After Mr. Pickens spent a good amount of time on the phone with me telling me what I could do to fix my own problem I resolved to not use this service because he indicated that window leaks are hard to fix and he seemed reticent to take money from me to fix this window problem.
Description of Work: He gave advice over the phone on how to help me find the window leak but expressed a complete lack of confidence in being able to help me resolve this problem.

I'm late with this review, but appreciated Picken's service, and wanted to report on it, and I kept notes. A bird hit our window early one morning leaving marks on the outside glass, and the balance came out of place when I opened the double hung window to clean it. I couldn't get the window back in place to close it; it was dead weight. Our windows had been installed by Air-Tite in 2000, and until I tried to contact them for service on this window, I didn't realize they had gone out of business in spring 2012, which meant they were no longer there to honor the warranty on the windows. I then had to find someone else to fix the window. I Googled window repair in Cincinnati and found Pickens, which I then checked out on the BBB and Angie's List. I called, got voice mail, left a message, and Mr. Pickens called back about 30 minutes later. At first he asked if they could come out tomorrow afternoon, but I explained that the window was in the front of the house at ground level, and since we'd only been able to secure the opening with garbage bags and tape, I was concerned about a potential break-in, as well as the temperature in the house falling (as this was late November). He quoted me their rates and was able to send two repairmen to my house an hour later. One did most of the work, while the other helped him and explained what they were doing. A screw holding the balance, and therefore, the window, in place had broken. They replaced it with a heavier duty screw, sprayed the window mechanism with a silicone spray to help lubricate it, and recommended that I get a silicone spray to use on my other windows a couple of times a year. It only took them about 15 minutes to make the repair. The part was $14.35, the labor was $78.00, and the trip charge was $55.00, for a total of $147.35. They do sell parts at their store, so if you are handy, which we're not, it would be cheaper for you to repair your window(s) yourself. We really appreciated Pickens helping us out by coming that morning to get the window repaired, so we were protected against possible intruders and the cold (the temperature in the room had dropped to 58.3 in the couple of hours the window couldn't be closed), and we would use them again, but do wish they were less expensive.
Description of Work: Replaced a broken screw that held the balance in place, so the window could be closed again.

From the moment of the first call to Pickens, I was very impressed. The woman that answered the phone was extremely friendly and knowledgeable about what the possible problem was. She put my mind at ease that this was an easy solution as I was previously worried about having the cost of replacing many windows. The technician arrived on time and completed the entire job in one hour. All windows, some of which are upwards of 30 years old, are now working properly. He also was very friendly and respectful of my house.
Description of Work: Made repairs to 15 windows, in my 91 year old house, that had various problems including bottom and or top window not staying open and windows that would not lock.

The first visit from a worker went well. He was very helpful in explaining things to me and telling me exactly what would happen as he worked up the estimate. When two workers came to install the new glass, they were very professional and were very willing to answer any of my questions and were helpful in providing extra information. I also needed a very large screen replaced in my patio door, and they took care of that also. Overall, i found the service, the product, and the price very good.
Description of Work: My 30-year-old windows in my condo were "foggy" because the seal between the double panes was broken. They replaced only the glass--I did not have to get all new windows, which I did not want to have to do. So I was very happy that they provided the service of replacing the glass only.

This guy was great! We just moved into the house and had an issue with one window. He came out and looked at the window and recommended we might want to wait and live in the house for a season to see how the other windows reacted, because it would be to our benefit to do more than one repair at a time if we had other issues. I appreciated his honesty and he took the time to show me where to look to see the date of the windows and how to open them to clean them!

We had 6 panes of glass replaced in floor to ceiling casement windows. The glass was replaced due to broken seals. They also replaced some damaged weatherstripping and a broken latch. The quality of work was good, i would have liked to see some more of the weatherstripping replaced, but overall we were happy. Glass replacement vs. new windows saved us ~$3500.

The windows of the house are deteriorating: two were foggy, one had a crack on it. Some others were difficult to open due to problems with the balances, or other parts. I called Pickens to set up a date. Tom was sent over to look through the windows. In a week, an estimate was sent to me, which I accepted immediately. After depositing $500, custom windows were ordered. They came back to install the three windows and fixed opening problems with other windows. It was a very smooth experience.

