The process went smoothly. Ed and his crew were easy to work with. I appreciated Ed's flexibility when I needed something changed from our original plans. Crew was most helpful removing very heavy large planters from the old deck Ed has vast experience building decks. Clean up each day could have been a little more thorough, but I am a bit anal. Wish all my building projects went this smoothly.

I had been wanting to build a deck just inside the crawl space for years, because it was a mess down there. We stored garden tools, lawn mower, etc., but every time we walked in there, the ground was so uneven that it was hard to maneuver, and we were tearing up the black plastic ground cover from repeated use. There had also been some flooding that occurred after extremely heavy rainfall. I had that problem solved by Drainage Masters (see my review on their excellent work). I designed a deck with an irregular footprint that followed the contour of the excavated area so that it could be built without having to do any additional digging. My original drawing specified 2x6 deck boards. Ed had the idea to use exterior grade plywood. Not only would it be less costly for labor and materials, but it provides a surface with no gaps. If you lose something between the deck boards, there's no way to retrieve it. The top of the deck was to be flush with the top of the concrete footing at the point of entry. The actual construction was complicated by the fact that the concrete footings were quite irregular--not straight, not level, and not square. So, it was challenging to find a good reference point from which to start the layout. Ed and his helper did an excellent job of dealing with these challenges. The end result is a solid surface on which we can walk, store garden tools and supplies, and not be tearing up the plastic ground cover. I wish we had done it sooner. It's a great utilitarian addition.
Description of Work: Built a deck in the "crawl space" of our house. I use the term "crawl space" in quotes because there is over 8 feet of headroom, and a full size entry door, but it is the bare earth area under the main floor of the house.

We have a sliding glass door off the back of our house which led to a landing that was pulling away from the house. We wanted to replaced it with a 9x10 composite deck with 3 steps. Our previous landing had been built incorrectly. It was basically a table that was nailed into the house with out any flashing. Ed was extremely courteous and punctual. I loved how fast he responded to my phone call. Ed Gause Construction was about $100 more then Losli Fence and Deck's bid, plus Ed Gause gave us a sample that was TimberTech XLM. I have read a lot of reviews like this one: http://www.deckmastersnw.com/blog/which-composite-decking-is-the-best/ that say the XLM delaminates and turn chalky white. According to the article, things have greatly changed, but it didn't recommend using XLM at all. When I asked Ed about it, he said it was fine now. I read too many articles that said otherwise about the XLM version. I am wondering if Ed is best when using wood, not laminate. We went with Losli Fence and Deck and are very happy with our deck. We even added an extra step and a couple of LED deck lights.

Ed built stairs for our back deck. He did exactly what he said he would do and the stairs are just beautiful. He made the railing and posts match the ones on the deck(beautiful work) and also pre-stained the wood so we could enjoy them right away. He also reinforced the railing on our existing deck. He and his help worked fast and professionally. We are so pleased with his work. He also answers his phone when you call. His customer service is top notch. He even called to follow up and make sure we were satisfied with his work after he was done. He will be the first one we call when we need work done in the future. We highly recommend him.

Ed was very prompt in meeting me during a short time when our rental house was turning over tenants. I appreciate that he met me at the property on a beautiful Saturday afternoon (because that worked well for me). We went over the work to be done, he took the measurements and we had a lovely visit. He's a very nice and professional man. He called his estimate to me by Monday and by that Thursday our small railing and step project was complete. He even texted me over pictures, a very nice and thoughtful touch. I will be using Ed's services for sure in the future. Thank you, Ed.
Description of Work: Ed and his crew installed a railing on an already existing composite deck at our rental house. They also installed an extra step on the same deck. I was afraid someone would stumble or misplace their footing on our slightly elevated deck and wanted something a little safer for our tenants.

