We've been very happy with them. I would recommend West Side Electric. The price was a fair amount but there was a lot of work. They have a troubleshooter, an older man named David who comes out and is very knowledgeable. He tells you what you need to do. Everybody gets them but we were fortunate enough to. We wanted to run wires through walls so there wouldn't be cords on the floor and he was very helpful with that. They were just prompt. I don't think they are inexpensive but I think you get what you pay for. I just have a lot of faith in them and because the building is so old, they did things right.

We were having a gas fireplace insert installed in our existing wood burning fireplace by All Fuel (see my positive rating for All Fuel). The quote from All Fuel included the electrical portion performed by a sub contracter at the price of $350. I left the electrical contractor up to All Fuel figuring they would better be able to coordinate timing and they have previously worked together making for a smoother installation. I couldn't have been happier. Devan from West Side Electric showed up on time. He was courteous and worked efficiently with the All Fuel installers. He completed his work, cleaned up and left. He told me that the separate bill from them would be sent. I did expect the electrical bill to be $350 as quoted but got a pleasant surprise. The bill came 4 days later and was only $203. I was very pleased to see they only charged me for the time spent and parts used. Obviously an honest company with integrity.
Description of Work: West Side Electric ran the wiring for the electrical portion of our gas fireplace insert that was installed at the same time.

Alan was on time, friendly, professional and well spoken. He estimated $3800 to replace knob & tube in attic. We went with a lower estimate ($2200) but in the end the lower estimate was inaccurate & we ended up paying about $3000. I think this means Alan was the better estimator- I'd definitely use them in the future!

Overall I would give the expierince a slightly unsatisfactory. This was due to issue both with the workmanship and communication, but it was also not enitrely the electricians fault. I had a bunch of work done on my house while the roof was being replaced becuuase I have no attic (flat roof) and it was much easier to compete while the roof was off. This being said the amount of work seemed to be too much for the two individuals that were sent. They had to work very quickly to get things done in the timeframe that was availiable and in doing so several errors were made that should not have been. These included, improper location of some of the home theater wiring, incorrect hole size cut in the ceiling for the new fan, a hole drilled, in error, through a newly painted wall. I think the estimator really did the company a disservice by sending two guys to do the job of three.
Description of Work: Installed new bathroom ceiling fan, installed new ceiling light box in living room, installed new ceiling light box in closet, installed four new recessed lights, wired five speaker plates and ran smuf tube for projector signal cables, installed new ceiling power outlet for projector.

I called West Side to repair a low voltage lighting system. One of the tracks was completely out. A few of the lights on other tracks were either completely out, or flickering. Amazingly, someone was available and was at my house within the hour! Ray discovered a minor problem with the transformer - it took about five minutes to diagnose and repair. He also made adjustments to the lights on the other tracks. Since he had to charge for an hour's visit, he also took the time to explain a few things about LV systems, which can be very temperamental. He was super nice, funny, and a real pro. It was a great experience.

West Side Electric was as professional as they get. Aaron, the estimator we worked with, came out and surveyed our home for the electrical work that we felt was needed. He was very detail oriented in his evaluation. He took pictures, and took lots of notes relevant to the job - so that he had a very good understanding of what the work entailed. He was a great communicator ; and informed us as to every aspect of the job. He is a great representative for the company. Aaron's professionalism gave us a great deal of confidence in the caliber of staff at West Side Electric. Once we contracted with them and agreed on a start date; the professionalilsm and detail orientation of the staff who showed up to do the work was fantastic. Jeff and Patrick were very thorough and quick in the high quality work that they did. They showed up on time everyday and did high quality work. When they would come across anything they felt we should be aware of -- they were quick to point it out. We did make some additions to the original work contracted-- as it made the most sense to do it with the rest of the work that they were doing. Additions that we would not have thought of by ourselves. They cleaned up any messes that were made by wall removal; and cut outs that needed to be performed as part of the job. All in all, working with the West Side Electric team was an extremely positive experience; and we would definitely utilize their services again -- if we determine that there is more electrical work that needs to be done. Their great communication, professionalism, and attention to detail was a constant. When I hire a professional I want to find a team that is really smart and really cares about the work that they are doing for you. We felt that this is absolutely what we got with West Side Electric.
Description of Work: The job was very extensive. Our home was built in 1938 -- and much of the electrical needed to be upgraded. Including a) Installation of 200 amp meter main (PGE was notified, inspected and approved every step of the way.) b) Installation of new Main Breaker d) Extensive re-wiring e) Installation of Attic fan f) Installation of ground rods to code g) Installation of numerous dedicated outlets and much more

Went beautifully - see previous narrative!
Description of Work: We had a mysterious power outage in that some of the lights/electrical plugs on one circuit were live and working and the others weren't. By doing some internet research, we did a lot of homework ourselves by looking for loose wires/burnt wires, etc., in all the plugs and light switches. Also made 3 trips to Home Depot and talked to some "professionals" who all indicated that it was probably a loose wire somewhere. We finally made the call and our technician checked everything, scratched his head a few times and couldn't find the problem until he had an "AHA" moment and looked at the only light switch that we didn't take apart (because it was working) and the loose wire was there!

