Ed was a pleasure to work with. He came out to the house three times before project start to confirm details. He used beautiful tightknot cedar lumber. Deck is beautiful and experience was great. Would highly reommend.

Ed came out on a rush basis and removed a doggie door in our garage wall and replaced it with cedar siding on the outside, and 2 x 4 studs and sheetrock on the inside. He did a great job, as usual. He also repaired some disconnected vent tubing in the attic leading from a bathroom to the roof.

Ed was fabulous to work with from the get-go. He came to our home to look at the deck and get the information he needed to submit a bid. First off, this was a project we didn't want to do, but had to do as the old decking was falling apart. Ed made this experience a very postive one. He was sensitive to our budget and consistently looked for ways to keep costs down. In the end the project came in significantly under bid, and we were thrilled. Ed and his crew were consistently punctual and reliable. The project went quickly and smoothly. Ed has a great sense of humor and an unwaivering committment to high standards in his work. He kept us abreast of any changes as the project proceeded. When he felt the supports for the walkway along the side of the house had been done incorrectly originally, he proposed correcting the construction and took the extra time to do so, for which we are grateful. Ed is honest and fair. As further testimony to Ed's committment to quality is the example of the caulking for our deck: When the color of the caulking Ed was going to apply wasn't exactly right, he did not compromise, but instead sought out the perfect match. The end result is a beautiful and durable new deck which we are already enjoying. Ed and his crew did a fabulous job. They were a delight to work with and we'll be contacting Ed Gause for all of our home construction needs in the future. We can't recommend him highly enough!
Description of Work: Ed and his crew removed our old decking and installed new Timbertek decking. He rebuilt the supports for the long walkway of our wrap-around deck so that the boards would run vertically rather than horizontally, giving a much better look. The decking included stairs with a lower landing that Ed discovered had settled significantly so that the deck boards no longer made contact with the supports. Ed and his crew jacked up this area and redid the supports so all is solid again. We were concerned about a trellis we had installed ourselves on the deck. Ed agreed to remove it and replace it when the deck was redone, which he did. He also carefully removed our installed drip system with as few cuts as possible and labeled the end of each piece, putting like markings on our house so that we could reinstall the system easily when the new deck was complete.

Ed submitted the engineering drawing for us and also went back to the City on multiple occassions to obtain a permit to construct the back deck adjacent to our house. When another contractor was going to begin work on siding our house, Ed went to demolish the old deck on a weekend and applied flashing to support the other contractor. Ed & his friend Larry constructed the deck in inclement weather and did a tremendous job. They were both punctual, professional and delivered a quality job for us. We are extremely happy with our new deck and would without hesitation recommend Ed Gause to any of our friends as he without doubt went above and beyond our expectations and delivered a great piece of work that will benefit us for the long term.
Description of Work: Remove existing deck from the back of home; construct a new deck 20' long and 14' out from the house; cut a new footing in concrete and two additional footings. Each footing to be 18"sq x 12" deep. Each footing to have a heavy duty bracket cb44; all joist to be 2x12 pt(pressure treated) with 2x12 outdoor wood rim; install new beam 4x10 pt with pc44 connectors to pressure treated posts; install new timbertex pvc xlm sandridge decking. install decking with hidden fasteners; install new handrail with clear cedar 4x4 posts and cedar top & bottom rail out of tk(tightknot) cedar. topcap to be 2x6 tk cedar; use metal spindles with customer to pick out color; secure permit from city of lake oswego; clean up premises and haul away old deck.

Excellent. He is open to a detailed conversation to ensure you are getting your needs met. I was nervous about using the composite materials instead of wood due to stories about warping. When I discussed it with him, he took the time to ensure he had the proper manufacturers installation specs and did it the right way. He showed up on time, did a great job. That's why I used him again and would continue to. He's very trustworthy. If there is any little issue, he will make it right. A workers shoes had left scuff marks on deck. He came back and cleaned it off. He aims to please. Very quality oriented.

