I called Robben & Son to get a transformer replaced on a furnace in a hurry. They took the model number of the furnace over the phone so they could find the right part. This a rush job because the furnace needed to be working for the sale of the property. A workman showed up on time (in less than 24 hours of my first contact with the company), fixed and cleaned the furnace. He gave a good explanation of the problems with the furnace. The whole interaction was handled by phone. I came to the house that evening and the furnace worked great. I was very please with both the quality and speed of there work.

We've used Robben and Sons several times and have always been happy with their service. Today Bruce came and serviced our A/C system. He was punctual, arriving on time and calling 30 min before arriving. He put shoe covers on inside the house, which is appreciated. He gave a clear explanation of what he did and what he found, including recommendations for when to change the air filter.

I was able to get the appointment in less than 24 hours, Scott called ahead to confirm the appointment and was on time for it. He clearly explained everything he was doing (I ask a lot of questions). I really appreciated that when he saw that we have kids, he put a protector on the valve to keep it covered until we get the grill in place since he applied a blue lubricant to make the hook up easier.
Description of Work: Visit was to check the pressure of the gas line going to our deck so we could confirm the hook up there would allow us to purchase a natural gas grill (vs propane). Scott got on the phone for me with the folks at Weber grill to confirm what was needed, also tested the pressure on our main furnace and ended up adjusting our pressure on our main line by the meter. Cost of visit included $60 for 3 years of yearly furnace maintenance visits.

Well handled; on schedule, no issues determined - amiable, personal service by Sam Snell.
Description of Work: annual air conditioning and gas furnace tuneups Update: 2 days after the technician performed this work, I turned on the furnace. It would not ignite. I called the service provider and asked to have the tech come back and repair whatever he did that disabled what had been a good functioning gas furnace. The tech came over, found that he failed to hook back up a small plastic tube, and it worked once again. My beef is not with the work, itself, but the somewhat cavalier attitude of the scheduler and her inability or unwillingness to provide me with a narrow, specific time frame for the return service call. I blew off an appointment that day to hang around and wait for the service tech to come and repair his mistake. It seems to me that a call like this might enjoy some priority scheduling. Not the case.

As I said previously the tech showed up on time and went right to work. He was quite tidy and brought drop clothes with him to protect my hardwood floors. He either had "booties" on his feet or removed his shoes. He answered any questions I had and also gave me feedback on the conditions of my vents. One hour prior to completing the job he called to schedule his pick up. His helped showed up about an hour later and assisted in loading up the equipment. I paid for the services and they were off. Nice professional crew.
Description of Work: This review encompasses two separate visits and two different services. Visit number one: I called to inquire about a service plan for my furnace, electronic air cleaner and air conditioner. I was quoted a ,price and decided to book an appointment. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that they were available the very next day. I was given a time range as to expect the tech. He called about 20 minutes prior to his arrival. He arrived on time and went right to work. He checked the furnace and cleaned the EAC. He also asked me about my habits in regards to furnace usage and made some energy saving suggestions as well such as closing the fireplace damper when not in use. He said this would save me money on my natural gas bill because a lot of heat escapes through the chimney for example. I had also asked about duct cleaning and he provided me with an estimate. I agreed to schedule the service and he called the office and scheduled it for me on the coming Thursday (two days later). Review of that follows below. Visit number two: Air duct cleaning. The tech showed up on time with a helper who assisted in unloading the equipment and the left with the van. The remaining service man commenced with the cleaning process which involved unscrewing the covers to all of the vents and vacuuming out each vent with some sort of special device which had a brush attached. After he did this he made some adjustments using the thermostat and heading toward the furnace to complete his task. The whole job took about 4 hours.

My furnace went out, and so I had to wait a few days since it was the weekend. I detected a problem on Saturday evening, and they told me to wait until Monday but I still haven't heard anything from them. I was disappointed that I had to wait since I'm on their savings program.

