've had such as utility blades, dust masks, a sponge and spacers for the tile, and 3 separate pieces of "sample" tile to determine which one they wanted to use. I told Mark Sayre that I understood some of the things but it starts to look suspicious when something as simple as a door stop is said to be replaced and it isn't. If small stuff wasn't done then what big stuff wasn't done but billed for. He agreed with me that was a reasonable question. The same went for the sample pieces of tile. They were billed for but not used. They could've been returned. Maybe this was normal until I got the second invoice which was for $2201.13. What was that for. Well it was a total of 38 man hours to thaw the pipes when the furnace broke and the pipes froze. They charged $50 just to make a phone call to the repair company and $218 for materials and $32 for a handling fee?!? to thaw pipes. Once the house was removed from the Trust I had the same issue with the furnace. It was repaired and I simply turned the heat up and everything was fine. Again maybe just two coincidences and it could be explained. Well the final straw was the Trust company(which I should mention is friends with Skerlec/Sayre) kept pushing for possibly putting a new roof on. Skerlec gave an estimate for $20,000. When the house was released from the Trust I was required to to have a roof inspection for my home owners insurance. The roof inspection showed several loose tiles but the roof in good condition. Oddly enough Skerlec was supposed to have been on the roof and fixed issues up there. One of them being the skylight. Well several of the tiles around the skylight were loose and out of place. I also had two separate estimates done for roof replacement. They both came in around $10,000 and $12,000 respectively. Showing once again an overcharge from Skerlec. I called Skerlec and Mark Sayre multiple times and documented each call. It took awhile to finally get a return call and when I did it was still frustrating. Mark Sayre was aware of the exact residence I was talking about but when I asked him what they did for so many hours on the first job he couldn't give me an answer. When I asked what they did for 38 hours to thaw the pipes he again couldn't give an answer but said he would look into it and get back to me. He never did. He told me he would be talking to the actual guy who did most of the work there that day and would get back to me and let me know and we could set up a meeting at the residence to go over everything and discussion possible remedies. I never heard from him again. I called him on 2 separate occasions and got no answer. I also spoke with Eric O'Connor of River Communities Fiduciary who told me any billing issues would have to be taken up with Skerlec. This company or again at least Mark Sayre should not be trusted and took advantage of a situation to overbill and underperform knowing no questions would be asked and the bill would be paid by the Trust. I photographed everything that was on the invoice and still welcome a call back finally from Sayre(its been 3 months since we last spoke) to go over all this work. I will say that I did on 2 occasions make contact with Mark Skerlec(when I reached the secretary she mistakenly gave me his number) and he was easy to speak with but couldn't answer my questions as Mark Sayre was the foreman on my job site. Photos available as well, posted on Yelp

I had the entire outside of my house renovated and I am so pleased with the detail to work that was done, the friendliness of the men who were here each day, and the communication I had with the lead guy so I knew what to expect from day to day (such as if they were leaving early to work on another person's project while mine was waiting on more materials to arrive, or when what they were doing to fix my home might impact my day to day activities). I am also pleased with the fact that once they checked out my insulation and determined that what I had was sufficient, they explained how I would be saving money on my project by not replacing something that was still in good condition!

The installation was completed in a timely manner. The roofer lost part of the siding and was unable to match it. Fortunately I had a spare piece of siding to match because he said he would have to order it and it would take time. Since the installation, I have had my roof leak on 3 occasions. Each time I called, I was promised it would be fixed. The last call went out this past April, I was promised that I would get a call when it was fixed. I never got a call. This past week-end with heavy rains, I returned home from shopping to find my hallway floor wet again. I called for the 3rd time to report the leak. My next move is to call my insurance company to report damage to the attic, insulation and hardwood flooring from the roof leak. The roof is not 5 years old and has leaked every time a heavy rain falls.

After many repairs by another reputed Co. Skerlec repaired the roof and returned until it no longer leaked. The men were all things that counted. After a fire two doors down they came to check the roof and cleaned all the debris. They are going to repair the front of my building this week. Just the usual maintenance on a 100 year old building

Went well - see above.
Description of Work: I needed the roof replaced on my shed, and gutters replaced on the back of my house. I started looking for a contractor to do the work in September, but all the ones I contacted via Angies List were too busy. I contacted Skerlec, and Larry stopped over the next day (Saturday) to give me a quote. The roofers came about three weeks later, and were very pleasant, cleaned up and were gone in a few hours. While there seemed to be a "lack of communication" between Larry and his men, I was pleased with the end result, and appreciated that they were willing to take a small job.

The job did not start well and finished even worse. It was a nightmare from beginning to end. Unprofessional: The work crew was extremely unprofessional. One example: Unbeknownst to them, I was next door while they were working. Instead of doing their job, they were fooling around on my patio tossing my large landscaping cobbles into the woods. Shoddy workmanship: The deck that they built sagged significantly within two years of construction, and the gutter they installed fell off the building before the end of the next summer. Slow: The work was completed 72 days after the contract was signed. Deadlines that were verbally agreed upon were repeatedly missed, and excuse after excuse was made for the delays. Days would go by with no contact from the contractor and no workers present on site until I called them to complain. Poor cleanup: The work site was a mess after they left. Bushes were damaged, soil & gravel were left in the yard, garbage was thrown over the hillside. Dishonest: The work described above was to be completed at the same cost as stated in the initial proposal. I did not agree to any budget modifications either verbally or in writing after I signed the original contract. I paid my bill in full per the signed contract ($9,995.00) plus $500.00 per my verbal agreement with Larry Gallespie for the removal of a side deck and supports. Thereafter, I received an invoice indicating that I owed an additional $3,000.00. The contractor asked for an additional $500.00 for the side deck/support removal plus $2,500.00 for the construction of the small deck that replaced the removed connector. The contractor performed significantly less work than outlined in the original proposal and had the nerve to ask for considerably more money. LESSON LEARNED: 1. Get everything in writing in explicit detail. 2. Do not hire Skerlec Contracting.
Description of Work: On August 31st, 2007 Robert Skerlec, the business owner, emailed a proposal for garage repair work to me for approval. I accepted the proposal, signed it, and mailed a copy to Skerlec Contracting on September 19, 2007. The total charge for the job per that proposal was to be $9,995.00. (The proposal included an option to remove and replace the entire garage floor for an additional $2,500.00. I declined this option per my signed contract.) In September 2007 I made a verbal agreement with Larry Gallespie, the job foreman, to pay an additional $500.00 for the removal of a side deck and supports. Shortly thereafter, I met with Robert Skerlec and Larry Gallespie at the job site. They proposed a revision to the scope of work, and I verbally agreed to that revision. Rather than remove all of the garage's concrete block walls and rebuild them as described in the original proposal, Skerlec would repair/replace just the damaged block, remove a concrete connector between the garage and house, and build a small deck to replace the removed connector.