Ed built 2 of our decks so we were already comfortable and familiar with his work. We wanted to get 3 of our doors replaced in our current remodeling effort and just happened to mention to Ed about getting them done and he suggested an idea that we thought was unusual but appealing -- get the entry door painted by an auto body shop for a long lasting, durable, and great quality paint job -- for this reason, we decided to ask Ed to install our doors. We ordered our 3 doors from a supplier Ed was familiar working with. One of the doors took longer to order due to its size not being readily available, so we received our 3 doors from the supplier with the 3rd one being a temporary door for the time being. Ed asked us to pick out a color sample of our choice so we went to Home Depot and picked up some red color samples. We opted with the Martha Stewart brand Ladybug Red color. Ed handled all the arrangements with the auto body shop to have the door painted, including door transport to and from the auto body shop. Ed installed the 2 back doors to our deck without any glitch while the entry door was at the auto body shop. It took only a few days for the door to be painted so Ed and his friend, Larry, picked up the door and brought it back to our house to be installed. Our entry doorway was not exactly even on both sides of the frame, but Ed managed to make it not so obvious. The newly painted entry door is just beautiful and was beyond what we expected. We are so happy to have taken Ed's suggestion on having it painted by an auto shop. The door does not even look like it's been painted since the color absorbed into the door so naturally -- we had it done with satin finish. We are extremely happy and glad that Ed installed our 3 doors and provided the additional service of having the entry door painted by an auto body shop. It was worth every penny.
Description of Work: (1) Removal and installation of 2 old exterior doors to back deck and 1 main entry door (2) Transported and arranged for new entry door to be painted by an auto body shop (3) Install new door handle set and locks

In November 2009, Ed was selected out of three bids based on Angie's List. It took him a couple of days to get back to me, and probably a week and a half or less to get me a bid, which was OK. I selected him because he was licensed, had good references on Angie's list, and actually submitted real paperwork via mail with the bid with clear description of the job as well as two options for finish. Unfortunately, when Ed originally went out to check out the job and bid on it, he went to the wrong house and so when he called me up to explain we were both extremely confused. This made me concerned that he was walking around someone else's house and that perhaps the work he was going to eventually do may be at someone else's house! However, after he finally found my house, he provided me a bid as explained above. I highly recommend making clear your location and having him repeat it to avoid wasting time. It had taken me about 2 months to gather the funds for the job and for me to make a decision, so after that time I called Ed and told him he was selected and to start work. He told me that he was working on a deck and that he would try to get to my job quickly after that. I told him the main thing was that I needed to give my tenants plenty of notice and also they would need to be able to enter and exit the house. He said fine. I also told him that the issue with the stairs was a safety concern that they would rot through and injure a tenant. Several weeks passed, and then a full month passed. I can't remember how much time total had passed but I was getting a little perturbed as there was radio silence. I was extremely busy so didn't have a chance to 'check in' and hate doing that anyway given that I'd already signed the contract. After at least more than a month, and maybe more, his 'assistant' called me on Friday I believe and said he was ready to start on Monday and needed an answer right away as he needed to purchase the wood and prepare it. I was taken aback as I needed to give my tenants warning and also that there was some presumption there that I'd just schedule it without providing feedback. So I told the assistant that I was unhappy because I'd not heard from him in so long, and she apologized. I also said I really don't know if I can schedule for Monday as I need to check with tenants. After we finished discussing all of this, she said Ed would call me immediately, and to his credit he did. I told him again I was unhappy and he apologized professionally and said the deck job he was working on had taken much longer. Still frustrated, I told him that he should plan on doing the job, but I needed to contact my tenants. He agreed to this. He said he would start at 8:30 am Monday, which I thought was reasonable. He said he would finish in a day. I was pleased to hear that. I reminded him again that the tenants needed to enter and exit the building, so a plan needed to be in place for that. At that point he laughed and said, "I'm not sure what to do about that, maybe a ladder." I had no idea what that meant, but that definitely made me concerned that he was going to ask my tenants to climb down a ladder to exit the house. Because I needed the job done, I went ahead with it but was nervous. He said he needed power. He volunteered to call my tenant and schedule with them, which I was pleased with. He did not close the loop with me but that was fine because I told him just let me know if issues. In hindsight probably closing the loop on that would have been more professional. On Monday, I was unavailable to meet him there and received no call from him that he was starting but was praying he was (I'd had bad luck before of no-shows from other contractors, so I didn't know what to expect. At the end of Monday after work I called him up and he said, "Oh I'm already done." I had asked him if he'd been able to repair the loose rail as well (we'd verbally discussed this) and he said he tightened it. He said the stairs looked different (I assumed he was talking about stained versus gray paint like the porch). I got nervous but then he said they looked great. He asked if I could pay for the job (he required no down payment) to which I said yes. He also said that he talked to my neighbor about my fence which had fallen and given me his number as well as some suggested next steps on that. I was appreciative. I was not able to see the house until two days later due to work and I wanted to see it during the light before I wrote the check. Unfortunately work was crazy so I eventually went over there in the dark and it looked fine. The rail was also more secure and I had new stairs. I promptly paid him. In the contract, please state a real hard start date and express the importance of good communication and follow up. That is the only axe I have to grind. The work was professional, it was clean. I will also check with my tenants to make sure he was professional to them and report back.
Description of Work: We had sagging front porch stairs in a complicated location. The job was to remove th existing stairs from the home and replace. The job required using pressure treated wood and building a new set of stair jacks to match existing. He was to install new step boards and risers out of red maranti. Each board was to be routered on the front edge of each step to help reduce splintering. He was also to install a safety strip on the front of each step to help reduce slipping. He was to pre-drill each step and anchor with stainless steel screws. He was also to clean up premises and haul away to recycler.

