They were here 20 minutes and charged me $125.00 with a discount it was $112.50. I called another company and they charge $180 for 10lbs of R22 coolant and that is with a reasonable profit built in. I fired Sunset from handling my commercial and residential units.
Description of Work: They say they performed a diagnostic test for $89.95. The labor was to find a leak, fix the leak and put in 10lbs of R22 coolant. They charged me $470.00 and with a discount it was $423.00 for the R22.

Bill was great. Showed up when he said he would, was very professional and nice. He gave me a full tutorial on our system (we just bought the house and were unfamiliar with how the system worked), changed some vents for me, and even looked at my fireplace. He went above and beyond the call of duty. I really appreciated it.
Description of Work: Had furnace serviced. He serviced the furnace, cleaned the air filters, changed some of my vents and gave me a tutorial on how to work my furnace system.

We had bids from 4 companies & 3 different brands of equivalent furnace. All came in very close to price, Chose Sunset because of the emphasis on customer service and the expertise of the estimator. Everyone involved from the estimator to the person who did the planning and fabrication to the installers to the supervisor seemed very competent, responsive, and courteous. We ran into two problems which required additional work. (1) The installers first vented the exhaust to the east side of the house where it emptied by a path along the side of the house. This meant anyone walking outside there could get a whiff of fumes. We asked if this arrangement could be changed, and the supervisor readily agreed that it was not a good situation and had the installers redo it so the exhaust vented through the eave, a much better solution. (2) A more complicated problem was the issue of apparent inadequate return air to the furnace. The thermostat kept reading that the filter was 100% clogged, even though it was brand new. The supervisor and fabricator determined that the existing return air was not sufficient, causing the problem. The supervisor felt we needed to install more return air ductwork or we would risk burning up the motor. This involved installing a duct from a second floor closet to the garage below where the furnace is located. It had to be suspended along the garage ceiling to the furnace. So we lost a little closet space and gained a lot of exposed ductwork in the garage. This would have been okay, except that it did not solve the problem. The furnace still seemed not to get enough return air. Part of the problem may have been clogged AC fins. They cleaned these out, but we still had the problem. Eventually they had to reinstall the furnace and rebuild the entire sheet metalwork around it, repositioning the filter cabinet and changing the space where the return air enters the furnace. This has seemed to do the trick. I give this company an "A" for their professionalism and their commitment to customer satisfaction. I also them an "A" for their persistence in solving the two problems, which added extra labor, material, and time to the project at their expense. I suspect another company might have not have been so accommodating. I am giving Sunset an overall score of "B" only because these issues were not anticipated before installation, causing us some inconvenience as well as some possibly unnecessary work. However, I would definitely recommend them.
Description of Work: Sunset installed a Carrier Infinity high efficiency (96%) gas furnace to replace our old one. Included a new thermostat and additional sheet metal/duct work.

They showed up when they said they would. They were courteous. They were very through but unfortunately they weren't able to help with my problem. If needed though I would hire them for other work.
Description of Work: They came out to see if they could install a heat pump for me which would have also involved duct work. We have an old radiator system with a boiler so it would have required the duct work throughout the house. But because of the layout of our house there was no way to have this work out.

They certainly deserve the A rating they have on Angie's List. I called three companies to get estimates. I had a hard time choosing which company to go with but I went with them because I was familiar with their name. The workers showed up on time to do the work. I thought they were just going to review the work but they were there with a full crew and two trucks, to do the installation. I had thought they were just coming out to check up on what was going to be done so I had another appointment to be at. When I came home they were done, had cleaned up cleaner than it was before they came and had left. I had no trouble with it at all. They balanced the heat for me and installed a new thermostat. I would certainly use them again if I needed to get a new furnace.
Description of Work: They installed a new high efficency furnace. This was a nautral gas furnace. I was very impressed with the man that came out to give the estimate. The workers that came out thoroughly explained what they were going to do.

