Not sure why Ed came out. We discussed the project over the phone and I felt he had a pretty good idea what I was trying to get done.
Description of Work: Ed Gause responded to my request for a contractor to water Proof my upper deck. Because of his inexperience in applying the required surface material, he declined to bid on the job. I am very flexible in what type of covering is applied. He recommended trying a roofing company.

Ed returned my call and set an appointment for the same day. Ed arrived on time and advised what could/should be done to improve the stability and safety of the deck. Ed furnished an estimate that day and performed the work the next morning. Ed purchased the materials and pre-cut the bracing before coming to the house. Ed and his assistant installed the braces and secured the railing within a couple of hours. Ed is a friendly professional and answered all my questions before and during the installation. I recommend Ed without reservation and would use him again.
Description of Work: Installed Angle Bracing Between 6X6 Posts underneath deck to reduce side sway. Tightened/secured handrail spindles with additional screws and secured handrail to at each end of deck.

Ed was very professional and easy to talk to. He had many suggestions on how to improve upon my ideas on what the deck and stairs should look and function. The work was completed quickly and accurately even to the small details. After the job was completed the area was cleaned up thoroughly. He also made a point to ask if everyhting look alright. I highly recommend Ed Gause for any deck work.

Ed Gauses price was very reasonable compared to some other estimates. It would have taken him only 1 day if Suburban Doors had delivered the right doors and mouldings. I have used Ed before and he has always done good work.
Description of Work: Ed Gause widened 3 interior doors in my home for my wife's wheelchair. I was very satisfied with his work. He also patched a hole in the ceiling in my garage and installed a trim piece in my family room.

The work was done ahead of schedule and under estimate. Ed carefully explained every step to us along the way. Due to the severity of the problem, we had to get a report from a structural engineer. Ed worked closely with the engineer and we now have a decking system that is safer and sounder than the original. Ed was exceptionally professional and we would call him in an instant if we needed his services again.
Description of Work: Our two-level deck had settled 4-6 inches and was pulling away from the house. Stairs between decks had unevenly settled as well. Decks were jacked up, shims inserted, deck was made level, and reattached to the house. Stairwell was repaired (footings secured, rebuilt in part) as well.

We felt the project went well and was what we had expected. We strongly recommend good communication of your expectations and give clear instructions of the work you want completed. I would recommend Ed for any decking project, especially if you want to upgrade to composite decking. Our original bid was approximately $9,500 but was increased based on additional items we wanted. Additional items included an extra set of stairs with cement pad, additional cement pad on the existing stairs and the 3 gates.
Description of Work: Ed demolished our old cedar deck and replaced it with a new composite deck (Timber Tek) with a cedar and metal spindle railing system. This included expanding our deck by approximately 3 feet to include a landing and a third set of stairs with a cement pad leading to our side yard. We had 2 existing sets of stairs that were rebuilt with one having a new cement pad. We had the corners routed for a decorative touch and Ed added gates to all three sets of stairs. The deck runs the entire backside of the house and goes out 10 feet. He found some dry rot on the side of the house and fixed it. Ed also helped pull out an old tree root and helped relocate one of my favorite shrubs. Ed hauled away all the old deck and did a nice job of cleaning up after rebuilding the new deck. The deck is beautiful and we are very pleased.

I would call him on his cell phone and he would ask me to call his wife because he would be driving. I would leave a message with his wife and never hear from him. I had a tentative appointment for him to come out which he never came. I called him again and finally got him to come out and take measurements. I still have not received my estimate. It appears that he is over booked. I'm upset because he took up my time and never got back to me. If I could give any advice to future customers, pin him down on getting a commitment on doing the job.

Very prompt response to request for estimate, scheduled job very quickly, and handled all aspects of ordering appropriate materials with great dispatch. Excellent work and attention to construction detail. Communication as to when would arrive in mornings was sometimes unclear, but overall job was very professional and ethical.
Description of Work: Removed existing, dual-layered deck and hauled away from back and side of house; built new deck all one level with composite TimberTech decking, approximately 400 sq. ft. Removed old planter and shrubs. Built two sets of steps along side of house (3 steps five ft. wide) and into back yard (3 steps eight ft. wide) and small bench. Replaced and stained rotten back door threshhold.