We had an extremely old back deck and front porch deck that had to be replaced. We contacted Ed after reading a lot of great reviews on him on Angie's List and he showed up as promised to provide us an estimate. For this review, I will only cover the work performed on the front porch deck since the back deck work is on hold until some other construction work on our house has completed. We did not hesitate to sign a contract with Ed after he presented to us in detail the work that he would do. His cost was very reasonable. Ed started on the demolition work of our front porch deck on a Saturday but encountered an unexpected surprise when he removed our old deck. Underneath there was an old cement step porch that needed to be removed altogether. This was not in the original scope of work, but we asked Ed if he could remove it for us before building the new deck. Ed went and rented a jackhammer and worked really hard to remove the old stairs and hauled it all away. He came back on Monday and Tuesday and finished up building our brand new porch deck. Ed listened to what we envisioned our front porch deck would look like and made suggestions on what he thought would best work with the layout we had. We absolutely love our brand new porch deck. The quality is superb! Ed cleaned up and hauled everything away after the he was done as promised.
Description of Work: Removed and replaced front porch deck. Work included: Removing existing porch and steps; build a new 9'x6' deck; build 2 sets of steps on either side of deck; install handrail on both sides of stairs; and haul away of old deck for recycling.

Ed was the epitome of professionalism right from the very first meeting. He was prompt, attentive and very easy to work with. It was obvious he takes great pride in his work. He described in detail what my options were for materials and brought samples. He began and ended the job right on schedule. It wasn't an easy job, either as tearing down the old deck presented some challenges. Ed's finishing touches made everything look great. I would definitely recommend Ed Gause.

Ed hand selected the lumber, routed the edges and then returned the lumber to the lumber supplier for priming and staining. He selected custom stain to match the color of the siding on my home. He and one of his associates installed the new deck facia after removing the old Trex facia boards. I'm pleased with the outcome; it turned out better than I expected. I will use Ed again.
Description of Work: Ed replaced the old, wavy Trex composite facia boards on my back deck with pre-primed and pre-stained clear cedar. It was a small job, but Ed certainly didn't make me feel like it was small.

As usual, he did a great job. The new sliding glass doors open and close perfectly, and the attention to detail that Ed showed means that everything around the doors (where the doors meet the walls and floor) looks perfect. Ed is always on-time and professional. He is a gentleman, and takes pride in his work. And what he charges is always more reasonable than the bigger contracting companies. We are glad that we found Ed (through Angie's List).

We got four bids on this project, and Ed's was neither the priciest nor the cheapest. But he spent the most time with us going over exactly what we wanted, what the alternatives were, and how he would go about solving some of the structural issues (like the fact that the post supporting the roof of the house rested on the old deck, which had to be torn out.) He was very helpful talking about material options, and we ended up with the Timbertech XLM (all-pvc) product, which is very low maintenance. To save money, he suggested cedar rails rather than using the Timbertech rails, and he took a great deal of care selecting nice-looking wood and finishing it so the rails look just terrific. The deck is supported by posts that rest outside the finished basement, and my wife requested that Ed try to reduce the number of posts needed, which he was able to do, while still making the deck rock-solid. Ed and his assistant ("Shorty") showed up exactly when they said they would every day, worked hard for a week, were really careful about the garden, and cleaned up thoroughly when they were finished. There were a few surprises along the way, but Ed consulted with us every time something came up and worked really hard to accommodate our wishes. He even took care of a long-standing problem with my garage doors. The cost was just what he had estimated. Ed was first-class all the way. He really knows his stuff and takes great pride in his work. I have no hesitation in recommending him.
Description of Work: We had the old deck (2nd floor) completely replaced with a new Timbertech deck with cedar rails. Included a new set of stairs down to the yard and some significant structural fixes.

