When they came in they checked the backflow valve and the clean-out areas in the line. They then cleaned out the line with a hydro-jet system. Next they put a camera in the line and checked it out, all the way to the Main Line, owned by the City of Mentor. Before they left they made sure I was satisfied with their service. I am very satisfied with Sal's Heating and Cooling Inc. overall.

Badly. This is the second time this has happened. The first was with plumbing service for winter faucets and did not receive service for the after paying for it. Some kind of mix up somewhere I assume but won't pay for service I didn't receive again Angie!,
Description of Work: Did not contact me as promised when service was purchased. You pay then they call u to set up a time. That never happened. Contacted Angie's and still no response for service. Paid $70 for nothing.

The plumber cleared the line and placed the camera in the pipe. They showed my mom what would appear, to the lay person, as a crack in the line, that she thought was clay, but it is actually cast iron. He showed her what he said was deteriorating pipes running under her basement. (sound familiar - see the other complaint by other Angies list member - I could have copied and pasted this review). He quoted $6500 to tear out her basement floor and run new pipe, etc. and he put it in writing. He did not, however, leave any pictures or videos, which was to be part of this service. My mother, of course, freaked out thinking if we did not do this immediately, her basement would flood. But this all did not make sense. She said the plumber was soooo nice and sooo sweet. She trusted him and saw the crack herself and we must do the work!! My gut told me something was not right so I hired an expert and asked my architect to meet at my mothers home, to get a second opinion....as even I know cast iron does not rot from the inside out. The expert ran the camera through the line and not only stated they did not do a complete job of cleaning the lines (which would at some point back up again if not "replaced", he found no cracks. He did share a "trick" he said many plumbers use to make ti look like the pipes are cracked. He twisted the camera in a manner that made it look cracked and asked my mom if this is what she saw, which it was a resounding yes! That was the crack she saw. It was actually a combination of where several lines come together and the dirt on the interior walls of the drain, when combined appears cracked, when it is not. What exactly was Sal's plumber going to do? Rip up the basement to replace pipes that were not broken? Or dig it up and not do anything and make it look like he did the work? Perhaps just do a better cleaning job so the lines would flow for more decades without issue as she lives alone and is 82! Bottomline: I have been caring for my mother for the last decade, and I have seen examples of service providers taking advantage of her....but nothing to this level. My architect contacted Sal's and Sal does not talk to clients. Humm...I wonder why? Through my architect, I have requested a refund of the money for this "service", and their response was no. He shared that we would let these issues be known, and the reply was that their record was so good, our complaint would not make an impact. I am wondering how an audit by the State for fraud on the elderly will rate as "not making an impact". My concern now is actually, how many elderly have been impacted by this company and their "plumbers". My fear is how many others actually get the "work" done and have dolled out thousands from their retirement to line their pockets. Now, I know why Sal does not talk to customers! My next steps are to file a complaint with the Ohio Coalition of Adult Protective Services, the Elder Abuse Commission of the Ohio Attorney General, which consists of members of virtually every State agency, including The Ohio Department of Aging and the governors office, the Ohio Department of Commerce for license review, and the Better Business Bureau as well as AARP. I am also contacting the Chambers of Commerce and will post reviews on as many sites as I can find to make sure this does not happen again. Obviously since I was not the first person to have this same issue, there are others out there. Now, it is not about money...it is about principle. If ours was a one off....I may not have taken this stance...but two reviews within 2 months with the exact issues......this has got to stop. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ UPDATE: Sal's went back out to my Mothers house to review the work effort, and their own Supervisor admitted the original work effort quoted was more than was needed. He provided a quote for work that, ironically, was identical to the plumbers I called in for a second opinion.....except much more expensive. We needed the work done, and John was such a "straight up" guy, I requested they do the work for the same cost as the other plumber, but Sal wrote a long and incredible unprofessional email to me, which was consistent with the way he works with his customers. He denied any wrong doing and wanted to overcharge me again for the work. Even after his own guy fessed up! This man in out of control.
Description of Work: I purchased a $99 main drain cleaning through Angies List as a preventative measure for my mothers house. In January they came to clean the line and were in and out in minutes, only cleaning enough to show my 82 year old mother they did the work. Last week we called them again, only 4 months later - as this time the sewer was not draining at all, so they came back out but this time wanted another $600+ to clean the drain and put a camera down the pipe.