I finally found a chandelier for my dinning room at an Antique store. The house had been accumulating smaller electrical problems for some time. So, after checking Angie's and talking to my Roofer - I called WSE and asked about details on all the little projects. They were informative, flexible and responsive. The workmen were timely and cleaned up very well in all the sections around the house where they worked. There was a problem with the dinning room light, the base plate of the new one was much smaller than the old. One of the WSE guys had a great solution, to get a decorative ceiling plate to cover the gaping hole. Off I went to Home Depot, returning with the ceiling plate. It was perfect. The guys kept busy while I was gone without an issue. They brought the correct equipment to be able to access the high places and were helpful with suggestions I had not thought about.
Description of Work: My Roofer (J. Vaughn Roofing) had West Side Electric preform some work at my home, I was impressed, so - I hired them to; 1.) Hang a new Chandelier and remove the old 2.) Change the light fixture over a 2 story stairwell drop 3.) Fix some broken lighting cans 4.) Install new electrical sockets, about 5 of them 5.) Solve a problem with a light fixture hanging 16 feet up

Job Estimator originally made me feel that he knew what was needed for the job and even though they weren't the lowest priced I went with them. As the job progressed communication was poor and price continued to go up. The work was done on a relatively timely basis though it could have saved me, and them, time if someone had asked if I was at a point in the job that it made sense for them to come and do their work. Another service that they perform, and which should be explained as part of the service, is to install the fixtures if they are available to install. I didn't have all of them and so I miss out on that service...which should have been deducted from the bid. I would say that making sure that everything is very, very clear from the beginning is important with these guys and that one should realize that every extra is just that...an extra! Sometimes when doing this kind of work things come up that are unavoidable and I'll give them that. Make sure that you schedule the job to start when you are ready...their schedulers will apply pressure to get started. The didn't tell me about the "Warranty" on their work either...and the fact that they don't "Warrant" anything that isn't done by them...nice service but it should be explained at the beginning. Understand completely what is involved before you sign any paperwork!!

When a strange man walked up to my house I promptly opened the door, expecting the electrician. The man made a joke about giving a fine for still having a Christmas wreath up. I had a momentary moment of panic, as it wasn't the electrician and he seemed 'strange.' As I was about to slam the door, he laughed and said he was the electrician. He had set his tools down before I'd opened the door and I hadn't noticed them. Scarring your clients is not professional! As mentioned above, it turned out we didn't really need an electrician. It was just poor luck that the light bulb burned out right after the my husband fixed the switch & we assumed the fix hadn't worked. I understand that the electrician's time is his time & it isn't his fault we weren't thorough enough to figure out the problem on our own. However, he was not at all sympathetic and somewhat mocking. I have had various repair professionals give a discounted price when they really didn't have much work to do. I know this is optional and he had the right to charge full price, but it doesn't build company loyalty. Especially when the repair man wasn't even sympathetic. Not fun to pay over $100 to have a light bulb changed, to be made fun of for it & to be scared by the repair man prior! I had called West Side Electric for this small problem because they had done a large job for us a couple of years ago and I had been happy with the work. Unfortunately , I'm going to have to find a new electrician next time we have a problem.
Description of Work: Changed a light bulb! My husband had replaced the switch on the porch light after it stopped working. This fixed it. However, it stopped working again after a couple of days. Turns out the light bulb was burned out.

I apologize for our electrician scarring the customer. This was not his intention, he was just trying to break the ice as he always does when he arrives at a residence with a joke. We are sorry that the light bulb had burned out and the customer had not checked that before our arrival. We have a minimum billing charge of $105 for the first hour which was billed. Occasionally there are easy fixes and this price doesn't seem fair but this is what we have to charge in order to stay in business. We appreciate the customers past business with us and we are sorry that they were not happy this time around. We are all worried about the present economy and spending money right now is never a pleasant experience.

WSE always does a great job for us on projects large and small. That is why we don't even bother calling other people because we have had at least 4 calls with them over the last 5 years and every time is a good experience unlike so many other contractors that are inconsistent. I think their prices (from the first time we checked 5 years ago) might be $10 an hour higher or so (10-15%) but I think they are well worth it.

Overall they were very knowlegeable and provided the service expected. The home had a service panel that had been cobbled together over many, many years. After recently purchasing the home, it was a high priority for us to replace the panel and bring the house up to code. Unfortunately, the new panel didn't pass the initial inspection (due to specific floating home requirements) and a recent but incorrect wire that had been run for a hot tub installation a few years earlier. Fortunately, Westside quickly followed up with the city to ensure they understood the code and were out within days to rectify the situation at no additional charge.
