The project went very well. There were no problems. Ed discussed issues as they came up; therefore problems were never an issue.
Description of Work: Ed replaced old back deck. He removed it and designed and built new deck. Excellent professional services. Great design ideas and implementation of the plan. Punctual and adhered to work timeline. I would definitely hire Ed again.

Ed has done two jobs for me based on positive reviews on Angie's List. Both jobs were rotted stairs on porches. Both went well. He knows good wood and good design. He is slow to get you a contract but once he's ready to go it's done in just a few days. His craftsmanship is great. My girfriend said the stair rails were not built to the specifications of the other historic houses around the area, which I didn't know much about, but otherwise it looks good. Let me know if you want to see them. They are very solid. In addition, he wins major brownie points for fixing my dragging gate for free! He did this totally proactively and without fee! Thanks Ed:)
Description of Work: He got rid of the old rotting front porch stairs, salvaging what he could, and replaced the cheaper pressure treated wood with some nice hard wood.

Ed was awesome. Prompt to start, very knowledgable and worked through the rain and cold until finished. The craftsmanship of Ed's work was the best I have ever received. Ed was thoughtful and mindful of my budget and provided me with the outcome that looks extremely good on my house. I can't say enough about Ed and his partner Larry in the care they took and the speed in which they did the work. On time and on budget and a great looking project.

He showed up on time to evaluate the project and write up an estimate. He discussed options and made some recommendations. My wife and I both felt very comfortable with his experience and demeanor. He completed the work on time and with high quality.
Description of Work: Ed Gause replaced a cedar deck at our house last month. He was knowledgeable and professional. We are very happy with the desk and will enjoy it for years. We plan to use him again in about 2 years to replace our back deck and will ask him to bid on a room remodel project..

We were extremely pleased with our entire experience with Ed and his crew. He was our 3rd bid to replace our old wood deck with composite. His price was right in the middle but we choose him because he was so detailed in his measuring and time he spent with us discussing our options. I had done a bit of research on materials but, as we all know, this can be overwhelming. He helped us tremendously with our choice and we couldn't be happier! (Timbertech PVC) He predicted the job would take 4 days but they were done in 3 1/2! And it was over 100 degrees everyday! I've worked with MANY sub contractors over the years and this was without a doubt a our most positive experience. Our new deck is absolutely GORGEOUS!!
Description of Work: Our old wood deck was replaced with PVC and a couple over rotten siding boards were replaced too.

Contracted to have old deck torn down and hauled off and new one built. I am most pleased and totally satisfied with this new deck. The job was completed quickly and professionally. Ed is very easy to work with as were his other workers. The work area was cleaned up afterwards and I could not be happier with the results. Angie's List served me well.

It went beautifully. We had no weather delays, no construction delays, and everything was completed in a timely, friendly, and professional way.
Description of Work: Along with 3 other Angie's List recommended providers, we asked Ed to give us an estimate for removing a large deck and replacing it with a modern high grade cedar deck similar to the old deck. He was not the lowest bidder; in fact he may have been slightly higher than the others. But when we factored in Ed's carpentry skill, his attention to details, the quality of the materials he used, and his knowledge of the permitting needs in the City of Lake Oswego, Ed was the obvious winner. Ed promised to start within a week to allow for materials to be ordered and near the end of that week had secured the needed permit, had removed the old deck, poured the footings for the new deck, and was ready to go on the first of the following week. He told me the deck, once started, would take about a week to finish. In fact, it took four days. The new deck looks beautiful, the craftsmanship obvious, and the overall improvement to our home's value more than evident to all who've seen and used the new deck. Ed brought several co-workers and they all worked (including Ed) tirelessly for four days. At the end of four days, the deck was entirely done and ready for use. Ed and company cleaned up all the construction debris, policed the entire area for stray nails and screws, and left our back yard looking nicer than before.