Very well. Ed was the first we called because of his rating on Angie's List and he came out that very day on a wet and rainy Sunday afternoon. Since we had other companies bid, the process of this and of us making our decision took longer than we expected. After accepting the offer, Ed came out and clarified our desires and used a modified plan that was an amalgamation of several plans we were considering. Within the next couple days, Ed and his crew was on the job and completed it within five days, including coming out a few hours on Memorial Day. The cleanup was quick and done thoroughly. Ed was easy to work with and open to our adjustments as we went along. The only down side was that after his initial visit, Ed took too long to get back to us, to which he was very apologetic.
Description of Work: Ed and his crew bid and won our business and bid far lower than 4 other companies who bid on the project. Specifically, Ed ripped out our existing deck 20 x 12' and replaced it, then added an addition of about half that size that went up and around a water feature. Ed used 2 x 6 cedar lumber and aluminum spindles on the railing. He also built three sets of steps that greatly enhanced the accessibility of our deck with the rest of our yard. Lastly, he constructed two benches to go along with the upper extension.

Ed came over to our house the day that I called to see what we needed. After that we had a hard time reconnecting, but once we did so the job was completed within a week. The job wasn't a straightforward one so we had a hard time getting other companies interested to do the work. It was no problem for Ed, he was helped us brainstorm and offered suggestions. He was able to complete the job in two days, did great work, and his workmanship exceeded our expectations. We couldn't be more pleased. We will think of him first anytime we have another similar project.

I sent email to Ed and heard right back from him. He arrived for "look see" on time. Took a day or two to finalize his plans and give a price. He was able to get right to it on Monday & was WONDERFUL!! I would absolutely refer everyone to Ed. He is professional, friendly, knowledgeable, dependable, funny!! And so easy to work with. I found him here on Angie's list and would like to say Thank You to all who referred him-you were absolutely correct!!!
Description of Work: Added additional support to our 10x10 second story deck to prevent swaying due to small hot tub. Ed contacted an architect to make sure his work would help with the sway as the deck was already built strong enough to hold hot tub. Also, removed 3 stairs leading off our lower deck & replaced with concrete base for better support/rebuilt more secure stairs, adding one more to make it safer.

Ed is a true professional and one who cares deeply about doing quality work that satisfies the customer. He put in a new composite deck with railings and stairway to replace one that had seen better days. The entire effort was done on time, at the contracted cost, and under rather severe winter conditions. From the first day of work until the finish he and all his employees exhibited care and true professionalism in doing the job. He even removed a dead tree from the side yard that had broken and fallen during a recent wind storm. This saved me a considerable amount of money (and benefited Ed as he got to keep the lumber!), something for which I am most grateful. I would use Gause Construction again and I highly recommend Ed for any construction work needed.

We were very pleased with all of the work that Ed Gause performed. He took the time to explain the work and answered all of our questions. Before we hired Ed, we received bids from at least five other contractors. None of these contractors was acceptable due to cost, flakiness, changing bids, excessive slickness and/or attitude. What a relief it was to finally find Ed! We can't imagine anyone better than Ed for building decks. But his expertise doesn't stop there. He did a great job installing windows and the associated woodwork. Moreover, we were utterly amazed how fast, yet skillfully he worked.
Description of Work: Ed Gause removed a wood stove and its chimney and replaced them with a large 5'x6' picture window. Four aluminum-frame windows were removed and replaced with new, vinyl windows. He also tore out our wood deck and replaced it with a TimberTek composite deck. A new screen door was installed. Ed arranged for a sub-contractor to install carpeting in the living room and a vinyl kitchen floor.

Ed came for the initial bid and then did all the work himself with two other workers which I like. His work is very professional. He had to "miter" alot of edges and everything fits perfectly and looks great. He estimated when he would start and finish the deck and he was perfectly on time. He was great and the work is awesome!
Description of Work: Ed built us a new "faux" wood deck around a hot tub. He had to jackhammer the existing concrete and pour concrete footers. He also built stairs and two benches.