Researched deck contractors on Angie's List. Selected 4 and received quotes. Selection criteria were: quality, price, references and whether they were a general contractor who could do subsequent projects for us if the initial project went well. Ed did well in all four categories and was the lowest bid. Ed, and his son-in-law Doug, did a great job on the deck and worked through the design issues with us. Very pleased with the results. The window replacement posed more challenges due to settling of the house, but Ed methodically worked through the issues. Again, we are very pleased with the results; both the exterior siding work and weatherproofing and the interior finish work around the window casings. Want to explain the "B" rating for responsiveness. This is not a knock on Ed, but just a note to others that he's basically a one-man outfit. Sometimes he takes more than a day to get back to you. It never posed a problem for us or the project, but just thought I'd set folks' expectations. Bottom line: quality work, fair price, nice person and someone we will use again for our home improvement projects.
Description of Work: Our project had two elements: 1. Deck replacement - replace upper deck with tight knot cedar and aluminum rail spindles. Add small landing and stairs to lower deck. 2. Windows/Sliding Door replacement - replace large slider and 33x75 windows on either side.

Ed was great. Arrived when said. He and another fellow did a lot of work the first day and Ed himself came back the following day to finish the tasks. The deck work was fantastic. They added a new railing cap all around the deck, and leveled the deck (which involved some maneuvering and adding additional supports to the shimmed up support posts). The tightened and put extra bolts through the loose railing posts as well as shimmed up gaps. The deck feels so much better, very tight, safe, and up to code for the most part. They round and router the edges which adds a nice touch. The house will be going on the market in the spring and this work will definately make selling it that much easier. I would definately use and recommend Ed again, for all general construction (not just decks). .
Description of Work: I had a sagging deck with some looseness in the railings, and also needed to bring the spindles up to code (4 in spacing). The deck was still good and I wanted to fix it rather than tear it down and replace. In addition I had a number of boards to replace on a star landing for the deck. Lastly was to fix a large outside planter box that had started to separate.

Ed was easy to get along with, honest, and on time. He and his crew did great work. They were polite and professional the whole time. Ed did the estimate and work himself. He was flexible and helpful. Ed's prices were much more reasonable than other Angie's list contractors with whom I spoke before I found Ed on Angie's list. Their estimates were quite a bit higher. I plan to have Ed come back and do some more work for us in the near future.
Description of Work: Ed and his assistant replaced my old 8 x 30 dark, painted deck with beautiful new cedar decking. They also added a cedar railing with metal spindles to the deck. They also built a beautiful shade structure for my son's jungle gym, a structure that will also provide one wall for climbing vegetables. I told Ed what I thought I wanted, and we worked together to finalize the structure on paper.

I am so pleased with the results. Ed suggested design changes that transformed the ordinary into beautiful, while keeping my budget in mind. My family and friends who have seen the finished product are impressed by the quality of workmanship and overall design. I cannot say enough about this company-- Ed sets high standards and then delivers.
Description of Work: Our front porch and large two-story deck had dry rot and needed to be demolished and replaced. Ed responded quickly to our request for a job estimate. Once we chose Ed as our contractor, work began the following week. They kept the worksite clean during construction and after. We wanted to improve the usability of our back patio (aggregate cement) during the bright summer sun and also in the rain. Ed Gause Construction showed us examples that they had built previously and then provided a sketch of what they could do for us. Everything went perfectly - schedule, workmanship, courtesy, and overall quality. The patio cover design is excellent with three skylights which were installed professionally. Shake roof was also installed professionally. Can't say enough about this company and the people that work for them.

Very well. I had a hard time finding someone who would do the work because it required attaching the decking to a concrete retaining wall. I called several contractors and Ed called back promptly, came and gave an estimate when he said he would. The finished product looks great and (its been over a year) has held up to weather and wear quite well. A few of my neighbors who have the same retaining wall tried to copy Ed's work and I get many compliments on how the finished deck looks.

Our project was complicated and took a fair amount of planning and thought as we went along. Ed was fantastic to work with from start to finish. We were initially debating which material to use, and Ed met us out at the lumber showroom to help us decide and go through the pros and cons of different materials. We ultimately chose Timbertech which got high ratings in Consumer Reports. It looks beautiful with the cedar and aluminum post railings. Ed is extremely professional, knowledgeable, and sets the highest standard for his work. He listened to my ideas and gave good suggestions regarding the redesign of the deck and privacy fence that we added. I felt like this was truly a collaborative project, he didn't come in with his own vision and just get the job done, we were able to work together through each phase and my husband and I couldn't be happier with the result. Ed pays close attention to detail, and did a nice job finishing the edges on the deck and railings. They left the area clean each day. We love our new deck, and really enjoyed working with Ed.
Description of Work: Replaced an old rotting deck and railing (550 square feet) over our garage and carport, including replacing flat roofing material, and support beams. Due to extensive dry rot we found, he also did a fair amount of reconstruction on the front of the garage, and reframed the garage door. He also removed about 350 square feet of concrete patio and concrete steps.