Update from Sal 7/22/15 This is the Members Email Sal’s Response to follow, Please judge who is unprofessional. The supervisor never admitted anything only that the price to repair was a 1/3 the estimate as we are only repairing 1/3 of the sewer. She said the other plumber deserved the job in the first place. There is no wrong doing here. The only constant with my company is the A reports from understanding customers. This Member is impossible and out of control. No company needs a customer like this. Please read for yourself. Who begs to have the work done but complains in the same email? Please Member keep your $2800. I would almost pay the Member not to do the job. I rest my case. Hello [Members Name], I really struggled reviewing this quote and all that has come up from the beginning of this debacle to now. To think I would actually work with a company who was just about to take my mom for a ride, is beyond me. With this said, I do appreciate and respect the fact your plumbing supervisor, John, went out himself to review the work needed. The fact that his assessment of what was needed was actually far less than half the work/cost originally estimated proved my hypothesis was right. What was even more compelling is that the work he said was needed was almost verbatim what the plumber I brought in for a second opinion said, so I knew we nailed the work needed. The only remaining issue was the cost….and the other plumbers quote was lower. So where do we go from here? The fact is that I have spent several hours working on getting resolution to this, and have expended a significant amount of money to get to this point, yet it appears I am the only one losing here. The other plumber has his money, you get the additional business, and I am left with multiple invoices for the same services. That said, we need the work done, but I believe your organization should, at least, deduct the cost of the initial work effort I was billed by Sal’s when we got the bogus ($6,800) quote. I believe I was charged over $650. It was not supposed to be that much, according to the woman I talked to on the phone…but it was. The bottom line is that, had I received a good estimate for the work in the first place, I would have saved the time, money and effort involved in, not only getting a second quote, but also the time and frustration it took to bring this issue to the level of awareness within Sal’s, so I would stop getting blown off. The reality is that we all wanted the facts. We have them now. It is now time for your organization to make this right. First by providing whatever training, guidance, etc. is necessary for your plumbers, et al, to prevent this from happening to other folks, .....but to also make this right by my Mom.. We should not have had to go through this. At this point, I am indifferent. If you wish to do this work, please take the current quote, less the $6XX.XX and make this adjustment to the quote. Send/email it to me to sign and get it scheduled. The only reason I am even considering this is that John stepped up and was straight up with us on what needed to be done. My belief is, it is not the way you fall down, it is how you get back up/recover. He did that well – you need to keep him around!  If you choose not to make this adjustment, that is fine, as even if you deduct the $6XX.XX from your estimate, it is actually very close to the estimate we were given by the other plumber anyway – and he agreed to reduce his quote less the cost I paid for the scope. He did right by us from day one, so perhaps he deserves the business anyway. Let me know how you would like to proceed. Take care, [Members Name] Sal’s Professional Response. I just felt it was time to end the relationship. Why prolong her agony while she has never trusted us to begin with. All the complaining and in the end still begging us to do the work. Hello [Members Name], I am struggling to understand this response as to what I have learned to further support this sever misinterpretation of the service that has been performed on all occasions even after the BBB complaint and F report that was prematurely made which you promised to remove and hopefully is. I still believe your interpretation is clouded as you have yet to be on site and or even be present during our visits and really cannot accurately comment on the debacle that is nonexistent in reality. With this said, I appreciate that you finally respect John the supervisor’s