This work was an Angie's List special at $79 for annual HVAC inspection and maintenance. I was very satisfied with the technician that performed the heating work. He was punctual and very professional.
Description of Work: Annual inspection of heating system. There will be another inspection of the cooling system in the spring when the weather improves since this involves outdoor work.

Partially because I knew my furnace was 35 years old, and partially because Angie's List had a coupon, I had Sal's install an American Standard furnace in December of 2012. This winter, my heat went out, and I called Sal's, because I was surprised that something would be broken so soon after I had purchased a new furnace. TO MY HORROR, I FOUND THAT THE FURNACE SOLD TO ME IN 2012 (AS NEW) WAS ACTUALLY A 2007 FURNACE. The date is right on the back of the unit. I am extremely disappointed on a number of levels: First, there was no mention to me or in the paperwork that accompanied my "new" furnace that this unit was 5 years old. Next, I am disappointed in Angie's List for not doing their 'due diligence' in vetting this company. I would wonder if anyone who also bought a furnace from these people with a coupon in the last 2 years (at least) also received an old unit. THIS COMPANY PERPETRATED A FRAUD, and not just upon me, but possibly upon anyone else who purchased what they believed to be a new furnace from this company. I doubt that anyone at either Angie's List or at Sal's would be fine with paying for a 2015 model automobile and receiving a 2007 model. Neither am I. This seemed like a great price, and it was. However, I did not realize that the reason the price was so 'good' was because I was actually receiving a 5-year-old model. While their other ratings scored high, I would NOT recommend them because they essentially lied to me and sold me an old model. I would recommend that anyone who bought from them in the last few years should immediately check the year that is on the furnace with the date that they purchased the product, and that Angie's List consider dropping this company for their list of recommended providers.

Member! TO MY HORROR this review is written accusing my company of FRAUD before fully understanding or calling me personally or the company for an explanation. I have left a voice mails over 24/hours ago with no return call. You must be certain that what is in a review is an opinion and factual to keep the integrity of this service intact. The coupon had a model # on it and the furnace manufacture don't tell us when they are made. These were brand new furnaces in a box shipped directly to us never installed “BRAND NEW”. They were 93% furnaces instead of 95% needed for tax credits in 2012. Therefore, the good deal worthy of a “BIG DEAL” because everyone wanted the tax credits and those 95% furnaces were selling because that was required by our government to get the tax credit and the 93% fell short by 2% and the ONLY difference. You saved at least $1000 more than the rebate. I would not be disappointed at all. How much money have you saved with this furnace being 93% over your 35 year old 60% efficient one? I am quite sure the models and percentage was mentioned on coupon and contract. The year means nothing in the HVAC world as the warranty starts the day of install and is new from that day. Unlike a car being the year or miles and is a bad example. Not a good comparison. Nobody lied to you, Did you asked what year it was? I did not even know that before we installed the unit as we go by model #’s and still don’t know it for sure. You have a full warranty intact from day 1 of install. Angie's List would never drop me as a contractor for this reason and is stretch to even assume they would. We have been fully background checked over and over along with being state licensed and have worked very hard to continue to be their #1 contractor in this category. We are also one of their biggest revenue generating companies. Without strong highly skilled great companies like us they know deep down there is NO them but still must protect their Members. As a contractor Angie’s list has reminded me after the first response I do not have the ability to be as upfront in responding as I have grown accustom to with other reviewing websites so I have agreed to report in those parameters. 3/6/15 Since this report by the Member I have spoken to her personally and have had a respective conversation with her. I still feel this review is over the top with the word FRAUD as none has been committed. I personally pulled the contract and reviewed both the BIG DEAL coupon and the contract I wrote and all was in order and was clearly written the furnace she had us install professionally as she noted in her grades. Please Keep in mind that this BIG DEAL was so successful and the was the first time anyplace a furnace was offered on the BIG DEAL. We and American Standard shipped all the units they had in stock from everyplace in the USA unused and new in the box to us to sell on this big deal. These furnaces were made for many years before the new 95% furnaces came out to qualify for the tax credits and I extended the savings to the Angie’s Members. It is my hope this review will be updated by the customer to what we spoke about and this Member understands that personality can get lost with email as NO emotion is emphasized. I still thank the member for the business and hope she understands that she has the highest quality equipment in her home and has said she is fully satisfied with it and wants nothing more from Sal’s. With this being said we still offered a new furnace if she was not happy and disappointed but she said nope, I want nothing from you and I like my furnace just fine. I have done all I can do here and hope all the Members can see that. To all the Members, please call me if there is a problem before a review like this happens as we can normally work out the issues. This company will not rest until a customer is fully satisfied within reason. Sal

I've been very impressed with them. Typically one tech will come out and perform the service. The tech is usually at the home for ½ hr to an hour. Most recently, I had them out to fix a furnace in a rental unit; they came out quickly, identified the problem, and had it fixed within a few hours.