Response from Robben & Sons Heating Inc
Dear Member, Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate the opportunity to address your concerns. We sincerely apologize that you had to wait to have your furnace repaired. After reviewing your account, I see we did respond as soon as possible due to the fact your call requesting service came to us after 10pm Saturday evening and we dispatched our technician to your home that night. Upon diagnosing your furnace, it was found your furnace required a manufacturer specific part. First thing Monday morning we called the manufacturer, Lennox, and they did not have the part locally. We decided to next day air it to us without passing the extra cost on to you as a courtesy due to your situation. This was not anticipated; however, we did our best to ensure you were comfortable as soon as possible. We understand repairs can often be stressful situations especially when they are unexpected. We hope all is comfortable now that your repair has been completed. Please accept our token of apology which should reach you by mail in the next couple of days. Should you have any other feedback, we’d love to hear it. Thank you again for this opportunity to serve you. Robben & Sons Service Team

We've used them over the last couple of years. They have always done excellent work for us. They have always been very responsive when we've called. We've had the owner out to the house when we were changing our heating system. It is a little family run business and they like to do good work. My wife did quite a bit of research when we replaced the furnace and they did some innovative things and were much better on price than the others. Their quality is very high. They did some things on the tankless water heater that the original installer didn't do. They called us back on a weekend. He said he would be here between 9-noon and he gave me a call and was here at 10:30. They were very professional.

Our 1914 Colonial was packed with family. At about 10 pm on Christmas Eve after cleaning up from a dinner for 12, we noticed our Buderus boiler was not working and we had no heat or hot water. Robben & Sons had installed our entire heating and hot water system about 1.5-2 years ago and was great to work with at the time, and they have been responsive when we had questions or needed maintenance. However we were nervous to call for service in the middle of the night -- especially on a holiday. After my husband tried unsuccessfully to diagnose and fix this problem himself, we reluctantly gave in and called Robben & Sons. We felt horrible bothering them since it was nearing midnight on Christmas Eve. However, their call service put us in touch with the owner, who talked to us and then arranged for a technician to come out. We apologized to all, but they were all very gracious and did not complain or seem put out (even though dealing with our issue was the last thing they probably wanted to do in the middle of the night on a holiday). Not unlike Santa, technician Keith appeared at our door and worked on troubleshooting our nonfunctioning boiler until about 1 or 1:30 am on Christmas morning. Most of our guests were asleep and had no idea the house had no heat or hot water. He called the owner Paul and reported the finding that our igniter was not working and a new one would be needed. Unfortunately, Buderus is a European company, and we were hopeful that a part could be found locally, since we didn't want to wait to have it shipped. First thing on Christmas morning, Paul called contacts directly at home and found a company based in Seattle that had the part here in Portland. He then drove out, picked it up, and at about 1 pm on Christmas Day (as about a dozen family members huddled around the fireplace and space heaters trying to stay warm), he installed the part and checked to make sure everything else was working smoothly. We've only paid for the initial service call ($75) and have not been charged for the part or the time the owner spent calling around, picking up the part, or delivering and installing it. (It might have been subject to the warranty because it sounds like defective igniters are rare.) We -- and all of our extended family staying with us -- were so thankful to have heat and hot water back. Our family gave Paul a standing ovation when he announced the problem was fixed. It was a wonderful Christmas gift for all, and I am so glad we chose Robben & Sons initially for our heating system installation. We couldn't have asked for more exceptional service / follow-through on our initial investment.
Description of Work: Robben & Sons saved our Christmas. They came out in the middle of the night on Christmas Eve to diagnose the problem with our boiler, then on Christmas morning called contacts to locate and arrange for pickup of the necessary part, then installed it mid-day on Christmas so that we (and our extended family who was staying with us) would have heat and hot water.

Issac arrived earlier than planned (fantastic), presented himself in a very professional manner, assessed our problem, fixed the heater, answered all my questions, took a look at our A/C (per my request) and completed the job within an hour. He left everything in order and provided us with a complete explanation of services and professionally answered every one of my multitude of questions. We will be calling Robben & Sons for a check of our heating and A/C in the spring AND will request Issac. Very happy and will recommend to our friends
Description of Work: Our heat went out on a Wednesday night. Looked on Angie's List and found Robben & Sons. Called the number that evening and Robben & Sons sent a service person (Issac) out the next morning by 9:30A. They offered to send someone that evening, but we elected to wait until the next day.