Ed came out to bid my job and was patient as I changed it a couple of times before it started, due to new information. He is a super nice guy and worked with me on a complicated design/situation for steps and a walkway that went around weird angles and had rocks in its path. He did everything he could to save me money, which I appreciated. However, to keep costs down he did one thing without asking that I had to pay to have done over. Even though I prefer the look of real wood, I went with Timber Tech to avoid maintenance. But he used outdoor wood for the risers on the top step of each run of steps (for structural purposes, he said.) Then he used cedar on the faces of the other risers. I did not like the mix-and-match look (Timber Tech plus outdoor wood plus cedar), and I especially did not want to have to stain the wood - that was the whole point of going with the Timber Tech. Ed willingly made the change, but it cost me extra money and time to undo part of what was already done. The final product is very nice. Ed also rebuilt a retaining wall and figured out a way to save money there, too - this time with my concurrence. It turned out well, also. Ed works alone or with one guy, and runs his own business. He is punctual and very focused while on the job. But it can be hard to reach him or get him back for minor work, which gets a little frustrating. Instead of arranging for him to call you back, I recommend scheduling a time when you can call him (this was actually his suggestion after several missed call-backs.) One screw was stripped during installation and is sticking up about 1/2", and I am still waiting for him to come back to replace it. If it weren't a special screw, I'd just do it myself. Ed is a craftsman - a wizard with a Skil saw. And a nice person with a good sense of humor. Just be aware of the pitfalls of a one-man show. Update: Shortly after I wrote this review, Ed's assistant came and replaced the screw I mentioned. I should also have said, be aware of the pitfalls AND THE ADVANTAGES on a one-man show (for example, quality, price, no subs)
Description of Work: Installed Timbertech steps and walkway on side of house. Rebuilt wood retaining wall.

He's not an absentee general contractor, he's ON the job making sure all is A+ as he promised. They gave us payment options, tear out options, made everything easy. They were here ahead of the lumber supplies, and finished more quickly than I could have imagined and the deck's beautiful. I'm 200% happy with Ed Gause.
Description of Work: Entire deck was rotting and needed replacement. The bid placed by Ed was a bit lower than 4 others, and absolutely everything questioned about he and his crew did.

Overall it went beautifully. It took a little longer than anticipated, but that was alright because I was left with a quality product. The whole crew were polite and respectful. I had received 3 bids and his was in the middle. The first bid was unbelievably low. The other bid was much higher.
Description of Work: Ed and Co. took apart and replaced an upper and lower deck and 3 sets of stairs. As I saw, there was much more damage than originally suspected. They hauled away all the old wood, built a beautiful deck and left the premises clean.

We selected Ed because of Angie's List ratings and his price was better than the other estimate. Pros: Ed clearly knows what he is doing when it comes to deck building. He and his partner Larry work hard, quickly, and efficiently. The end result is a beautiful deck. Ed was amenable to what we wanted and did some adjustments with the stairs that we asked for. During construction, we pointed out a couple of problems that required rework which Ed was quick to take care of. Cons: Permitting problems caused Ed to spend 3 days getting approval which was not anticipated. Ed was not familiar with what the City of Portland demanded, so original plans had to be changed which added somewhat to construction costs. This was not a big issue with us, but did cause a delay getting started.
Description of Work: Ed replaced our 25 year old cedar deck. None of the old was salvageable, so we needed a complete redo. Job included deconstruction and haul-away. Size of the deck is 14'x20'. It is attached to the house. Because one end of the deck is about six feet off the ground, the city of Portland requires a permit. Ed's original estimate was $6200. Permitting increased the costs nearly $1,000. (For engineering fee, permit fees, extra materials.) The new deck was constructed with treated lumber for the framing below and pre-stained tigh-t knot cedar above. The understructure required three posts set in concrete, joists, bracing, and attachment to the house. The deck floor was built with 20 foot 2x6's and trimhead screws. Railings were done with 4x4 posts, with 2x6 boards set on 2x4s and black aluminum spindles for balusters.Job included building two steps with railings into the yard.

I called Ed to get an estimate to replace our old, rotting back deck. While others bid only to replace the top boards, Ed gave us a more reasonable bid, which included replacing both the decking and frame (undercarriage). He arrived promptly and called later that day to give us the bid. He suggested we visit Lakeside Lumber to look at the stain options to make sure we got exactly what we wanted. We chose tight knot cedar in natural Redwood (Lakeside Lumber prestains the wood). Ed and his assistant arrived on time and quickly set to work removing the old deck. By the end of the day the old deck was gone and the new framing was in place. The next day it rained, but Ed showed up to pick up some of the lumber and took it home to build our bench. The next day he and another assistant completed the deck and bench. We had also asked Ed to replace the old boards on our front porch with the same wood, so front and back would match. My husband told him to just replace the top boards, which he did. However, the old kick boards stuck out like a sore thumb from the beautiful new wood. So my husband called Ed that night and asked if he could replace the kick boards as well. Ed came over the next day and completed the work! Our deck and front porch are beautiful and we couldn't be happier. Ed is the utmost professional who obviously takes great pride in his work. His attention to detail and quality construction is not easy to find these days. We highly recommend him. In fact we already referred Ed to our neighbor who had him repair a fence that had blown down during one of our recent storms.