We found the humidifier installed was not enough and Sals installed another unit to make certain I was satisfied. Sal himself got invovled just to make certain I was satisfied. Very impressive!

I had no problem scheduling a date for installation by calling Sals, but the day after Angie's List gave a "special" of $600 for the same service. I did mention this to the woman on the phone, thinking they might give us the "special price", but that didn't happen.The two workers came out and removed our water heater, and were very nice, but the sweat joints aren't straight. The also did not give us a handle for the drain valve. They did not cover their shoes, so there were muddy footprints on our carpeting. When I called to schedule the installation appointment, I was informed that there was an additional $50 inspection fee to pull a county permit. Knowing the county fee was only $35, I asked why I was being charged more and was informed that was their "uniform" price for all counties. When the workers came, I again, complained about the upcharge for the permit fee and told them they would inform Sal. When they phoned with a follow up call, my husband told them about the missing handle and the lady said we'd have to buy that ourselves, but she'd talk to Sal. As of this writing neither concern has been addressed with us. Sal even send an "Angie's List Review Form" to us to give them a good report,postage paid. Now I know how they got a good rating. However, in an initial email about scheduling Sal's said, "I apologize for Angie's great idea that simply don't work or function as she advertises......", which I felt was an insult to Angie's List and it's members. I have since found that this WAS NOT a bargain price for a water heater. I won't be doing business with this company again.

Member I do apologize as you have a few concerns I will address here and have a member of my staff call to address the crooked water lines? In any case we are not allowed to give the Angie's List Big Deal Price unless you purchase it. I will not risk my agreement to honor this and lose much more than 1 customer. #2 The $55 permit fee is just that, if it is slightly more or less we must cover the handling and paperwork to get this done for you. If you like, with a water heater you could always go to the building department and spend the hour pulling the permit if you want to save the 20 bucks as I happen to think this is a bargain and I would be grateful if the customer just did it on their own. We would save time and money. Shoe covers are policy and this WILL NOT BE TOLERATED! I will address both and see who will be fired. I do appreciate the business and the feedback and a C is a fair grade but we will see what we can do to help you change your opinion about using us again. I have plenty of people that can help you as I would. In the event I am not there trust my staff as they understand my policies. Thanks you. Sal

It was fine. I've been using them for a long time. I'm very pleased with them. I had work done at my mother's house by them. They're very professional and very courteous. The work is done right the first time. My original choice for choosing them is one of the main people lives a couple of streets from me. If I have trouble in the middle of the night and I have to put in a service call, it shouldn't be too hard. I've been very satisfied with them for several years. As a matter of fact, I had them fix something that another plumber had worked at my mother's house. They didn't quite do the job right. Sal's came in, cleaned it up and fixed it properly without really complaining about it wasn't their responsibility. They are great.

This was another excellent experience with Sal's Heating & Cooling. I have used them several times. Every experience has been excellent. They are on time, friendly, professional, and competent. This time was to repair a leaky pipe under the bath tub. I called on Sunday. They completed the work on Monday. That is fast service. The repairman came in the morning, diagnosed the problem, and started the repair. I had to leave the house. The repairman returned later in the day to finish the job. That is excellent service--fast work and working around my schedule. The two repairmen were very friendly and worked well together. I am very pleased with the results. I recommend Sal's highly.

It turned out pretty good. There were no additional charges beyond the big deal amount. This was the first time I used them. The guy who came pretty much knew what had to be done. He pretty much did the job in a timely manner and was on his way. He took the Angie's List coupon and that's all he needed. There have been no problems. I can see that the thing is running. It hasn't malfunctioned or anything.

The service was great. They did a great job, and I am real happy with the humidifier we got in the house. Considering it is -15 degrees today, and humidity in the house is over 40%, that is real good, normally I get 20% which is dry. The gentleman who came out was very polite, he was very neat, he worked from start to finish, and did a great job. He took the time to explain everything and the manual, and cleaned up after. It was a great job. I had done comparison pricing, and it was a very good price.We called an made an appointment the same week.