First, this was a slightly tricky job because we're on a steep slope and the furnace is confined to a small space under the house. Second, they subcontracted to bring in a, get this, crane to lift the A/C unit over the house and into position! The work was expertly done in a timely way. Although most of it was done by their main tech (can't remember his name), there might have been 4 guys on the job at one point... but mostly 2. They had to tear out the old furnace and then, with some difficulty, mate the new furnace to the old ducting system. This required some sheet-metal handy work (though not perfect - I would have liked more curves than angles - but it was likely the best that could have been done in this tight spot). Then, we hit a slight snag... really through no fault of Sunset. The City of Portland wouldn't approve the final inspection because of a picky, and very debatable, rule for a special house like mine. I felt that Sunset HAD met the weird rule of venting and draining to the perimeter of the house because our house is on stilts. Anyway, Sunset made good within a couple of days (at no extra expense they extended some venting and drain pipe quite a bit further)... and it turned out very nice. No complaints what-so-ever. They even agreed to toss in a 1st year inspection, and after 12 months they sent out a technician to give the system a first-year check-up for free.
Description of Work: Replacement of older gas furnace and central A/C unit. Partial re-wire for A/C unit (using ther subcontracted electrician). The part of the plenum that has the A/C was also rebuilt and mated to the remaining ducting system. They also decommished an old duct to our garage that I didn't want to use. They pulled all permits. Installed a new 96% high efficiency Carrier furnace (can't remember how many BTUs, but it wasn't a small unit) and a 16 SEER 4 ton A/C compressor. They also provided a pad for the compressor. This was the Carrier "Infinity" series that has a variable speed motor and comes with a really fancy computer for a thermostat. Old equipment taken away and old refrigerant collected (as per law). Nick expertly bid the job. I had received a bid from another big competitor and they were about the same (though there was something about Sunset that felt better). I'm posting this in February of 2009 but the work was done in August 2006 (but I'm new to Angie's list).

The sales rep, Nick, was very professional and knew his business inside and out. He did computer and manual calculations on the duct return system and the home insulation. He calculated the size of the appropriate heat pump. Price was very fair and they helped with Energy Trust incentives. During the installation it was clean, quick, professional and the installers knew what they were doing. The job was neat and clean and the installers were polite.

They educated us about the different models and how long it would take to recoup costs at different levels of efficiency. All of the old stuff disappeared. They cleaned up after themselves remarkably well. They were working in a small, dark, 50 year old space, and it looked clean and bright afterwards. The inspectors admired the work.

Unfortunately, after Sunset's servicing, although the furnace was no longer totally dead, it still was cutting out frequently, just like before. I called Sunset back to schedule a return visit, and although I did not speak to a tech, the person I spoke with said (paraphrasing) "Oh, there are other parts that might need to be replaced too." Since they had already replaced several parts without fixing the problem, I decided to give a different company* a chance ... Company #2's tech found that the furnace's heat exchanger was full of ash inside and recommended it be cleaned (he pulled out a couple big chunks of ash). Since this company doesn't do the cleaning, I have scheduled a cleaning, and then will have company #2 come back to inspect the cleaned furnace and see if anything else needs to be done. I can't say for sure yet that this is "the" problem, but clearly the furnace needs cleaning and Sunset did not mention this. (To be fair to Sunset - company #2's service was one month later. It is possible that some ash built up during that time - but I do know that the furnace has not been cleaned in at least 6 years, and the furnace was not being used very much during that month, so if the furnace did get dirtier during that month, it wasn't by much). *I am still working with the other company, when that's done I'll add a report for them.
Description of Work: Called Sunset to repair my oil furnace which had begun to cut out sometimes, and finally had stopped working altogether. They were friendly on the phone and scheduling the work was easy. Their tech replaced a number of parts and recommended that the furnace get a tune up every year.