Though Robben and Sons did their best, I was still stuck with a system that never should have been installed in this house, and the thought of having to wait a minimum of 10 days just to get parts in the middle of winter was the tipping point that caused me to decide to ask about having a different system installed. In September, Robben and Sons installed a Bosch Boiler and tweaked it with a small back-up water heater to prevent the cold-water "sandwich" that happens in big, old houses. The cost was $9,867.00. What I value most about this experience is the knowledge that, whatever happens down the line, I can call (503) 238-8849 and wait to hear, "Robben and Sons Heating."
Description of Work: In late summer of 2008, I replaced the ancient oil furnace in my 1906 house with a gas-powered high efficiency combined boiler/hot-water heating system. I had been a customer of one of the oldest and largest oil companies in the area for over 35 years. They had expanded to offer gas furnaces, and being totally ignorant about such things, I went with the system they recommended. I later discovered the company was not on Northwest Natural's list of certified contractors. The nightmare began on January 10, 2011, when the boiler shut down for several hours. Then a couple of days later the boiler wouldn't stop. Omitting pages of details here, the bottom line was that the oil company abandoned me. Finally, after about 36 hours, I called Northwest Natural, and within minutes the service manager from Robben and Sons called. After only moments, I was flooded with relief. Whatever was wrong, I was no longer alone. Much turned out to be wrong. The technicians from Robben and Sons had to educate themselves about the system because it came from Canada, and very few had been sold in this area. Two things they learned were that the system was not intended for a dwelling larger than a small condo or apartment (my house is an uninsulated behemoth on a windy hill); and replacement parts had to be ordered from Canada and, because of customs, could not be obtained in less than 10 days. It took many weeks before the system was fully operational, during which I had the opportunity to become acquainted with Robben and Sons' people, procedures, and policies. Their 24-hour service line is for real. And the service manager keeps track of all works in progress. Paul Robben, the owner, is involved in the jobs and serves as trouble-shooter. Employees work well together. Extensive notes are kept and shared. Technicians are truly considerate of the home and the people (and dog) who live in it. I am not able to rate the cost of the service because I was in no position to shop around. I am satisfied that I was treated fairly.

I just recently bought my house and the furnace started acting up. I didn't know who initially installed it at first so I contacted the furnace manufacture. They gave me two HVAC company contact info. Both of these companies, quoted me about $95 an hour just for the diagnoses. I didn’t feel comfortable with either of them and started searching around the house for the original installers of the furnace. I then saw on the thermostat Robben and Son's contact info and called them. They informed me they were the one that installed the furnace and apologized their service sticker was no longer on the furnace. They quoted me the same price as the other companies, but since they were the ones who routinely serviced the furnace, their service records indicated the furnace was due for a cleaning anyways. They stated their charge for an annual cleaning was $149 and that I was better off to pay for the annual service then just a diagnosis. They stated diagnosis generally does an annual cleaning. They even told me to sign up to Angie’s list to get the $50 coupon which then would make it the same price as just having a diagnostic charge.

Scott performed a tune up on our Carrier Infinity gas furnace. He was obviously knowlegable about what he was doing and did not mind that I watched over his shoulder the whole time. He answered all my questions and was patient with me bending his ear while he worked. They called ahead of time to let me know when he would arrive, which is nice. Overall great service. I got the name of this company from a neighbor. I had called various companies and received price quotes and names of systems. I wasn't too happy just picking a name from the phone book, so that's why I asked a neighbor. They were happy with this company so I called them. They came out...went over all the brochures etc. and answered any questions I had. I decided to go with a high - efficient heating system, as I then qualified for a federal rebate. They came out...took the old unit out and replaced the heating system. They cleaned out the duct work (which I'm sure never was done prior to me purchasing the house). They installed a new thermostat and explained how to use that and suggested the settings. This was a necessary purchase. The furnace in the home stopped working and winter was approaching. They showed up when they said they would, installed the new system, took away the old one and cleaned up after themselves. The price was established prior to the work, so there weren't any 'adjustments'. Robben (the company) filled out the rebate papers I needed for my tax deduction, and gave them to me. I was satisfied. The unit works great. My home was warmer and at a lower setting. I'm only sorry that I didn't replace that clunker a few years before that!!

Our A/C stopped producing cold air, so we searched Angies List for a well rated provider, and found Roben and Sons. They were able to send a technician quickly at a convenient time. We used a coupon that they offered on Angie's list which helped with the on-site service call fees. Part markup was high but he had it with him and you do pay for that convenience so we expected that. Technician was among the best we've encountered anywhere...friendly, polite, knowledgable, professional....absolute perfect job. He was very honest and did a really great job explaining our options and giving us his opinon on the condition of the unit...which helped us decide how to proceded. No attempt to upsell something that wasn't needed. Because of this, we will definitely call Robben & Sons again...they did a great job for us at a reasonable price. Angie's List works!!!