They were enormously responsive and quite lovely. They came and did what they said they were going to do. When he pulled out the same filters in the furnace, he handed them to me and told me that I got to wash those. I thought that was interesting because it said that they would clean the filters. He cleaned the electronic filter. I took the two filters and put them under the water. They didn’t get clean and I had to ask him for a brush. He went and got me a brush. He didn't put them back because they were wet. It turned out that I needed a new furnace. The bearings were beginning to go and they were making a lot of noise. They put some sort of sound dampener to reduce noise, which was very nice. I think I would have gone with them to replace the furnace except for the fact that he was so casual about the filters which they were supposed to clean. So I wound up going with another company itself. I was so turned off by that. They recommended that I get a new furnace, but they didn’t have a brochure and they didn’t send me a brochure. I was less motivated to deal with them at that point. It was such a small thing, so I thought what was going to happen if it was a big thing. They were enormously responsive when I called and made the appointment. They were very good about calling back and all sort of stuff that we normally would be very annoyed about if it hadn’t happen. On everything except the issue of filters, they were just fine. They were very responsive. With regard to punctuality, as far as I'm aware they came when they said they were going to come. I really don’t recall. I didn’t have an issue with them over it. At some point, I'm going to need my humidifier on the furnace replaced and I might consider using them.

Went well except I asked him to bring a humidifier and he installed the wrong type although I told him to install a specific one. Otherwise I thought it went well although it was very noisey and they showed up on a Saturday. They dont give you a hard time at all if you call them to do anything extra.

They arrived on time and when quickly to work. They were professional and friendly and I was very comfortable having them in the house. There was a new socket cover in the bathroom with the faucets and they replaced it also which was a really nice thing to do.

They cleaned a drain. They couldn’t quite clean the drain completely – there was a lot of gunk and hair on the spiral part inside the drain – which I’m typically able to do myself.
Description of Work: I bought a deal for $99 for 2 hours of plumbing labor. He was actually at our home for a little under the time limit; we were trying to find additional things for him to do. He brought an assistant.

It pains me to write this review. I've been using Sal's for about 2 years now and they've done a great job until now. I had them install a whole-house humidifier around a year and a half ago. This year it stopped working. I called sal's for an appointment and I told them I thought the solenoid was bad, but I wanted them to make sure. They came and told me that the solenoid was indeed bad and they didn't have one and that it would be $102.60 for the visit, and additional charges when they come back out. I paid the first bill and called in to find out why it was so much for 5 minutes of work and 20 minutes of trying to find a solenoid. According to Jim (the manager) the charges had been either improperly explained to me or misunderstood by me. I told him that it seemed rather high to replace a part that I see sold for $50-$75, I said thank you but i'll just replace it on my own, to which he apologized for the confusion and told me he would talk to Sal about getting me a discount on further service. I then ordered a replacement solenoid, and when putting it in I found out that saddle valve that supplied water to the humidifier was not working. I was a little frustrated with this, as I had paid Sal's to come out and diagnose the problem, and now the solenoid may not really be the problem. I decided to call back to Sal's and let Jim know that when I was replacing the solenoid I found out there were other issues not initially diagnosed by the first service call, I wanted him know that things should have been checked more thoroughly. I then tried to replace the saddle valve on my own also, and it became obvious that I had over-committed my limited knowledge of HVAC, I called Sal's and talked to Jim again, apologized for trying to save some money and to see if he could send someone out to just fix it. He agreed and told me he would waive the trip fee to come back out due to previous issues (thank you!). Now the tech comes out, tells me that the saddle valve was busted and needed to be replaced and would be an additional charge, I agreed since it was probably me that broke it. He then told me that either I had ordered the wrong solenoid or the one I had was defective and I had also installed it backwards, which sadly didn't surprise me. He then told me since I had replaced the valve on my own, I had voided the valve warranty and I would have to purchase a new valve along with an additional service call charge, This was after he had called first to confirm the charges with the home office (jim). He then confirmed the original solenoid was bad. The new charge was $318.60. I called Jim to complain, since I had told him on multiple occasions I was replacing the solenoid on my own, and that there was never a mention about penalty service call charges or voiding warranty on a defective part. He asked me what I wanted, and I told him I was fine with all the charges except the $110 for a part that should have been covered under the warranty and the $50 "penalty" charge, and I would like the remainder of my warranty back, which seemed fair to me. A humidifier is not a complicated device and replacing a solenoid, no matter how badly, should not void anything. He then told me he would talk to Sal about it and call me back. 2 Weeks later he has yet to call me back. I feel like I was a victim of bait and switch, I had told Jim multiple times that I was going to replace the solenoid and he never told me that I would be voiding any warranty. And when I called back for the second service call, he said he would waive the initial service call fees, but not "oh, and by the way, since you replaced it on your own, the fees we're going to charge you again when we get on-site, along with a new part". This is after the tech confirmed THE SOLENOID WAS BAD. And worse of all, Jim's problem resolution strategy appears to be tell them whatever they want to hear, and then never do anything about it or return their phone calls.