Description of Work: We have an 80 year old house with double hung windows. the lower sash has counter-weights attached with ropes that loop over a pully into the wall. I called Pickens and they were responsive in setting an appointment . Tom arrived on time and was very knowledgeable and patient. He answered all my questions and was careful to ensure the measurements were exactly correct for the replacement window glass. It took longer to get the estimate then I expected, so I called to follow up and once I did this I quickly received the estimate. The installation of the glass and jam liners went smoothly. Tom was very professional and paid attention to detail.

They allowed for a huge pile of glass to be delivered to their site—where they actually did the work. So, we didn’t have to have all of that here at our home. We did transport the windows there, but we were really happy with the work that they did.

A couple of years ago, we noticed that a number of our windows looked "foggy" due to the seal breaking in our double-paned windows. Several people told me that putting money into new windows - if you don't plan on staying in the house "forever" - was not a good investment, so we decided to have the glass replaced. We asked Pickens for an estimate (free) in the fall of 2011, which was done promptly. However, the price was higher than we expected, so we delayed having the job done until spring of 2012. When we called back in April, we scheduled an appointment (it was about three to four weeks out) and they came out with all the glass as promised at the beginning of May. The two men arrived on time, were courteous and very professional. The job took longer than expected however (some of the glass was hard to remove), so we had to schedule an additional day for the last 2 windows. Although this took another 3 weeks or so, it worked out well for us, since we noticed another window that needed new glass and this gave them time to order it. The second time they came out (same two men), we received the same professional service. Although I thought the job was a bit pricey, I have no other estimate to compare them to, so I can't say if this was truly high or not. I do know that I was satisfied with the finished project and would hire them again and recommend them to others.
Description of Work: Pickens Window Service replaced the glass (double-paned) in 17 of the windows (various sizes) in our 20 year old house.

When I first called, I spoke to the owner, Brian, and set up an appointment for an estimate that worked for my schedule - no trading calls, no lost messages or following up - which was immediately impressive. Jay was right on time for the estimate, very polite and professional. He took the time to listen to the problems I had and made suggestions as we went through the house. He was respectful of our budget and patient answering my questions. I decided on reglazing 6 of the double-hung windows, 1 picture window & 3 fixed windows, replacing a couple cracked panes and a broken garage window, and sealing the 2 leaking third-floor windows for an estimate of $700, using a two-man crew for half a day. I had to wait a couple of weeks for the work to be done, but felt it was well worth the wait to have Jay handle the job. I wasn't going to be at home, but had someone coming to the house to meet the guys for the mid-day appointment.Jay told me they would call from the office around 8:30 on the morning of the appointment and made sure he had the right phone number to reach me, since I wouldn't be at home. I got their call that morning, confirming the appointment time and arrangements, and the phone number they were to call when they were on the way. As promised, they called my mom when they finished their morning appointment, which minimized the amount of time she had to sit at my house waiting for them to arrive. I left a note confirming the items to be done, and asked Jay to take a look at one of the storm windows that was particularly loose in the frame.Midway through the afternoon, Jay called about the storm windows. The outer frames were coming apart in the corners and several were way out of square. On all the storm windows (28 panes in total), the plastic channel that holds the glass in the inside frames had dried out & shrunk, and in some cases, the glass was barely held into the frame. No wonder they were so drafty and hard to raise and lower. We talked about the cost to replace the storm windows, or maybe take the panes out and rework them individually. At that point, I was ready to call it quits and have Jay take them to the shop a few at a time to reset the glass - all 28 of them. But he said he wanted to check something out & he'd call me right back. When he called back, he said they could run a bead of silicone around each pane alongside the channel, sealing the glass into the frame, instead of replacing the channel. This approach could be done on site for less than half the cost of reworking the panes, and a fraction of the cost of replacing the storm windows. Along with squaring up the outside frames, this added $400 to the cost, and took a second appointment to complete the work. Pickens did a wonderful job on our windows. Everything was done as expected, the clean-up was immaculate, and my eighty-plus year old mother couldn't stop talking about how nice Jay and Larry were, and how efficiently they worked. The windows are far less drafty, the storm windows operate smoothly & fit well in their frames now. The work quality was exceptional, the price was fair, and everyone was very professional to work with. They educated me about options to solve my problems and respected our budget. Brian goes out of his way to avoid the misunderstandings that characterize so many of our previous experiences having work done on our home. I definately would use them again, and recommend them without hesitation.
Description of Work: The first and second floors of our 100 year-old home have original double-hung windows, complete with ropes and weights, and triple-track storm windows - the ones with 2 sliding panes of glass & a screen. Although most of the windows have been refinished & restored in the 30 years we've lived here, several were still drafty, hard to raise & lower, with cracks in a couple panes and several that had the glazing cracking and falling out. Three of the storm windows wouldn't slide in the tracks, or came out of the track when the pane was opened. I called Brian Pickens to get an estimate on reglazing some of the windows, replacing a broken garage window and sealing 2 leaking quarter-circle windows on our third floor.

