Ed and his crew were outstanding. Ed was a pleasure to work with. He was attentive to our needs and desires to replace and downsize our 30 year old deck. Ed kept us informed regarding the project timeline. He arranged for engineers drawings and took care of the entire permitting process with the city of Lake Oswego. Incidentally, I happened to speak with the city inspector who signed off on various stages of our deck and he was very familiar with Ed and had no concerns regarding the quality of Ed's work. I feel very confined that the deck, which is elevated about 10 feet, is build in a safe and high quality manner and meets all current code requirements. Ed's was not the least expensive bid that we received for this project, but the relatively small extra expense was well worth the confidence I had in Ed and his many years of experience building decks. He did a great job balancing cost and quality and I feel that we received an excellent value with Ed. Having had some major headaches with a different contractor doing work inside our home, it was a huge relief to work with Ed as he made the entire process a real pleasure. He had excellent project management skills in addition to his deck building experience. Thank you Ed and crew!

Ed Gause and his company did a beautiful job. His company was recommended to us through a decking job that he did last year that turned out beautiful. It is difficult for us to trust that a job will be done well given that we live out of state and the work was being done on our Lake Oswego rental home. The best part about this whole process was that the renters reported that they were clean, professional, and attentive to details. They took many pictures and sent them to us at each stage of the construction. The builders actually went beyond the contract and poured a small concrete pad at the base of the stairs which was needed, but we weren't charged for it. I have just made it back to Portland, and have seen the deck and it is beautifully done. Very seldom have I been able to say that I could trust a company to do what they've been contracted to do, for the price they quoted, and not feel like I have to watch them like a hawk. I can say that about this company. Ed Gause construction is a great choice for those of us who can't be there to watch, but still want the job done to the highest standards.

Summary: Ed and his crew did a fantastic job and I highly recommend his services. I plan on using him again for another deck project in my front yard next year. I am also recommending him to my friend who just bought a house with a deck that needs repair. Details: Ed Gause Construction was one of four bids solicited for this job. He was not the cheapest, nor the most expensive. But I didn't award this based on price. I chose Ed for the following reasons. 1. He spent a lot of time with me upfront (even before the job was awarded) to fully understand what I wanted (including several follow up phone calls). 2. Experience: As we discussed my ideas, it was clear that Ed has a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience building decks and in particular using the composite decking material that I wanted to use. He knew how to achieve the best looking result with the product, including details I hadn't even considered. 3. Attention to budget: Throughout our conversations, Ed was always able to figure the costs of different options in his head, to a very detailed level. I really liked this, because it reinforced his level of experience and I was confident I wouldn't have cost "surprises" down the road. Results: My wife and I are extremely happy with our finished deck. Ed finished on schedule (even though I added some additional scope during the project). He and his crew were very friendly and considerate. They made sure the job site was clean before leaving every night and communication was excellent throughout the entire project.

Ed was here with his crew first thing in the morning. By the end of the day, our old, crumby deck was gone, and a beautiful new one was in it's place. Our old "80s deck is now a modern, attractive looking from porch. My deck is due to be replaced next, and Ed will get the job. This is old world craftsmanship with old fashioned hard work!

I was concerned about having this project done. We usually have projects done by family members, but we are all getting older, so my daughter suggested Angie's List and selected a couple of contractors to contact. Ed's bid was just about half what the other bids were for the product I wanted. I went ahead with the project, worried the entire time. I couldn't have been more pleased. The quality and workmanship was first rate. They completed the job in about 5 days and this deck will last for the rest of my life. My grandson's are already planning the deck warming party. Professional, timely, clean, and a great price....what more could I ask?

This is the second job we have had Ed do. (He replaced a cedar deck for us last year.) This job went well, completed in a timely manner and slightly under bid. Ed makes an effort to get the best quality materials. He and his assistant Larry did all the work themselves. They are excellent craftsmen. The porch and steps are beautiful. Everyone who visits complements us on the project.

Ed was very good. I would recommend him. I did not ever do the final payment because the actual owner of the home paid for it. I did not ever see the final invoice. What I liked was that it was him and one other guy that actually did the work. I had a high-level experienced person actually putting nails in the boards so it was a very high quality work.

Ed Gause and his team did a great job! Easy process throughout (bid, permits, tear down, build, and clean up). Enjoyed working with Ed and his team. They removed the old deck, hauled away all the debris and rebuilt using Timber Tech. Project was completed on time and within budget. We're very happy with our new deck.