It was a pleasure working with Ed! Process was extremely smooth. Ed has lots of experience, and was undaunted by challenges of the irregular space. He problem-solved aesthetic aspects of the job in consultation with us, and gave us all the time we needed to make decisions as to materials, which required some extra time on his part before he could begin the job. Once he started work, he was fast, careful and efficient. When only an hour or so of work was left, I commented as to a specific spot I was ambivalent about. Rather than ignore my comment, he offered to fix it if I would mark the board I wanted changed. The result looks great!
Description of Work: Ed built a custom deck for us in a very difficult, irregular space between our house and a curving and jagged retaining wall. Deck included steps leading off on either side, and a cut-out "door" for access to crawl space under house. He arranged necessary plumbing work to be done first at very reasonable cost.

Very well. Mr. Gause came out a couple of times to talk and to measure. He was very friendly and comfortable to talk to. His work is impeccable, he's a fuss-budget (which are good qualities for a contractor), and we're very pleased with the results. His estimate was reasonable compared to a couple of others.

Ed did a fabulous job. He came out to look over the problem area first. He offered a solution we didn't know we had and saved us lots of time and money. He returned a few days after his initial visit and completed the job. All the way through he was personable and amiable. His actual time and price to complete the job were consistent with his estimate. He stayed after he was finished with the deck repair work and gave us some good ideas about a leaky door....in fact he fixed that door before he left with no additional charge to his time; it no longer sticks or leaks. We have just placed a call to have him return to do some other work for us. We couldn't have been more satisfied with the work he did or with his outstanding demeanor and accountability.
Description of Work: Replaced a rotting section of a support board under our deck. Ed was able to cut out the bad section and replace it with new wood. He caulked everything as appropriate. It looks great and is a new solid support.

VERY PLEASED with the Ed and his work. As a home owner for 40 years, you pray that each contractor is like Ed. He responded quickly to visit our house and bid the work. He was prompt, friendly and helpful in designing the job. He made valuable suggestions for the deck. After we selecting materials, he responded quickly with detailed bid and timetable. The work commenced and finished when promised. Ed and his crew were courteous, professional, and respectful of us and our property. When an item or treatment could be handled differently, Ed would ask us our preference and accommodate our desires. The deck EXCEEDED our expectations FIRST CLASS quality and workmanship. As a stickler for square corners, neat cuts, and smooth edges, etc.--there was not a single flaw. As we had just moved to Portland and did not know any contractors, we were skeptical of hiring anyone; however, Ed is a GRAND SLAM HOME RUN. We will use Ed again.
Description of Work: Ed removed the existing small wooden deck/porch (120 sq ft) and replaced it with a much larger deck (approx. 550 sq ft). The new deck is constructed of outdoor wood (support beams) with the top layer of composite decking.

Ed was very professional and did an excellent job. He returned our calls quickly and always showed up when he said that he would. He puts a lot of attention to detail in his work and uses quality material. He went the extra mile and routered all of the edges of our arbor while staying within our budget. When we first called him he was getting ready to go on vacation, but he still made time to come out and give us a quote. He told us that he wouldn't be able to begin work until he got back which would be in 3 weeks. He had so many good reviews on Angies list that we decided to wait for him instead of going with another contractor. It was well worth the wait. Our arbor is beautiful! We've eaten outside every evening since it was built.
Description of Work: Ed made us an arbor/pergola to cover our patio. It is about 16' x14' Made with 4x4 pressure treated posts and angled supports, 4x10 main beams and 2x6 cedar beams set 9 inches apart with a decorative edge.

When I looked through the list, Ed was the only one who had consistent "A" grades across the board, so I gave him a call. He returned my call the same day and we set up a time to meet. On the day of the meeting he showed up right on time, assessed the job, and gave me a recommendation of how he would fix the problem. I was impressed by the fact that he was looking beyond just replacing the rotten wood, but rather how to prevent the situation from happening in the future. Ed sent over a contract, and after agreeing on the scope of the job and cost he was to do the job the following day. Again, he showed up on time and completed the work in a timely manner. When I saw the work, I was very pleased with it. Overall it was a great experience, and I would definitely hire Ed again. He is easy to deal with, and conducts himself in a professional manner.

Ed came to my house and offered a very competitive bid. He wasn't all that prepared. He had no examples of wood to show, no additional ideas on how to possibly improve the look of the deck. He also missed the fact that the height of the deck would require a step by code. I'd use him for a very basic job, but I ended up choosing another supplier