He was wonderful to work with. We met on several occasions to discuss design and timeline. We really appreciated the meeting which he arranged at the lumbar yard to look at the various material options. It was so nice to see those things in natural light and not just on a computer screne. His crew is incredibly professional. They work so quickly and the job is just top notch spectacular. I felt so comfortable asking for exactly what we wanted and he was so accomodating and pleasant. It was a treat to work with such an experienced and knowledgeable builder

We had some storm damage to a railing that surrounds our back deck. Ed was recovering from major surgery, so we were happy to wait a couple of weeks for him to get back on his feet in a professional sense. Ed came by to look at the challenge of doing a repair that looked good as well as being as attractive as the original installation. He spend a half hour inspecting the damage and taking measurements. Within a day or two, Ed had researched what was necessary in terms of hardware brackets. The following day, he phoned to say that he was ready to go to work. The project went forward without any problems. Ed has an "old-fashioned" commitment to quality and craftsmanship. I cannot say enough good things about our experience with his firm. And, to add icing to the cake, Ed has a great personality and a wicked sense of humor.
Description of Work: Ed and his helper (I think it was "Larry') installed a bracket on our deck railing. They re-assembled the partially damaged railing components to restore our railing to a status that was structurally sound and visually appealing. The work was done with care and the job even came in "under bid."

Ed and company did a very good job with the odd geometry of my entryway. The door and window needed some custom work. They were fast, but did well crafted work with very good materials, (in poor weather). I've already received compliments on the work and materials from others. The additional railing on my deck was not in my original plan. (It wasn't necessary, based on the elevation of my deck.) But the first section that Ed built looked so good, I couldn't resist adding the rest.
Description of Work: Installed two sections of hand-railing to deck. Replace exterior door with new custom ordered door and hardware. Replace picture window with custom window. Replace trim and weather stripping.

Ed Gause, owner of Gause Construction, saved my sanity. In late September, 2014, we had our front porch rebuilt by another contractor. When he was finished, nothing on the porch met Oregon Code. We had steps from 4 inches to 9 inches tall. People kept tripping and I was really concerned about liability. Oregon code says no step can be more than 3/8th inch different from any other step. It was not possible to be repaired; it had to be torn down and rebuilt and I would not even consider the same contractor to rebuild. My biggest concern about the rebuilding was that we were moving into the rainy season and I did not want my porch rebuilt without being weatherized to go through the winter. When I finally found Ed, he had the perfect solution; he would pre-stain the wood before starting the project. That would never have occurred to me because I was caught up in the idea that you stain after finishing. I had him over to see the porch and at that time I also learned that the balusters did not meet code. They are to be no more than 4 inches apart and mine were 5 to 6 inches apart. I hired Ed and he began construction Thursday, 2/4/2014. He arrived right on time with two other workers and they had the original porch down in less than 3 hours. They were all very pleasant and easy to talk with. They came the next day, Friday, Monday and were finished in a little over a half day on Tuesday. I was so thrilled. He used cedar wood with a slight transparent stain. The steps and landings are gorgeous, with nice details, and the wood smells so good. The climbing cadence is perfect; no more tripping. He will be adding a smaller, round handrail below the regular railing on the left side that meets specifications for people with disabilities. He had to special order the handrail because his supplier was out of stock. It is in now, and they will be over to install it this week. One of the really nice things they did was cover their work as they moved along. There were no muddy footprints when they finished; just beautiful, clean wood, and they were rained on hard at least two of the days they were here. They left everything spotless after they cleaned up. I cannot say enough good things about Gause Construction. I would hire them again in an instant and would recommend them to anyone!

Our front porch and back deck were so old that there were spots you could literally put your foot through. I got three different bids. The person with the most expensive bid also seemed the least experienced. Another person bid nearly 50 percent more than Ed, but with different materials. We chose to go with Ed, and I'm so happy we did. He scouted around until he could get his hands on 20 foot lengths of cedar so our front porch and back deck could all be long uninterrupted pieces. Our front porch sloped quite a bit, which everyone noted, but Ed was the only one to notice that the overhang sloped the same amount and that there were no signs of interior stress. Others had wanted to jack it up, which I had worried would hurt our new roof. He came up with an ingenious solution so it didn't feel quite as tilted. His crew were all prompt and professional - and amazingly, they were all over retirement age. You could tell from first to last that they knew their stuff. The process went much faster than anticipated and now we have a beautiful new porch and deck at an excellent price.

This was our first experience working with Ed Gause. He(and his team) were very courteous, punctual, and professional. They exceeded our expectations with the quality of their workmanship. Ed was very thorough from the outset, taking time to make sure he understood our needs with the new porch, and devised a practical(yet aesthetically pleasing) solution to dramatically improve accessibility. Despite the weather, the project was completed on or even slightly ahead of schedule. We are very satisfied with this first venture, and have since hired him to replace our backyard deck as well. We will also likely be working with him on our bathroom remodels, and other future projects.