Ed came in with the lowest bid but also gave me several options and advice on how the benches could be installed, even explaining the pros and cons of different types of screws he could use. We decided to leave some railing up at the far end the deck to reduce the cost since the area was not very visible anyway. Ed and a partner performed the work themselves, and the only delay was because he wasn't happy with the wood selection his supplier had and decided to wait a day to get me better wood from a new shipment. The work was performed quickly and as described. Ed has also been willing to give me advice on other projects I have considered in the past months.

Ed was a joy to work with. He arrived promptly for his first appointment, gave us an estimate within a week and held to the schedule that he had predicted. He explained everything as the job progressed and built a beautiful deck. Ed and his crew always arrived promptly and worked hard until the day's work was finished. They were always smiling, friendly and pleasant to be around. It's obvious that Ed takes pride in his work, as well he should. He is meticulous and the small details that he incorporates gives you a very classy result. We would hire him again with no reservations.
Description of Work: Ed replaced our aging deck. After tearing out and removing the old decking down to the footings, he replaced the deck, repaired several thresholds and door trim, and repaired a door that would no longer open all the way.

Ed has worked for us on several previous occasions and as usually, he did a wonderful job. He listened to what we wanted and made suggestions about materials and the best way to accomplish the project. He chose materials that were in keeping with the construction of the house and his estimate was fair and accurated. He finished the work in a resonable time frame and hauled away scrap and debris from the demolition.
Description of Work: Ed removed and replaced the cedar siding on our garage. He also replaced the framing around the garage doors. He installed new outdoor lights for the entire house. Additionally he put in a new sliding door in the master bedroom. This included adding wood trim on both the interior and exterior of the door.

See above. I did not use this company. I would never recommend this company.
Description of Work: Requested a bid for a complete deck replacement (2 story, approx. 500 sq. ft.,), Ed was an hour late for the appointment. We didn't communicate well...I would ask a question, which he would start to answer, only to be completely off track within a minute of our conversation. I'm completely surprised by his high rankings on Angies List...did I meet with someone else?! It's weird. At one point he realized that he was extremely late for his next appointment but brushed it off, they can wait! Not impressive to me! I asked him about receipt of the bid, offering my email address....guess what....I have never received a bid,,,snail mail nor e-mail. You lost me from the start. I really don't see how anyone can give a good rating for this business. Scary!

I had an excellent experience! Ed aims to please. When we had a miscommunication about an angle on a step, Ed insisted on changing it to make it the way I wanted it and ordered a new board. The quality of Ed's work was also apparent with attention to details like router edges on deck, planters, and benches to help reduce splintering. I wasn't the only one who had that opinion. The driver who delivered my beautiful cedar wood which was supposed to be prestained on all four sides took part of the shipment back with him because he knew Ed would not accept it. Some of the boards had taken the stain unevenly on one side. The driver, a long time employee of Lakeside, said that Ed was all about quality calling him an artist. New boards were delivered a couple of days later holding up the work for an extra day. I would highly recommend Ed for price, quality, and desire to please.
Description of Work: Ed replaced an old cedar deck which was rotting under the wooden planters and had a poor support system. Ed built a beautiful new deck of tight knot cedar with an all new undercarriage of pressure treated wood. Ed constructed four new benches which were each an intricate pattern of eight 2x4's on edge with the ends capped. He also worked to design four planters with interiors of pressure treated wood, exteriors of cedar, and proper drainage.

Disappointing. Looking at their Service Information listed in Angies List, it indicated that Ed Gause Construction did, among other things, decking jobs in Clark County, Washington where we live. I called Ed and set up an appointment for him to look at the job. He came at the scheduled time and we spent about 30 minutes or so looking over the job. My sense was that because it was not a "big" job by his standards that he was not too sure it would be worth his trouble in getting the necessary contracting licenses to work in Washington. However, he did say that he would get back to me in a day or two with a "phone estimate" for the work involved. Never heard from him again. Would have appreciated a direct comment that the job was too small for him, or that he was too busy -- but to not have any communications back at all was, in my opinion, unprofessional.

Our deck was worn out and needed to be replaced. Ed came over, provided an estimate, and replaced the deck as scheduled. Everything went just as agreed. He showed up on time. His crew removed the old deck and hauled it away. They pored new concrete footings to hold the stairs. He looked at all the underpinnings and decided some did not need to be replaced. This saved us some money and did not compromise the integrity of the replacement. The quality of the job was outstanding. His team pays attention to many details such as rounding the corners of the handrails. The material used was top notch.
Description of Work: Removed old deck. Replaced with new deck. Also added a new stairway from the deck to the lower side yard. Ed worked with us (my wife really) to select the correct colors, styles, and materials for the deck and the handrails.
