About us

Jones Topsoil was incorporated in 1924 under the name Jones Fuel Co. 2015 is our 91st anniversary. We sold residential coal for home furnaces in the Columbus, Ohio area. As natural gas became the fuel of choice in the 1950’s we began hauling topsoil, sand and gravel, and limestone for contractors and homeowners. Although our corporate name is still Jones Fuel Co., we do not sell any fuel. Our topsoil has always been of the highest quality because we normally strip topsoil ahead of gravel operations. Our soil is called “sandy loam” topsoil and usually comes from along Franklin County Rivers and streams. We sell three types of topsoil. SoilPlus, which is a blended topsoil, and can be delivered with our Slinger Jones trucks, is normally used for flower beds and gardens. Pulverized topsoil is our rich topsoil run through a large grinder and made easy to work with and spread. That soil is used to level out lawns and fill areas that need built up with soil. Our regular, un-pulverized topsoil is used to fill deep holes, or when the customer is using a skid loader to spread the topsoil. We also sell and deliver high quality mulch, sand & gravel, and limestone products. Because we have so many trucks, we are normally able to deliver on the same day as the order is placed, and normally within a few hours. 40 Employees. Uses subs. Cost is determined by the job. Description of Work: They showed up with a truck too large to drive on my driveway even after I was ensured it would be delivered in a different truck. 33K lb slinger truck with 8 tons of gravel can not drive on a residential asphalt driveway without destroying it. The office personnel tried to convince me it wouldn't weigh any more than a single axle hilo truck. They then refused to honor their agreement with delivering it in a single axle truck.

I told [Member Info Removed] that a single axle truck could not haul 8 tons legally. He insisted that we do that. I told him that we could do 7 tons legally and would use a single axle truck to deliver that. I asked him if he was sure that he needed 8 tons, and he re-measured. It turned out that he really needed 9 tons. So I offered to bring that to him in two loads on a single axle truck, but he did not want to spend the extra money. The truck that we sent to him was actually a Slinger truck, not a dump truck, and I offered to sling the load and not go on the drive, but he did not want to do that. So I sent my driver on to another delivery. We have been in business for 91 years this year. That did not happen by being a "shady" business! I tried to accommodate him, but he would not accept the fact that we could not haul that much legally in a single axle dump truck. We did not charge him anything, and we did not provide any product or service to him.

Description of Work: Jones delivered 7 cubic yards of top-soil-plus, which is a mixture of high quality soil, compost, and sand. They delivered exactly when and where I wanted the soil, which is top quality stuff. It even smells rich in organic materials. They did not short me on soil either, if anything they topped me off generously. The driver was professional and competent. The sales staff was easy to deal with. Nothing but good things to say about this company.