From the first appointment through the entire project I can't say enough positives about this "Team" from top to bottom. They started promptly and finished on time. I recently retired so I was home for the complete install and I was very impressed. Very neat, great communication, work ethic, and took tremendous pride in their finished product. I had to decide between three choices and I am very happy I picked Sunset. Tremendous customer service.

On Sunday February 10, 2008 my heat was not working. I was leaving town the next day and I have a tenant, so I needed it fixed that day, if possible. I called Sunset Heating and Cooling, who had installed the furnace 15 years before. Their rates for Sunday work seemed comparable to other similar companies. The problem was that the thermostat was broken. The work man said he could replace the thermostat that day with a thermostat costing $450 dollars. He told me it was a deal and should have been $500. I asked if he had any less expensive thermostats and he said no. I agreed, because I felt I had no other choice. He installed a Honeywell VisionPRO TH8000 series thermostat. This thermostat, which I could have purchased for $130 at the hardware store down the street, had many more features than I needed. This thermostat didn't work correctly. It consistently ran at higher temperatures than I programmed it to. I bought a different thermostat for $50 that works, installed it and sent the Honewell VisionPRO back to Sunset Heating and Cooling, with a request for a refund on March 9, 2008. They received it the next day. I have never received any response from Sunset. As of today, May 11, 2008, they have made no attempt to contact me regarding this matter.

Sunset took really good care of us. It seems the front office told the service person to fix anything he found, so when we arrived home to a bill about 3 times what we were told it would be, we were pretty upset. Before we could call to complain they had a revised, corrected invoice in our mailbox. Very good of them to catch the mistake and honor our phone quote.

We also had Nic out to give us an estimate on our heat pump and a new high end electronic filter that removes .01 of the particulate in the air. Nic is a really professional salesperson, actually the most professional who we have ever dealt with and we are senior citizens. I would highly recommend Sunset Heating. We have actually been a customer for over 30 years starting in 1977 when they delivered oil to us, and then we had them remove the oil furnace in 1988 and replace it with a Carrier Heat Pump/Electric backup. Our heating bills and Air Conditioning bills with that old unit are around $70 to $100 per month, even with the electric backup. I like the clean heat, and don't like natural gas because of the safety. Well, that is my two bits, great experience with Sunset Heating and Cooling.
Description of Work: We have a 20 year old Carrier Heat Pump with Electric Backup that Sunset installed 20 years ago. This is the first repair on the unit which is built like a tank. Prior to this repair was only routine annual maintenance checkup and cleaning. They repaired a freon leak and added about 5 pounds of freon and also did the annual maintenance checkup and tuneup which is $150 of the total cost. The repairman was really thorough, polite, and clean. Heat pump really heats well now. We need to replace this Heat pump because freon becomes against the federal laws in 2010.

I ASKED THEM TO GIVE ME AN ESTIMATE FOR INSTALLING A HEATING SYSTEM IN THE GARAGE AND TOLD THEM THE UNIT I HAD IN MIND, BUT THAT THE CITY PERMIT DEPT. SAID I COULDN'T PUT IT IN, THEY SAID THEY WOULD TALK TO THE PERMIT DEPT. AND WERE SURE THEY COULD GET IT THE OK FOR THE INSTALLATION. AS IT WAS I FOUND AN ALTERNATIVE THAT DIDN'T REQUIRE A PERMIT AND WAS LESS MONEY, BUT OTHERWISE I WOULD HAVE HAD THEM DO THE WORK.

The guy came out right on time, but had a little bit of a fit about how I didn't have venting for the stove, and said he'd install the line but that I was going to have a major code issue if I didn't also install venting (a hood or a fan or something) to the outside, and of course offered that his company would do the work. A fiasco and a half later with scheduling them, I found out via another company I had out for an estimate (and confirmed with a city inspector) that there is _no_ such code issue. I felt that, although they did a nice (albeit expensive) job with the gas line, they were dishonest or at the very least didn't have their facts straight at all.