skills as you did not during the long phone conversation trying to resolve this plumbing issue. The fact that the estimate is far less than the first is because it is a spot repair 1/3 of the worst area in the sewer line. This would be why it is a third of the cost. This is a spot repair of the area with the major belly in the line holding water that Kevin said would be fine and is acceptable to have. We no longer need to prove our hypothesis was correct. We now have the video to substantiate this on file showing clearly the belly holding water and backing up the drain. The entire sewer should be replaced in our opinion, but this will get you by and we as a company are not comfortable with doing anything 1/3 of the way because the danger is with customers that may not fully understand can be a problem when the rest of the old sewer fails. Nothing was nailed just an option to put a band aid on the situation. Your Mom was very kind and explained she was also flushing wipes and items that defiantly did not help the situation. Please confirm this with her if you have not already as I see no mention of this major NO NO. Where do we go from here? We have also spent many hours working on a resolution that I still believe we have done nothing wrong. The most recent day we returned by your request and pleads, we brought a major snaking machine and camera to open the drain on one of the busy days in your area due to heavy rains and still got there in hours at no cost as this should have been another $600 to snake the wipes out of the drain. You have received all the services and then some for what was paid for and I just don’t see any refund due as the equipment did what it was designed to do and it is the faulty sewer and the flushing of wipes and items not allowed causing the clog. Trust me, we have not made a penny here and we are losing even with the repair quoted trying to salvage this relationship. So you see the first estimate was good and should have been done, the job would have been complete with no extra invoices and a free flowing sewer. Nothing was bogus and the lack of trust in my company was the reason you sought a second opinion. My question is why did you call us when you had the second opinion and plumber you trusted in place? The answer is most of the time they are not quick responders and most call me back even when disappointed because they know we make it right. I believe you have been made right to this point after the return visit and verification of the problem we have known from the start. We never blew you off and always responded. We are all now aware we have been spot on from day one and no further training is needed as nothing has happened to you that happens every day. You confirmed yourself by phone, we have a stellar and great reputation. The last thing we want is you to be indifferent, so since we cannot credit a $600 adjustment I believe you should give the job to the person you trust and it is obvious it is not us. John and myself are always straight up and this is why NO – NONSENSE is our moto and will always be. John and I have plans to retire together when our time ends, so yes I am keeping him around. Anyone who knows us knows they can trust us. Since we are three weeks out it would not be fair to make your Mom wait for us. Since you feel the other plumber did right by you from day one, so yes, he deserves the business - so give it to him. I never like to lose any work but I feel this may be best because we have never earned your trust. I hope this is a satisfactory conclusion and will be my last correspondence on this matter. Thanks for the business and hopefully you will right the wrong on the BBB and any social media or public forum as that is the right thing to do as promised with your most recent call for service to us. Sal's is clearly not pleased with Angies scheduling system. They sent an email to me upon ordering saying so in pretty blunt detail. I immediately thought I made a bad decision. I had to make a few calls to get them the necessary information to perform my job which was slightly irritating but they were very pleasant. Scheduling was only a few days out which was a pleasant surprise. The plumber tried to upsell my wife on an upgraded nozzle and a few replacement valves in the basement. I didn't think they were necessary so we passed. He was nice enough according to her. Hard to judge a company on such a small job but I liked them.