I made appointment for a quote with Ed. He came out promptly and answered all my questions about redoing my deck as well as completely reconstructing the support frame and beams. About 3-4 days later he delivered a quote in person which was acceptable and I gave my approval to do the job. Due to a "hole in his schedule" Ed et al. came over and within 5 days completely revised my deck. It took 2 days for ED to reconstruct the support frame and beams, 2 days for the deck itself, and 1 day for the post and the stairs. What I really like was ED's honesty and integrity for the job and the quote as well as his experience building decks and using the materials (including the care of the deck). On a scale of 1/10 (10 being outstanding) I would give Ed and coworkers a 10.

It didn't go. We hope to have our deck rebuilt before winter, 2014. The person who originally responded to our inquiry did not follow through. We are disappointed and will look elsewhere.
Description of Work: He contacted us after we found him on Angie's List. We are interested and prepared to have our two story deck rebuilt. He said he would call back on Thursday evening August 28,2014. He never did. One of the ways my husband and I rate professionalism is the honor of following through with what was said. In spite of his 5 star ranking, customer service needs to be 100% in our minds. If he starts off by not following through, the message is, if you can't keep your word how can you keep a contract?

Ed's quote was very detailed and provided a complete bill of materials. Ed prefers to communicate directly to ensure good, clear communication. Ed and his crew of two were punctual, friendly and respectful. Very comfortable people to be around. But I tried to stay out of their way & let them work. They knew what they were doing. The wood on the new deck is a very high quality tight knot cedar. They paid a lot of attention to detail. The corners and joins of the wood is nicely trimmed. It's very solid work. I didn't realize how much the old dark rotted deck was depressing me. This bright, new, high quality outside room is quite the happy shock! Now the rest of the place will need to strive for this higher standard. I'm fine with that. I collected proposals from 4 contractors for this project. All of them are ranked very highly on Angie's list, so Ed Gause was in good company and competition for the project. (I'm usually juggling a number of construction and purchasing projects at my day job. Bidding jobs to at least 3 companies is the responsible thing to do.) Ed's proposal was the low bid, but I chose him more for his approach, obvious experience and craft. Craftsmanship, experiance (and professionalism) is what I got.
Description of Work: Replaced my dilapidated deck. Included removing the very old deck and disposing of the remains, building a new 14'x16' deck, with a 4' wide and 3' wide set of steps. Included a 4' section of rail and railing on one side of main stairs. Also included some rot repair and replacement under an adjoining section of the house, in order to provide integrity to the deck/house connection.

Ed impressed me with his immediate response to my request for an estimate and his punctuality coming to my home. We discussed my options for the deck and pretty much decided that I did not want any maintenance so I would go with the Timber Tech composite. Ed and his men removed the old deck and installed the new one in 3-1/2 days. Their overall work was very impressive and their attention to detail superb. The deck is beautiful and will give me many, many years of service. I would not hesitate to contact Ed Gause in the future for other work on my property, Ed was very knowledgeable in his field and comfortable giving me his ideas. Description of Work: I called Ed and gave him the details of what I wanted to do, a deck replacement. Based on the description over the phone, he initially said he would decline to bid because of the location of the deck. It is on a steep hill behind the house. After discussing it, he agreed to come and see it, anyway. He arrived promptly but within 2 minutes of seeing the deck, he declined to bid. But, for the next hour, he showed me samples of decking, the pros and cons of each, showed photos of decks he had done and offered to arrange a visit at a home he had recently completed. I also had several questions on railings and he gave great ideas that I never knew existed. And all this knowing he wasn't going to bid! He then gave us a contact to get other reputable contractors to bid the job. I was very sorry he declined , completely understood his decision.

Ed and his team did a fabulous job! He was always very prompt to return phone calls when we were in the estimating stage. I really appreciated this as the deck in it's collapsed state was quite a hazard and it needed to be fixed quickly. He and his crew were always on time, they were polite and friendly, and they worked hard. They left the work area clean and tidy everyday, and did a great job cleaning up at the end, something I've not always had a good experience with when working with other contractors. Their workmanship was suberb and our new deck is beautiful (and safe!). One thing I really appreciated about Ed was that he was very helpful with a few little things that were not specifically related to the project. He offered to fix a broken gate, he and his crew moved some things from the back yard into the dumpster so I wouldn't have to and he even offered to recycle a metal table frame for me. I give Ed an A+ on a job well done! I look forward to working with him again in the future.