Our double-hung Andersen windows are approximately 25 years old and some have started to lose their seal, allowing moisture to accumulate inside the panes. This results in a very unsightly cloudy-looking pane of glass that you can barely see out of. Rather than replace the whole window, frame and all -- a VERY expensive option - we had Pickens replace the glass. Not only were they at all times punctual and professional but friendly and informative as well. Plus the results are fantastic - we're thrilled with how beautiful the windows look, not to mention the fact that our total cost for doing 3 windows was about 1/4 of what it would have cost to replace the whole window. With all the windows we have in this home we're fairly certain more of them will lose their seal as the years go by and we definitely plan to use Pickens again to replace them. We highly recommend these folks!

We had a lot of problems with them. They came out promptly. They told us they would have to order some parts in two weeks. A month went by and I called them back, they gave us some excuse. They said they would call back. This went for 3 or 4 times and every time they said they would call back, but they never did. I didn't know what the problem was. However, nevertheless, we were very dissatisfied with their service. They did come back later and I don't think they wanted to do it. They doubled the price. It was a highball price. By that time, we figured out that they didn’t want to do it. The people who came out to give the bid were very good. Other than that, they did some work for us few years ago and that was fine. Apparently, other people hadn't had any problem with them; but with this particular case, I don't know what the problem was. First time, they came out they were punctual.
Description of Work: Pickens Windows Service gave us an estimate to put in new windows in August. They had to mould two windows together and we had 4 windows. They had to replace single and double hung window panel.

Response from Pickens Windows Service
In response to the member comments. Pickens' Window Service was called in to repair several of the member's windows. A tech was sent out on the appointed date and pulled samples of parts that were needed. Parts that we did not have . The members were informed that we would need to try and order parts. On August 15th, 2011 we sent out the sample part to a supplier in order to locate them. The sample went from us to our supplier. At the time of the member's report, the parts have still not been located, but we have now told our supplier to stop the search, since the member has decided to replace or has replaced the windows. In our industry you do not just buy parts off of the shelf. Locating parts often takes a great deal of time and this is what happened in this case. The whole process did take longer than normal, bur unfortunately that is the nature of the beast. As far as the member not having his calls returned, I do not have a honest answer. I cannot agree or disagree. But I was not informed that calls were not being returned. If there is an area that we do need improvement in, it is in communication. That issue has been addressed with my entire staff and is an ongoing area of concern. . As far as what the member is talking about " two windows being moulded together, and had to replace single hung and double hung window panels", I have no idea what we means. I believe that he is referring to replacing the windows and that is something that we do not do. It sounds like the member is confusing Pickens' Window Service with the company that replaced his windows. In conclusion, my company, staff and myself are far from perfect,we are very human, but we very much want to assist people with their window problems. Brian R. Pickens, owner

I found them on Angies List. I had used them before and I had an issue so I had to find someone less on the internet because the part that I had to locate was no longer manufactured. I had to go to a online parts store in New Jersey to get that part. I would like them to be more timely in their e-mail responses. They were wonderful every time (used them 3 times)--they repaired windows and do not try to upsell you into new windows. The have 100,000's parts for windows and can fix anthing that is broken. I was impressed with the fact that they fould fix them every time and carefully pointed our if a window needed to be repaired or simply adjusted. I will use them every time for any window work I have to get done. They were reasonable, curtious and always on time. Great company.