The humidifier you claim is not difficult product but you probably should have let the #1 Aprilaire authorized and certified dealer just fix it the first time under warranty. When you do things yourself it creates problems when an item is under warranty. I have confirmed this with my rep and yes you voided your warranty with them and for sure with our company. Who can blame us? Do you work on a new car under warranty? Heck NO! You purchased the NON Aprilaire part on Amazon for crying out loud. The only penalty is a DIY penalty. We offered to refund $35 for the part you paid for if you give us the Aprilaire part back for exchange. Do it and lets be done with this NON SENSE! I can not pay for your mistakes and it saddens me you expect this of me. You have complained to the BBB and now Angie and this is nobody's fault but your own. We can help but every time we say NO and rightfully so, we get a review. I can not and will not continue to pay for a customers bad decisions. If we make a trip you need to pay for it and it is as simple as that. The offer stands, call us when you concede. Thanks for the 2 years of loyalty but common now.... Sal

Everything went fine. The cost was more than a normal install because I needed to be brought up to code.
Description of Work: Installed 40 gallon gas Lochinvar water tank. Installed a drain pan and ran 50 feet of 3/4 " PVC to sump pump. Installed pressure reducing valve and new expansion tank. Installed two 3/4" ball valves and mounted the hot water tank on bricks. I also needed a permit.

From the stand point of service tech.He was a nice,friendly and was competent.The concept of how the company bills for the service rendered.It was very out of line..They charged $307.00 For parts and labor and service call.The service call was absorbent their service technician lives two streets away from me. Travel time to my home to his is 5mins at best.The cost of that was $79.00.The remainder of the cost was for 15 mins of actual labor time.And the capacitor itself costs $1.20 .I know this because I went Morrow(A Tappen Nyrodene supplier) heating supply and purchased a spare.So I could have one on hand for future needs.Now the actually labor for replacing.this involves losening two screws that hold it in place.And to side off two spade leads off the clips.Then reversing that procedure.It took longer for the Tech to write the bill then the time spent on the repair.But when its 5 below zero and the furnace goes down on a Sunday.Its time to gouge.This was outrageous.I don't mind paying a fair price for a service.This is the reason I use this Angies List.But this is very much a perfect example of price gouging.There is no fairness to this price.This is why they have list like this.So now you are aware of the price structure in place by this provider..He probably doesn't pay his Technicians according to the level he charges for labor..If he indeed paid them $50. an hour for a wage.His profitability.Would the remainder of $307.00 minus $52.00 for the parts and hours labor charge.So Approximately $255.00 of gross profit for at most a 30 min call.Good Job Sals..I hope you continue to service your public in such a fair manner.

Thank God for a list like this for the owner of the company to provide a free business lesson that will probably not be understood by this Member judging by the business points made in this OUTRAGES review. To your first point friendly and competent, #1 those 2 qualities in a service technician are very difficult to find, normally they are fixers and rude of friendly and parts changers. We don't hire without both qualities. #2 Our pricing is right in line if not to inexpensive $79 to come to your home within 50 miles from our base and diagnosis the problem is a deal. Lucky for you he was 2 streets away and you did not need to wait for your heat. (I focus on the positive) #3 lets address your claim to gouging shall we? Considering the price has been the same for 8 years now 365 days a year this new business student has no clue what he is talking about as far as his claims, it is 5 below 0 and it is Sunday and accusations of price gouging is pure rubbish and reflects of the intelligence level of this review. Hey! by the way Morrow Control is closed on Sunday but we are not, good thing for you. Who out there would not expect to pay more on a Sunday? What you paid for is his certifications and my State certifications to be able to tell you, as you put it what was wrong in minutes not how simple it was to change out the bad capacitor by loosening 2 screws. Ahh, Sir, you spelled lessens wrong, sorry. What you paid for was knowledge, which at the time of service Member you did not have any of until you paid for your lesson in HVAC service. What a stupid comment. I am sorry but I hate the word stupid but it must be used here. First of all gross profit is almost no profit doing after hours calls. They cost more money then service during regular business hours. The reason the cost is so high is for many reasons but most of all labor. These techs make far more the $52 per hour by the time we pay them to and from and they double their salaries to pay Uncle Sam. The store came to you with one phone call and the store was stocked and ready to go. You did not leave your home to get a spare anything. Hey we have insurance on the van and also just in case we blow up your house. How is that for peace of mind? I don't hire rookies. If you want a dime store company hire somebody else. Your welcome, as with over 3000 reviews and 37 F grades and the F grades are just like this useless review, we serve the public well, top rated HVAC and Plumbing company on the list. Now I grade you on the review of how this business is structured FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF.