I have used Sal's several times in the past, and did not hestitate to call them when a pesky kitchen sink clog surfaced (especially when there is an Angie's List coupon for drain cleaning). I placed a call to Sal's answering service early in the morning (1AM) regarding a clogged kitchen drain. Sal's returned my call shortly early in the morning (1:30AM) to confirm that they received my request and would be able to help. I knew this was a touch clog because I had used a plunger and snake on the clog myself for several hours the night before, but to no avail. Sal's called back again around 11AM to confirm that I still needed assistance, and to let me know that I was the next person up. Ant B. called me at about 12:30PM to let me know that he was en route and would be arriving about 1PM. Ant had the sink drain apart in a few minutes and had completed a first snaking within 15 minutes. The sink drain was reassembled, but the drain still remained (it was a tough clog). The sink was once again disassembled and a larger snake was brought in, which was used to snake all of the way to the main stack. SUCCESS!!! Overall, the appointment took about 1 hour, and Ant was very quick and professional. Ant even gave us some pointers for ways to prevent possible clogs in the future. I highly recommend Ant and also Sal's.

They were professional, helpful, explanatory, courteous and friendly. They did not call the usual 1/2 hour before they were to arrive, only gave us 5 minutes notice, which messed up our plans a little, but we adjusted. i had to call them to confirm that morning that I was still on their schedule. Gave us great "maintenance" tips as well. Will definitely look up Sal''s again for our heating and cooling needs.
Description of Work: Complete A/C unit check up, cleaning, install 1.5 lbs of refrigerant. Cleaned coil, unclogged coils. This was $59 prepaid; the refrigerant was only $69/lb, which was paid after the service was completed.

I am always impressed with Sal's whenever we have them perform work in my home. I called because our A/C was not working and our upstairs was 80+ degrees and our downstairs was a normal temperature. When I first called, I was told it was going to be 2-3 weeks until they could come and do the inspection. Since I had an infant, I pleaded with the nice lady on the phone and they were able to fit me in later that week. Since then, we've had them come out in the middle of the night when our furnace went out, and the work, again, was fantastic. Both times the service technicians were prompt and polite. Bonus points for them loving on our pets! When we replace our AC and furnace later this year, Sal's will be our first and only call.

From the very start they were very professional. They contacted me to let me know when they would be coming. They then contacted me to let me know they were on their way. We had a good experience with Sal's. They carefully examined everything and then explained exactly what they were going to do before starting the work. When repairing the pipe, they showed us why it was leaking and what the previous plumber had done incorrectly. With the toilet, they replaced the wax ring and reset it since it was crooked. Both of the repairs were successful - no more leaks! The service was also good. They wore shoe covers so as not to track too much dirt into the house. It was easy to reach them to set up an appointment. They called about 30 minutes before arriving, which is always helpful. The only thing that could be an issue for others is that you can't set a time of day for the appointment, not even a 4-hour window. You only know the day they are coming and that they will call when they are on their way. That worked fine for me because my house is close to where I work, but could be inconvenient for others. Overall, we were satisfied with the job they did and the cost of the repairs.
Description of Work: Used deal for $99 for two hours of service. Paid about $60 for materials for two repairs. First, to repair a pipe that had previously been repaired incorrectly by another plumber when the pipe froze the previous winter. Second, to fix water trickling from the base of a toilet.

Called before they came. Turns out a week later my motor is dead and could have been caught when they did the a/c check... i have another company coming out to fix what sals MISSED!!!! They showed me the unit once taken apart and showed me that it wasn't even clean!!! That is what i paid for!!! I am truly unhappy with the service i got from sals!!!!! I WILL NEVER USE THEM!

Member, I am sorry you motor failed a week after we were there. I am sure this is a pure bad luck. How could we be the cause of this? If you thought we were the cause you could of called us back as we honor all of our workmanship. As far as not cleaning the unit, I will investigate who was there and find out what was done. I am sure we did everything we normally do on our 20 point inspection. Pardon me but I am sure my competition would be upfront and honest about the job his biggest competition did, right? We have a target on our back as we are the leaders in the industry and any chance another company gets to take a shot they do. I will be in touch to attempt to make this right. Sal

Very well. One minor hitch because installer had to get part to attach to plastic pipe. Short delay but no big deal.

I contacted the company through Angie's List web site. I sent an email and the owner wrote me back. Sal said he would have someone call me the next morning. Nobody called me by 9:30AM, so I called the main office. I set up an appointment. I told the tenets at the house someone would be coming out. The tenets called me and said they checked to see when they where coming out and the Sal's told them no one was scheduled to come out. So I called again to set up an appointment. When they showed up, everything was great. They snaked the drain, ran the camera and told me what was wrong. They told me it needed to be jetted and they could come back the next day. They came back the next day and used the jet. Everything is working like new. I thought the cost was too high for the work that was done. I know everyone charges a lot to clean a main sewage drain.
