Fencing Service
They replaced an entire fence. They come out and inspect the job and then pick a sub contractor. I didn't really know who was going to be doing the work and had to dig in on my own to find out who was actually going to do the work.

Garage Door Service
I had a good experience with them. He was super efficient. He was in and out in about two hours. It was good. It was more expensive. We never had any problem with it. He must have done hundreds of them because he knew where every bolt and tools he has in his hand. Everything is working well. He was good with his punctuality. They did the paperwork at the store.

My husband and I were told that he did not have the correct Veterans ID. The correct ID that HD accepts (and you wouldn't know this until you asked at the checkout counter) is a VA issued card that indicates the veteran is "service connected". The term "service connected" is usually attributed to veterans with disabilities that qualify for specialty medical care and other VA benefits. I'm wondering how many disabled veterans would be shopping at Home Depot for home project supplies. It seems to me HD has found a work-around to avoid extending the discount. HD should either clear up the confusion about it's veterans discount policy or discontinue it.
Just to be clear, we did not make the purchase of $240. It was a bit embarrassing to have to wade through the HD Veterans discount policy at the checkout counter with other shoppers and staff listening in.

They were fine and the sales clerk we spoke with seemed to know what they were talking about. The refrigerator is what they said it was in terms of the features and we have had no problems with it.

Water Heater Service
We found our water heater leaking on a Sunday night, so I called Monday morning to find someone to replace it. Home Depot was the cheapest of the three contractors I called by at least $150, so I went with them. A GE 40-gallon tank cost $772 with the installation. The order was placed and paid for over the phone. It took me a while to talk to a few contractors and figure things out, so it was late Monday by the time I made up my mind to go with them. But even calling them back around 9:00 PM they were able to schedule someone to come out the next morning, giving me an 8 AM to 12 PM window. A plumber showed up around 10:30 AM from P & L Plumbing. He examined my old tank and when I mentioned there was still some leaking occurring, he took a look at the pipes going to and from it and told me the shut-off valves were probably leaking. It cost another $130 to replace those ($65 each), which he did first. Not a bad job but he did drip several streaks of welding compound on the pipes. Not a big deal but it doesn't look so pretty. He also had to re-weld some joints a few times before there wasn't any leaking (he claimed he had never had leaks before). He then removed the old tank and did a decent job getting it up my basement stairs (which lead to the kitchen) and out the back door without really scratching anything. Same with hauling in the new one. He installed the new one and turned on the water, and started cleaning up. After a few minutes I noticed some water coming out of the pipe intake area of the tank. He tried to tighten it a few times (he seemed understandably reluctant to have to replace the tank), but eventually he was forced to get a new tank. He called in for a new one, and someone showed up with it and they both installed it without any problems. The new one worked fine. The whole process took around 4 hours. The one major issue I had was that when the plumber showed up he told me there was a $70 permit fee for my area plus a $20 processing fee. Home Depot, when I first called to inquire about price, told me there was no permit fee for my area. So I called them after the plumber hit me with that news (he patiently waited), and they said their system wasn't updated for all areas yet, so mine must not have come up. My problem was that they told me there was no fee, not that they didn't know. I had to talk to a supervisor and basically threaten never to use Home Depot again and to give them a bad review here if they didn't pay the fee for me, as I thought they should since they misled me. I picked them based on price, but with that fee their price wasn't much better than the local contractors, who I'm sure included the permit fee in their estimates. Thankfully they relented so I can give them a good review here...I appreciate good customer service. The only other comment I have is the plumber, who was friendly, didn't seem too concerned about cleaning up some of the mess he made (like the puddles of water on the floor).

Rentals - Equipment
The washer performed well, but was in need of some minor maintenance (rubber foot was missing). The Home Depot associate gave me instructions on how to operate the washer, but there were no instructions on how to use detergent (I also forgot to ask).

Carpet Installation
IT STARTED OUT REALLY WELL- THE SALES GUY WAS VERY HELPFUL AND TOOK US TO A CARPET THAT WOULD WORK PERFECTLY FOR US AND PROVIDED US SEVERAL SAMPLE COLORS. THE MEASURING GUY WAS PROMPT AND POLITE, ALTHOUGH HE ESTIMATED SEVERAL YARDS MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE WE GOT BIDS FROM. THE PROBLEM WAS THAT THE NUMBER WE GOT FROM THE SALES GUY ($900) WAS JUST MULTIPLYING THE DIMENSIONS OF THE ROOM AND ASSUMED THAT EVERYTHING WAS INCLUDED, SO THE ACTUAL ESTIMATE CAME OUT TO OVER TWICE AS MUCH. IT WAS SHOCKING BECAUSE WHY DOESN'T THE SALESPERSON KNOW THAT 1) YOU NEED MORE CARPET THAN ACTUALLY JUST MULTIPLYING THE LENGTH BY THE WIDTH OF THE ROOM; AND 2) NOT EVERYTHING WAS INCLUDED EVEN THOUGH THAT IS WHAT THEY CLAIM. THERE WERE A LOT OF HIDDEN COSTS THAT MADE UP FOR THEIR SEEMINGLY LOWER CARPET PRICES. AND BECAUSE THEY USE SUB-CONTRACTORS AND NOT IN-HOUSE WORKERS, I FOUND IT MORE DIFFICULT TO TRUST THE PEOPLE DOING THE WORK.

Window Service
THEY COME WITH A LIFETIME WARRANTY, WHICH IS TRANSFERRABLE TO ANY SUBSEQUENT OWNERS, AND A BREAKAGE WARRANTY (NON-TRANSFERRABLE, BUT HEY, IF A KID THROWS A BASEBALL THROUGH YOUR WINDOW, YOU'RE COVERED), SO MAYBE IT WAS WORTH IT. BUT WE HAD SOME ISSUES. THE WORK IS ALL SUB-CONTRACTED, SO MY EXPERIENCE MAY NOT BE INDICATIVE OF YOUR EXPERIENCE. I DO KNOW THAT OUR GUY (HABIB) WORKED VERY HARD (ABOUT 8 HOURS TO INSTALL) AND GOT PAID VERY LITTLE ($500, IF YOU BELIEVE HIM) BUT THE QUALITY IS NOT PERFECT. WE HAD TO CALL THE PROJECT MANAGER TO GET HIM TO PROPERLY INSULATE THE WINDOWS AND HE HAD TO COME BACK TWICE TO CAULK THE MOLDING. THE MOLDING STILL BOTHERS ME; IT WASN'T PROPERLY CUT SO THE CORNERS HAVE GAPS. ALSO THE PROJECT MANAGER, STAN, WAS AWFUL ENOUGH TO MAKE ME NEVER USE THEM AGAIN OR RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE. HE INITIALLY REFUSED TO HELP US WITH THE CAULKING ISSUE (I HADN'T NOTICED THE TOP OF THE MOLDING WASN'T CAULKED UNTIL I WENT TO PAINT) AND ONLY ACQUISED AFTER AN HOUR ARGUMENT.

HOME DEPOT USES SUBCONTRACTORS. BY THE TIME THEY FINISHED, I HAD MORE LEAKS THAN WHEN THEY STARTED. I'VE BEEN WORKING WITH THEM FOR TWO YEARS TO TRY AND GET EVERYTHING RESOLVED AND IT HAS BEEN AN ONGOING MESS. THEY ARE GOING TO HAVE TO REPAINT 4 ROOMS BECAUSE EVERYTHING IS SUCH A MESS. IT WAS A REALLY BAD EXPERIENCE AND I WOULD NOT USE THEIR CONTRACTORS AGAIN.