This contractor is excellent. The price was very close to the others I interviewed but Ed was by far the most professional. Specifically: Ed returned my initial call immediately. He arrived, on time, to see the proposed project within a one day despite the distance to Vancouver WA. He was highly recommended by others on Angie's List, so I decided to work with him though he was licensed in Oregon. On the day he was scheduled to begin work, Ed and two other team members arrived on time. They worked efficiently and had the entire job done in less than two days as they had promised. They cleaned up as they went, were very respectful and responded to any questions I had along the way about the product, etc. If you want quality work, timeliness, no surprises and a competitive price, I would highly recommend this contractor. As for TimberTech XLM, which I had chosen prior to contacting the contractor, be aware that the wood deck foundation may not match the XLM in color and you will need to stain it to match. In addition, the soft black rubber on the BBQ wheels immediately stained the deck when I pulled the BBQ across the deck with one of the wheels accidentally locked. I have tried to clean it off with the manufacturer's recommended products and consider myself fortunate that we chose a dark color as I can still see the rubber. The sprinkler water leaves white mineral stains on the XLM surface. Time will tell whether this product was worth the price...I think it will be, but I am a bit skeptical at this point.

We interviewed three other contractors, two from Angie's list. We chose Ed because he was the best match in terms of the materials we wanted (non-wood composite) at the best price. Ed was responsive to calls, followed-through with his promises, and led a very capable and collaborative team of workers. During the old deck removal, Ed discovered a nest of destructive moisture ants and notified us immediately. We were able to get an excellent "green" pest removal service that day, and Ed adjusted to the treatment requirements with zero slow down to the completion schedule. Ed sealed the deck so that moisture wouldn't get in again to attract more ants. The deck was finished on time, and when we requested some finishing touch-ups, Ed came by immediately, consulted with us to make sure he understood exactly what we wanted, and the next day he and his crew showed up and made the changes. Ed's communication was professional, efficient, and it was clear he aimed to please. The deck is sturdy, the design beautiful, and is a significant improvement to our property. It almost feels like we have a new home! We are very pleased with Ed and his team, and recommend them highly. We will hire him again.

We purchased this house in December 2012 relocating from New Mexico. We were informed of a problem with the deck and the neighbors property line. We spoke with the county and received sufficient information regarding our options to fix the problem. We then interviewed several contactors and selected Ed. Where to place the new deck in order to pass code was difficult. Ed came to the house at least 3 times discussing different options. He obviously thought about our dilema a lot because he called back several times with other ideas. He drew up plans and presented them to the county. They were rejected because the information received from the county in December of 2012 was not accurate. Plus we then found out that the plat map of the house does not match where the house sits on the lot. Ed came back to us again with yet another plan, this time involving removing doors and windows in the house in order to make the county happy. He presented the plans to them again and received a permit. The deck is beautiful! He did an excellent job with the construction. High quality and great attention to detail. Same with the work he had to do with the door and window. The County inspector did not agree and did not approve the deck. One measurement off by 1/2 of an inch. Ed came over right away when we telephone him after 7 pm at night. He agreed with two of the citiations but could not understand the third. He called the County the next day and gained an understanding of what needed to be done, and is in process of taking care of the problems. We will definately use Ed for any other construction needs from new windows to new showers and baths. He is an honest, ethical man that knows construction and a pleasure to work with.

Ed is a very pleasant and meticulous person to work with. There was a communication gap initially (for which Ed apologized) but once we reconnected, Ed was right on time with the estimate as well as the project. His colleague, Larry, is also pleasant and worked well in unison with Ed to the finish. Larry was meticulous about details such as rounding the board corners to prevent from scratching when sitting. They also pressure washed the new as well as my old deck after the job was done (which was a pleasant surprise) so everything looked beaming! Ed used Timber Tech which is an expensive material but was able to keep the cost down by getting a deep discount at the lumber store (because he builds so many decks and buys large quantities) and charging less (I got 4 quotes in total, and Ed was the lowest) for the customers. He even asked if I earned miles or points for my credit card and if I wanted to pay the lumber store directly, which I did :) Ed was also honest about his specialty (deck building) and suggested using someone else for fences, which I appreciated. All in all, it was a great experience. I highly recommend Ed Gause Construction for your deck building needs!
Description of Work: Tore out 15 ft. of handrail, built a new composite deck to add on to the existing deck. Built 3-step stairs and another set of stairs made of concrete material for the other side of the deck. We interviewed three contractors and decided Ed's ideas and attention to detail were what we wanted. Once we decided, Ed and his company got to work - taking down old deck and hot tub and removing all materials from the property and then got to work on the new deck. Ed added new improvements and ideas as we went along...steps finished with railing, translucent roof with gutter over part of the deck and the deck of new TimberTech material was finished - having 750 sq. ft deck with railings all around. His crew was friendly and very efficient and pleasant to work with - they even cut extra end pieces for our grandchildren to use as blocks. It was a pleasant experience from beginning to end. In fact, we had such a good experience we have contracted

Ed Gause is a true professional who surpassed our expectations. We wanted to have a new deck installed in our backyard. I called Ed based on the sterling reviews on this site. He returned my call that evening and came to our house that weekend to show us the materials and colors available. He gave us an estimate and set a date for the following week. Ed showed up with his 2 man crew on time and was able to complete the job in 6 hours! The deck is beautiful. The final cost was less than the estimate. We are very satisfied.
