At the beginning of the renovations everything seemed to be going well. The framing, dry-walling and electrical was done quickly. There was a little bit of lag time due to the contractor never asking our final choice for laminate, but it was ordered and the work continued. As the project neared its end, it seemed very difficult to get anybody to come here to finish the work. And then when they were working here, they seemed rushed due to other projects which resulted in sloppy work. My first example, is that a door inside our basement was cut and then attached in an attempt to make it square with the doorway. But what the contractor hadn't realized was that the doorway that they installed wasn't level, so large gaps were visible when the door was closed. The contractor attempted to collect final payment, failing to mention these gaps (acting as if he didn't notice it). We brought it to his attention and it resulted in another day of work to re-do the doorway so it was level and another cut to the door. It was disappointing that we had to bring it to his attention, when he was the one who hung the door. My second example, is that after all the work was completed a friend used our bathroom which had been tiled, to find that the toilet rocked. When you look closer you can see that the tile around the toilet is not level which is what caused the toilet to rock. Again, it's disappointing to have to tell your contractor that their work was not done properly and he had called it acceptable. He did come back to fix it. But that consisted of a shim and some caulk. My third example, is that we had requested a custom built-in unit to hold a tv and for some additional storage space. The wood panels were not flush against each other or with the wall. When we pointed this out, they then sanded some of the corners to make it appear flush and where there were huge gaps, they just filled the space with caulk.. We also chose to give the contractor our garage code to access our house and a bay in our garage to store equipment. Both were mistakes. Our contractor knew we were out of town one weekend as the project neared its end and he told us the work would be completed on Friday. A friend of ours saw the garage open and stopped by on Saturday to say hi. He found the contractor finishing up some work. We were not happy to hear that our contractor was in our house over the weekend, when we were out of town, without ever asking for permission or mentioning it. Again, another sign that they had too many projects going on and we paid the price. They also stored tools in our garage throughout the entire project, which was why we allowed them to use the space. Never realizing that they were going to cut wood in our garage which then coated everything in sawdust. And they left multiple piles of sawdust all over the garage floor. If we would have known the mess we were going to be left with, we wouldn't have allowed them to use the space. Our last complaint is that the contractor called us after receiving final payment to tell us that we had gone over on the floor budget and was asking for another hundred dollars. In our minds, he should have brought that to our attention before the laminate was purchased, not after the fact, especially after we had already paid the final payment. We sincerely hope that this was a fluke. That this contractor mistakenly took on more work than he could handle and the work completed in our house suffered for it. We do not want to believe that this is how he does business. When hiring a contractor for a substantial amount of money we expected that they would do a professional job and not something that at times looked like we tried to do it ourselves.
